Abstract:Information technologies have been developed to facilitate driving performance and improve safety. However, there is a lack of computational methods that can take into account drivers' adaptation to driving. That is, how behaviour changes with experience. Modelling the effect of driving experience on driver behaviour is important to the development of in-vehicle information technologies, because drivers at different skill levels may need different types or levels of assistance. Cognitive-architecture-based human performance modelling is a valuable method that can integrate different cognitive aspects underlying human behaviour such as skill levels and support quantitative simulation of behaviour. The study reported in this paper tested and examined computational models built in ACT-R (Adaptive Control of Thought-Rational) to account for the effect of driving experience on collision avoidance braking behaviour. The modelling results were compared with human data collected from a simulated driving experiment. The models produced braking behavioural results similar to the human results. Moreover, model predictions of three other emergent-braking scenarios were generally similar to and in the same order with the empirical results reported in previous studies. Future research can further integrate the method and results into intelligent driver assistance systems such as collision warning systems to better adjust the systems to the need of different drivers with different skill levels.

Abstract:In the method of driving simulation, behavioral characteristics of driver can be learned safely even under abnormal state. This kind of experimental method also contributes to analyze driver's emergency response in a variety of complex conditions and it has a good experimental reproducibility, which can be applied in traffic safety, accident reconstruction, ergonomics and other fields. The combination of driving simulation and computer modeling is the development direction of accident analysis, provided the necessary basis conditions by the in-depth data analysis of traffic accidents. According to the data of real cases of side-impact accidents provided by the traffic police, typical accident pattern, crash feature and road scene can be extracted out. Based on this study, we can model multi-view scenario of typical side-impact accident to simulate the process of the accident to obtain the data of driver reaction characteristics and vehicle motion parameters, in the method of designing the environment and trigger condition of side-impact for driving simulation.
Injury Biomechanics Evaluation of a Driver with Disabilities during a Road Accident-A Numerical Approach

Abstract:Numerical methods are often a robust way to predict how external mechanical loads affect individual biological structures. Computational models of biological systems have been developed over the years, reaching high levels of detail, complexity, and precision. In this study, two cases were analysed, differing in the airbag operation; in the first, the airbag was normally activated, and in the second case, the airbag was disabled. We analysed a model of a disabled person without a left leg who steers a vehicle using a specialized knob on the steering wheel. In both cases, a head-on collision between a car moving at an initial speed of 50 km/h and a rigid obstacle was analysed. We concluded that the activated airbag for a person with disabilities reduces the effects of asymmetries in the positioning of the belts and body support points. Moreover, all the biomechanical parameters, analysed on the 50th percentile dummy, i.e., HIC, seat belt contact force and neck injury criterion (Nij) support the use of an airbag. The resulting accelerations, measured in the head of the dummy, were induced into a finite element head model (YEAHM) to kinematically drive the head and simulate both accidents, with and without the airbag. In the latter, the subsequent head injury prediction revealed a form of contrecoup injury, more specifically cerebral contusion based on the intracranial pressure levels that were achieved. Therefore, based on the in-depth investigation, a frontal airbag can significantly lower the possibility of injuries for disabled drivers, including cerebral contusions.

Abstract:Vehicle-pedestrian accidents are one of the main types of road traffic accidents in China because of their mixed traffic features. By analyzing the characteristics of vehicle-pedestrian accidents, the head injury criterion (HIC) was selected as a quantitative index of pedestrian head injury risk, and vehicle-pedestrian collision simulation tests were carried out using PC-Crash. From the collected test data, the multivariate relationship models between the HIC, vehicle speed, and collision angle were fitted for different vehicle types. A risk assessment method for vehicle-pedestrian accidents based on the HIC was proposed by the Fisher optimal segmentation algorithm. Finally, a new index for evaluating the accuracy of accident risk classification, the degree of error classification, was proposed to verify the validity of the accident risk assessment method. The results show that vehicle speed, collision angle, and vehicle type play a key role in pedestrian injury. Flat-headed vehicles are more likely to cause head injuries to pedestrians than high-headed and low-headed vehicles. Rear-end collisions cause more injuries to pedestrians than side collisions. The research results can provide guidance and a basis for accident liability determination, speed limit management, vehicle safety design, and human injury mechanism analysis.

Abstract:As the input of vehicle decision-making and control, risk quantification plays a vital role in improving intelligent driving safety. However, the quantification of driving risk is difficult since the dynamic and complex driver-vehicle-road traffic environment causes the time-varying and coupling of driving risk. This paper presents a unified quantitative method of driving risk and establishes an overall framework of the driving risk model. This method is based on the artificial potential field theory, vehicle kinematics, and dynamics. To determine the source of driving risk, we start from the fact that traffic accidents are abnormal energy transfers. A unified quantitative method based on the equivalent force model is proposed and analyzed in detail to design the overall framework of driving risk. The modeling method of an integrated driving risk model by comprehensive considering driver-vehicle-road factors is obtained. Moreover, we verify the feasibility of the model through three natural vehicle experiments, including a car-following scenario, a cut-in scenario, and an intersection conflict scenario. The experimental results show that the proposed driving risk assessment method can accurately identify driving risk level and direction with V2V technical support. This method applies to the collision warning system, which can forecast driving risk, broadcast the location of the risk in advance, and provide the driver with control suggestions to ensure driving safety.

Abstract:Driving information and data under potential vehicle crashes create opportunities for extensive real-world observations of driver behaviors and relevant factors that significantly influence the driving safety in emergency scenarios. Furthermore, the availability of such data also enhances the collision avoidance systems (CASs) by evaluating driver's actions in near-crash scenarios and providing timely warnings. These applications motivate the need for heuristic tools capable of inferring relationship among driving risk, driver/vehicle characteristics, and road environment. In this paper, we acquired amount of real-world driving data and built a comprehensive dataset, which contains multiple "driver-vehicle-road" attributes. The proposed method works in two steps. In the first step, a variable precision rough set (VPRS) based classification technique is applied to draw a reduced core subset from field driving dataset, which presents the essential attributes set most relevant to driving safety assessment. In the second step, we design a decision strategy by introducing mutual information entropy to quantify the significance of each attribute, then a representative index through accumulation of weighted "driver-vehicle-road" factors is calculated to reflect the driving risk for actual situation. The performance of the proposed method is demonstrated in an offline analysis of the driving data collected in field trials, where the aim is to infer the emergency braking actions in next short term. The results indicate that our proposed model is a good alternative for providing improved warnings in real-time because of its high prediction accuracy and stability.

Abstract:The objective of this study is to propose an approach for improving the efficiency of accident reconstruction and obtaining the probabilistic distribution of pre-impact parameters through integrating numerical simulation and robust optimization techniques. First, the ranges and probabilistic distribution of collision parameters are determined by investigators. Then, the optimal Latin hypercube design is used to generate sample points in predefined design space and corresponding responses are obtained by PC-Crash. The radial basis functions method is used to construct the surrogate models, accuracy evaluation is conducted using the cross-validation method. Finally, a robust optimization is completed to obtain the probabilistic distribution of collision parameters. Furthermore, a real-world vehicle-to-pedestrian accident is reconstructed to specifically explain and validate the method. The results show that the numerical simulation coupled with robust optimization technique is an effective means of obtaining the probabilistic distribution of pre-impact inputs. The proposed approach will help the traffic accident to scientifically conduct the traffic accident identification.
Realistic Reference for Evaluation of Vehicle Safety Focusing on Pedestrian Head Protection Observed From Kinematic Reconstruction of Real-World Collisions

Abstract:Head-to-vehicle contact boundary condition and criteria and corresponding thresholds of head injuries are crucial in evaluation of vehicle safety performance for pedestrian protection, which need a constantly updated understanding of pedestrian head kinematic response and injury risk in real-world collisions. Thus, the purpose of the current study is to investigate the characteristics of pedestrian head-to-vehicle contact boundary condition and pedestrian AIS3+ (Abbreviated Injury Scale) head injury risk as functions of kinematic-based criteria, including HIC (Head Injury Criterion), HIP (Head Impact Power), GAMBIT (Generalized Acceleration Model for Brain Injury Threshold), RIC (Rotational Injury Criterion), and BrIC (Brain Injury Criteria), in real-world collisions. To achieve this, 57 vehicle-to-pedestrian collision cases were employed, and a multi-body modeling approach was applied to reconstruct pedestrian kinematics in these real-world collisions. The results show that head-to-windscreen contacts are dominant in pedestrian collisions of the analysis sample and that head WAD (Wrap Around Distance) floats from 1.5 to 2.3 m, with a mean value of 1.84 m; 80% of cases have a head linear contact velocity below 45 km/h or an angular contact velocity less than 40 rad/s; pedestrian head linear contact velocity is on average 83 ± 23% of the vehicle impact velocity, while the head angular contact velocity (in rad/s) is on average 75 ± 25% of the vehicle impact velocity in km/h; 77% of cases have a head contact time in the range 50–140 ms, and negative and positive linear correlations are observed for the relationships between pedestrian head contact time and WAD/height ratio and vehicle impact velocity, respectively; 70% of cases have a head contact angle floating from 40° to 70°, with an average value of 53°; the pedestrian head contact angles on windscreens (average = 48°) are significantly lower than those on bonnets (average = 60°); the predicted thresholds of HIC, HIP, GAMBIT, RIC, BrIC2011, and BrIC2013 for a 50% probability of AIS3+ head injury risk are 1,300, 60 kW, 0.74, 1,470 × 10 4 , 0.56, and 0.57, respectively. The findings of the current work could provide realistic reference for evaluation of vehicle safety performance focusing on pedestrian protection.

Abstract:Driving simulator and computer simulation are combined to reconstruct the kinematic process of pedestrian-vehicle crash. Firstly, in-depth data from 158 accident cases in Beijing is analyzed. Additionally, the typical accident factors, collision characteristics, road status, and drivers' emergency behavior are classified and integrated to establish virtual scenarios of pedestrian vehicle accidents. Moreover, volunteer drivers are tested on the driving simulator while data of vehicles' real-time kinetic parameters from different emergency measure stages is recorded. Furthermore, the process of pedestrian-vehicle crash is modeled and simulated by accident analysis software PC-CRASH to obtain the data of pedestrian's head centroid acceleration, and the HIC value is calculated as an injury indicator. Finally, the collected data is analyzed to find out the relation between drivers' various emergency measures and pedestrians' injury severity. The results show that steering with braking is the most effective measure among drivers' various measures. This paper may provide some valuable suggestions on research of driving safety as well as intelligent transportation.

Abstract:Traffic accident statistics have shown the necessity of risk assessment when driving in the dynamic traffic environment. If the risk associated with different traffic elements (i.e., road, environment and vehicles) could be evaluated accurately, potential accidents could be significantly avoided or mitigated. This paper proposes a driving risk assessment model that can quantitatively evaluate the driving risk associated with intelligent vehicles via the coupled analysis of different traffic elements. First, we present a concept of the internal field and external field for establishing the driving risk coupling model, through employing the internal field to define the risk range of driver's perspective and the external field to calculate the risk coefficients of those traffic elements. Then, the relative risk coefficients are computed by incorporating both naturalistic driving study (NDS) and driver attitude questionnaire (DAQ) using a multinomial logit model. Specifically, we perform a large-scale naturalistic driving study to investigate the objective driving risks. Typical driver behavior parameters, such as velocity, time headway, and acceleration, are analyzed. Besides, a self-reported survey of 364 drivers is conducted to subjectively evaluate the potential risks that drivers may face in various situations. Finally, validation of the model is conducted by comparing the accuracy with the typical risk assessment index, i.e., TTC and THW. Results demonstrate that the proposed approach is effective in evaluating the comprehensive driving risks by quantifying the influence factors of driving risks in dynamic environments.

Abstract:With the technological development of forward-looking sensors, researchers are exploring their use not only for advanced driver assistance systems but also to gain important pre-crash information. Based on this pre-crash information, if the occupant motion inside the vehicle structure can be predicted for the oncoming crash scenario, then an optimal restraint strategy can be planned before the crash. This paper introduces a two-step FEM simulation based methodology for predicting the occupant severity in head-on crash scenarios. In the first step, we simulate the vehicle level model with different impact positions and relative approach angles. The results of these simulations, linear velocities in the longitudinal and lateral direction and angular velocities (roll, pitch, and yaw) during in-crash phase are the loading conditions for next simulation step (occupant level). This step simulates the motion of the driver in different crash scenarios. In this paper, we investigate the head, neck, and chest injury risks from vehicle-to-vehicle crash both traveling at 50 kilometers per hour. Prediction of the head injury criterion, identifying the cases where additional deployment of side-airbags and discussion of injury criteria with contour plots are the main outcome of this paper.

Abstract:In order to evaluate roadside crash severity and help making decision on roadside safety improvement alternatives, this article proposes a roadside crash severity evaluation method based on vehicle kinematics metric during the crash: Acceleration Severity Index. Based on the field investigation on 1917 km of representative roads, roadside crash test standards and parameters were determined. A total of 59 crash scenarios, involving 5 typical roadside obstacles, 2 types of guardrails, 15 embankment slopes, and 3 types of vehicles (car, bus, and truck), were designed for simulated crash testing with VPG3.2 and LS-DYNA971 software. The x-, y-, and z-direction acceleration (or deceleration) curves of a test vehicle’s center of mass during each crash test were collected for the calculation of the Acceleration Severity Index values. The Fisher optimal partition algorithm was used to cluster the Acceleration Severity Index values to identify an appropriate number of roadside crash severity levels and the corresponding threshold values that demarcate these levels. The results showed that the roadside crash severity classification produced by Acceleration Severity Index–based method is consistent with handbook Guideline for Implementation of Highway Safety Enhancement Project . Therefore, when crash data are missing, crash test could be a feasible surrogate method for roadside crash severity evaluation.

Abstract:Based on the average human body size in China and the THUMS AM50 finite element model of the human body, the Kriging interpolation algorithm was used to model the Chinese 50th percentile human body, and the biological fidelity of the model was verified. We built three different types of passenger vehicle models, namely, sedan, sports utility vehicle (SUV), and multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), and used mechanical response analysis and finite element simulation to compare and analyze the dynamic differences and head injury differences between the Chinese 50th percentile human body and the THUMS AM50 model during passenger vehicle collisions. The results showed that there are obvious differences between the Chinese mannequin and THUMS in terms of collision time, collision position, invasion speed, and angle. When a sedan collided with the mannequins, the skull damage to the Chinese human body model was more severe, and when a sedan or SUV collided, the brain damage to the Chinese human body was more severe. The abovementioned results suggest that the existing C-NCAP pedestrian protection testing regulations may not provide the best protection for Chinese human bodies, and that the regulations need to be improved by combining collision damage mechanisms and the physical characteristics of Chinese pedestrians. This thorough investigation is positioned to shed light on the fundamental biomechanics and injury mechanisms at play. Furthermore, the amalgamation of clinically rooted translational and engineering research in the realm of traumatic brain injury has the potential to establish a solid foundation for discerning preventive methodologies. Ultimately, this endeavor holds the potential to introduce effective strategies aimed at preventing and safeguarding against traumatic brain injuries.

A novel method for the automated simulation of various vehicle collisions to estimate crash severity

Abstract:Objective: Vehicle collisions are described with the help of collision severity parameters such as energy equivalent speed (EES) and the collision-based change of velocity (delta-v). These serve as an input for injury outcome estimations through injury risk functions (IRF) or for the virtual assessment of active safety systems in case of a modified collision. A novel method was developed with the aim of simulating various vehicle collisions within a short time frame while ensuring the accuracy of the collision severity parameters.Methods: Previously developed three-dimensional EES models were used in this study. They were used to compute 2 D vehicle substitute models, which are deformed during a new, time-discrete method. By using fundamentals of mechanical impact calculation and vehicle kinematics, relevant collision severity parameters are calculated. These steps are executed in an own developed standalone tool named impactEES. The results obtained were verified against measured crash test data from the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) and the Technical Center of Allgemeiner-Deutscher-Automobil-Club (ADAC).Results: The novel method enables the automated computation of various car-to-car and car-to-object collisions. The output of impactEES includes the deformation area, EES, and delta-v. Furthermore, it includes the following time-discrete data for each vehicle: translational and angular accelerations, translational and angular velocities, and the position of the center of gravity in addition to the heading of the vehicle. Finally, without the need of highly sophisticated hardware, a single simulation of a collision between two vehicles can be calculated within only a few seconds including collision severity parameters. Based on the comparison of measured crash test data and results obtained from impactEES the mean percentage error (MPE) and its standard deviation (SD) were calculated for EES (MPE= - 2.0%, SD = 8.4%, n = 14) and delta-v (MPE= - 1.2%, SD = 14.2%, n = 18).Conclusions: The novel method allows for the 2 D computation of various car-to-car and car-to-object collisions. Using predefined IRF allows the assessment of injury probabilities relative to the change of collision severity parameters. Both can be used for the virtual assessment of injury mitigation capabilities of active safety systems and thus represent an important contribution to its targeted development.

Abstract:This study was designed to determine the success of various local anaesthesia techniques as assessed by the presence or absence of pain during restorative procedures performed by senior undergraduate dental students in a pedodontic clinic. Data gathered from the treatment of 151 patients by 43 students recorded the frequency of pain complaints during procedures for which local anaesthesia had been employed. It was found that 73% of the administrations were successful. The proportion of children who complained of pain during the operative procedure was significantly higher in those with a previous history of a painful dental experience.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Lower extremity injuries are the most frequent Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) 2 injury for drivers in frontal crashes. The objective was to reconstruct 11 real-world motor vehicle crashes (2 with AIS 2+ distal lower extremity injury and 9 without lower extremity injury) and to analyze the vehicle parameters and driver attributes that affect injury risk.METHODS: Eleven frontal crashes were reconstructed with a finite element simplified vehicle model (SVM) using a semi-automated optimization method. The SVM was tuned to each corresponding vehicle and the Total HUman Model for Safety (THUMS) Ver 4.01 was scaled and positioned in a baseline configuration to mimic the documented precrash driver posture. The event data recorder crash pulse was applied as the boundary condition for each case. Additionally, for the 2 cases with lower extremity injury, 120 simulations to quantify the uncertainty and response variation were performed varying the following parameters using a Latin hypercube design of experiment (DOE): seat track position, seatback angle, steering column angle, steering column position, and D-ring height. Injury metrics implemented within THUMS were calculated from the femur, tibia, and ankle and cross-compared among the 11 baseline cases using tibia index and multiple injury risk functions. Kinetic and kinematic data from the 120-simulation DOE were analyzed and fit to regression models to examine any causal relationship between occupant positioning and lower extremity injury risk.RESULTS: Of the 11 real-world crashes, both cases with lower extremity injuries resulted in elevated tibia axial forces and resultant bending moments, compared to the 9 cases without lower extremity injury. The average tibia index of the 2 cases with distal lower extremity injury (left: 1.79; right: 1.19) was higher than that in the 9 cases without lower extremity injury (left: 1.16, P =.024; right: 0.82, P =.024). An increased risk of AIS 2+ tibia shaft (33.6%), distal tibia and hindfoot (20.0%), as well as ankle malleolar (14.5%) fracture was also observed for the injured compared to the noninjured cases. Rearward seat track position, reclined seat back angle, and reduced seat height were correlated with elevated tibia axial force and increased tibia index, imposing additional lower extremity injury risk.CONCLUSIONS: This study provides a computational framework for assessing lower extremity injuries and elucidates the effect of precrash driver posture on lower extremity injury risk while accounting for vehicle parameters and driver attributes. Results from the study aid in the evaluation of real-world injury data, the understanding of factors contributing to injury risk, and the prevention of lower extremity injuries.

Preliminary injury risk estimation for occupants involved in frontal crashes by combining computer simulations and real crashes

Abstract:The fatality rate can be dramatically reduced with the help of emergency medical services. The purpose of this study was to establish a computational algorithm to predict the injury severity, so as to improve the timeliness, appropriateness, and efficacy of medical care provided. The computer simulations of full-frontal crashes with rigid wall were carried out using LS-DYNA and MADYMO under different collision speeds, airbag deployment time, and seatbelt wearing condition, in which a total of 84 times simulation was conducted. Then an artificial neural network is adopted to construct relevance between head and chest injuries and the injury risk factors; 37 accident cases with Event Data Recorder data and information on occupant injury were collected to validate the model accuracy through receiver operating characteristic analysis. The results showed that delta-v, seatbelt wearing condition, and airbag deployment time were important factors in the occupant’s head and chest injuries. When delta-v increased, the occupant had significantly higher level of severe injury on the head and chest; there is a significant difference of Head Injury Criterion and Combined Thoracic Index whether the occupant wore seatbelt. When the airbag deployment time was less than 20 ms, the severity of head and chest injuries did not significantly vary with the increase of deployment time. However, when the deployment time exceeded 20 ms, the severity of head and chest injuries significantly increased with increase in deployment time. The validation result of the algorithm showed that area under the curve = 0.747, p < 0.05, indicating a medium level of accuracy, nearly to previous model. The computer simulation and artificial neural network have a great potential for developing injury risk estimation algorithms suitable for Advanced Automatic Crash Notification applications, which could assist in medical decision-making and medical care.

Vehicle Motion Planning for Crash Mitigation in Unavoidable Collision Scenarios

Abstract:Motion planning in dynamic environment is crucial to the automated driving safety. In extremely emergency scenarios with unavoidable collisions, especially those with complex impact patterns, the potential crash risk should be well considered in motion planning. This paper proposes a motion planning algorithm for unavoidable collisions, which directly embeds a generalized crash severity index model to vehicle-to-vehicle collisions of multiple impact patterns. Firstly, the clothoid curve is used to sample the vehicle trajectory before collision, and a two-degree-of-freedom model is adopted to predict the vehicle poses corresponding to each sample path. Then, the crash severity index model is to estimate the potential crash severity of all sample paths. To improve the inferring time efficiency, a neural network is constructed and deployed to approximate the nonlinear severity model. Finally, the crash-severity-optimal trajectory is tracked through model predictive control method. Results show that by combining the braking and steering interventions for better crash severity reduction, the proposed strategy can achieve better mitigation effects than commonly-used collision-avoidance strategies. The deployment of real car experiment and sensitivity analysis demonstrate that the planning algorithm can guarantee real-time and reliably safe performances.
Study on driver's active emergency response in dangerous traffic scenes based on driving simulator

Abstract:Objective: A driver's active emergency response in dangerous traffic scenes consists of two parts, including reaction behavior and physiological state. In dangerous traffic scenes, the driver's active emergency response has an important impact on human collision injury. Clarifying the driver's active emergency response is an important prerequisite for the study of human collision injury under nonstandard posture. Therefore, this study investigates the driver's active emergency response in different inevitable collision scenes using driving simulator. Methods: A driving simulator with a high-speed camera system and human physiological signal acquisition system was first built. Then, three typical vehicle dangerous collision scenes were developed, including frontal collision, side collision, and rear-end collision. Finally, twenty participants (15 males and 5 females) were recruited for a driving experiment, and their active emergency responses were recorded and analyzed. Results: All subjects would rotate the steering wheel to the left or right in the active emergency state, and the rotation of the hand would also cause the subject's upper body to tilt in the same direction. The maximum angle for male subjects to rotate the steering wheel was 59.98°, while for the female subjects, it was 44.28°. In addition, the maximum grip force between the male subjects and the steering wheel was 280.5 N, compared to 192.5 N for female subjects. Compared to the female participants, the male participants not only have a greater rotation angle and a greater grip force on the steering wheel, but also have greater pressure on the brake pedal, and the foot moves quickly from the accelerator pedal to the brake pedal and presses the brake pedal. Conclusions: Drivers have different active emergency responses to different vehicle collision scenes. Quantitative statistics of driver's active emergency response will have important guiding significance for the analysis of the impact of human active emergency response on human injury characteristics in subsequent vehicle collision experiments.
