Abstract:Bismuth tungstate has attracted great attention as a new photocatalyst working under visible irradiation. In this paper, we demonstrate a facile hydrothermal route for controllable synthesis of novel Bi(2)WO(6) hierarchical hollow spheres with an ultrahigh specific surface area in the presence of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) at a proper C(2)H(5)OH/CH(3)COOH/H(2)O volume ratio. The obtained products are systematically studied by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. It is shown that the Bi(2)WO(6) hollow spheres are constructed of numerous nanoplates while the nanoplates consist of a great deal of nanoparticles. UV-vis spectrum is used to estimate the band gap energy (about 2.90 eV) of the Bi(2)WO(6) hollow spheres. The ultrahigh BET specific surface area of ca. 45.0 m(2) g(-1) is displayed for the Bi(2)WO(6) hierarchical hollow spheres, which is much higher than that for all the previously reported Bi(2)WO(6) products. The Bi(2)WO(6) hierarchical hollow spheres are displayed to possess superior photocatalytic activity in the photodegradation of rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation over other morphological products.

Abstract:Hierarchical flower-like MoS2 spheres with high purity were synthesized by hydrothermal method using WO3 nanorods or H2WO4 as an additive. The flower-like spheres were about 1μm in diameter and built up with MoS2 thin flakes with thickness of several nanometers. Energy disperse X-ray spectrum showed that the spheres were only composed of Mo and S with atomic ratio of 2:1. Powder X-ray diffraction result further indicated that the products were MoS2. The reaction mechanism is discussed and suggested that tungstenic acid played an important role on the formation of flower-like MoS2 spheres.

Abstract:One-dimensional hierarchical Bi2WO6 hollow tubes with porous walls have been solvothermally synthesized using Bi2O3 rods as both template and reactant, and characterized by FESEM, TEM and XRD. Experimental results indicate that the walls of these micro-tubes are made of Bi2WO6 nanoplates stacking in a disordered state, which creates an interesting macro-mesoporous structure. Influencing factors on the resulting products including the adding order of reactants, ethanol content, and pH value are systematically investigated. A possible mechanism based on the Kirkendall effect is proposed. What is more, in comparison with commercial TiO2 powders (P25) the hierarchical Bi2WO6 hollow tube structure exhibits a superior shape-associated photocatalytic activity in degrading RhB under simulated sunlight irradiation. The high photocatalytic performance can be attributed to the novel hierarchical structure, which enables good permeability, large BET surface areas, and proper energy band. Moreover, the employed "sacrificial template" method can be extended to the synthesis of other Bi-based photocatalysts successfully.

Abstract:Bi2WO6 uniform hierarchical microspheres were grown on a large scale at 180 °C by a simple hydrothermal method with the help of the surfactant poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP). X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) were used to characterize the product. The result indicated that three-dimensional (3D) Bi2WO6 microspheres were constructed layer-by-layer from a large number of two-dimensional (2D) sheets, which were composed of numerous interconnected square nanoplates with a mean side length of 65 nm. Pore-size distribution analysis showed that both mesopores and macropores existed in the 3D microstructures. The formation mechanism was discussed on the basis of the results of time-dependent experiments. It was demonstrated that PVP played a key role in the formation of such hierarchical microspheres. Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical clew-like microspheres with small size of bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6) were successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal route at a proper volume ratio (1 : 1) of H2O/EG mixed solution. It has been found that ethylene glycol (EG) plays important roles in the formation of the clew-like structure. Bi2WO6 with different morphologies could be obtained by simply adjusting the volume ratio of the H2O/EG in the mixed solution. The kinetic features of photo-induced charges transfer properties of samples have been discussed by surface photovoltage spectrum (SPS) and transient photovoltage (TPV) techniques in detail. The Bi2WO6 with hierarchical clew-like structure possessed the highest efficiency of electron-hole separation and the lowest recombination rate of photoinduced charges, resulting in the highest photocatalytic activity for the degradation of Orange-II under the visible light (lambda > 420 nm) illumination. The information provided here is thought to be beneficial for engineering high efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:Bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6) has attracted great research interest as an important visible-light-responsive photocatalyst. In this paper, we report a facile hydrothermal route for the shape-controlled synthesis of micro/nanostructured Bi2WO6, without adding surfactants or templates. The results show that various morphologies of Bi2WO6 including coralloid spherical particles, packed nanosheets, fluffy microspheres, and plates can be obtained by adjusting the pH values of the precursors. The as-prepared porous fluffy microspheres with a hierarchical architecture synthesized at pH 8 exhibit the highest photocatalytic activity for the degradation of Rhodamine (RhB) under visible light irradiation. The photodegradation efficiency reaches as high as 99% within 20min irradiation. This enhanced photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the unique porous structure and high BET surface area of fluffy microspheres with hierarchical architecture.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical Bi2WO6 microspheres were successfully synthesized by a simple inorganic salt-assisted hydrothermal process. Morphology modulation of the obtained products could be easily realized by tuning the concentration of the nitrate. It is worthy to note that the obtained hierarchical Bi2WO6 microspheres exhibit powerful visible-light-photocatalytic activity for the degradation of Rhodamine-B (RhB) under 300 W Xe lamp light irradiation. A possible salt-assisted formation mechanism was proposed on the basis of the experimental results. Furthermore, this work might represent a novel synthesis strategy for other photocatalysts with desired photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:A novel 3D flower-like morphology of U/Bi2WO6 composite was successfully synthesized by the hydrothermal method assisted by sodium dodecyl sulfate using Bi(NO3)3·5H2O, Na2WO4·2H2O and UO2(CH3COO)2·2H2O as precursors. The shape of as-prepared product presents a good flower-like particle, and a higher photocatalytic activity of the sample is found which methylene blue can be completely degradated in 50 min under visible light irradiation and in 30 min under UV light irradiation.

Abstract:Hollow ZnO microspheres with nanowires grown on the inner and outer surfaces (HZMSnws) have been successfully synthesized by a simple two-step thermal process approach, where pre-deposited Zn powder particles on Si substrates act as temporary templates to form hollow ZnO sphere shells, while additional Zn powder acts as a Zn source to grow single crystal nanowires on the surfaces of spherical shells. SEM, XRD, TEM and HRTEM were used to characterize the morphology and crystalline structure of the samples. Photoluminescence (PL) measurement shows strong UV emission (380 nm) of HZMSnws samples. Lacking the need for the additional template removal is an important advantage of this approach over others and it therefore can be used to prepare hollow ZnO nano/microsphere shells (HZMSs) and HZMSnws at low cost and at large scale. These kinds of special high surface area hollow spherical structures may find potential applications in photocatalysis, light-weight composite fillers, acoustic insulation, UV nano/micro-optoemission devices and photoanodes of dye-sensitized solar cells.

Bi2S3 microspheres composed of nanorods with a diameter of 20-40 nm were synthesized at 180 degrees C for 12 h. In similar conditions at 240 degrees C for 3 days, micronowers composed of nanowires with lengths up to several micrometers and diameter of 20-40 nm were obtained. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) showed in the initial stage in the formation process that smooth spherical cores were observed, then on the surface of the cores nanoparticles appeared, and finally nanorods or nanowires grew out and microspheres and microflowers formed. Electrochemical experiments using Bi2S3 in a lithium ion battery indicated that the first discharge capacity of Bi2S3 microflowers could reach about 148 mA h g(-1).

Abstract:Hierarchical TiO2 hollow spheres had been prepared based on bubble templates by a simple one-step hydrothermal method. The diameter of hollow spheres was about 700nm and the shell thickness of them was 69nm. They were composed of similar spindle- or needle-like building units. Furthermore, hydrothermal time had an important influence on the morphology and crystallinity of hollow spheres. Moreover, the UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra of TiO2 hollow spheres heated at 150°C for 10h showed the strongest absorption in the UV–Vis region and the Raman spectrum demonstrated the anatase sample. Additionally, a possible formation mechanism of TiO2 hollow spheres was proposed. So this novel and simple method would provide a development direction to fabricate all kinds of inorganic hollow spheres by one-step procedure.

Abstract:This work presents a one-pot template-free synthesis, detailed characterization, growth mechanism and application of well-defined uniform monodisperse (BiO)(2)CO3 hierarchical hollow microspheres self-assembled with single-crystalline nanosheets. The synthesis was conducted by hydrothermal treatment of bismuth citrate and sodium carbonate in water. Time-dependent evolutions of phase structure, composition, and morphology were investigated systematically and revealed that the growth mechanism of such novel structures involved a unique multistep pathway. First, near amorphous particles were produced through reaction, nucleation, crystallization, and aggregation processes. Then, stacked embryos of intermediate (BiO)(4)CO3(OH)(2) microspheres with attached particles were produced due to dissolution and recrystallization. Subsequently, stacked uniform solid microspheres with small particles attached on edges were generated by the consumption of particles through Ostwald ripening. The stacked microspheres further grew to form monodisperse hierarchical microspheres with a hole in the center, like flower buds. Finally, uniform monodisperse (BiO)(2)CO3 hierarchical hollow microspheres were produced through layers splitting. The aggregation of the self-assembled nanosheets contributed to the formation of 3D hierarchical architecture containing mesopores, which is favorable for efficient reactants transport and photo-energy harvesting. Furthermore, the band gap structure of (BiO)(2)CO3 was revealed by the experimental method combined with density functional theoretical calculation. As expected, the novel (BiO)(2)CO3 hierarchical hollow microspheres exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity due to the special hierarchical morphology, exceeding that of (BiO)(2)CO3 particles and commercial P25. The as-prepared uniform (BiO)(2)CO3 microspheres with well-defined hierarchical hollow structures are also ideal candidates for investigating their architecture-dependent performances in other areas, such as solar energy conversion, catalysis, electronics and so on.

Abstract:In this work, hierarchical WO3·H2O porous microspheres and conventional smooth WO3·H2O microspheres were successfully fabricated via a simple hydrothermal process. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope. Meanwhile, the possible evolution processes of the two products were discussed based on time-dependent experiments. Remarkably, hierarchical porous spherical architectures which possess abundant micro reaction rooms, exhibited improved gas-sensing performance compared to smooth sphere-like structures. It is believed that this unique nanostructure has great potential to enhance the gas-sensing properties of tungsten oxides and other semiconductor materials.
