Abstract:An analytical model of quasi-continuous wave (quasi-CW) diode array side-pumped slab laser for Yb:YAG oscillator in long-pulse free-running has been developed based on the CW model. In this model we first introduce a new parameter, pump pulse width and make the model available for use in the quasi-CW model. We also give an analytical equation of laser delay time to calculate the laser pulse width. A detailed model is also presented for a new structure laser design, taking account of the geometry of Yb:YAG slab. A quasi-CW diode array side-pumped Yb:YAG slab laser is investigated theoretically and experimentally. Experiments yield a quasi-CW output energy up to 20.36 mJ with the laser pulse width of 654.55 μs at 1049 nm when the diode arrays operate at 25 Hz and 1 ms pulse width. The crystal dimensions are 3 mm×8 mm×1 mm and the doping density is 10 at.%. The experimental results are in good agreement with the predictions of the theoretical model.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a quasi-cw InGaAs microlens-free diode arrays side-pumped Yb:YAG slab laser which operates at 25Hz. The pump light is transmitted by a lensduct which transmission efficiency is measured about 80%. The laser cavity is plane-concave. We have achieved 16mJ output energy using 8mm X 3mm X 1mm dimension and 5at.% Yb doped crystal with 345mJ input energy of diode arrays which operate in 1ms pulse mode. For another 8mm X 3mm X 2mm(5at.%) crystal, 8.7mJ output energy is obtained; the beam quality factor M-2 values are measured to be 5.83 and 7.66 in the vertical and horizontal directions respectively. The water temperature for cooling diode arrays and crystal are 11.8degrees C and 5degrees C separately.

Abstract:A quasi-continuous-wave diode array side-pumped Q-switched Yb:YAG slab laser has been demonstrated. A KD*P crystal is used as an electro-optic Q-switch and 3.07-mJ output energy with a pulse width as short as 56.27 ns (FWHM) is obtained. The Yb:YAG crystal doped density is 10 at.% with the dimension 8 X 3 X 1 mm. The pulse width and energy fluctuations are 3.44% and 3.36% respectively. The relative Q-switched theory is analyzed and rate equations are calculated. The influence of Q-switch delay time on pulse performance is also studied. Abstract:A high power and high efficiency laser head with five dual-line diode arrays for the side-pumped Nd:YAG rod is developed. By mounting two laser heads of this kind and a quartz 90 degrees rotator into a thermally-near-unstable symmetrical fiat-flat resonator, a continuous-wave power output of 1157W at 1064mn is obtained with a beam quality factor M-2 of similar to 39. To the authors' knowledge, this is the highest power output at 1064 nm for the diode-side-pumped two-rod Nd:YAG laser.

Abstract:A high efficiency Nd:YAG laser pumped by a LD arrays was reported. The dependence of the output power on duty cycle and pulse width was investigated. The output power of 1.9w and optical-optical conversion efficiency of 40.4% were obtained at the input power of 4.7w. Lens duct was used to deliver the pumping power to Nd:YAG rod. Without antireflection coated for 808nm on two end faces of lens duct, the transfer efficiency of lens ducts is 84%.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high power high beam quality diode-pumped 1 112-nm Nd:YAG master-oscillator power-amplifier (MOPA) laser system. To increase the extraction efficiency and output power, a four-pass amplifier scheme is employed. Finally, the injected laser output power is amplified from 26 to 64 W with beam quality factor M-2=2.85. Furthermore, a theoretical model that takes the temporal overlap inversion number dynamics into account is employed to analyze the performance of the MOPA laser system, and a good agreement with the experimental data is obtained.

Abstract:A diode-bar side-pumped YAG/Nd:YAG/YAG composite crystal laser is presented. A maximum output power of 18.4 W at 1.064 μm with a slop efficiency of 57% and an optical-optical conversion efficiency of 46% was obtained for a pump power of 40 W. Compared with a side-pumped conventional crystal laser in the same experimental conditions, the side-pumped composite crystal laser improved the optical-to-optical conversion efficiency by 12%. Experimental results indicate that a composite crystal can depress the thermal effects effectively and improve the optical-to-optical conversion efficiency easily in the diode side-pumped lasers. The composite crystal has great potential in high-power diode side-pumped lasers.

Abstract:We report a high-power diode-laser (LD) side-pumped rod Tm:YAG laser of around 2 mu m. The laser was water-cooled at 8 degrees C and yielded a maximum output power of 267 W at 2.07 mu m, which is the highest output power for an all solid-state cw 2.07 mu m rod Tm:YAG laser reported as far as we know. The corresponding optical-optical conversion efficiency was 20.7%, and the slope efficiency was about 29.8%, respectively. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Diffused quantum wells (DFQW) optical devices have been widely investigated for use in optical electronics integrated circuits. In this paper, we report on the performance of five-period (200 Angstrom In0.53Ga0.47As0.57P0.43 barrier and 60 Angstrom In0.53Ga0.47As well) DFQW optical amplifiers and modulators. The results show that the QW amplifiers and modulators maintain at single guiding mode operation after the QW structure has been annealed. The tuning range of the operational wavelength of QW optical amplifiers is 34meV without a significant degradation in the modal gain peak by interdiffusing the QWs. The QW interdiffusion was accomplished by P+ ion implantation to the upper region of the top cladding layer of the multilayer structure and followed by rapid thermal annealing such that the implanted ions did not damage the QW structures. The I-V characteristics of the implanted QW are similar to that of the unimplanted. Concerning the TE electro-absorptive modulation, a large contrast ratio (CR) of 35dB can be obtained at lambda (op) = 1.55 mum under a small bias of -1.5V for a 500 mum long modulator. For TM mode, a slightly higher CR of 37dB can be obtained at the operation wavelength although the reverse bias voltage is double.

Abstract:This is a report on a 100 W, 20 mJ, 1 ps Yb:YAG thin-disk regenerative amplifier. A homemade Yb:YAG thin-disk, Kerr-lens mode-locked oscillator with turn-key performance and microjoule-level pulse energy is used to seed the regenerative chirped-pulse amplifier. The amplifier is placed in airtight housing. It operates at room temperature and exhibits stable operation at a 5 kHz repetition rate, with a pulse-to-pulse stability less than 1%. By employing a 1.5 mm-thick beta barium borate crystal, the frequency of the laser output is doubled to 515 nm, with an average power of 70 W, which corresponds to an optical-to-optical efficiency of 70%. This superior performance makes the system an attractive pump source for optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifiers in the near-infrared and mid-infrared spectral range. Combining the turn-key performance and the superior stability of the regenerative amplifier, the system facilitates the generation of a broadband, CEP-stable seed. Providing the seed and pump of the optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) from one laser source eliminates the demand of active temporal synchronization between these pulses. This work presents a detailed guide to set up and operate a Yb:YAG thin-disk regenerative amplifier, based on chirped-pulse amplification (CPA), as a pump source for an optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifier.

Abstract:An effective diode-side-pumped joule-level square-rod Nd:glass multipass amplifier with 1 Hz repetition rate is developed. A Pockels cell is used to extend the amplification-pass to twelve-pass. The linear depolarization compensation method and adaptive optics based wavefront aberration correction method are used to minimize the thermal effects. Combined with the relay-imaging technology and beam-shaping method, good beam quality is obtained. Under the small-signal gain of 3.23 and the input energy of 50 mu J, the output energy of 1 J and the net gain of 2x10(4) are realized. The effective energy-extraction efficiency in the whole aperture of Nd:glass rod is 12 degrees 70. The total wavefront aberration is 1.1 mu m (peak valley). The Strehl Ratio is 0.62, and 90% of far-field energy is concentrated in 3 times the diffraction limit. The near-field modulation index of twelve-pass amplification at 1 J is 1.4. Abstract:We present a pumping scheme for a quasi-three-level solid-state laser. The scheme uses a slab laser configuration with the pump light incident from the slab corners. A diode-corner-pumped composite Yb:YAG-YAG slab laser operating in high-power cw mode was designed to prove the scheme. As much as 520 W of output power was obtained from a single 1-mm-thick composite slab with 0.5-at. %-doped Yb:YAG. The slope efficiency and the optical-to-optical efficiency with respect to the pump power were 32% and 25%, respectively. This result shows the validity of the corner-pumping concept and its feasibility in the development of high-power solid-state lasers.

Abstract:We report on a continuous-wave (CW) pumped cryogenically cooled rod Yb:YAG regenerative amplifier delivering uncompressed 12-mJ, 90-ps, 1030-nm pulses at a 1-kHz repetition rate. The amplifier demonstrates an efficiency of 31.7%. A symmetric cavity design was utilized to compensate for the substantial thermal lensing effect, yielding a final measured beam quality of 1.1 in both horizontal and vertical directions. After significant gain narrowing, the measured spectra exhibit a bandwidth of 0.3 nm corresponding to an approximately 5 ps transform-limited pulse.

Externally Modulated, Diode Seeded Yb3+-Doped Fiber Mopa Pumped High Power Optical Parametric Oscillator

Abstract:Here we report a high power, pulsed optical parametric oscillator (OPO) at 3.5 mu m by using a MgO:PPLN crystal as the gain medium. The OPO itself was pumped by a semiconductor diode-seeded, Yb3+-doped fiber Master Oscillator Power Amplifier (MOPA) operating at 1062nm. An OPO output power as high as 11W at an overall slope efficiency of 67% was achieved, with nearly 2.7W and 8.2W of optical power obtained at 3.5 mu m and 1.5 mu m respectively. Due to the fast response time of the external modulator, it is possible to implement active pulse shaping on a nanosecond time-scale. Using adaptive pulse shaping of the seed laser (using an external modulator) we demonstrated a reduction in the impact of dynamic gain saturation and optical Kerr/Raman nonlinearities within the fibre MOPA obtaining shaped signal and idler pulses at the OPO output and reduced spectral bandwidths. We have also investigated the dependence of the OPO build-up time and energy transfer efficiency on pump pulse peak power and shape. The build-up time shows an exponential dependence on the pulse peak power and as expected decreases with an increase in pulse peak power. Analyzing the shift in spectral peak at 1.5 mu m it is possible to estimate the internal temperature of the crystal for various pump powers. Our experiments were pump-power limited and considerable scope remains for further power-scaling of the OPO output using this approach.

Abstract:A novel side-pumped structure with microlens-free diode arrays and a lensduct was demonstrated. This structure is much more robust and simple than traditional approach of a microlens-conditioned diode arrays with a lensduct. A quasi-CW diode arrays side-pumped KD*P Q-switched Yb:YAG slab laser has been demonstrated. An output energy of ∼10 mJ/pulse with pulse width as short as ∼20ns is obtained at 1–10 Hz repetition rate. To our knowledge, this is the shortest pulse width of Electro-optic Q-switched laser output by using Yb:YAG as the gain medium.

Abstract:We demonstrated a high average power, high beam quality, narrow linewidth, quasicontinuous wave (QCW) diode-pumped 1064-nm Nd:YAG amplifier. A narrow-linewidth QCW pulse Nd:YAG oscillator was employed as the seed laser, providing a maximum average power of 53.4 W at a pulse repetition frequency of 500 Hz and pulse width of 108 μ s with a beam quality factor M 2 = 1.21. After that, a two-stage double-pass Nd:YAG amplifier was performed. The amplifier delivers a maximum output power of 238 W with a linewidth of 0.4 pm and a tunable range of 119.3 pm. The beam quality was measured to be M 2 = 1.65. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the highest average power and the highest brightness for a narrow-linewidth QCW microsecond pulse 1064-nm laser.
Multi-stage ytterbium fiber-amplifier seeded by a gain-switched laser diode

Abstract:We demonstrated all-fiber amplification of 11 ps pulses from a gain-switched laser diode at 1064 nm. The diode was driven at a repetition rate of 40 MHz and delivered 13 $\mu$W of fiber-coupled average output power. For the low output pulse energy of 325 fJ we have designed a multi-stage core pumped pre-amplifier in order to keep the contribution of undesired amplified spontaneous emission as low as possible. By using a novel time-domain approach for determining the power spectral density ratio (PSD) of signal to noise, we identified the optimal working point for our pre-amplifier. After the pre-amplifier we reduced the 40 MHz repetition rate to 1 MHz using a fiber coupled pulse-picker. The final amplification was done with a cladding pumped Yb-doped large mode area fiber and a subsequent Yb-doped rod-type fiber. With our setup we reached a total gain of 73 dB, resulting in pulse energies of >5.6 $\mu$J and peak powers of >0.5 MW. The average PSD-ratio of signal to noise we determined to be 18/1 at the output of the final amplification stage.

Abstract:A quasi-continuous wave laser diode side-pumped passively Q-switched Yb:YAG slab laser with Cr4+:YAG saturable absorber has been demonstrated in order to understand the pulse properties of Yb:YAG crystal. To our knowledge the maximum 69% extraction efficiency is achieved by the system. 44μJ pulse energy and 1.64KW peak power with near diffraction-limited beam quality are presented at 25Hz repetition rate. The build-up time of the Q-giant in the passively Q-switched laser is shown.

Abstract:We report a periodically poled magnesium-oxide-doped lithium niobate (PPMgLN) based optical parametric oscillator (OPO) pumped by a diode-seeded, linearly polarized, high-power, pulsed, ytterbium fiber master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA). Using adaptive pulse shaping of the seed laser (using an external modulator), we demonstrate a reduction in the impact of dynamic gain saturation and optical Kerr/Raman nonlinearities within the fiber MOPA, obtaining shaped signal and idler pulses at the OPO output and reduced spectral bandwidths. A maximum average output power of 26.5 W was obtained from the MOPA at 1062 run. An output power as high as 11 W from the OPO at an overall slope efficiency of 67% was achieved, with 2.7 W of output power obtained at a wavelength of 3.5 mu m. Abstract:A high-power single-longitudinal-mode Ho:YAG laser operating at 2090.8 nm was demonstrated by using a dual-crystal, double-pass MOPA architecture. 6.2 W single-longitudinal-mode laser was extracted from the amplifier at the pump power of 22 W combined with around 23 mW injected seed laser, corresponding to an optical-to-optical efficiency of 28.2 % and a slope efficiency of 36.2 % for the double-pass Ho:YAG MOPA laser system. The maximum small-signal gain of 26.2 dB was obtained with around 10 mW input seed laser. The beam quality factor was measured as M2 ~ 1.27.
