Abstract:Solid sorption refrigeration is a type of environmental benign and energy saving technology and the sorbents utilized can be divided into physical, chemical and composite sorbents, according to the nature of the forces involved in the adsorption process. The types, characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of different adsorbents, refrigerants and working pairs are summarized in this paper, together with the models that describe the adsorption equilibrium. Moreover, some of the procedures to prepare composite adsorbents are presented. The application of different working pairs for different situations is related with the adsorption heat, the adaptability to the driving temperature and to the desired working pressure. The methods to measure the adsorption quantity of different working pairs are compared, and future research directions of adsorption working pairs are also analyzed.

Abstract:The effective diffusivity of adsorption refrigeration working pair 13X-H2O was determined by TG in unsteady diffusition.The data range is from 50℃ to 250℃ in temperature and from 0.6kPa to 3.5kPa in pressure.The experimental data showed that the influences of pressure and concentration on the effective diffusivity are very small and can be expressed in the Arrhenius equation.The surface diffusion of water is the main control factor in the pellet diffusion.

Abstract:In adsorption refrigeration, one of the key factors is the choice of the working pair. Therefore, the adsorption and desorption equilibrium data are very useful for designers and also for the analysis of the thermodynamic performance. In this paper, R-123 (2,2-dichloro-1,1,1-trifluoroethane) refrigerant with activated carbon adsorption cooling working pair is investigated. The adsorption is carried out with a thermogravimetric balance, and the equilibrium data are obtained. The Dubinin-Astakhov modified model is used to calculate the adsorption equilibrium parameters. The maximum adsorption capacity is obtained. The standard estimate error (SEE) between the experiment and the model result is evaluated. The results give a good agreement with the experiment data. The influence of the heterogeneity coefficient n to the adsorption capacity is presented. Desorption also is carried out to calculate the thermodynamic performance (refrigeration capacity) at different regeneration temperatures.

Firstly, the complexation mechanism of metal chloride–ammonia is analyzed, and then the Clapeyron equations are given. Abstract:In the design of adsorption refrigeration/heat pump systems, the characteristics of both adsorbent-adsorbate (refrigerant) pairs and adsorption cycles play an important role in various kinds of applications. The description of the performance of the adsorption-desorption process involves different modeling techniques with various simplifications, and the corresponding results are significantly different. In this paper, a thermal model based on the Dubinin-Radushkevich equation and thermodynamic analyses is given, which presents a complete and precise description of adsorption-desorption cycles. In the model, variable physical properties with temperature, such as specific heat of working pairs, isosteric heat of desorption or adsorption, are particularly considered, several main factors affecting the performance of cycles are discussed according to the results of computer simulations, such as the characteristics of working pairs and the working conditions, especially the heat capacities of generators. The relationship between the performance of the cycles and these factors is initially investigated. The performances of advanced cycles, such as the heat regenerative adsorption cycle, are also analyzed and compared with that of the basic adsorption cycle. Copyright (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Abstract:<p>Adsorption cooling is getting huge attention from last few years due to environment-friendly and thermally-driven technology. Many systems designs based on various adsorbent-adsorbate pairs are investigated worldwide to develop a cost-effective and high-performance system. Until now, performance of the systems is lower as compared to conventional compressor-based systems. Performance of the adsorption systems mainly depends on adsorption equilibrium, adsorption kinetics, isosteric heat of adsorption, and thermo-physical/chemical properties of assorted adsorbent-refrigerant pairs. Thereby, the present study aims to review and compare the physical properties (surface area, pore volume/size etc.) of adsorbents and adsorption equilibrium (adsorption isotherm) by various types of adsorbent-adsorbate pairs available in the literature. Amount of adsorbate adsorbed per unit mass of adsorbent has been critically reviewed and compared accordingly. Highest adsorption uptake was attributed in case of R-32 adsorption onto phenol resin-based activated carbon i.e. 2.23 kg/kg (excess adsorption) and 2.34 kg/kg (absolute adsorption) at 30 °C and 1670 kPa. Activated carbon of type Maxsorb-III being highly microporous possesses high surface area and shows good adsorption uptakes for most of the adsorbates including ethanol, methanol R-134a, CO<sub>2</sub>, R-507A and n-butane. In addition, fundamentals, principle and features of adsorption cooling systems are discussed. Adsorption equilibrium models used to express the adsorption mechanics of adsorbent-adsorbate pairs are explored, and the models' parameters are collectively listed and discussed. The review is useful to prioritize available adsorbent-adsorbate pairs for adsorption based heat transformation applications. The study is useful for researchers working for the development of adsorbent materials for various applications and conditions.</p>

Basic Principles for Substantiation of Working Pair Choice

Abstract:The chapter is devoted to basic principles for substantiation of working pair choice. Principles for substantiation for selection of adsorbate and adsorbent are considered. The main requirements to adsorbate are formulated as follows: low cost, easy of obtaining, small molecular size to facilitate the adsorption effect; high latent heat of evaporation and small volume in liquid state; high thermal conductivity; low viscosity, thermal stability with adsorbent in the operating temperature range; chemical stability in the working temperature range; non-toxicity for animals and human, non-aggressiveness and incombustibility; low pressure saturation (slightly above atmospheric pressure) at normal operating temperature; the absence of environmental problems. Water is shown to conform to these requirements. The crucial requirements to adsorbent are the ability to adsorb large amounts of adsorbate when cooled to environment temperature and give a high cooling effect; high values of maximal adsorption; desorption of the major portion of adsorbate (ideally all) when heated by an accessible source of heat; low heat capacity; good heat conductivity, short cycle time; no deterioration and loss of adsorption capacity over time or use; non-toxicity, non-aggressiveness; chemical physical compatibility with the selected adsorbate; low cost and wide availability. Properties of various types of adsorbents were compared. Composites ‘salt inside porous matrix' are shown to be promising media for heat storage and transformation. Characteristics of thermodynamic cycles of heat conversion were analysed. The ways to improve the coefficient of performance were analysed and shown to be affected by a proper choice of an adsorbent.

Abstract:In this study, the ideal adsorption cycle behavior of eight activated carbon and refrigerant pairs is evaluated. The selected pairs are KOH6-PR/ethanol, WPT-AC/ethanol, Maxsorb-III/methanol, Maxsorb-III/CO2, Maxsorb-III/n-butane, Maxsorb-III/R-134a, SAC-2/R32 and Maxsorb-III/R507a. The following cooling performance parameters are evaluated for all pairs: specific cooling energy (SCE), concentration difference (ΔW) and coefficient of performance (COP) of ideal adsorption cooling and refrigeration cycles. The evaporator temperatures for the applications of adsorption cooling and refrigeration are selected as 7 and −5 °C, respectively. It is found that the Maxsorb-III/methanol pair has shown the highest specific cooling energy and coefficient of performance in a wide range of desorption temperatures; i.e., for the adsorption cooling cycle it has SCE and COP of 639.83 kJ/kg and 0.803, respectively, with desorption temperatures of 80 °C. The KOH6-PR/ethanol and the WPT-AC/ethanol pairs also give good performances comparable to that of the Maxsorb-III/methanol pair. However, the SAC-2/R32 pair possesses a higher concentration difference than the Maxsorb-III/methanol, KOH6-PR/ethanol and WPT-AC/ethanol pairs but shows a lower performance. This is due to the lower isosteric heat of adsorption of SAC-2/R32 compared to these pairs. It is found that Maxsorb-III/methanol, KOH6-PR/ethanol and WPT-AC/ethanol are the most promising pairs for application in designing adsorption cooling and refrigeration systems.

Abstract:In this study, the most promising working pairs are evaluated for utilization in thermal driven adsorptive heat pumping, air conditioning and refrigeration applications employing water, ethanol and methanol as refrigerant. With this aim, a comparative study was carried out for different currently available (silica gels, zeolites, aluminophosphates, activated carbons) and recently developed materials (composite adsorbents). A simple mathematical model was developed in order to evaluate the performance of various working pairs for different sorption cycles. Among the considered adsorbents, the Mitsubishi product AQSOA®-FAM-Z02, the composite adsorbents LiBr–silica and CaCl2–silica appeared the best water adsorbents for air conditioning and heat pumping purpose, providing heating/cooling COP up to 1.62/0.71 and heating/cooling enthalpy up to 1080/570kJkg−1. Also the LiCl–silica/methanol working pair showed high performance for air conditioning cycles, especially in terms of cooling enthalpy (Qev=640kJkg−1).The composite LiBr–silica showed to be the most promising methanol and ethanol sorbent for refrigeration purpose, permitting cooling COP in the range 0.53–0.59 and cooling enthalpy in the range 180–360kJkg−1.The noticeable influence of the metal-to-adsorbent mass ratio on the sorption cycle performance was also demonstrated, showing that utilization of compact finned tube aluminum heat exchanger types (typical mmet/mads=0.9–1.6) allows a 15–30% cooling COP higher than a traditional stainless steel tube-and-shell exchanger (mmet/mads=2.4–3.1). Additionally, some brief dynamic considerations are done for most interesting working pairs.

Abstract:Correlations capable of predicting organic compound adsorption by activated carbons (ACs) are essential to the applications of ACs as environmental adsorbents in water treatment. Adsorption isotherms of 21 aromatic compounds on 11 ACs both with various physicochemical properties were conducted and fitted by Dubinin-Ashtakhov model to develop the predictive correlations in this study. In addition to the correlations of adsorption capacity with total surface area of ACs, micropore surface area ratios (Rmicro) of ACs and chemical molar volume reported in previous studies, the negative correlation of adsorption capacity with chemical melting point was newly observed in this study. This negative correlation could be attributed to expansion of chemicals adsorbed on the mesopore or external surface of ACs. Meanwhile, in addition to the positive correlations of adsorption affinity with Rmicro of ACs, chemical polarity/polarizability and hydrogen bonding donor ability reported also in previous studies, the negative correlation of adsorption affinity with H/C of ACs was newly observed in this study, which should be attributed to that ACs with higher aromaticity could have stronger π-π interaction potential, hydrogen bonding interaction potential and hydrophobic effects for aromatic compounds. These observed correlations can be used to predict aromatic compound adsorption by ACs with readily available properties of both ACs (i.e., surface area, Rmicro and H/C) and aromatic compounds (i.e., molar volume, melting point and solvatochromic parameters). Moreover, these predictive correlations, incorporating various adsorptive forces, steric hindrance effect and packing efficiency in adsorption and having clearly physicochemical significance, are important for exploring the adsorption mechanisms, and guiding the synthesis of ACs with desired physicochemical properties, and selecting ACs as adsorbents in water treatment applications.

Abstract:An adsorption cooling system is a heat-activated cooling system based on the solid sorption process. It is also a good choice for solar cooling, just like the absorption cooling system. In this chapter, the working principles of both intermittent and continuous adsorption cooling systems are introduced. The choices of physical adsorption working pair, chemical adsorption working pair, and composite adsorption working pair are introduced. Various adsorption cooling systems are then classified and introduced based on the coupled solar collector, working pair, cooling output, and operating process. This information offers a guideline to solar-driven adsorption cooling systems for various conditions.
Experimental Investigation on Working Pairs for a Two?stage Sorption Refrigeration Cycle

Abstract:Recently, a CaCl2?BaCl2?NH3 chemisorption freezing cycle driven by a low?temperature heat source has drawn an increasing a?mount of attention. To develop a working pair with a more desirable performance than CaCl2?BaCl2?NH3 , working pairs of CaCl2?NaBr?NH3 , SrCl2?BaCl2?NH3 , and SrCl2?NH4 Cl?NH3 were investigated and compared. Most composite adsorbents were developed with a novel matrix of expanded natural graphite treated with sulfuric acid ( ENG?TSA) , leaving one serial with expanded natural graphite ( ENG) for comparison. For SrCl2?NH4 Cl?NH3 and CaCl2?NaBr?NH3 , experimental results show that the maximum adsorption quantities are 95. 4％and 88. 6％ of the theoretical values, respectively. Simulation results indicate that the best results are obtained from CaCl2?NaBr?NH3 , and its specific cooling power (SCP) and coefficient of performance (COP) are as high as 260. 74 W/kgand 0. 285, respectively, which are 15. 1％ and 5. 6％ better than the values for CaCl2?BaCl2?NH3 . It is also noted that, for different working pairs, the COP, cooling ca?pacity, and SCP range from 0. 215 to 0. 285, 2 to 3. 65 kW, and 161. 4 to 260. 74 W/kg, respectively. Comparisons also show that the ENG?TSA matrix effectively improves the SCP. For example, the SCP of CaCl2?BaCl2?NH3 is improved by 40. 2％, when compared with a working pair with the ENG matrix.

Abstract:The adsorption refrigeration is based on the evaporation and condensation of a refrigerant combined with adsorption or chemical reaction. The soaring fossil fuel price and the awareness of environmental problems offer many potential applications to thermal powered adsorption cooling. However, the adsorption cooling machines still have some disadvantages that hinder their wide application. This paper reviews more than 100 patents filed mainly since year 2000 that propose technologies to improve adsorption system and make it become a realistic alternative. The patents surveyed are classified into four main groups: adsorption system development, adsorbent bed innovation, adsorbent/adsorbate material development and novel application of adsorption cooling system. The various technology options are discussed and evaluated. "Hot spots" and key inventors/applicants are identified. An assessment is made about current and future development of adsorption refrigeration technologies. The performance of two adsorption ice making test units using activated carbon and a carbon composite as adsorbents

Abstract:The available adsorption working pairs applied to adsorption refrigeration system, which utilize activated carbon as adsorbent, are mainly activated carbon–methanol, activated carbon–ammonia, and composite adsorbent–ammonia. The adsorption properties and refrigeration application of these three types of adsorption working pairs are investigated. For the physical adsorbents, consolidated activated carbon showed best heat transfer performance, and activated carbon–methanol showed the best adsorption property because of the large refrigerant amount that can be adsorbed. For the composite adsorbents, the consolidated composite adsorbent with mass ratio of 4:1 between CaCl2 and activated carbon, showed the highest cooling density when compared to the granular composite adsorbent and to the merely chemical adsorbent. The physical adsorption icemaker that employs consolidated activated carbon–methanol as working pair had the optimum coefficient of refrigeration performance (COP), volume cooling power density (SCPv) and specific cooling power per kilogram adsorbent (SCP) of 0.125, 9.25kW/m3 and 32.6W/kg, respectively. The composite adsorption system that employs the consolidated composite adsorbent had a maximum COP, SCPv and SCP of 0.35, 52.68kW/m3 and 493.2W/kg, respectively, for ice making mode. These results are improved by 1.8, 4.7 and 14 times, respectively, when compared to the results of the physical adsorption icemaker.
