Abstract:A compact methane (CH4) detection system is presented and developed by using an alumina ceramic scattering material as its gas cell. Due to the material's high scattering performance, the optical path length of the gas cell at 1653.7 nm can reach 15.96 cm although its physical length along the light transmission direction is only 0.50 cm. The wavelength modulation spectroscopy technique is employed to enhance the detection sensitivity, and the second harmonic gas absorption signal with low noise is detected and processed. The long-term stability of the system is investigated by the Allan deviation analysis method. Detection limits of 4.5 and 2.6 ppm are achieved at averaging times of 20 s and 200 s, respectively. The dynamic gas exchange performance is also experimentally studied. The experimental results indicate that our system is a good choice for practical applications owing to its small volume, high sensitivity, and stability. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A portable quantitative detector is designed for methane gas with thermal catalytic sensor.The detector based on MSP430 consists of analog signal regulation,human-machine interface,data storage and communication module.It can detect the gas concentration conveniently and in real time,and be configured by the buttons.The result can be displayed by LED and be saved in EEPROM at the same time.The result also can be transmitted to PC via UART for data storage and management.The detector has the functions of sound and light alarm,voltage monitoring,real-time display with the features of small size,high sensibility,quick response and portable,it can be used for multi-gas measurement by adjusting some data.

Abstract:As an important means of trace gas detection, photoacoustic spectroscopy mainly detects gas concentration indirectly through the thermal effect of light. Methane detection system based on photoacoustic spectrum has great application prospect in environmental pollution detection and industrial production. As a container for loading methane, the shape and quality of the photoacoustic cell will have a huge impact on the final detection results. To improve the operability of the photoacoustic spectrum technology in practical application, this system improves the traditional photoacoustic cell. The integrated micro photoacoustic cell designed with 3D printing technology has a volume of 9 cm3 and a theoretical resonance frequency of 11 000 Hz. Based on LabVIEW platform, a frequency sweep program and a concentration acquisition program were set up in the experiment. The frequency sweep experiment was carried out in an environment filled with methane in the photoacoustic cell. Based on the theoretical knowledge of photoacoustic spectroscopy, it can be known that the sound pressure detected by microphones is proportional to the concentration of methane in the photoacoustic cell. Methane with gradient concentration is passed into the photoacoustic cell for concentration calibration experiment, and the second harmonic peak detected at different concentrations is linearly fitted, and the line R2 = 0.99919. By calculating Allan variance, it can be obtained that the minimum detection of the system can reach 6.89 ppm when the integration time is 49 s.

Abstract:Methane (CH4) and ethane (C2H6) dual gas sensor with low system complexity and strong stability is proposed. The correction method based on absorbance spectrum is applied, and the cross-interference of C2H6 to CH4 is eliminated. In the single gas concentration measurement, linear fitting is performed between the absorbance and concentration of CH4 and C2H6, and the correlation coefficients of R2 = 0.99959 and R2 = 0.99994 are obtained respectively, which proves that the accuracy of the dual gas sensor is robust. In the dual gas concentration measurement, we carry out continuous measurement of five mixed gases and a long-term measurement of a mixture of gases, which verifies that our sensor has the fast response speed and strong stability. The minimum detectable column densities of 0.62 ppm·m for CH4 and 0.1 ppm·m for C2H6 are achieved, respectively. The CH4/C2H6 dual gas sensor assisted by the correction method has high sensitivity and strong robustness to cross-interference, and has great potential for application in various scenarios.

Abstract:We designed a methane/ethane (CH4/C2H6) dual-gas sensor on the basis of direct absorption spectroscopy (DAS) technology and explored the potential for low power consumption and miniaturization of the detection system using the effective optical range is only 25 cm for absorption cell and an uncooled photodetector. The problem of baseline drift introduced by uncooled photodetectors has been improved by using of a fitting neural network approach, and absorbance spectrum denoising has been realized. We established the mathematical relationship between absorbance and concentration for each gas of CH4/C2H6 through experimental detection, which shows strong linearity. And the correlation coefficients (R2) reached 0.99995 and 0.99998, demonstrating the robustness of the sensor. Through 3 h of measured and evaluated system, we obtained the minimum detectable column densities of 0.588 ppm⋅m and 0.128 ppm⋅m for CH4 and C2H6, respectively, which proved that the sensor has high sensitivity, strong stability, and has broad application prospects.

Abstract:A novel method for detecting methane gas concentration distribution is proposed, based on the characteristics of supported catalytic sensors (SCS) and optical fibers. The feasibility, performance, and applications prospects of this system are also discussed. After analyzing the operating procedure of SCS theoretically, the linear relationship between methane concentration and its working temperature was established. The response of temperature to the methane concentration change is time-dependent. In optical fibers, the Rayleigh backscatter coefficient depends upon the structure of the core material and is time dependent. This fact has been used to measure the temperature distribution along the fiber. Putting a series of sensors along the fiber, the working temperature and locations of these sensors and the methane concentration distribution along the fiber is obtained.

Abstract:Methane is an important raw material for various petrochemicals in industrial fields and as also a clean fuel in daily life. However, as an inflammable and explosive material, methane leak can lead to disastrous consequences such as fire and explosion. Furthermore, as a kind of greenhouse gas, methane has stronger influence on global warming than carbon dioxide. In this paper, we present a new high sensitive scheme for methane remote sensing, which can facilitate detection and location of methane leakage. And the 2v(3) band (near 1653.7 nm) of methane is chosen as the target transition which is free from the absorption of the other molecule in atmosphere. A tunable distributed-feedback diode laser is adapted to scan across the target transition. A Fresnel lens with a diameter of 150 mm is employed to collect the ambient backscattering light from natural features such as the buildings. The first harmonic signal is used to normalize the second harmonic signal to remove the influence introduced by the unknown reflectance factor of the actual target, therefore no retro-reflector is needed. Traditional tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) method has difficulty in locating the second harmonic signal peak position in low concentration conditions because of low signal-noise-ratio (SNR). To improve the SNR especially in low concentration environment, a scheme named "baseline-offset" TDLAS is presented in the paper, in which a reference cell filled with standard methane sample is inserted into the measuring optical path. The reference cell can also be used to calibrate the sensor. Furthermore, the reference cell can be used to lock the central frequency of the diode laser to the absorption peak position to monitor concentration fluctuation continuously. In the peak-locking mode, the sensor demodulates the third harmonic signal as error signal to control the injection current of the laser source with PID control. Moreover, one advantage of peak-locking mode is that the measurement frequency is about two orders of magnitude higher than the traditional TDLAS method. With "baseline-offset" TDLAS, the remote sensor described in this paper obtains SNRs as high as 19 and 16 at a stand-off distance of 10 m and 20 m, respectively. With such a high SNR, there is no necessity for complex algorithm in absorption peak position location. By defining the standard deviation of the measuring concentration as the detection limit, experimental results show that the proposed methane remote sensor has detection limits of 5 ppm.m at a distance of 10 m and 16 ppm.m for 20 m, respectively, while measuring the ambient methane. In peak-locked mode, the experimental system has a detection limit of 22 ppm.m at a distance up to 37 m and can monitor rapid concentration fluctuation in.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, a reflective methane (CH 4 ) gas telemetry system has been developed based on the direct optical absorption spectroscopy technique for an open light path. It can realize the real-time in-situ monitoring of CH 4 gas within a range of 150 m. Considering the potential cross-interference effects of hydrocarbon gases in ambient air, a diode laser operating at a specific wavelength of 1653.7 nm is employed to target the strong CH 4 absorption line in near-infrared region and therefore avoid the interference of water vapor absorption simultaneously. A measurement precision of 0.02 ppm within 40 m open optical path has been achieved over 30 h of continuous monitoring, indicating the excellent measuring sensitivity and stability of our telemetry system. Through the field test of leaked CH 4 gas with a 150 m one-way open optical path, the developed CH 4 telemetry system has proved to have great potential and reliability for environmental monitoring and remote gas detection in various industries.

Abstract:Methane (CH 4 ) is a greenhouse gas as well as being flammable and explosive. In this manuscript, quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) and heterodyne QEPAS (H-QEPAS) exploring a self-designed quartz tuning fork (QTF) with resonance frequency ( f 0 ) of ~8.7 kHz was utilized to achieve sensitive CH 4 detection. Compared with the standard commercial 32.768 kHz QTF, this self-designed QTF with a low f 0 and large prong gap has the merits of large energy accumulation time and low optical noise. The strongest line located at 6057.08 cm −1 in the 2 v 3 overtone band of CH 4 was chosen as the target absorption line. A diode laser with a high output power of > 30 mW was utilized as the excitation source. Acoustic micro-resonators (AmRs) were added to the sensor architecture to amplify the intensity of acoustic waves. Compared to the bare QTF, after the addition of AmRs, a signal enhancement of 149-fold and 165-fold were obtained for QEPAS and H-QEPAS systems, respectively. The corresponding minimum detection limits (MDLs) were 711 ppb and 1.06 ppm for QEPAS and H-QEPAS sensors. Furthermore, based on Allan variance analysis the MDLs can be improved to 19 ppb and 27 ppb correspondingly. Compared to the QEPAS sensor, the H-QEPAS sensor shows significantly shorter measurement timeframes, allowing for measuring the gas concentration quickly while simultaneously obtaining f 0 of QTF.

Abstract:Monitoring methane(CH4)gas concentration is very important in mines and tunnels.This paper proposes a method of CH4 gas concentration detection based on the principle of absorption spectrum,taking Mid-infrared light emitting diode(Mid-IR LED)as the light source.The method adopts 5.8 kHz AC constant current source to excite the infrared light emitting diode,The middle infrared light generated by the middle infrared light emitting diode is absorbed by methane in the air chamber,and is irradiated on the middle infrared photoelectric diode,Due to the extremely weak of light current generated by photodiode,it must be preamplifier by high gain amplifier.The center frequency of the amplifier is 5.8 kHz,and the bandwidth is 0.5 kHz.In order to eliminate the noise,improve the sensitivity of methane detection,we designed lock-in amplifier circuit to amplify the voltage associated with the gas concentration,the lock-in amplifier bandwidth is set to 10 Hz,which can satisfy with the change of gas concentration effectively.Finally,The data acquisition system,which is composed of a single chip microprocessor,is used to make the data of the detection result,The data is processed,the nonlinear error of the detection system is corrected,and the gas concentration detection results are displayed.Moreover,the verification system based on this method was built,by using low cost Mid-IR LED devices and weak signal detection technology.The experiment displays that the proposed method has the advantages of short detection time,simple operation,high accuracy and strong adaptability to the environment,being a feasible measurement one.
Experimental Study on Enhanced Methane Detection Using an MEMS-Pyroelectric Sensor Integrated with a Wavelet Algorithm

Abstract:An optical sensing approach that balances portability with cost efficiency has been designed for the reliable monitoring of fugitive methane (CH4) emissions. Employing a LiTaO3-based pyroelectric detector integrated with micro-electro-mechanical systems and a broad infrared source, the developed gas sensor adeptly measured CH4 concentrations with a low limit of detection of about 5.6 ppmv and showed rapid response times with t90 consistently under 3 s. Notably, the novelty of our method lies in its precise control and reduction of CH4 levels, enhanced by wavelet denoising. This technique, optimized through meticulous grid search, effectively mitigated noise interference noticeable at CH4 levels below 10 ppmv. Postdenoising, nonlinear regression analyses based on the modified Beer-Lambert equation returned R2 values of 0.985 and 0.982 for the training and validation sets, respectively. In conclusion, this gas sensor has been shown to be able to meet the requirements for early warning of CH4 leakage on the surface in various carbon capture, utilization, and storage projects such as enhanced oil or gas recovery projects using CO2 injection.

Abstract:Here we present a high-sensitivity, rapid, and low-cost method for methane sensing based on a nonlinear interferometer. This method utilizes signal photons generated by stimulated parametric down-conversion (ST-PDC), enabling the use of a silicon detector to capture high-precision methane absorption spectra in the mid-infrared region. By controlling the system loss, we achieve more significant changes in visibility, thereby increasing sensitivity. The methane concentration within a gas cell is determined accurately. In addition, ST-PDC enables long-distance sensing and the capability to measure low ambient methane concentrations in the real world. A low-cost CMOS camera is employed to capture spatial interference fringes, ensuring fast and efficient detection.

Abstract:A long-wave infrared (LWIR) on-chip gas sensor based on subwavelength grating waveguide is proposed. By optimizing the grating structural parameters, the corresponding slow-light region is overlapped with the absorption spectrum of methane, which can greatly improve the light-gas interaction to achieve excellent sensing performance. The presented waveguide gas sensor is designed to operate at the wavelength of 7.70 mu m, which corresponds to the methane absorption peak in the LWIR and exhibits a high slow-light enhancement factor of 7.514. Abstract:Raman spectroscopy with the advantages of the in situ and simultaneous detection of multi-components has been widely used in the identification and quantitative detection of gas. As a type of scattering spectroscopy, the detection sensitivity of Raman spectroscopy is relatively lower, mainly due to the low signal collection efficiency. This paper presents the design and assembly of a multi-channel cavity-enhanced Raman spectroscopy system, optimizing the structure of the sample pool to reduce the loss of the laser and increase the excitation intensity of the Raman signals. Moreover, three channels are used to collect Raman signals to increase the signal collection efficiency for improving the detection sensitivity. The results showed that the limits of detection for the CH4, H2, CO2, O2, and N2 gases were calculated to be 3.1, 34.9, 17.9, 27, and 35.2 ppm, respectively. The established calibration curves showed that the correlation coefficients were all greater than 0.999, indicating an excellent linear correlation and high level of reliability. Meanwhile, under long-time integration detection, the Raman signals of CH4, H2, and CO2 could be clearly distinguished at the concentrations of 10, 10, and 50 ppm, respectively. The results indicated that the designed Raman system possesses broad application prospects in complex field environments.
Measurement of Methane Gas with High Absorbance Based on Modified Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopy

Abstract:In this paper, the wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) technique is modified and used for measuring methane with large absorbance. The WMS has been frequently used for gas measurement and relies on the linear relationship between the second harmonic amplitude and the gas volume concentration. However, the conventional WMS technique is only applicable for the gas whose absorbance is much smaller than 1, which is because the first-order approximation of Lambert-Beer's law is required in the derivation of the traditional WMS theory, and the first-order approximation holds only at low absorbance, hence the linear relationship between the second harmonic and the gas concentration does not hold at large absorbance. In the modified WMS in this work, it is not necessary to make any approximation to Lambert-Beer's law. The measured light is absorbed by the gas to be measured and then collected by the photodetector. The reference light is directly detected by another photodetector without being absorbed. The output signals of the two photodetectors are transmitted to the computer after implementing analog-to-digital conversion. In this way, the demodulated second harmonic signal remains linear with the gas concentration even at large absorbance. In this work, the traditional WMS theory and the modified WMS theory are both introduced, and a series of methane gas with concentration gradients are measured separately. The experimental results of the traditional WMS and the modified WMS are compared with each other. It is confirmed that the linearity in the traditional WMS theory no longer holds under large absorbance, but the improved WMS can still guarantee the linear relationship between the second harmonic and the methane concentration, which verifies the advantages of the modified scheme. Finally, through Allan's standard deviation analysis, the stability of this methane measurement system reaches the optimal value at the average time of 103.6 s, and the corresponding Allan's standard deviation is 1/26.62×10–9 volume.
Near-Infrared Dual-Range Methane Sensor Using the OAIC-HC Mode Based on VMD-SG-Assisted Optical Noise Suppression

Abstract:Based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy and off-axis integrated cavity output spectroscopy, a dual-range methane hybrid sensor was constructed utilizing the overtone absorption band of CH4 gas molecules at 1653.7 nm. By simultaneously utilizing an off-axis integrated cavity and Herriott cell with an effective absorption path of 11 and 405 m, respectively, the two received photoelectric signals are decomposed into different frequency components by VMD and then reconstructed after SG filtering. Applying the global optimization algorithm DA-ELM to CH4 concentration inversion, the correlation coefficient R2 is as high as 0.9995. Through long-term stability verification, the instrument's standard deviation at 1 ppm is 27 ppb. After Allan-Werle deviation analysis, the sensor's limit of detection is 2.298 ppb at an integration time of 138 s. Using the self-developed sensor, the detection of dual-range trace CH4 gas is achieved, enabling a dynamic detection range of trace CH4 gas ranging from 400 ppb to 1000 ppm. The sensor realizes dual-range methane trace detection and actively controls methane emissions to improve environmental quality while taking into account the safety benefits of reducing production accidents.

Abstract:Based on analysis of the near infrared spectral absorption of methane and factors such as compatibility with the transmission characteristics of silica optical fiber and the price,a method for methane gas sensing using a 1.3 μm LED as a light source is demonstrated. A sensitivity of 1 300 ppm/m has been achieved with this method. The sensitivity can be improved by increasing the power of the sensing beam and the cell-length, and by decreasing the noise of electronic circuit.
