Abstract:This paper is from the SAE World Congress & Exhibition, held in April 2007 in Detroit, Michigan, USA. Part of the Pedestrian Safety session, this paper reports on a study of ways to optimize head impact waveform to reduce head injury criterion (HIC). In order to reduce head impact injuries to vehicle occupants during accidents, the FMVSS 201 requires padding of the vehicle interior so that under the free-moving-head-form impact, the head injury criterion (HIC) is below a certain limit. The authors note that pedestrian head impact on the vehicle hood has also become a subject of interest and is now being studied and regulated as requirements of the automobile manufacturers. The authors revisit the topic of head impact and question whether the traditionally-used square waveform is the best approach for understanding head impacts. The authors consider several different simple waveforms, with the objective to achieve minimal HIC or minimal crush space required in head-form impacts. They conclude that many other waveforms can be more efficient and more practical than the square wave, especially for the pedestrian impact. They propose a theoretical most efficient waveform and describe some with more practical applications, including the modified optimal waveform and ramp-down triangle waveform.
