Abstract:High activity and productivity of MoVNbTeOx catalyst are challenging tasks in oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane (ODHE) for industrial application. In this work, phase-pure M1 with 30 wt% CeO2 composite catalyst was treated by oxygen plasma to further enhance catalyst performance. The results show that the oxygen vacancies generated by the solid-state redox reaction between M1 and CeO2 capture active oxygen species in gas and transform V4+ to V5+ without damage to M1 structure. The space-time yield of ethylene of the plasma-treated catalyst was significantly increased, in which the catalyst shows an enhancement near ∼100% than that of phase-pure M1 at 400 °C for ODHE process. Plasma treatment for catalysts demonstrates an effective way to convert electrical energy into chemical energy in catalyst materials. Energy conversion is achieved by using the catalyst as a medium.

Abstract:This work presented a comprehensive study on structure sensitivity of phase-pure M1 catalyst in oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane (ODHE). We proposed an effective method to modulate the morphology of phase-pure M1 catalysts by oxalic acid treatment. The proposed approach significantly promoted the catalyst surface area by restraining the anisotropic growth of the basal (0 0 1) plane of the M1-phase in calcination and decreased the diameter of M1 needles. Experimental results showed that phase-pure M1 catalyst treated with 1.0 mmol/L, oxalic acid solution exhibited remarkably promoted catalyst performance of 73% ethane conversion, 85% ethylene selectivity and 0.77 k (C2H4)/kg(cat)/h catalyst productivity at 400 degrees C. The serial catalyst tests also demonstrated the structure sensitivity of M1 phase in the ODHE reaction. Active sites were located on the lateral faces as well as the basal plane of the M1 needles, but different effects on the catalyst selectivity were observed. The phase-pure M1 catalyst with a lower aspect ratio was suggested to provide better ethylene selectivity in ODHE process. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:M1 phase of MoVNbTe oxide catalyst is a promising catalyst for oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane (ODHE) process. Raising V5+ concentration in the catalyst is an effective way to improve the catalytic performance while thermal oxidation in air has limited effect on the increase of vanadium valence state. In this work, manganese is introduced into the catalyst system, acting as oxygen facilitator, making M1 oxidized by gas phase oxygen at lower temperature during the preparation process. The influence of manganese addition amount and combination method on catalyst activity is studied. BET, XPS, SEM, TEM, ICP, TPR, and TPD characterizations are performed to study the correlation between catalyst properties and catalytic performance. Corresponding to the valence state increment, the catalyst promoted by MnOx gives an improved catalytic performance, e.g., over 20% improvement in ODHE process at 400 degrees C based on the ethane conversion. Determination of Highly Active and Selective Surface for the Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Ethane over Phase-Pure M1 Movnbteox Catalyst

Abstract:The original phase-pure M1 MoVNbTeOx catalyst was mechanically treated with stirring water for several days under ambient conditions to obtain particles with different sizes. The catalytic performance was sig-nificantly improved and stabilized after about 7 days of treatment. Among all the catalysts, the sample treated in water for 7 days can obtain 57.6 % ethane conversion and 0.79 kgC2H4/kgcat/h ethylene produc-tivity while the original phase-pure M1 catalyst was only 19.2 % and 0.27 kgC2H4/kgcat/h at reaction tem-perature of 400 degrees C and contact time of 18.5 gcat center dot h/molC2H6. Meanwhile, the catalyst was systematically characterized and the results showed that there was essentially no difference in microstructure between the original and treated catalysts. TEM and SEM morphological characterizations presented that the par-ticle size and aspect ratio of the catalysts changed significantly, in which the particle size of the catalyst become smaller and the proportion of basal surface was enhanced. The activity and selectivity of the cat-alysts exhibited a correlation with the amount and proportion of basal surface. It can be deducted that the basal surface is the most active and selective surface during oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane (ODHE) process, and the intrinsic activity based on the basal (001) plane of the catalyst remains stable after the mechanical treatment. Samples treated in water for 7 days showed excellent long-term stability in a 200 h stability test at reaction temperature of 440 degrees C and contact time of 9.3 gcat center dot h/molC2H6. The present work demonstrated that the differences in the catalytic properties of different M1 samples depend mainly on the amount and proportion of exposed basal surface, and the possibility of enhancing the activ-ity of orthorhombic M1 phase by fragmentation method.(c) 2022 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:The surface ab planes of the M1 phase exposed selectively after atomic layer deposition (ALD) of alumina followed by crushing showed significantly improved selectivity to acrylonitrile during propane ammoxiclation. The results demonstrated the importance of surface ab planes for the activity and selectivity of the M1 phase in propane ammoxiclation and general utility of surface modification by ALD in studies of catalytic behavior of surface planes in layered mixed metal oxides.

Abstract:The catalytic performance of the non-purified MoVNbTeOx catalyst was optimized by changing the composition of the synthesis gel method in the hydrothermal synthesis process. However, the enhancement in activity was more pronounced for the post-treatment process of the non-purified catalyst. The catalytic performance of non -purified MoVNbTeOx catalysts and phase-pure M1 catalysts in the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane (ODHE) were enhanced by water agitation post-treatment. The results showed that the phase-pure M1 catalyst obtained by treating the MoVNbTeOx catalyst with nitric acid had an increased activity per unit mass, but with a mass loss of catalyst materials during the purification process. After several days of post-treatment with water agitation, the catalytic activity of the non-purified MoVNbTeOx and the M1 samples gradually increased and stabilized, where both catalysts had a comparable catalytic performance. All the samples were systematically characterized, showing that the catalytic performance of the samples was mainly correlated with the enhanced specific surface area/pore volume. The results show that for the hydrothermally synthesized MoVNbTeOx catalysts, the reaction takes place in the micropores and the key to improve the performance of MoVNbTeOx catalysts is to effectively expose the active sites. Physical post-treatment process that does not require nitric acid or hydrogen peroxide for purification is also effective in enhancing catalyst activity by boosting the active site.

Abstract:The M1 phase of MoVNbTeOx mixed metal oxide is one of the most attractive catalysts for the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane (ODHE). This work presents the performance of pure-phase M1/CeO2 nanocomposite catalysts in the ODHE process. Nanosized CeO2 is successfully added to pure-phase M1 catalysts by physical mixing and by a sal-gel method, so that M1/CeO2 nanocomposites with different CeO2 particle sizes are formed. The experimental results show that the introduction of CeO2 can increase the abundance of V5+ on the catalyst surface by a self-redox solid-state reaction during activation at 400 degrees C in air. Improvement of catalyst performance can be observed with the decrease of CeO2 dimensions. The nanocomposite catalyst consisting of M1 particles and 4.4 nm CeO2 exhibits the best catalyst productivity of 0.66 kg(c2H4)/kg(cat) h with 20% lower cost than for pure-phase M1 catalysts at 400 degrees C. It is anticipated that a high-throughput and low-cost ODHE process could be realized on M1/CeO2 nanocomposites. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The introduction of cerium oxide to phase-pure M1 MoVNbTeo(x) with CeO2 loading from 0 up to 90 wt.% results in highly active catalysts for oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane (ODHE). These catalysts are characterized with BET, ICP, XRD, TEM, SEM and XPS techniques and tested for ODHE process. The results show that the increase of active site, V5+, is one of the dominant factors to improve the ethane conversion. In addition, the easier re-oxidation of V4+ to V5+ due to the presence of Ce4+ makes an extra contribution to the increase of turn-over frequency. Among all the catalysts, M1 catalyst with 30 wt.% CeO2 loading obtains the best productivity of 0.69 kg(C2H4/)kg(cat).h while the corresponding performance of phase-pure M1 catalyst is 0.34 kg(C2H4)/kg(cat).h at 400 degrees C with the contact time of 18.52 g(cat).h/mol(C2H6). It is further demonstrated that M1/CeO2 catalyst (e.g., with 50 wt.% CeO2 as a representative) loading remains highly active after 3 cycles of refreshment in situ, and its crystal structure and surface morphology keep stable compared to the fresh catalyst. Identification of the Intrinsic Active Site in Phase-Pure M1 Catalysts for Oxidation Dehydrogenation of Ethane by Density Functional Theory Calculations

Abstract:Heterogeneous catalysts for alkane conversion reactions are required to possess both high activity for C-H bond cleavage and selectivity to target products. This work employed an atomic substitution strategy to investigate the active site of the phase-pure M1 MoVNbTeOx catalyst for the oxidation dehydrogenation of ethane (ODHE) reaction. Density of states and crystal orbital Hamilton population (COHP) based on density functional theory calculations indicated that the transition metal- O (M-O) bonds were weakened after H adsorption. Both integrated COHP and Bader charge were useful descriptors to correlate the electronic structure with catalytic performance. The results showed that the content of V in phase-pure M1 catalysts had a linear relationship with ethane conversion. Synergetic interactions between Te-O and V-O sites were accordingly considered as the intrinsic active sites for the ODHE reaction.
Effect of Discharge Atmosphere on Structure and Performance of Composite Metal Oxides Catalysts

Abstract:The manganese-cerium composite oxides catalysts were prepared with the pretreatment of plasma. The effects of the discharge atmosphere of the plasma, including N2, Ar, and air, on the structure and performance of manganese-cerium oxides were investigated. The physical and chemical properties of the samples were characterized by means of the BET surface area, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectra and H2-temperature programmed reduction analysis. Plasma pretreatment can improve the catalytic oxidation performance of the catalyst. The catalyst pretreated by air plasma displays the highest catalytic activity, whose NO oxidation efficiency is about 75% at 275℃, which is 20% higher than the catalyst prepared by the traditional method. Plasma pretreatment can improve oxygen mobility and oxidation-reduction ability at low temperatures. According to the characterization of the catalysts, the improvement of the redox ability and catalytic activity is attributed to the enhancement of the formation of solid solution structure between MnOx and CeO2 with plasma pretreatment, leading to an increase of specific surface area, the ratio of Ce3+ at catalyst surface and the amount of surface active oxygen, which result in the improvement of the redox ability and catalytic activity.

Abstract:Compared with that of the transition metal mixed oxide pellet catalyst, the catalytic activity of the supported mixed oxide catalyst was significantly reduced, which was limited in practical industrial applications. In this work, supported Cu-Mn-Ce mixed oxide catalysts were prepared by non-thermal plasma. Catalyst characterization result demonstrated that plasma treatment could promote the proportion of oxygen vacancy and enhance the adsorptive strength of VOCs on the surface of catalyst. Meanwhile, plasma treatment process exerted a slight influence on the pore structure and morphological property of the catalyst. Consequently, CMC/SiO2–P exhibited much higher catalytic activity than CMC/SiO2 prepared by the incipient wetness impregnation method for the catalytic oxidation of toluene and n-hexane. Among the catalysts prepared, the 15%CMC/SiO2–P catalyst even exhibited a high catalytic activity comparable to that of the supported noble metal catalyst for the oxidation of the inert hexane. The T98 of toluene and n-hexane over 15%CMC/SiO2–P was 260 and 280°C under the conditions of VOC concentration at 1000 ppm and WHSV at 20,000 mL·g−1·h−1, respectively. This work provided a novel method for the preparation of the supported transition metal mixed oxide catalyst.

Abstract:Composite catalysts of mixed metal oxides were prepared by mixing a phase-pure M1 MoVNbTeOx with anatase-phase TiO2. Two methods were used to prepare the composite catalysts (the simple physically mixed or sol-gel method) for the improvement of the catalytic performance in the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane (ODHE) process. The results showed that TiO2 particles with a smaller particle size were well dispersed on the M1 surface for the sol-gel method, which presented an excellent activity for ODHE. At the same operating condition (i.e., the contact time of 7.55 gcat·h/molC2H6 and the reaction temperature of 400 °C), the M1-TiO2-SM and M1-TiO2-PM achieved the space time yields of 0.67 and 0.52 kgC2H4/kgcat/h, respectively, which were about ~76% and ~35% more than that of M1 catalyst (0.38 kgC2H4/kgcat/h), respectively. The BET, ICP, XRD, TEM, SEM, H2-TPR, C2H6-TPSR, and XPS techniques were applied to characterize the catalysts. It was noted that the introduction of TiO2 raised the V5+ abundance on the catalyst surface as well as the reactivity of active oxygen species, which made contribution to the promotion of the catalytic performance. The surface morphology and crystal structure of used catalysts of either M1-TiO2-SM or M1-TiO2-PM remained stable as each fresh catalyst after 24 h time-on-stream tests.
Improved Metal-Support Interaction in Ru/CeO2 Catalyst Via Plasma-Treated Strategy for Dichloroethane Oxidation

Abstract:Plasma-treatment strategy has become an important technique to modify heterogenous catalyst. Here, the plasma-treated Ru/CeO2 catalysts were synthesized and applied to dichloroethane (DCE) oxidation. Compared with the untreated catalysts (CeO2-T and Ru/CeO2-T), the plasma-treated catalysts (CeO2-P, Ru/CeO2-P and Ru/ CeO2-TP) show higher catalytic activity. Amongst, the Ru/CeO2-P catalyst shows the highest activity (T90 =243 degrees C, TOFSSA=6.98 & mu;mol & BULL;m- 2 & BULL;h-1 and Ea=26 kJ & BULL;mol- 1). Based on various characterizations, it reveals that the plasma-treatment can enrich the concentration of surface oxygen vacancies, promote the formation of acid sites, and strengthen the interaction between Ru and CeO2 support. The interaction benefits the dispersion of Ru species, forming more active sites to enhance the DCE conversion. The more acid sites can improve the HCl selectivity. Moreover, the Ru/CeO2-P catalyst exhibits excellent thermal stability and water-resistance performance. This signification result promotes the development of catalysts by plasma-treated strategy, and its wide application in heterogenous catalysis.
Enhanced oxygen reduction activity of α-MnO2 by NH3 plasma treatment

Abstract:Oxygen vacancies and heteroatom doping play important role in oxygen reduction activity of metal oxides. Developing efficient modification method is one of the key issues in catalysts research. Room temperature plasma treatment, with the advantages of mild working conditions, no emissions and high efficiency, is a new catalyst modification method developed in recent years. In this work, hydrothermal synthesized α-MnO2 nanorods are treated in NH3 plasma at room temperature. In the reducing atmosphere, oxygen vacancies and N doping are achieved simultaneously on the surface. The NH3 plasma etched MnO2 demonstrate a significant enhanced oxygen reduction activity with half-wave potential of 0.84 V, limiting current density of 6.32 mA cm-2 and transferred electrons number of 3.9. The Mg-air battery with N-MnO2 display a maximum power density of 76.3 mW cm-2 as well as stable discharge performance. This work provides new ideas for preparing efficient and cost-effective method to boost the catalysts activity.

Optimizing the CeO2-MnO2 Interface Via H2O2 Etching for Surface Lattice Oxygen Activation in the Plasma Catalytic Degradation of Trimethylamine

Abstract:Trimethylamine (TMA) is a nitrogen-containing malodorous gas that is toxic and hazardous to humans. Plasma catalysis is a promising technique for removing low-concentration malodorous gases. CeO2/MnO2 nanowires with different Ce-Mn contact interfaces prepared by impregnation, physical mixing, and H2O2 etching were investigated for TMA degradation in a plasma catalytic system. The CMO-H sample prepared by H2O2 etching achieved a removal efficiency of 100% at 98 J/L, demonstrating the highest activity. Characterization revealed that H2O2 etching led to the uniform formation of CeO2 nanoparticles on MnO2, promoting the transfer of electrons between Ce and Mn species. Surface lattice oxygen and high-valent manganese were confirmed to be the main active species, consistent with the Mars van Krevelen mechanism. Density functional theory calculations confirmed that the CMO-H sample exhibited the lowest oxygen vacancy formation energy. In situ plasma diffuse reflection infrared transform spectroscopy analysis and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry results showed the possible degradation pathway of TMA. In summary, the H2O2 etching process optimized CeO2-MnO2 interactions and improved the utilization of lattice oxygen active sites, enhancing the catalytic degradation of TMA and providing new insights into the design of an efficient plasma catalytic system for environmental remediation.

Abstract:Plasma-catalysis is a highly promising renewable-energy-based solution for decarbonization of industrial and environmental catalysis. However, urgent insights how to develop plasma-specific catalysts and synergize with the unique plasma effects are vitally needed for CO2/CH4 utilization. Herein we provide guiding principles for catalysts design enabling discriminative production of liquid oxygenates. Comprehensive tests revealed that metallic Co was critical to enhance the CH3COOH generation, while oxygen vacancies (Ov) contributed to the formation of CH3OH. The gaseous and interfacial simulations verified the strong chemisorption of CO2 and key O-containing radicals (O, OH, COOH) on Ov, thereby shifting the reaction from high-barrier surface to the gas phase via the barrierless Eley-Rideal mechanism. The specifically Ov-assisted pathways for R-COOH/R-OH generation over the custom-designed Co-MgAlO-Ov multiphase structures are proposed. This study confirms that the microstructure design can modulate the radical adsorption and kinetic factors of the plasma-induced interfacial catalysis leading towards the plasma-electrified energy conversion.

Abstract:The phase-pure M1 of MoVNbTeOx has been demonstrated as a highly active catalyst for oxidative dehy-drogenation of ethane (ODHE) reaction. However, the MoVNbTeOx without further purification shows poor catalytic performance so that the M2 phase has to be removed from the bulk material to approach the high purity of M1 phase. This work presents new discovery that the nanocomposite catalyst by add-ing CeO2 to the MoVNbTeOx using sol-gel method can effectively promote its catalytic performance. As a comparison, the sample combining TiO2 and MoVNbTeOx is also prepared which presents limited influ-ence. The characterization results show that the enhanced catalyst performance can be attributed to the increased active species at the catalyst surface due to the addition of CeO2. This work would provide a new solution to greatly simplify the preparation procedure of MoVNbTeOx catalysts for the ODHE process and avoid the mass loss during the purification procedure. Influence of the Content and Distribution of Vanadium in the M1 Phase of the MoVTe(Sb)NbO Catalysts on their Catalytic Properties in Light Alkanes Oxidation

Abstract:Phase-pure MoVTe(Sb)NbO mixed oxides, with an M1 structure, and various compositions were prepared, characterized and tested as catalysts for the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane, in order to study the influence of vanadium content and its distribution over the crystallographic sites on the catalytic properties of these oxides. A linear variation in catalytic activity was observed, as a function of the total vanadium content. This property, which has already been demonstrated for propane oxidation, is shown to remain unaffected by the alkane reaction, the nature of the propene α-dehydrogenation elements (Te or Sb), the presence or absence of niobium. The use of XPS to study the surface composition of the catalysts allowed a direct proportionality to be established between the rate of ethane conversion and the V5+ surface content, thus explaining the first correlation observed with bulk V content. This result also emphasizes the fact that a maximum level of intrinsic catalytic activity can be found, and that high vanadium content might be detrimental to this activity, or to the stability of the catalysts. Finally, crystallographic data found in the literature are used to further interpret and discuss these results.
