Abstract:Resin supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (R-nZVI) was synthesized by the borohydride reduction method. Batch experiments were conducted to evaluate the factors affecting Cr(VI) removal. It was found that nZVI loads, resin dose, pH value and initial concentration of Cr(VI) were all important factors. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the nZVI particles in R-nZVI became sphere after reacting with Cr(VI). This phenomenon was attributed to the co-precipitation of Cr(III) and Fe(III) on the surface of resin. X-ray diffraction pattern confirmed that Fe(0) diminished after the reaction. At optimum conditions, the Cr(VI) removal efficiency was 84.4% when the initial concentration of Cr(VI) was 20.0 mg/L. Regeneration of R-nZVI and resin was possible. R-nZVI can also remove Cr(III) efficiently. However, the removal mechanisms of Cr(VI) (anion) and Cr(III) (cation) are different. The former is chemical reduction, while the latter is ion exchange at pH below 6.3 and precipitation at pH above 6.3. This study demonstrates that R-nZVI has the potential to become an effective agent for treating wastewater containing Cr(VI) and Cr(III).

Abstract:A removal mechanism of chromate (Cr) by synthesized kaolin supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (K-nZVI) from aqueous solution is demonstrated. Parameters which potentially influenced the functioning of K-nZVI have been investigated as well. Based on the scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopes, X-ray crystal powder diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy identifications, we confirm that amorphous Fe-0 core/FexOy shell nZVI can be successfully loaded into the pores and cracks, and onto the surface of kaolin. Removal efficiency of Cr by K-nZVI decreased with increasing initial pH and Cr(VI) concentration, but increased while K-nZVI dosage increased. Humic acid and phosphate had similar dual impacts on chromium removal by K-nZVI, and the inhibitory effect was obvious at high concentrations in spite of their different reaction mechanisms. In contrast, high concentrations of sulfate and nitrate could advance the chromium removal. Adsorption isotherms indicate that the removal processes are endothermic. The data obtained can be better explained with Langmuir than Freundlich model. At the conditions of 318K and optimized pH 4.0, the maximum adsorption capacity was 33.39mgg(-1) illustrating that K-nZVI was effective for the removal of total Cr. The removal mechanism is proposed to divide into four phases, including: (1) aqueous Cr(VI) ions are captured on the surface of K-nZVI; (2) the captured Cr(VI) are partly reduced to Cr(III) accompanied by Fe-0 oxidizing to Fe2+; (3) part of oxidized Fe2+ continues to reduce Cr(VI); and (4) produced Cr(III), Fe2+, and Fe3+ are formed passivation layers on the K-nZVI surface which prevent further removal of chromium and result in redundant Fe-0.

Abstract:Passivation of nanoscale zerovalent iron hinders its efficiency in water treatment, and loading another catalytic metal has been found to improve the efficiency significantly. In this study, Cu/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles were prepared by liquid-phase chemical reduction for removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from wastewater. Synthesized bimetallic nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmet-Teller isotherm, and X-ray diffraction. The results showed that Cu loading can significantly enhance the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) by 29.3% to 84.0%, and the optimal Cu loading rate was 3% (wt%). The removal efficiency decreased with increasing initial pH and Cr(VI) concentration. The removal of Cr(VI) was better fitted by pseudo-second-order model than pseudo-first-order model. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the Cr(VI) removal was spontaneous and endothermic, and the increase of reaction temperature facilitated the process. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that Cr(VI) was completely reduced to Cr(III) and precipitated on the particle surface as hydroxylated Cr(OH)3 and CrxFe1-x(OH)3 coprecipitation. Our work could be beneficial for the application of iron-based nanomaterials in remediation of wastewater.

Abstract:Starch coated nanoscale zerovalent iron (S-nZVI) was immobilized in activated carbon (AC) and its Cr (VI) removal characteristics were studied. Macroscopic evidence and mechanism analysis proved that S-nZVI and AC were closely linked and mutual complementary. Different factors including pH of the original solution, reaction time, and mass ratio (S-nZVI@AC/Cr =10:1, 20:1, 30:1, 50:1, 60:1, 70:1) were studied to analyze the removal rate. Results showed that the removal rate of Cr (?) could reach 99.96% under the condition of pH of 5, and temperature =25 degrees C, when the mass ratio of S-nZVI@AC/Cr was 60:1. The removal of Cr(?) by S-nZVI@AC followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. X-ray diffraction (XRD) resulted demonstrate that S-nZVI@AC existed in a Fe3C state before reaction and in a Fe(III) state after reaction. XPS (X-ray photoelectrons spectroscopy) analysis suggested that the mechanism of Cr (VI) removal by S-nZVI@AC is adsorption and reduction. S-nZVI@AC might be a potential composite material for the purification and detoxification of Cr (VI) in water because of its efficiency and stability.
Synthesis of Chitosan-Stabilized Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron for Removal of Hexavalent Chromium from Surface Water

Abstract:The use of nanoscale zero-valent iron is a promising technology for in situ environment remediation. However, due to the extremely high reactivity, nanoscale zero-valent iron tends to agglomerate or is easily oxidized by air resulting in the reduction of their chemical reactivity. We present here a simple method for the synthesis of nanoscale zero-valent iron(mean particle size 82.4 rim) on the basis of chitosan as a stabilizer. This chitosan-stabilized nanoscale zero-valent iron show no changes in reduction activity on storage at room temperature in air for 2 months. The TGA curve demonstrated that after modification by chitosan nanoscale zero-valent iron had a good thermal stability below 340 degrees C. The synthesized chitosan-stabilized nanoscale zero-valent iron was powerful in reducing Cr(VI) and batch experiments indicated that after exposure to air atmosphere over a 60 d period the chitosan nanoscale zero-valent iron still exhibit high reducing capacity. Due to the presence of the -NH2 and -OH groups chitosan has a better ability to chelate Fe (M) and can inhibit the formation of Fe (III) -Cr (III) precipitation which increases the rates of iron corrosion and reduction of Cr(VI). Due to the good stability against oxidation in air the chitosan-stabilized nanoscale zero-valent iron have the potential to become an effective agent for in situ environment remediation.

Abstract:This study describes the chromium (VI) removal in aqueous solution by nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI)-Fe3O4 nanocomposites, which were prepared by a novel in situ reduction method. The effects of several factors, including ionic strength, temperature, co-existing anions and cations and natural organic matters were evaluated. The ionic strength was found to be insignificant to the removal efficiency, while temperature was critical. With the increase in temperature from 10–40°C, 32% removal efficiency increased within 2h from 49.96%. Most anions hindered the reaction, especially in high concentration, such as HCO3- and PO43-, causing a drop of the removal efficiency from 66.48% to 57.47% and 59.93% respectively. In contrast, both cations and moderate natural organic matter facilitated the removal of Cr(VI). It is noteworthy that calcium hardness can greatly promote the reaction, 100% removal efficiency was achieved within 90min and the rate constant k2 reached 0.528gmg−1min−1 after adding 40mgL−1 Ca2+, which was ten times more than that in other cases. Possible mechanism was presented, and TEM, SEM and FITR analyses were used to verify these speculations. Hopefully, these results can contribute to a better development of the water treatment facilitates for nZVI-Fe3O4 composites, maintaining its high efficiency in real aqueous environment.

Abstract:Nanoscale zero-valent iron supported on activated carbon (NZVI/AC) was synthesized by a modified potassium borohydride reduction method and characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and specific surface area (SSA). The effects of NZVI loading on AC, NZVI/AC dosage, pH, the initial concentration of Cr(VI), and temperature on the removal of Cr(VI) were investigated. XRD confirmed the existence of Fe0 and TEM revealed that the material consisted of mainly spherical bead-like particles aggregated into chains of individual units. The SSA of the iron particles and the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) indicated that the optimum iron loading was 25 %. Increase of NZVI/AC dosage and reaction concentration abated the removal of Cr(VI). Kinetics studies showed that removal of Cr(VI) is a two-step reaction and each step could be expressed by pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics, with initial Cr(VI) and temperature as variables. Total Cr was always almost equal to that of Cr(VI) under all tested conditions, which indicated that little Cr(III) existed in solution. Iron ions, which could cause secondary pollution in the environment, are almost not released from this system. These results demonstrated that NZVI/AC could potentially be used for Cr(VI) removal.
Efficient removal of Cr(VI) by chitosan cross-linked bentonite loaded nano-zero-valent iron composite: Performance and mechanism

Abstract:A nano-zero-valent iron loaded with 2-aminoterephthalic acid cross-linked chitosan/bentonite (2ACB@nZVI) was developed to remove Cr(VI) from aqueous solution through adsorption-reduction. It was characterized by FTIR, XRD, TGA, BET, SEM, EDS, electrochemistry and XPS. This analysis showed that chitosan cross-linked bentonite not only enhanced the adsorption effect of chitosan and its chemical stability, but also provided a good carrier for loading nZVI and effectively improves its reaction activity. The optimal mass ratios of chitosan: bentonite and 2ACB:nZVI for synthesizing the 2ACB@nZVI composite were 3:1 and 1:4, respectively. The pH value had a great influence on the removal rate of Cr(VI), and its optimal value was 2.0. This is because nZVI was more susceptible to corrosion under acidic conditions, and a large amount of Fe(II) was leached to reduce the adsorbed Cr(VI) on the surface of 2ACB@nZVI. The Cr(VI) removal by 2ACB@nZVI constituted a spontaneous endothermic reaction, aligning with both the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, with a maximum adsorption capacity reached 406.36 mg g −1 at 318 K. 2ACB@nZVI had a strong tolerance to co-existing ions, and the removal rate remained about 80 % after aging for 30 days or six cycles. The main mechanisms included electrostatic adsorption, complexation, reduction, and coprecipitation. Reduction contributed 86.67 % to the removal of Cr(VI), and Fe(II) was the key to Cr(VI) reduction. This study provided a new idea for the efficient treatment of Cr(VI) wastewater.

Abstract:Cr (VI) is indispensable in industrial manufacturing, and its extensive use leads to severe heavy-metal pollution in the water environment around people, posing a great danger to physical health and living environment of multitudinous organisms. Expanded graphite (EG) is considered as a typical material for adsorption, while nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) can be applied to degrade and sedimentate various organic or inorganic pollutants. In this study, a simultaneous collaboration of EG and nZVI is carried out, with the investigation on the influence of different test conditions for adsorption performances. These findings demonstrate that nZVI@EG manifests favourable adsorptive performance on the removal of hexavalent chromium efficiently. nZVI, acting as an electron donor, is supposed to reduce Cr (VI) to Cr (III), turning itself into iron oxide or hydroxide. The whole process is an exothermic reaction, accompanying chemical reduction and physical adsorption. And Cr (III) is fastened on the appearance by deposition of chromium hydroxide or ferrochromium complex precipitation, which greatly reduces the total chromium content in the aqueous solution. Herein, as a new composite adsorbent, nZVI@EG shows promising prospects of practical applications in water contamination and environmental remediation.

Abstract:For the first time, nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI)–Fe3O4 nanocomposites, prepared by an in situ reduction method, are employed for chromium(VI) removal in aqueous environment. 96.4% Cr(VI) could be removed by these novel materials within 2h under pH of 8.0 and initial Cr concentration of 20mgL−1, compared with 48.8% by bare nFe3O4 and 18.8% by bare nZVI. Effects of several factors, including mass composition of nZVI–Fe3O4 nanocomposites, initial pH and Cr(VI) concentration, were evaluated. The optimal ratio of nFe3O4 to nZVI mass lies at 12:1 with a fixed nZVI concentration of 0.05gL−1. Low pH and initial Cr(VI) concentration could increase both the Cr(VI) removal efficiency and reaction rate. Corresponding reaction kinetics fitted well with the pseudo second-order adsorption model. Free energy change (ΔG) of this reaction was calculated to be −4.6kJmol−1 by thermodynamic study, which confirmed its spontaneous and endothermic characteristic. The experimental data could be well described by the Langmuir and Freundlich model, and the maximum capacity (qmax) obtained from the Langmuir model was 100 and 29.43mgg−1 at pH 3.0 and 8.0, respectively. The reaction mechanism was discussed in terms of the mutual benefit brought by the electron transfer from Fe0 to Fe3O4.
Removal of Cr ( VI ) from water by double ⁃ surfactants modified nanoscale zero ⁃ valent iron

Abstract:In order to prevent the aggregation and oxidation of nanoscale zero⁃valent iron (nZVI) and enhance its ability to remove Cr(VI) from water, non⁃ionic surfactant polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP) and anionic surfactant sodium oleate(NaOA) were selected to modify nZVI simultaneously. Comparison of removal efficiency was investigated under different pH, materials′ status (dry or wet), initial concentration and coexisting ions. The reaction mechanism was further analyzed through XRD and XPS characterization, kinetics and curve fitting with adsorption isotherm models. It can be found that: 1acidic conditions are conducive to the removal of Cr(VI); 2the materials′ status makes significant difference to removal efficiency; 3equilibrium can be reached within 3 h with a removal efficiency above 90% and a maximum removal amount of 183.1 mg·g-1; 4the reaction process is fitted well with pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir model; 5the process makes a full transformation of Cr(VI) into Cr(III) under the reaction condition.

Abstract:Chitosan-Fe-0 nanoparticles (chitosan-Fe-0) were prepared using nontoxic and biodegradable chitosan as a stabilizer. Laboratory batch and column experiments were conducted to investigate the feasibility of using chitosan-Fe-0 for in situ reductive removal of Cr(VI) from water. Batch kinetic tests indicated that the overall disappearance of Cr(VI) may include both physical adsorption of Cr(VI) onto the chitosan-Fe0 surface and subsequent reduction of Cr(VI) to C(III). The rate of reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) can be expressed by a pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics and the rate constants increase with the increase in iron loading. Column experiments indicated that the chitosan-Fe-0 were highly deliverable in the column. When the column was treated with Cr(VI)-contaminated deionized water, the removal capacity of chitosan-Fe-0 was found to be about 32 mg Cr/g Fe(0). A 25% drop in the Cr(VI) removal capacity was found when treated with Cr(VI)-contaminated surface water.
Integrated green complexing agent and biochar modified nano zero-valent iron for hexavalent chromium removal: A characterisation and performance study

Abstract:In this study, nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) was loaded on biochar (BC) prepared from recycled waste peanut shells. The loaded BC in the composite was assumed to weaken the agglomeration of nZVI and the environmentally-friendly complexing agents sodium citrate (Cit) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) were used to establish and for the effective removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous environments. The characterisation results suggested that Cit and CMC not only inhibited the oxidation of nZVI, but also effectively improved its reactivity. The experimental results demonstrated that the Cr(VI) removal efficiency by nZVI was less than 20%, while enhanced the Cr(VI) removal efficiency to 80.73%, because CMC was coated on the nZVI surface for anti-passivation and improved the surface activity of nanoparticles. In addition, the Cr(VI) removal efficiency reached almost 100% with , and the citrate dissociated the passivation layer on the surface of the zero-valent iron particles to ensure the reactivity of the zero-valent iron. The reaction mechanism of includes adsorption, reduction, and co-precipitation, whereas also involves surface complexation reactions. The kinetic studies revealed that the removal of Cr(VI) by and followed the second-order reaction kinetic model, and the reaction rates of and were both higher than that of nZVI. The results indicate that the prepared systems are promising for Cr(VI) remediation in contaminated environments.

Removal of Cr(Vi) from Simulative Contaminated Groundwater by Iron Metal

Abstract:The Cr(VI) removal from simulative contaminated groundwater using zero-valent iron (Fe0) filings, Fe0 powder and nanoscale Fe0 in batch experimental mode was studied. Cr(VI) is a primary pollutant of some soils and groundwater. Zero-valent iron, an important natural reductant, could transform Cr(VI) to Cr(III) which is much less toxic and immobile. The Cr(VI) removal percentage was 87% at a metal to solution ratio of 6gl−1 for commercial iron powder (200mesh) in 120min, and 100% Cr(VI) was removed when the metal to solution ratio was 10gl−1. The results demonstrates that the Cr(VI) removal percentage was affected apparently by pH, the amount of Fe powder and the reaction temperature. The Cr(VI) removal percentage with nanoscale Fe0 was much higher than those with Fe0 filings or Fe0 powder at the same reaction time. Electrochemical analysis of the reaction process led to the conclusion that the Cr(VI) trended to form Cr(III) hydroxide under the reaction conditions. The kinetics analysis showed that Cr(VI) reduction by Fe0 could be described as a pseudo-first-order kinetics model.

Abstract:Chromium-containing wastewater is one of the major pollutants affecting water safety. The adsorption-reduction property of nano zero-valent iron particles (nZVI) is an effective way to counter chromium pollution. However, nZVI is affected by surface passivation as well as agglomeration in the process of use. To overcome this limitation and to strengthen its performance in the treatment of chromium-containing wastewater, we proposed a new approach by sodium alginate (SA) encapsulated nZVI loaded in the pores of aminated spherical magnesium hydroxide (MH-NH 2 ). The prepared ternary composite (/MH-NH 2 ) exhibited better stability, dispersibility, larger specific surface area, and more active sites. We found that /MH-NH 2 –1 could remove 97.92% of Cr(VI) from the solution within 5 min at pH = 3 without oxygen. Adsorption capacity of /MH-NH 2 –1 could reach 134.00 mg/g. Moreover, the acidic environment could achieve the slow release of OH − at the expense of MH-NH 2 carriers to increase the pH of the solution, enabling the generated Cr(III) to form Cr(OH) 3 and precipitate out of the solution. /MH-NH 2 could achieve the removal of total chromium from the solution in one step. This strategy contributed to the cheap and efficient separation of Cr(VI) together with Cr(III) from the wastewater.

Such composites were prepared through depositing nZVI particles onto MWCNTs by in situ reduction of ferrous sulfate and then characterized by TEM, SEM and XRD. The results showed that nZVI particles could disperse on the surface or into the network of MWCNTs. Compared to bare nZVI or nZVI-activated carbon composites, the nZVI-MWCNT nanocomposites exhibited around 36% higher efficiency on Cr(VI) removal. The mass ratio of nZVI to MWCNTs was optimized at 1:2, at ionic strength of 0.05M NaCl. The reaction followed a pseudo first-order model under different initial Cr(VI) concentrations and pHs. Low pH and initial Cr(VI) concentration could increase both removal efficiency and rate constants. Anions, such as SO(4)(2-), NO(3)(-) and HCO(3)(-), exhibited negative effects on the removal of Cr(VI), while the effects of PO(4)(3-) and SiO(3)(2-) were insignificant. Overall, nZVI-MWCNT nanocomposites offer a promising alternative material for the removal of Cr(VI) ions from wastewater.
Evaluation of Activated Carbon Fiber Supported Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron for Chromium (VI) Removal from Groundwater in a Permeable Reactive Column.

Abstract:An activated carbon fiber supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (ACF-nZVI) composite for Cr(VI) removal from groundwater was synthesized according to the liquid phase reduction method. The techniques of N2 adsorption/desorption, FESEM, EDX, XRD and XPS were used to characterize the ACF-nZVI composite and the interaction between the ACF-nZVI composite and Cr(VI) ions. Batch experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of several factors, including the amount of nZVI on activated carbon fiber (ACF), pH value, initial Cr(VI) concentration, and co-existing ions on Cr(VI) removal. The results indicate that presence of ACF can inhibit the aggregation of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) particles and increase its reactivity, and the Cr(VI) removal efficiency increases with increasing amounts of nZVI on ACF and a decrease in the initial Cr(VI) concentration. In acidic conditions, almost 100% of Cr(VI) in solution can be removed after 60 min of reaction, and the removal efficiency decreases with increasing initial pH values. The Cr(VI) removal is also dependent on the co-existing ions. Reusability experiments on ACF-nZVI demonstrate that the ACF-nZVI composite can keep a high reactivity after five successive reduction cycles. The removal mechanisms are proposed as a two-step interaction including the physical adsorption of Cr(VI) on the surface or inner layers of the ACF-nZVI composite and the subsequent reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) by nZVI.
Synthesis and Application of Modified Zero-Valent Iron Nanoparticles for Removal of Hexavalent Chromium from Wastewater

Abstract:Zero-valent iron nanoparticles (nZVI) modified with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as an anionic surfactant were successfully synthesized and applied to Cr (VI) removal. The prepared nanoparticles were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope (FSEM), energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS), and Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer (FT-IR). Meanwhile, the surface charges of the stabilized nanoparticles were also determined. In this study, the kinetics of particle aggregation and sedimentation were investigated. It was found that the modified nanoparticles had great stabilization. Effects of pH, contact time, dosage of nanoparticles, and initial Cr(VI) concentrations on removal efficiency of the heavy metal ions were investigated and optimized. The maximum removal efficiency of Cr(VI) was obtained at pH 3.0 and 25 °C, at the value of 98.919 %. Cr(VI) removal occurred fast, and achieved equilibrium after 120 min. The maximum removal capacity reached up to 253.68 mg g−1 dry nanoparticles at a 300-mg L−1 Cr(VI)-containing sample. Kinetics study showed a rapid removal dynamics fitting pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The equilibrium data was nicely fit to the Freundlich model and indicates the adsorption of Cr(VI) was highly favorable. The obtained results indicated that nZVI modified by SDS could be used as an efficient alternative for removal of heavy metals with enhanced removal capacity and application stability.

Abstract:Efficiently removing hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) using iron-based adsorbents under neutral pH conditions continues to pose a challenge. In this study, we constructed nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) supported by carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (OCNT) composites with iron-based dual active sites through the nitrilotriacetic acid modification (FOC-NA). The acid dissolution experiment, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman analysis proved these active sites consisted of iron-carboxylate complex (−COOFe(II)) and OCNT-confined nZVI (Fe 0 -in-OCNT). The existence of iron-based dual active sites enhanced electron transfer efficiency in Cr(VI) removal under neutral pH conditions. This leaded to a superior adsorption capacity for Cr(VI), as evidenced by a maximum adsorption capacity of 141.29 mg·g −1 at a pH of 6.5. Meanwhile, the formation of a Cr-containing product (−COOFe-O-Cr) on the surface of FOC-NA substantially hindered the re-release of chromium into the environment. Furthermore, this study proposed the significant involvement of active hydrogen atoms (H*) in the reduction of Cr(VI), as confirmed by quenching experiments and analyses using electron spin resonance (EPR), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The formation pathway and energy barrier of H* and the −COOFe-O-Cr complex were analyzed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This study provided insights for the rational design of iron-based adsorbents with dual active sites to facilitate the activation of H* for Cr(VI) reduction under neutral pH conditions.
