Abstract:Thermally-activated temperature memory and multiple shape memory effects have been observed in amorphous polymers with a broad glass transition. In this work, we demonstrate that the same shape recovery behaviors can also be achieved through solvent absorption. We investigate the recovery behaviors of programmed Nafion membranes in various solvents and compare the solvent-driven and temperature-driven shape recovery response. The results show that the programming temperature and solvent type have a corresponding strong influence on the shape recovery behavior. Specifically, lower programming temperatures induce faster initial recovery rates and larger recovery, which is known as the temperature memory effect. The temperature memory effect can be used to achieve multi-staged and multiple shape recovery of specimens programmed at different temperatures. Different solvents can also induce different shape recovery, analogous to the temperature memory effect, and can also provide a mechanism for multi-staged and multiple shape memory recovery.

Abstract:Device applications of shape memory polymers demand diverse shape changing geometries, which are currently limited to non-omnidirectional movement. This restriction originates from traditional thermomechanical programming methods such as uniaxial, biaxial stretching, bending, or compression. A solvent-modulated programming method is reported to achieve an omnidirectional shape memory behavior. The method utilizes freeze drying of hydrogels of polyethylene glycol networks with a melting transition temperature around 50 °C in their dry state. Such a process creates temporarily fixed macroporosity, which collapses upon heating, leading to significant omnidirectional shrinkage. These shrunken materials can swell in water to form hydrogels again and the omnidirectional programming and recovery can be repeated. The fixity ratio (R f ) and recovery ratio (R r ) can be maintained at 90% and 98% respectively upon shape memory multicycling. The maximum linear recoverable strain, as limited by the maximum swelling, is ≈90%. Amongst various application potentials, one can envision the fabrication of multiphase composites by taking advantages of the omnidirectional shrinkage from a porous polymer to a denser structure.

Abstract:Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) based dual-stimuli responsive shape memory composites were fabricated via a feasible reactive melt mixing with certain content of polyethylene (PE) and crosslinker dicumyl peroxide (DCP). It is found that PE plays many important roles in this method. Firstly, the melting processability of PVA can be improved markedly by skillfully utilizing the excellent flowability and crosslinking heat of PE. Secondly, the PVA composites achieve excellent water/heat dual-induced shape memory property by utilizing PE as fixing domain and heat responsive switching domain and utilizing PVA as water responsive switching domain meanwhile. The fixing ratio is nearly 100% and recovery ratio can reach 90% for both water and heat responsive shape memory. This artful fabricating method achieved the aim of improving the melting processability of PVA and endowing the composites dual-responsive shape memory property simultaneously only by utilizing PE, which is interesting and promising for the development of PVA in the industry application. It shows considerable prospect for PVA composites and their industry application.

Abstract:The PVA/GO film prepared by vacuum-assisted self-assembly exhibits quick thermo-/water- responsive shape memory effect. The anisotropic lamellar structure of GO sheets and plenty of chemical groups containing oxygen in the PVA/GO film facilitate rapid recovery in water. The lamellar structure of GO sheets improves the recovery stress of composite and results in a 16-fold increase in Young’s modulus. PVA molecular chain slides along the direction of the laminated GO sheets, consistent with the extension direction, ensuring that the composite film maintains a large fracture strain. The straight film is programmed into a spiral shape by the plasticization of water on PVA instead of ordinary heating and the spiral film can drive a weight 160 times its own weight to rotate in water at room temperature (about 25[Formula: see text]C).

Abstract:This study introduces a novel approach to fabricating polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/curdlan (CURD) composite aerogels by employing the freeze-casting technique to achieve exceptional mechanical and thermal properties. Our research demonstrated that the formation of dual-network structure that combines the mechanical strength of PVA with the thermal stability of CURD. Scanning electron microscopy revealed a unique honeycomb-like cross-sectional morphology in the PVA/CURD aerogels. Notably, the PVA/CURD composite hydrogel demonstrated consistent compressive stress performance even after 50 compression cycles and exhibited minimal swelling (only 4 %) when immersed in distilled water for 24 h. Furthermore, the aerogels exhibited varying swelling ratios in different pH environments, with a significant increase observed in acidic conditions. Thermal analysis confirmed the enhanced thermal stability of the composite aerogels, attributed to the incorporation of CURD. These findings suggest that PVA/CURD composite aerogels have promising applications in fields that require materials with robust mechanical and thermal endurance.

Abstract:Therapeutic-ultrasound-triggered shape memory was demonstrated for the first time with a melamine-enhanced poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) physical hydrogel. The addition of a small amount of melamine (up to 1.5 wt %) in PVA results in a strong hydrogel due to the multiple H-bonding between the two constituents. A temporary shape of the hydrogel can be obtained by deformation of the hydrogel (∼65 wt % water) at room temperature, followed by fixation of the deformation by freezing/thawing the hydrogel under strain, which induces crystallization of PVA. We show that the ultrasound delivered by a commercially available device designed for the patient's pain relief could trigger the shape recovery process as a result of ultrasound-induced local heating in the hydrogel that melts the crystallized PVA cross-linking. This hydrogel is thus interesting for potential applications because it combines many desirable properties, being mechanically strong, biocompatible, and self-healable and displaying the shape memory capability triggered by a physiological stimulus.

Abstract:We have developed a novel type of flexible multi-stimuli-responsive shape memory composite system based on a melamine/polydopamine (PDA)/Fe3O4/phosphorene (PR) complex foam and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). The system was constructed through coating PDA on the skeleton of the melamine foam and then decorating the PDA layer with Fe3O4 and PR nanosheets, followed by vacuum impregnation of PEG. The resultant composites exhibit an intrinsic thermal-driven shape memory behavior with a high shape recovery ratio of around 100% thanks to their high latent heat capacity derived from the loaded PEG. The introduction of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles and PR nanosheets not only enhances the thermal conductance of the composites but also generates good magnetic and photothermal responsiveness. This enables the composites to obtain good light- and magnetic-driven shape memory capabilities in a shorter shape recovery period. This study offers a new strategy for developing smart materials with multiple and effective response to light, heat, and magnetism.

Abstract:<p>The preparation of polymeric materials with high performance and functional performance remains a focus of extensive research. In this paper, a good dispersion of regenerated chitosan (RCS) in the poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and a physical cross-linking network of molecular chain entanglements and hydrogen bonding were realized by unique co-precipitation to prepare composites. Dynamic mechanical analysis and tensile tests demonstrated that RCS achieved a significant increase in the mechanical properties. The storage modulus and tensile strength of composites containing 5% RCS were 5205 MPa and 105.7 MPa, which were significantly higher than the 3416 MPa and 60.2 MPa of the pure PVA. Intriguingly, the fabricated PVA/RCS composites exhibited good pH-sensitivity due to internal hydrogen bonding. Moreover, this achieved a tunable water-induced shape memory behavior at different pH environments. This study provides a promising strategy for the use of renewable polysaccharide to achieve high performance and functionality of polymer materials.</p>

Abstract:In this paper, a thermo-responsive shape memory effect in a polyvinyl chloride thermoset foam is characterized. Excellent shape recovery performance is observed in foam samples programmed both at room temperature and above their transition temperature. The conversion of porous structures in the foam from closed-cell to open-cell after a shape memory effect cycle is revealed via a series of specially designed oil-dripping experiments and optical images of the micro pores. Programming the strain higher than 20% results in an apparent increase in open-cell level, whereas programming temperatures have almost no influence.

Abstract:Water-resistant Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) materials integrated with excellent mechanical strength and simultaneously high thermal stability would be of great use in many fields, however their fabrication has been proven to be a big challenge. Here, the concept of supported crosslinker for PVA crosslinking was proposed and prepared by using halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) as supporter and reactive 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH560) grafted on HNTs surface as crosslinker during crosslinking reaction. The resultant PVA composites (c-PVA/HNTs-s-560) crosslinked with supported crosslinker (HNTs-s-560) shows high tensile strength (which is 20 % higher than PVA composites with physically blended HNTs-s-560 (PVA/HNTs-s-560) and 40 % higher than pure PVA) and excellent thermal stability (the maximum decomposition temperature is 21 °C higher than that of PVA/HNTs-s-560). Moreover, c-PVA/HNTs-s-560 has higher weight loss after soil burial tests for 90 days and higher a tensile strength (110 %) after immersion in water at room temperature for 15 days than that of PVA/HNTs-s-560, indicating the easy biodegradability and excellent water resistance of c-PVA/HNTs-s-560. The smart design of making mechanically strong and thermally stable inorganic nanofiller as building blocks of the crosslinked PVA network using a supported crosslinker is responsible for the excellent comprehensive performance of c-PVA/HNTs-s-560 and this work may open an avenue toward the development of PVA-based smart materials.

Abstract:Temperature response double network (DN) hydrogels comprising a network formed by polymerization of methacrylic acid (MA) modified PVA, N,N'-methylene bis(acrylamide), N-isopropylacryl amide (NIPAM), and one formed from crystalline polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) are prepared in a 3D printed tailor-made mold. The (PVA-MA)-g-PNIPAAm thermoset intermediate is formed in water by a radical, photo-initiated process, and in the presence of dissolved PVA polymers. A subsequent freezing-thawing sequence induces the crystallization of the PVA network, which forms a second network inside the thermoset NIPAM polymer. The prepared hydrogel is thermoresponsive by the phase transition of PNIPAAm segments (T ≈ 32 °C) and has good mechanical properties (tensile strength 1.23 MPa, compressive strength 1.47 MPa). Thermal cycling between room temperature at 40 or 50 °C shows the product converses from a virgin-state to a steady-state, which most likely involves the reorganization of PVA crystals. The swelling-deswelling cycles remain clear at a length change of about 13%.

Abstract:<p>Strong, stretchable, and durable biomaterials with shape memory properties can be useful in different biomedical devices, tissue engineering, and soft robotics. However, it is challenging to combine these features. Semi‐crystalline polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been used to make hydrogels by conventional methods such as freeze–thaw and chemical crosslinking, but it is formidable to produce strong materials with adjustable properties. Herein, a method to induce crystallinity and produce physically crosslinked PVA hydrogels via applying high‐concentration sodium hydroxide into dense PVA polymer is introduced. Such a strategy enables the production of physically crosslinked PVA biomaterial with high mechanical properties, low water content, resistance to injury, and shape memory properties. It is also found that the developed PVA hydrogel can recover 90% of plastic deformation due to extension upon supplying water, providing a strong contraction force sufficiently to lift objects 1100 times more than their weight. Cytocompatibility, antifouling property, hemocompatibility, and biocompatibility are also demonstrated in vitro and in vivo. The fabrication methods of PVA‐based catheters, injectable electronics, and microfluidic devices are demonstrated. This gelation approach enables both layer‐by‐layer and 3D printing fabrications.</p>

Abstract:Shape memory polymers, based on their unique property that they can automatically revert to their original shape after deformation when subjected to external stimuli, have shown great application prospects and practical value in many fields such as aerospace, automotive and biomedical in recent years. In this study, poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/polycaprolactone (PCL) is used as a substrate, and a graft product, PLA-g-GMA, is prepared by grafting glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) onto PLA as a compatibilizer, and then polymer substrates are prepared by melt extrusion. Then, light-responsive shape memory composites are prepared by loading polypyrrole (PPy) nanoparticles with photothermal conversion functionality into the PLA/PCL substrate, and PPy-coated NdFeB (PPy@NdFeB) is used as the functional phase to prepare auto-responsive shape memory polymers that can be programmed automatically. Among them, the PLA/PCL/PPy composites show shape recovery rate (R r ) and shape fixation rate (R f ) of 81.11% and 98.87%, respectively, at a strain of 85.27% under the programming conditions of a deformation temperature of 65 °C and a stress of 2.14 MPa. The PLA/PCL/PPy@NdFeB composite material, in addition to excellent double and triple shape memory behavior, also has obvious magnetic properties, which can be used to carry out self-programmed temporary shapes. This research aims to solve the limitations of temperature-responsive shape memory polymers in a single stimulus response mode, broaden their application scope, further promote the development of shape memory polymers, and provide realistic guidance for the field of 4D printing.

Synergistic water-driven shape memory performance and improving mechanism of grading photo-thermal curing shape memory composite

Abstract:Shape memory materials draw much attention due to various promising potential applications. This work prepares a novel shape memory composite via grading photo-thermal curing method, which has not yet been reported. Expectedly, it merges advantages of epoxy-based shape memory polymer (EP) and polyvinyl alcohol-based shape memory polymer (PVA), which has applicable stiffness and multi-stimuli responsive performance. The unsatisfactory mechanical properties of most water-driven shape memory polymer (SMP) is expected to be solved by this fabrication strategy, so that the application range of water-driven SMP could be further extended. The synergistic plasticization of PVA and EP dominates water-driven shape memory behavior of this composite. Interestingly, its water-driven shape memory performance is able to be further improved by immersed in HCl/EtOH solution. The glassy-to-rubbery modulus ratio (E′g/E′r ) of the PVA/EP-HCl/EtOH is about 650 after immersed in 0.1 mol/L HCl/EtOH for 6 h. In addition, this immersed method also can solve the post curing problem of such cationic photocuring. It is an easy, efficient, economical strategy for improving synergistic water-driven shape memory performance. Furthermore, this shape memory composite is expected to provide new perspective and practical approach to realize the intellectualization of underwater deployment and release structure.

Abstract:Thermo-responsive shape memory polymers which are a class of important smart materials can recover permanent shape from temporary shape by simple thermal stimulus, but most of the polymers lack of biodegradability and biocompatibility. Poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) is a green degradable thermoplastic, however, only limited studies involve controlling its shape change. In the work, a new x-shaped copolymer with defined architecture has been devised by using tetramethyltetravinylcyclotetrasiloxane (D-4(vi)) as centronucleus and polytetrahydrofuran-co-poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PTMG-co-PCL) as branch to achieve PLLA shape memory. When the weight ratio of DAPP and PLLA is 50/50, the composite exhibits good thermo-responsive shape memory capacity because a balance between T-m of the x-shaped polymer rand T-g of PLLA is kept. The shape fixation ratio is 84% at 15 degrees C, and the recovery ratio 94% at 55 degrees C. And the shape memory capability does not change evidently after the reversible spiral transition is repeated for 30 times. At the same time, the composite shows great flexibility. So the obtained composite is promising for medical and bionic devices, self-healing systems, self-assembly structures.
Tunable Properties of Exfoliated Polyvinylalcohol Nanocomposites by in Situ Coprecipitation of Layered Double Hydroxides

Abstract:Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanocomposites were prepared by a “one step” method based on the coprecipitation of layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets in the polymer aqueous solution. The morphology, fire resistance properties, mechanical and optical properties of the PVA/LDH nanocomposites were studied. The LDH nanosheets were homogeneously dispersed in the PVA matrix as indicated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterization. Meanwhile, the peak of heat release rate (pHRR) and total heat release (THR) were decreased by 58% and 28%, respectively. Storage modulus at 30 °C was increased, and the transmittance of more than 90% at the visible region was obtained upon addition of 5 wt% LDH.

Abstract:In this work, shape-stabilized solid-solid phase change materials (PCMs) were fabricated by simply electrospinning polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Owing to the strong hydrogen bonds and entanglement between those molecular chains of PEG and PVA, PEG was packaged by PVA. The morphological structures, thermal stability and thermal energy storage properties of those fibers were investigated. SEM results showed that those electrospun PVA/PEG composite membranes hold a three-dimensional nonwoven web structure even the content of PEG as high as 70%. The thermal energy storage ability of those composite fibers increased with the increase of the content of PEG. The heat enthalpies of PEG/PVA = 7/3 were as high as 78.806 J/g. Moreover, those composite fibers had excellent thermal stability. After 100 heating and cooling cycles, there was almost no obvious change in the melting enthalpy and crystallization enthalpy. Those fibers still maintained good thermal regulation. The simple preparation process, low cost of raw materials and excellent stability endow the PCMs great utilization potentiality in smart textile and energy storage systems.

Abstract:In this study, we successfully prepared poly (vinyl alcohol)/chitosan/sodium alginate blended (PCS/SA) composite membranes by a simple solution casting method and solvent evaporation technique. The physicochemical properties and effect of different wt% of sodium alginate (SA) on poly (vinyl alcohol)/chitosan (PCS) membranes were systematically evaluated and studied along with its shape memory properties and mechanism. With increased wt% of SA, the crystallinity of PCS/SA membranes reduced significantly. PCS/SA membrane has better thermal stability than pure PVA membrane but is slightly lower than PCS membrane and decreased with higher SA contents. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) study revealed that water act as a stimulus for the shape recovery behavior. The mechanical study showed that PCS membranes with a small amount of SA (0.1 and 0.2 wt%) have a much better elongation at break than other membranes. The swelling ratio, gel contents, and contact angle results concurred with the results of shape memory effect (SME) of all membranes, where the PCS with higher contents of SA possess better and faster shape recovery speed.
