Abstract:A new approach for elucidating reaction mechanism of complex reactions, such as Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis, is presented. It includes a combination of integrated transient and steady-state kinetic modeling, experimental and DFT investigations of kinetic isotopic effects. The integrated transient and steady-state modeling enable the determination of H2 and CO equilibrium constants and detailed mapping of surface species including surface concentrations and their reactivities. The predictive ability of Langmuir-Hinshelwood type kinetic models has been significantly improved by taking into account the effect of interaction between adsorbed CO on the CO adsorption. Together with DFT investigations of the kinetic isotopic effect, the dominating CO activation pathway through hydrogen-assisted CO dissociation has been confirmed. It led also to a clarification of two carbon pools namely CH2O* (Cα) and CHx * (Cβ) and two corresponding reaction pathways for methane formation. The prevailing reaction pathway for methane formation depends on the operating conditions. Hydrogen surface concentration is the key parameter determining the reactivity of adsorbed CO and the reaction pathways for methane formation. © 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Probing the product selectivity of Fischer-Tropsch catalysts is of prime scientific and industrial importance-with the aim to upgrade products and meet various end-use applications. In this work, the mechanisms for CH4 formation and C-1-C-1 coupling on a thermodynamically stable, terraced-like chi-Fe5C(2) (510) surface were studied by DFT calculations. It was found that this surface exhibits high effective barriers of CH4 formation for the three cases (i.e., 3.66, 2.81, and 2.39 eV), indicating the unfavorable occurrence of CH4 formation under FTS conditions. The C + CH and CH + CH are the most likely coupling pathways, which follow the carbide mechanism. Subsequently, the effective barrier difference between CH4 formation and C1-C1 coupling was used as a descriptor to quantify FTS selectivity. A comparison of the selectivity between this surface and the reported FTS catalysts surfaces was discussed in detail. More interestingly, this surface shows unexpectedly high C2+ selectivity. This indicates that manipulating the crystal facet of chi-Fe5C2 catalyst can effectively tune the FTS selectivity, which will open a new avenue for highly selective Fe-based FTS catalysts.
Quantitative Determination of C–C Coupling Mechanisms and Detailed Analyses on the Activity and Selectivity for Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis on Co(0001): Microkinetic Modeling with Coverage Effects

Abstract:The Fischer–Tropsch synthesis plays a significant role in re-forming natural resources to meet global demand for commodities, while there is ongoing oil depletion and population growth. Mechanisms have long been investigated, but they are still a heavily debated issue. In this work, all of the possible elementary reaction steps on a flat cobalt surface were calculated using density functional theory (DFT) with van der Waals interactions. Kinetic simulations using standard DFT data (free energies and barriers at low coverages), the so-called non-coverage-dependent kinetic model commonly used in the literature, are compared to those from a coverage-dependent kinetic model for the system. We show that the coverage-dependent kinetic model gives rise to a TOF which is approximately 6 orders of magnitude larger than the TOF calculated using the non-coverage-dependent kinetic model. Furthermore, it is found that Co(0001) is highly selective to olefin production, and it is very likely to produce long-chain hydrocarbons. Both models demonstrate that the CO insertion mechanism is the dominant mechanism on Co(0001). Our calculations also reveal that high coverage of CHx leads to the carbide mechanism being significant and low coverage of CHx results in the CO insertion mechanism being more favored. Direct CO dissociation is difficult on Co(0001), which leads to monomers CHx being unable to occupy a certain amount of surface coverage, causing the carbide mechanism to be inhibited. The reaction pathway through CO + H → CHO, CHO + H → CHOH, and CHOH → CH + OH is the main channel to form the monomer CH on the basis of the coverage-dependent kinetic model simulations. The temperature considerably affects the surface coverage and the total reaction rate, leading to the selectivity being highly temperature dependent. Our coverage-dependent kinetic model predicts that the selectivity of oxygenates is high in comparison to methane in the low-temperature region from 425 and 475 K. From 475 to 525 K, the selectivity toward CH4 increases. From 525 to 700 K, the selectivity of C2 decreases significantly and the selectivity of CH4 increases remarkably.

Abstract:Fischer–Tropsch synthesis over CoMn oxides is a surface-catalyzed structure-sensitive reaction. Active site changes greatly alter product distribution. The dynamics and essence of the changes in Co species during the reaction have seldom been explored. Herein, multiple characterizations were applied to confirm that two types of active sites, i.e., Co and Co2C, coexist on CoMnO x under the reaction conditions. Apart from the direct participation of carbon species in the reaction, the steady-state isotopic transient kinetic analysis also suggested the mutual transformation of carbon species in Co2C. The ratio of the two paths altered with the temperature, thus leading to Co2C-rich and Co-rich surfaces at intermediate and high temperatures, respectively. Kinetic calculations and microkinetic modeling showed that Co2C-rich surfaces facilitated CO adsorption and suppressed hydrogen adsorption. This gave high carbon-chain growth activity. The Co-rich surfaces showed high vacancy and hydrogen coverages, lowering the CO activation and CH4 formation energies.

Abstract:Spin-polarized density functional theory calculations have been performed to investigate the mechanism of CH4 formation on a η-Fe2C Fischer-Tropsch catalyst. Facets exposed and their ratio of the catalyst can be obtained by Wulff construction based on the surface energies of 13 facets observed by XRD patterns. The (011) and (110) surfaces are predicted as the dominant exposed facets. Their CH4 formation pathways by surface C hydrogenation were comparatively studied. The results show that the surface C hydrogenation highly depends on the local environment of surface carbon and electronic property of iron atoms, and the (011) surface is more active towards CH4 formation. A comparison of CH4 formation between η-Fe2C and other Fischer-Tropsch catalysts was carried out. Finally, the nature of iron FischerTropsch catalyst active phases and sites was proposed.

Abstract:Fe2C is the main active phase of low temperature Fe-based Fischer-Tropsch catalysts. It is of great significance to study the mechanism of Fischer-Tropsch reaction. Herein, spin-polarized density functional theory (DFT) calculations are performed to investigate the mechanism of CH4 formation and C—C coupling on the η-Fe2C (011) surface, where this crystal phase is thermodynamically stable. The calculated results show that the effective barrier of CH4 formation on such surface is 1.03 eV, lower than those of C—C coupling, and the C+CH3 is the most likely C—C coupling pathways. Subsequently, the effective barrier difference between the CH4 formation and C1—C1 coupling is used as a descriptor to compare the difference of the Ficher-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) selectivity between the η-Fe2C(011) surface and other Fe-based catalysts surfaces. The FTS selectivity is found to be highly sensitive to the crystal phases and surfaces of Fe-based catalysts, and the η-Fe2C(011) surface shows relatively high CH4 selectivity.

Abstract:Impacts of H-2/CO ratios on both the bulky and surface compositions of an iron-manganese based catalyst were investigated by XRD, MES, N-2-physisorption, XPS and LRS. Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis performances were studied in a slurry-phase continuously stirred tank reactor. The characterization results showed that the fresh catalyst was comprised of the hematite, which was converted firstly to Fe3O4, and then carburized to iron carbides in both the bulk and surface regions under different H-2/CO ratios atmosphere. Pretreatment in lower H-2/CO ratio facilitated the formation of iron carbides on the surface of magnetite and surface carbonaceous species. During the F-T synthesis reaction, the catalyst reduced in lower H-2/CO ratio presented higher catalytic activity, which is assigned probably to the formation of more iron carbides (especially for chi-Fe5C2) on the surface of magnetite. Abstract:Structure–performance relationship is a complex issue in iron-catalyzed Fischer–Tropsch synthesis, and it is not easy to elucidate it by experimental investigations. First-principle calculation is a powerful method for explaining experimental results and guiding catalyst design. In this study, we investigated the reaction mechanisms of CH4 formation and C–C coupling on four χ-Fe5C2 surfaces and established the kinetic equations to compare the rates of CH4 formation and C1+C1 coupling reactions and determine the CH4/C2+ selectivity. The results show that the geometry of the χ-Fe5C2 surfaces has little effect on the formation rate of CH4; however, the C1+C1 coupling reactions are significantly affected by the surface geometry. The C1+C1 coupling reaction rates on the terraced-like (510) and (021) surfaces are much higher than those on the stepped-like (001) and (100) surfaces. Based on these results, we established a Brønsted–Evans–Polanyi (BEP) relationship between the effective barrier difference for CH4 formation and C1+C1 coupling (ΔEeff) and the adsorption energy of C+4H (ΔEC+4H) on χ-Fe5C2 surfaces. ΔEC+4H can be used as a descriptor for CH4/C2+ selectivity on different surfaces of χ-Fe5C2.

Abstract:Fischer‐Tropsch synthesis (FTS) is an attractive opportunity to prepare fuels and chemicals, avoiding fossil resources exploration. Co 2 C was recently demonstrated to exhibit outstanding properties in Fischer‐Tropsch to olefins (FTO) reaction, inhibiting methane formation. However, the exact mechanisms have not been entirely revealed yet. Here we are proposing a study combining DFT calculations and microkinetic modelling (MKM) in order to unveil the dominant reaction pathways of three products of interest in FTS, namely methane, ethylene and methanol, over (020), (101) and (111) facets of Co 2 C. We found methane and ethylene share the same determining states, being responsible for the competition between the two species. Since our MKM gives results suggesting the surface is fully covered with CO at the steady‐state, we expect that including adsorbate‐adsorbate interactions both in DFT calculations and MKM simulations would be important in the future studies of FTS over Co 2 C surfaces.

Abstract:We systematically investigated the mechanism of the C1 + C1 coupling reactions using density functional theory. The activation energies of C1+C1 coupling and carbon hydrogenation reactions on both flat and stepped surfaces were calculated and analyzed. Moreover, the coverages of adsorbed C1 species were estimated, and the reaction rates of all possible C1 + C1 coupling pathways were quantitatively evaluated. The results suggest that the reactions of CH2 + CH2 and CH3 + C at steps are most likely to be the key C1 + C1 coupling steps in FT synthesis on Co catalysts. The reactions of C2 + C1 and C3 + C1 coupling also were studied; the results demonstrate that in addition to the pathways of RCH+CH2 and RCH2+C, the coupling of RC+C and RC+CH also may contribute to the chain growth after C1.

Abstract:Unresolved mechanistic details of monomer formation in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) and of its oxygen rejection routes are addressed here by combining kinetic and theoretical analyses of elementary steps on representative Fe and Co surfaces saturated with chemisorbed CO. These studies provide experimental and theoretical evidence for hydrogen-assisted CO activation as the predominant kinetically-relevant step on Fe and Co catalysts at conditions typical of FTS practice. H2 and CO kinetic effects on FTS rates and oxygen rejection selectivity (as H2O or CO2) and density functional theory estimates of activation barriers and binding energies are consistent with H-assisted CO dissociation, but not with the previously accepted kinetic relevance of direct CO dissociation and chemisorbed carbon hydrogenation elementary steps. H-assisted CO dissociation removes O-atoms as H2O, while direct dissociation forms chemisorbed oxygen atoms that desorb as CO2. Direct CO dissociation routes are minor contributors to monomer formation on Fe and may become favored at high temperatures on alkali-promoted catalysts, but not on Co catalysts, which remove oxygen predominantly as H2O because of the preponderance of H-assisted CO dissociation routes. The merging of experiment and theory led to the clarification of persistent mechanistic issues previously unresolved by separate experimental and theoretical inquiries.

Abstract:Cobalt carbides have been recognized as an active phase for the production of light olefins and alcohols in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis. In this study, in situ X-ray diffraction experiments were performed to investigate the stability and catalytic performance over a single-phase Co3C catalyst under reaction conditions. The in situ X-ray diffraction results indicated that the Co3C phase remained stable with no significant changes until the temperature reached 300 °C. The high stability can be attributed to the twinning structure of the single-phase Co3C catalyst. The catalytic evaluation results showed that the single-phase Co3C catalyst had higher activity with high selectivity to long-chain products due to the unique surface structure of Co3C. This work provides guidance for the rational design of efficient cobalt carbide catalysts for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis reactions.

Abstract:The combination of density functional theory (DFT) calculations and kinetic analyses is a very useful approach to study surface reactions in heterogeneous catalysis. The present paper reviews some recent work applying this approach to Fischer–Tropsch (FT) synthesis. Emphasis is placed on the following fundamental issues in FT synthesis: (i) reactive sites for both hydrogenation and C–C coupling reactions; (ii) reaction mechanisms including carbene mechanism, CO-insertion mechanism and hydroxyl-carbene mechanism; (iii) selectivity with a focus on CH4 selectivity, α-olefin selectivity and chain growth probability; and (iv) activity.

Abstract:Converting CO2 into value-added chemicals and fuels is one of the promising approaches to alleviate CO2 emissions, reduce the dependence on nonrenewable energy resources, and minimize the negative environmental effect of fossil fuels. This work used density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with microkinetic modeling to provide fundamental insight into the mechanisms of CO2 hydrogenation to hydrocarbons over the iron carbide catalyst, with a focus on understanding the energetically favorable pathways and kinetic controlling factors for selective hydrocarbon production. The crystal orbital Hamiltonian population analysis demonstrated that the transition states associated with O-H bond formation steps within the path are less stable than those of C-H bond formation, accounting for the observed higher barriers in O-H bond formation from DFT. Energetically favorable pathways for CO2 hydrogenation to CH4 and C2H4 products were identified which go through an HCOO intermediate, while the CH* species was found to be the key C1 intermediate over χ-Fe5C2(510). The microkinetic modeling results showed that the relative selectivity to CH4 is higher than C2H4 in CO2 hydrogenation, but the trend is opposite under CO hydrogenation conditions. The major impact on C2 hydrocarbon production is attributed to the high surface coverage of O* from CO2 conversion, which occupies crucial active sites and impedes C-C couplings to C2 species over χ-Fe5C2(510). The coexistence of iron oxide and carbide phases was proposed and the interfacial sites created between the two phases impact CO2 surface chemistry. Adding potassium into the Fe5C2 catalyst accelerates O* removal from the carbide surface, enhances the stability of the iron carbide catalyst, thus, promotes C-C couplings to hydrocarbons.

Abstract:With an increase in energy consumption globally, Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis is a good alternative for producing fuels and chemicals from coal, natural gas or biomass. Among them, coal to liquids has been put into production in countries that have large coal reserves. In this process, Fe-based catalysts are commonly used due to their earth abundance, comparatively wide operation range and ready availability to handle low H2/CO ratio from coal. Despite their extensive applications, the kinetic and mechanistic understandings of Fe carburization and FT reaction on Fe-carbides are relatively limited due to the complexity of the phase composition of the applied catalysts. This review summarizes the current state of knowledge of FT synthesis on Fe-carbide with an emphasis on the underlying mechanism. Specifically, the employment of a model catalyst, such as Raney Fe, could provide a convenient way to furnish kinetic information regarding Fe carburization and subsequent FT reaction. A major challenge for further understanding catalytic reactions occurring at the Fe-carbide surface is correlating FT activity and selectivity to a specific active site. To address this issue, the advancements of both DFT calculations and surface science techniques are highly demanded.

Abstract:Abstract Facile C-C bond formation is essential to the formation of long hydrocarbon chains in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. Various chain growth mechanisms have been proposed previously, but spectroscopic identification of surface intermediates involved in C-C bond formation is scarce. We here show that the high CO coverage typical of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis affects the reaction pathways of C 2 H x adsorbates on a Co(0001) model catalyst and promote C-C bond formation. In-situ high resolution x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows that a high CO coverage promotes transformation of C 2 H x adsorbates into the ethylidyne form, which subsequently dimerizes to 2-butyne. The observed reaction sequence provides a mechanistic explanation for CO-induced ethylene dimerization on supported cobalt catalysts. For Fischer-Tropsch synthesis we propose that C-C bond formation on the close-packed terraces of a cobalt nanoparticle occurs via methylidyne (CH) insertion into long chain alkylidyne intermediates, the latter being stabilized by the high surface coverage under reaction conditions.
