Abstract:The remarkable frequency stability of resonant systems in the optical domain (optical cavities and atomic transitions) can be harnessed at frequency scales accessible by electronics using optical frequency division. This capability is revolutionizing technologies spanning time keeping to high-performance electrical signal sources. A version of the technique called 2-point optical frequency division (2P-OFD) is proving advantageous for application to high-performance signal sources. In 2P-OFD, an optical cavity anchors two spectral endpoints defined by lines of a frequency comb. The comb need not be self-referenced, which greatly simplifies the system architecture and reduces power requirements. Here, a 2P-OFD microwave signal source is demonstrated with record-low phase noise using a microcomb. Key to this advance is a spectral endpoint defined by a frequency agile single-mode dispersive wave that is emitted by the microcomb soliton. Moreover, the system frequency reference is a compact all-solid-state optical cavity with a record Q-factor. The results advance integrable microcomb-based signal sources into the performance realm of much larger microwave sources.

Abstract:There has been increased interest in the use and manipulation of optical fields to address the challenging problems that have traditionally been approached with microwave electronics. Some examples that benefit from the low transmission loss, agile modulation and large bandwidths accessible with coherent optical systems include signal distribution, arbitrary waveform generation and novel imaging1. We extend these advantages to demonstrate a microwave generator based on a high-quality-factor (Q) optical resonator and a frequency comb functioning as an optical-to-microwave divider. This provides a 10 GHz electrical signal with fractional frequency instability of ≤8 × 10−16 at 1 s, a value comparable to that produced by the best microwave oscillators, but without the need for cryogenic temperatures. Such a low-noise source can benefit radar systems2 and improve the bandwidth and resolution of communications and digital sampling systems3, and can also be valuable for large baseline interferometry4, precision spectroscopy and the realization of atomic time5,6,7.

Abstract:Photonic synthesis of radio frequency waveforms revived the quest for unrivalled microwave purity by its seducing ability to convey the benefits of the optics to the microwave world. In this contribution, we will present a high-fidelity transfer of frequency stability between an optical reference and a microwave signal via a low-noise fiber-based frequency comb and cutting-edge photo-detection techniques. We will show the generation of the purest microwave signal with a fractional frequency stability below 6.5×10-16 at 1 s and a timing noise floor below 41 zs Hz-1/2 (phase noise below -173 dBc Hz-1 for a 12 GHz carrier). This outclasses existing sources and promises a new era for state-of-the-art microwave generation. The characterization is achieved through a heterodyne cross-correlation scheme with lowermost detection noise. This unprecedented level of purity can impact domains such as radar systems, telecommunications and time-frequency metrology. The measurements methods developed here can benefit the characterization of a broad range of signals.
10 GHz Generation with Ultra-Low Phase Noise via the Transfer Oscillator Technique

Abstract:Coherent frequency division of high-stability optical sources permits the extraction of microwave signals with ultra-low phase noise, enabling their application to systems with stringent timing precision. To date, the highest performance systems have required tight phase stabilization of laboratory grade optical frequency combs to Fabry-Perot optical reference cavities for faithful optical-to-microwave frequency division. This requirement limits the technology to highly-controlled laboratory environments. Here, we employ a transfer oscillator technique, which employs digital and RF analog electronics to coherently suppress additive optical frequency comb noise. This relaxes the stabilization requirements and allows for the extraction of multiple independent microwave outputs from a single comb, while at the same time, permitting low-noise microwave generation from combs with higher noise profiles. Using this method we transferred the phase stability of two high-Finesse optical sources at 1157 nm and 1070 nm to two independent 10 GHz signals using a single frequency comb. We demonstrated absolute phase noise below -106 dBc/Hz at 1-Hz from carrier with corresponding 1 second fractional frequency instability below $2\times10^{-15}$. Finally, the latter phase noise levels were attainable for comb linewidths broadened up to 2 MHz, demonstrating the potential for out-of lab use with low SWaP lasers.

Abstract:A simple approach to generate high-purity microwave signals based on a rational harmonic mode-locked fiber laser is proposed and demonstrated by incorporating an external cavity Mach-Zehnder interferometer filter to suppress the low-order harmonics. A pulse train of equal amplitude with a repetition rate of about 10 GHz, which is four times of the frequency of the microwave drive signal (similar to 2.5 GHz), is obtained. A high-spectral purity microwave signal at 10 GHz can he achieved by beating the filtered rational harmonics at a photodetector. The signal-to-noise ratio of the generated microwave signal is about 20 dB enhanced compared with the filter-free case. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:We show analytically as well as experimentally a photonic technique for generation of frequency-tunable microwave signals. The technique involves propagating an array of uniformly spaced optical combs with identical comb profile into a length of dispersive single-mode fiber (SMF) prior to photodetection. A new scheme that involves a supercontinuum source and a Fourier-domain programmable optical processor as a spectral filter is proposed to generate the required array of optical combs. For an initial optical comb with a fixed repetition rate and a given length of standard SMF, our scheme shows that by choosing appropriate values of the number of optical combs, the number of comb lines in each optical comb, as well as the frequency spacing between the adjacent optical combs, we can generate a microwave signal whose frequency can be tuned to any integer multiple of the optical comb's repetition frequency that lies within the bandwidth of the photodetector. Based on the proposed scheme, using a 2 GHz supercontinuum source as an initial optical comb, we demonstrate the generation of stable microwave signals tunable to 8, 10, and 12 GHz.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs are typically generated in the near-infrared wavelength range, where many mode-locked lasers operate. Nonlinear frequency conversion can then be used to extend optical frequency metrology to other spectral regions, such as the extreme ultraviolet (XUV). High-power frequency combs at the fundamental wavelength can efficiently drive nonlinear frequency conversions. Low phase noise is an important requirement because the frequency conversion process not only multiplies the carrier frequency but also the phase fluctuations. In this work, we have developed a low-noise frequency comb centered at 1030 nm with an average power of 230 W, a temporal pulse duration of 59 fs, and a peak power of 32 MW. One of the modes of the seed laser is phase-locked to a continuous wave reference laser stabilized to an ultra-stable high-finesse cavity. The residual integrated phase noise from 10 Hz to 10 MHz is 41 mrad, which is sufficiently low to address narrow transitions with kHz-level linewidths after the frequency conversion to XUV wavelengths.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs (OFCs) in the 1.65 µm wavelength band are promising for methane sensing and extended high-capacity optical communications. In this work, a frequency-modulated (FM) OFC is generated from a 1.65 µm single-section quantum well laser. This is characterized by a 1 kHz-wide beatnote signal at ∼19.4 GHz. Typical FM optical spectra are shown and optical linewidth of the OFC narrows through the mutual injection locking process in the comb formation. No distinct pulse train is observed on oscilloscope, which conforms with the FM operation. Furthermore, to add further evidence that four-wave mixing (FWM) is the driving mechanism of the comb formation, FWM frequency conversion characterization is conducted on a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) fabricated together with the tested laser. An efficiency of ∼-30 dB confirms the capability of FM mode locking.

Abstract:We present a transportable photonic microwave oscillator, porting optical stability to a 10 GHz microwave signal. The system is composed of two main sub-units: a compact 8 height-unit (HU) 194 THz ultra-stable laser with Hz linewidth showing a fractional frequency stability (modified Allan deviation) of 8.5 x 10(-15) at 1 s and a 3 HU ultra-low noise optical frequency comb used to phase-coherently divide the optical frequency reference's spectral purity down to a 10 GHz microwave signal. Characterizing the synthesized microwave by means of a commercial digital cross-correlator, a phase noise power spectral density of -70 dBc/Hz at 1 Hz and -160 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz Fourier frequency is measured, maintaining a white plateau at -165 dBc/Hz up to 10 MHz offset.

All-optical frequency division on-chip using a single laser

Abstract:The generation of spectrally pure high-frequency microwave signals is a critical functionality in fundamental and applied sciences, including metrology and communications. The development of optical frequency combs has enabled the powerful technique of optical frequency division (OFD) to produce microwave oscillations of the highest quality. The approaches for OFD demonstrated to date demand multiple lasers with space- and energy-consuming optical stabilization and electronic feedback components, resulting in device footprints incompatible with integration into a compact and robust photonic platform. Here, we demonstrate all-optical OFD on a single photonic chip driven with a single continuous-wave laser. We generate a dual-point frequency reference using the beat frequency of the signal and idler fields from a microresonator-based optical parametric oscillator (OPO), which achieves high phase stability due to the inherently strong signal-idler frequency correlations. We implement OFD by optically injecting the signal and idler fields from the OPO to a Kerr-comb microresonator on the same chip. We show that the two distinct dynamical states of Kerr cavities can be passively synchronized, allowing broadband frequency locking of the comb state, which transfers the stability of the OPO frequencies to the repetition rate of the Kerr comb. A 630-fold phase-noise reduction is observed when the Kerr comb is synchronized to the OPO, which represents the lowest noise generated on the silicon-nitride platform. Our work demonstrates a simple, effective approach for performing OFD and provides a pathway toward chip-scale devices that can generate microwave frequencies comparable to the purest tones produced in metrological laboratories. This technology can significantly boost the further development of data communications and microwave sensing.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser-based generation of radio frequency signals has produced astonishing improvements in achievable spectral purity, one of the basic features characterizing the performance of an radio frequency oscillator. Kerr frequency combs hold promise for transforming these lab-scale oscillators to chip-scale level. In this work we demonstrate a miniature 10 GHz radio frequency photonic oscillator characterized with phase noise better than −60 dBc Hz−1 at 10 Hz, −90 dBc Hz−1 at 100 Hz and −170 dBc Hz−1 at 10 MHz. The frequency stability of this device, as represented by Allan deviation measurements, is at the level of 10−10 at 1–100 s integration time—orders of magnitude better than existing radio frequency photonic devices of similar size, weight and power consumption.

Optical frequency division that leverages optical references and optical frequency combs has emerged as a powerful technique to generate microwaves with superior spectral purity than any other approaches4-7. Here we demonstrate a miniaturized optical frequency division system that can potentially transfer the approach to a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor-compatible integrated photonic platform. Phase stability is provided by a large mode volume, planar-waveguide-based optical reference coil cavity8,9 and is divided down from optical to mmWave frequency by using soliton microcombs generated in a waveguide-coupled microresonator10-12. Besides achieving record-low phase noise for integrated photonic mmWave oscillators, these devices can be heterogeneously integrated with semiconductor lasers, amplifiers and photodiodes, holding the potential of large-volume, low-cost manufacturing for fundamental and mass-market applications13.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs provide equidistant frequency markers in the infrared, visible and ultraviolet, and can be used to link an unknown optical frequency to a radio or microwave frequency reference. Since their inception, frequency combs have triggered substantial advances in optical frequency metrology and precision measurements and in applications such as broadband laser-based gas sensing and molecular fingerprinting. Early work generated frequency combs by intra-cavity phase modulation; subsequently, frequency combs have been generated using the comb-like mode structure of mode-locked lasers, whose repetition rate and carrier envelope phase can be stabilized. Here we report a substantially different approach to comb generation, in which equally spaced frequency markers are produced by the interaction between a continuous-wave pump laser of a known frequency with the modes of a monolithic ultra-high-Q microresonator via the Kerr nonlinearity. The intrinsically broadband nature of parametric gain makes it possible to generate discrete comb modes over a 500-nm-wide span (approximately 70 THz) around 1,550 nm without relying on any external spectral broadening. Optical-heterodyne-based measurements reveal that cascaded parametric interactions give rise to an optical frequency comb, overcoming passive cavity dispersion. The uniformity of the mode spacing has been verified to within a relative experimental precision of 7.3 x 10(-18). In contrast to femtosecond mode-locked lasers, this work represents a step towards a monolithic optical frequency comb generator, allowing considerable reduction in size, complexity and power consumption. Moreover, the approach can operate at previously unattainable repetition rates, exceeding 100 GHz, which are useful in applications where access to individual comb modes is required, such as optical waveform synthesis, high capacity telecommunications or astrophysical spectrometer calibration.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs, coherent light sources that connect optical frequencies with microwave oscillations, have become the enabling tool for precision spectroscopy, optical clockwork and attosecond physics over the past decades. Current benchmark systems are self-referenced femtosecond mode-locked lasers, but four-wave-mixing in high-Q resonators have emerged as alternative platforms. Here we report the generation and full stabilization of CMOS-compatible optical frequency combs. The spiral microcomb's two degrees-of-freedom, one of the comb line and the native 18 GHz comb spacing, are first simultaneously phase-locked to known optical and microwave references. Second, with pump power control, active comb spacing stabilization improves the long-term stability by six orders-of-magnitude, reaching an instrument-limited 3.6 mHz/sqrt(t) residual instability. Third, referencing thirty-three of the nitride frequency comb lines against a fiber comb, we demonstrate the comb tooth-to-tooth frequency relative inaccuracy down to 53 mHz and 2.8x10-16, heralding unprecedented chip-scale applications in precision spectroscopy, coherent communications, and astronomical spectrography.

Abstract:A more simple route to metrology standards The time standards set by atomic clocks are usually the domain of national metrology laboratories. Li et al. modulated the phase of two closely spaced laser lines to generate a comb of stable and equally spaced frequencies. They then used that comb to generate stable microwaves.
