Abstract:As one of the most promising anode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), SnO2 attracts wide research attention. The practical application of SnO2 anodes, however, is mainly hampered by huge volume variation during cycling and large initial irreversible capacity. In this paper, three-dimensional porous SnO2-Fe2O3 composite films have been fabricated using the electrostatic spray deposition technique. As an anode for LIBs, the hierarchical porous SnO2-Fe2O3 film possesses a high reversible capacity (1034.1 mAh g-1) and a high initial Coulombic efficiency of 82.9% at a current density of 0.2 A g-1. At the same time, it shows good capacity retention with a capacity of 1025.6 mAh g-1 after 240 cycles and excellent rate performance. The enhanced lithium storage performance should be attributed to the synergistic effect between SnO2 and Fe2O3, as well as the three-dimensional hierarchical porous structure. The results demonstrate that such a three-dimensional porous composite anode shows great potential for application in high-energy lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:A novel 3D porous nano-Ni/Fe3O4 composite film is prepared by electrodepositing 3D porous nano-Ni onto a Cu current collector followed by electrochemical plating of Fe3O4 nanoflakes. As an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the resultant 3D porous nano-Ni/Fe3O4 composite film shows an improved initial columbic efficiency of 86.0%, high capacity and good cycle stability (951.9 mA h g(-1) at 1 C up to 50 cycles), as well as enhanced rate capability. This unique electrode configuration possesses the following features: high Fe3O4- electrolyte contact area, direct contact between each naonflake and its 'own' current collector of nano-Ni, fast Li+ diffusion and better accommodation of volume change. It suggests that the 3D porous nano-Ni/Fe3O4 composite film, synthesized by the two-step electrodeposition strategy, is a promising anode material for high energy-density lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:A novel 3D porous Si–O–C/Ni thick film anode is successfully prepared by electrodeposition of porous Ni on Cu substrate and galvanostatical electrodeposition of Si–O–C composite on porous Ni substrate. The 3D porous Si–O–C/Ni thick film is electrochemically activated at a current density of 50 μA cm−2 for the first cycle and 200 μA cm−2 (0.5 C) for the subsequent cycles, it displays superior electrochemical performance with discharge capacity of 706.3 mAh g−1 of Si after 100 cycles. The properties of this thick film is analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analyzer (STEM-EDX). The results show that Si–O–C composite not only covers the surface area of porous Ni but also attaches to the highly porous dendritic walls, along with the porous structure of Ni which provides proper accommodation for the volume change of silicon during the lithiation/delithiation processes, are believed to result in the high capacity and excellent cyclability.

Abstract:Sn is used as an anode material in lithium-ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity, conductivity, and safety. However, due to the huge volume change during charging and discharging, it suffers serious mechanical degradation, and the capacity rapidly decays. In this study, a simple and feasible strategy was used to electroplate Sn on Cu foam, followed by heat treatment to obtain Sn composite anodes (Sn/Cu3Sn/CuO/SnO). The composite anode served to mitigate the volumetric expansion that was a consequence of the lithiation-delithiation process. It also prevented electrode pulverization and ensured that the overall integrity of the electrode was maintained, thereby enhancing its electrochemical performance. The capacity of the electrode reached 653.56 mAh/g at a current density of 0.2 C after 300 charge-discharge cycles. Thus, the prepared composite materials had a high capacity and long-term cyclic stability.
Highly Porous Ti/SnO2 Network Composite Film As Stable Binder-Free Anode Materials for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Electrodes with three-dimensional (3D) nanostructure are expected to improve the energy and power densities of lithium ion batteries. Herein, we report a 3D porous Ti/SnO2 nanocomposite which was prepared by a novel experimental procedure combining the dealloying technique and hydrothermal treatment. Its structure and electrochemical properties were investigated with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy and galvanostatic charge-discharge tests. The results of electrochemical tests showed that the porous composite anode presented the largest reversible capacity of 616.0 mA h g(-1) at the first cycle; and it still delivered a reversible Li storage capacity of 432.5 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles. Our work suggests the possibility of further improving the specific capacity/energy density of 3D microelectrodes by designing ordered hybrid nanostructure arrays. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:To improve the lithium storage performance of SnO2 anode for lithium-ion batteries, a one-dimensional hollow nanostructured SnO2@C composite has been synthesized by a well-designed facile approach. The good conductive and flexible carbon component can not only enhance the conductivity of whole composite but also buffer the volume change of key SnO2 component. With thin shells, meanwhile, the hollow structure can not only provide free space for accommodating the SnO2 volume change, but also shorten the diffusion length for both lithiun-ions and electrons. As expectedly, the synergistic effect of carbon and hollow structure offers the as-prepared SnO2@C composite with good structural stability and electrochemical properties. Consequently, the as-prepared SnO2@C composite exhibits good cycling and superior rate performance as an anode for lithium-ion batteries, a high capacity of 797 mAh g(-1) is obtained at 200 mA g(-1) after 390 cycles as well as 972, 887, 836, 751, 668, and 606 mAh g(-1) can be obtained at 100, 300, 500, 1000, 2000, and 3000 mA g(-1), respectively. Abstract:A novel three-dimensional nanostructured, namely nanoporous and irregular nanopillar, composite Cu-Sn anode material for lithium-ion batteries was synthesized by directly oxidizing copper foil slightly in air and deoxidizing under H 2 /Ar atmosphere. Following that, Sn layer was deposited on as-prepared Cu substrate by the direct current sputtering technique. The morphology, constituent, and electrochemical performance of the obtained samples were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer, and galvanostatic cycling test. The as-prepared Cu-Sn electrode (deposition time 10 min) exhibits a stable coulombic efficiency around 95 % over 50 cycles. The 50th specific capacity is 590 mA h/g at the current of 0.3 C, and at the high rate of 12 C, it exhibits 376 mA h/g which shows a high specific capacity and remarkable rate performance as an anode for lithium-ion batteries. The special 3D nanostructure, herein, can not only effectively offer enough space to accommodate large volume change but also act as structural reinforcement during electrochemical reaction. The simple fabrication approach of this novel nanostructure can be further extended to other anode materials with remarkable electrochemical property.

Abstract:A three-dimensional (3D) porous nano-Ni supported Si composite film is successfully fabricated by the combination of hydrogen bubble template electrodeposition of porous nano-Ni film and radiofrequency magnetron sputtering amorphous silicon. As anode for lithium-ion batteries, the 3D porous Ni/Si composite film shows noticeable electrochemical performance with high capacity of 2444mAhg−1 at a current density of 0.84Ag−1, superior capacity retention of 83% after 100 cycles, as well as excellent rate capability with 1420 and 1273mAhg−1 at charge–discharge current densities of 4.2Ag−1 and 8.4Ag−1 after 100 cycles, respectively. The enhanced electrochemical performance is mainly attributed to the highly porous conductive architecture, which provides good mechanical support and electron conducting pathway for active silicon and alleviates the structure degradation caused by volume expansion during the cycling process.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) porous amorphous SnO2 thin films were deposited on Ni foam substrates by Electrostatic Spray Deposition (ESD) technique as anodes for Li-ion batteries. These films display good capacity retention of 94.8% after 100 cycles at 0.5C and rate capability of 362mAh/g at 10C. The improved performance originates from the fact that the 3D porous structure offers a “buffer zone” to accommodate the large volume change during cycling, and the foam-like substrate maximizes the contact area between electrode and electrolyte. The facile ESD method can be potentially extended to prepare other 3D porous functional materials.

Abstract:A three‐dimensional porous core‐shell Sn@carbon anode on nickel foam substrate was fabricated by electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) technique followed by high temperature treatment. The carbon shell with a thickness of about 3.2 nm was formed on porous Sn structure at high temperature. 3D porous structure and carbon shell were designed to buffer volume expansion/shrinkage of Sn lattice upon cycling and increase the electrical conductivity. After 315 charge/discharge cycles Sn@carbon anode exhibited high specific capacity of 638 mAh g −1 with the low capacity fade of average 0.11 mAh g −1 per cycle. Sn@carbon based anodes was demonstrated to have promising potential for high performance lithium ion batteries application.

Abstract:Amorphous SnO2 nanoparticles embedded into a three-dimensional porous carbon matrix labeled as Am-SnO2@P-C are precisely customized through a phase separation process of tin salts and polyacrylonitrile/polyvinylpyrrolidone/N, N-dimethylformamide polymer mixed solution with the presence of deionized water and combining with heat treatments. The targeted composite powders are characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscope, transmission electron microscope, and scanning electron microscope, in which amorphous SnO2 nanoparticles with ultrafine diameters are uniformly distributed across the three-dimensional porous carbon matrix. The Am-SnO2@P-C composite electrode can deliver an initial discharge and charge specific capacity of 1557.6 and 1194.4 mAh/g with an initial coulombic efficiency of 76.7 % at 100 mA/g, and the discharge specific capacity can be retained at 886.4 mAh/g after 200 cycles. Moreover, the Am-SnO2@P-C composite electrode also exhibits great rate capability, in which the electrode can deliver a reversible capacity of 581.1 mAh/g at the current density as high as 1.0 A/g with a capacity retention of 92.8 % after 500 cycles. Furthermore, the kinetics investigations of pseudocapacitive contributions and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy on the as-prepared composite electrodes demonstrate the fast electrochemical kinetics of the Am-SnO2@P-C electrode due to the synergistic effect of the ultrafine size of amorphous SnO2 nanoparticles and the porous carbon matrix. Those findings and understandings of the SnO2 based electrodes may offer some a prospective strategy of the metal-oxide based anodes for lithium-ion batteries in the field of energy storages.

Abstract:A binder-free three-dimensional (3D) porous Cu6Sn5 anode was prepared for lithium-ion batteries. In this novel approach, tin was deposited by electroless-plating on copper foam which was served as anode current collector as well as the source of copper for Cu6Sn5 alloy formation. With optimized post-treatment condition, Cu6Sn5 alloy with thickness of 1.2μm was formed on the surface of copper foam network. 3D porous Sn–Cu6Sn5 and Cu3Sn–Cu10Sn3–Cu6Sn5 composite anodes were also prepared for comparison. Electrochemical tests showed that 3D porous Cu6Sn5 anode exhibits the best electrochemical performance in terms of specific capacitance and cycleability, which delivers a rechargeable capacity of 404mAhg−1 over 100 cycles.
In Situ Fabrication of Nano Porous NiO-Capped Ni3P Film As Anode for Li-Ion Battery with Different Lithiation Path and Significantly Enhanced Electrochemical Performance

Abstract:Nickel phosphide (Ni3P) is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries owing to its high specific capacity, though significant improvement in its cycling stability is highly desired. Here we propose an effective and low-cost solution via a three-dimensional construction of porous NiO covered Ni3P films over a substrate of Ni foam, through electroless plating of P-rich Ni3P and subsequent in situ oxidation in air. The in situ oxidation of P-rich Ni3P resulted in the formation of nano porous NiO capping layer. Remarkable enhancement in the cycling stability of such a composite anode was thus realized. The initial discharge capacity for a CR2016-type coin cell was as high as 920 mA h g(-1), and there was still a reversible capacity of 550 mA h g(-1) after 60 cycles at a current density of 38.8 mA g(-1). The presence of porous NiO capping layer changed the lithiation path and significantly improved the cycling performance. The decreased resistance in charge transport due to the existence of adequate channels for Li ions diffusion also enhanced rate performance. A pristine Ni3P films was researched as a comparison. Abstract:Both thin two-dimensional (2D) and hollow nanostructural materials are of great potential for high-performance anodes of lithium-ion batteries owing to their unique structural properties and surface characteristics. In this context, tin dioxide (SnO2) materials possessing well-designed thin 2D or hollow nanostructures have attracted immense attention and been considered as promising candidates to serve as anodes for advanced lithium-ion batteries. It is believed that thin 2D hollow nanostructures of SnO2 materials will have the advantages of both thin 2D and hollow nanostructures but they are difficult to be prepared due to the increased complexity of structures. Herein, a peculiar thin 2D hollow nanostructure of SnO2/carbon (SnO2/C) composite, composed of carbon in-situ coating thin SnO2 hollow nanosheets, has been prepared through a well-designed strategy. It is thus clear that this composite possesses the advantages of both thin 2D and hollow nanostructures as an anode for lithium-ion batteries. Expectedly, it is demonstrated that thus peculiar architecture offers the as-prepared SnO2/C composite superior electrochemical kinetics and outstanding structural stability. As a result, the as-prepared SnO2/C composite exhibits outstanding electrochemical lithium storage performance, delivering 707.8 and 483.2 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at 200 and 1000 mA g−1, respectively, as well as superior rate capabilities.

Abstract:Tin dioxide (SnO2)-based materials have been considered to be promisingly alternative advanced anode materials for lithium-ion batteries and thus attracted wide attention. So far, the research focus of SnO2-based anode materials is to search and develop effective strategies for overcoming the obstacles, such as rapid capacity fading and poor rate capability, which seriously impede the practical application of SnO2-based electrodes. Herein, we have successfully combined nanoscale SnO2 with 3-dimensional carbon (C) conductivity framework to form a 3-dimensional unparalleled SnO2/C composite constructed by closely interconnected hollow nanospheres with quasi-sandwich structures. When evaluated as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, the as-prepared SnO2/C composite exhibits improved cycling performance and high rate capability, delivering a high capacity of 576.6 mAh g−1 at 200 mA g−1 even after 500 cycles, and a capacity of 411.7 mAh g−1 even at 5 A g−1 during rate test. The unparalleled 3-dimensional architecture should be responsible for the good electrochemical performance.
Facile Preparation of Porous Mn2SnO4/Sn/C Composite Cubes As High Performance Anode Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:In recent years, Sn-based materials have been explored as potential anodes for high energy lithium-ion batteries. However, their severe volume expansion in lithiation procedure could lead to poor cycling property and inferior rate capability, which limit the applications of Sn-based materials in lithium-ion batteries. In this study, we have designed and prepared uniform Mn2SnO4/Sn/carbon composite cubic particles with a porous structure as anode material through facile hydrothermal method and subsequent annealing process The results demonstrate that the well-crystallized three-dimensional (3D) cubes with rounded corners consist of nanoparticles uniformly arranged in carbon matrix. The as-made Mn2SnO4/Sn/C anode exhibits excellent electrochemical performance and delivers 908 mA h g(-1) of discharge capacity up to the 100th cycle at a current density of 500 mA g(-1), with a Coulombic efficiency above 97%. The remarkable performance can be attributed to the formation of unique conductive frameworks and the porous structure.
3-Dimensional Hierarchically Porous ZnFe2O4/C Composites with Stable Performance As Anode Materials for Li-ion Batteries

Abstract:3-Dimensional hierarchically porous ZnFe2O4/C composites with interconnected macropores and co-continuous hollow skeletons are facilely synthesized and used as anode materials for Li-ion batteries. The interconnected macropores impede the agglomeration of primary particles and buffer the volumetric variations, hollow mesoporous skeletons not only improve the interfacial contact area between electrode and electrolyte but also facilitate lithium ions transfer rate. Moreover, N-doped carbon layer further enhances the conductivity and mechanical strength of skeletons, as well as accelerates electron transfer during repeated discharge and charge process. The as-prepared 3-dimensional hierarchically porous ZnFe2O4/C composites possess excellent Li-ion storage properties, delivering a high reversible capacity of 972 mAh g(-1) at 200 mA g(-1) after 100 cycles and a decent specific capacity of 711 mAh g(-1) even at a large current density of 1000 mA g(-1) after 400 cycles. These values are among the highest reported for ZnFe2O4-based materials with different morphologies and nanostructures. The resultant ZnFe2O4/C composites display the potential practical application for high-performance Li-ion batteries.
A Hierarchical SnO2@Ni6MnO8 Composite for High-Capacity Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Semiconductor-based composites are potential anodes for Li-ion batteries, owing to their high theoretical capacity and low cost. However, low stability induced by large volumetric change in cycling restricts the applications of such composites. Here, a hierarchical SnO2@Ni6MnO8 composite comprising Ni6MnO8 nanoflakes growing on the surface of a three-dimensional (3D) SnO2 is developed by a hydrothermal synthesis method, achieving good electrochemical performance as a Li-ion battery anode. The composite provides spaces to buffer volume expansion, its hierarchical profile benefits the fast transport of Li+ ions and electrons, and the Ni6MnO8 coating on SnO2 improves conductivity. Compared to SnO2, the Ni6MnO8 coating significantly enhances the discharge capacity and stability. The SnO2@Ni6MnO8 anode displays 1030 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1) and exhibits 800 mAh g(-1) under 0.5 A g(-1), along with high Coulombic efficiency of 95%. Furthermore, stable rate performance can be achieved, indicating promising applications.
Synthesis of SnO2/Sn@carbon Nanospheres Dispersed in the Interspaces of a Three-Dimensional SnO2/Sn@carbon Nanowires Network, and Their Application As an Anode Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:In this work, a peculiar nanostructure of SnO2/Sn@carbon nanospheres dispersed in the interspaces of a three-dimensional SnO2/Sn@carbon nanowires network composite (denoted as SnO2/Sn@C) has been successfully fabricated by a facile strategy and confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, laser Raman spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization, illustrating the combination of the nanospheres and the 3-dimensional nanowires network. This architecture effectively withstands the volume change and restricts the agglomeration of SnO2/Sn during the cycling process. Moreover, the SnO2/Sn distributed in carbon matrix and the SnO2/Sn@carbon nanospheres dispersed in interspaces of three-dimensional SnO2/Sn@carbon nanowires network facilitate electron and ion transport throughout the electrode. As a result, this composite exhibits excellent performance as a potential anode material for lithium ion batteries and delivers a reversible capacity of 678.6 mA h g(-1) at 800 mA g(-1), even after 500 cycles.
