Abstract:The properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials have been extensively studied and applied in various applications. Our interest is to theoretically investigate the thermal transport and thermoelectric properties of the 2D transition metal dichalcogenides Mo$X_2$ ($X$ = S, Se, Te). We employ density functional theory and Boltzmann transport theory with relaxation-time approximation to calculate the electronic and transport properties. We also implemented the kinetic-collective model to improve the calculation of lattice thermal conductivity. Our calculations indicate that MoTe$_2$ has the highest ZT of 2.77 among the other Mo$X_2$ at 550 K due to its low thermal conductivity and high electrical conductivity. Consequently, we suggest that Mo$X_2$ monolayers hold promise as materials for energy conversion devices due to their relatively high ZT. Moreover, these results could be beneficial to design 2D material based high performance thermoelectric devices.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to study the heat transfer and thermoelectric properties of transition metal dichalcogenides (MoX₂, where X = S, Se, Te) through first - principles calculations. Specifically, the paper focuses on the following points: 1. **Electronic structure and band characteristics**: By calculating the electronic structure of monolayer MoX₂ materials, determine their band gaps and band structures, especially considering the influence of spin - orbit coupling (SOC). This helps to understand the electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of these materials, and then evaluate their potential as thermoelectric materials. 2. **Phonon properties and lattice thermal conductivity**: Use the density functional theory (DFT) and Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) combined with the relaxation time approximation (RTA) method to calculate the phonon dispersion relation and lattice thermal conductivity of monolayer MoX₂. In particular, the kinetic collective model (KCM) is introduced to improve the calculation of lattice thermal conductivity, making it more consistent with experimental results. 3. **Thermoelectric performance evaluation**: Based on the above calculation results, evaluate the thermoelectric performance of monolayer MoX₂, mainly focusing on its thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT). ZT is defined by the following formula: \[ ZT=\frac{S^{2}\sigma}{\kappa_{e}+\kappa_{ph}}T \] where \(S\) is the Seebeck coefficient, \(\sigma\) is the electrical conductivity, \(\kappa_{e}\) is the electronic thermal conductivity, \(\kappa_{ph}\) is the lattice thermal conductivity, and \(T\) is the working temperature. 4. **Temperature - dependence study**: Explore the changes in the thermoelectric performance of monolayer MoX₂ at different temperatures, especially the trend of ZT at high temperatures. Through these studies, the paper finds that monolayer MoTe₂ has the highest ZT value (2.77), which is mainly attributed to its low lattice thermal conductivity and high electrical conductivity. This result indicates that monolayer MoX₂ materials have great application potential in energy conversion devices, especially in wearable devices.
