Abstract:An electrochemical carbon nanotube filter has been reported to be effective for the removal and electrooxidation of aqueous chemicals and microorganisms. Here, we investigate how carbon nanotube (CNT) chemical surface treatments including calcination to remove amorphous carbon, acid treatment to remove internal residual metal oxide, formation of surficial oxy-functional groups, and addition of Sb-doped SnO(2) particles affect the electrooxidative filter performance. The various CNT samples are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electrochemically evaluated by cyclic voltammetry, open circuit potential versus time analysis, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Voltammetry results indicate that the near CNT surface pH is at least two units lower than the bulk pH. The electrooxidative performance of the various CNT samples is evaluated with 1 mM of methyl orange (MO) in 100 mM sodium sulfate at a flow rate of 1.5 mL min(-1). At both 2 and 3 V, the efficacy of electrochemical filtration is observed to be function of CNT surface chemistry. The samples with the greatest electrooxidation were the calcinated then HCl-treated CNTs, i.e., the CNTs with the most surficial sp(2)-bonded carbon, and the Sb-SnO(2)-coated CNTs, i.e., the CNTs with the most electrocatalytic surface area. At 3 V applied voltage, these CNT samples are able to oxidize 95% of the influent MO within the liquid residence time of <1.2 s. The broader applicability of electrochemical filtration is evaluated by challenging the C-CNT-HCl and C-CNT-HNO(3) networks with various organics including methylene blue, phenol, methanol, and formaldehyde. At 3 V applied voltage, both CNTs are able to degrade a fraction of all the organics with the extent organic degradation dependent on both CNT and organic properties. The C-CNT-HCl network generally had the better oxidative performance than the C-CNT-HNO(3) network with an exception being the positively charged methylene blue. The extent of MO degradation, steady-state current, anode potential, effluent pH, and back pressure are also measured as a function of applied voltage (1-3 V) and CNT surface chemistry. Mass spectrometry of electrochemical CNT filter effluent at 2 and 3 V is utilized to evaluate plausible electrooxidation products. Energy consumption as compared to state-of-the-art electrodes and strategies to tailor the CNT surface for a specific target molecule are discussed.
Preparation and Characterization of the Carbon Nano Tubes Supporting Oxygen Electrode Material for PEMFC

Abstract:In this paper, carbon nano tubes(CNTs) were used as the support material of electrocatalyst for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The surficial structures of Pt/CNTs and Pt/C, which have various specific surface area, porosities, distribution of pore size and dispersion of active metals, were analyzed respectively. It was experimentally found that CNTs with typical mesoporous structures were more desirable for the dispersion of Pt metal granules. During the investigation on catalyst preparation, it was found that the support treated with HNO 3(40%) has more appropriate porous structure. It showed that Pt/CNTs could be a promising electrocatalyst for PEMFC application, and various factors may influence the surface characteristics of catalyst.
Oxidative purification of carbon nanotubes and its impact on catalytic performance in oxidative dehydrogenation reactions

Abstract:Oxidative purification with mild diluted HNO3 followed by NaOH washing lowers the amount of amorphous carbon attached to multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The graphitic structure improves remarkably by further annealing in argon at elevated temperatures, that is, 1173, 1573, and 1973 K. The influence of the purification treatment on the catalytic activity of the CNTs is investigated for the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of ethylbenzene and propane as probe reactions. All samples tend to approach an appropriately ordered structure and Raman analysis of the used samples displays a D/G band ratio of 0.95-1.42. Oxygen functionalities are partly removed by the annealing treatment and can be rebuilt to some extent by oxygen molecules in the ODH reactant flow. The presence of amorphous carbon is detrimental to the catalytic performance as it allows for unwanted functional groups occurring in parallel with the formation of the selective (di)ketonic active sites.
Effect of Chemical Oxidation on the Structure of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:In the present study, we report the systematic investigation of the effect of chemical oxidation on the structure of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) by using different oxidants. The oxidation procedure was characterized by using infrared spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The SWNTs were produced by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and oxidized with three kinds of oxidants: (1) nitric acid (2.6 M), (2) a mixture of concentrated sulfuric acid (98 wt %) and concentrated nitric acid (16 M) (v/v = 3/1) and (3) KMnO4. The results reveal that the different functional groups can be introduced when the SWNTs are treated with different oxidants. Refluxing in dilute nitric acid can be considered as a mild oxidation for SWNTs, introducing the carboxylic acid groups only at those initial defects that already exist. The abundance of the carboxylic acid groups generated with this oxidant remained constant along with the treating time. In contrast, sonication of SWNTs in H2SO4/HNO3 increased the incidence of carboxylic acid groups not only at initial defect sites but also at newly created defect sites along the walls of SWNTs. Compared to the two oxidants above, when KMnO4 in alkali was used as the oxidant, which is relatively mild, different amounts of −OH, −CO, and −COOH groups were introduced. The oxidation processes begin mainly with the oxidation of the initial defects that arise during the CVD growth of the SWNTs and are accompanied by processes that can be roughly divided into two steps: (1) the defect-generating step and (2) the defect-consuming step. Specifically, during the defect-generating step, the oxidants attack the graphene structure by electrophilic reactions and generate active sites such as −OH and −CO. This step depends on the oxidant's ability to generate −C−OH groups and to transform them into −CO groups. During the defect-consuming step, the graphene structure of the tube was destroyed by the oxidation of the generated active sites in step 1. The defect-consuming step mostly counts on the ability of the oxidant to etch/destroy the graphite-like structure around the already generated −CO and their neighborhood groups.

Abstract:Chemical oxidation is still the major approach to the covalent functionalization of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Theoretically, the defects on CNTs are more reactive than skeletal hexagons and should be preferentially oxidized, but conventional oxidation methods, e.g., HNO3/H2SO4 treatment, have poor reaction selectivity and inevitably consume the C=C bonds in the hexagonal lattices, leading to structural damage, pi-electrons loss and weight decrease. In this work, we realized the nondestructive covalent functionalization of CNTs by selective oxidation of the defects. In our method, potassium ferrate (K2FeO4)-O-VI was employed as an oxidant for CNTs in H2SO4 medium. The CNT samples, before and after K2FeO4/H2SO4 treatment, were characterized with colloid dispersibility, IR, Raman spectroscopy, FESEM and XPS. The results indicated that (i) CNTs could be effectively oxidized by Fe (VI) under mild condition (60 degrees C, 3 h), and hydrophilic CNTs with abundant surface COOH groups were produced; and (ii) Fe (VI) oxidation of CNTs followed a defect-specific oxidation process, that is, only the sp3-hybridized carbon atoms on CNT surface were oxidized while the C=C bonds remained unaffected. This selective/nondestructive oxidation afforded oxidized CNTs in yields of above 100 wt%. This paper shows that K2FeO4/H2SO4 is an effective, nondestructive and green oxidation system for oxidative functionalization of CNTs and probably other carbon materials as well. Quantitative Examination of Aqueous Ferrocyanide Oxidation in a Carbon Nanotube Electrochemical Filter: Effects of Flow Rate, Ionic Strength, and Cathode Material

Abstract:The unique conductivity, small diameter, and high specific surface area of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) make them suitable for a range of nontraditional electrode structures. For example, an electrochemically active CNT microfilter has been shown to be effective for water treatment. The forced convection through the 3D CNT electrode improves mass transfer relative to conventional 2D electrodes, but the effects of several solution and reactor parameters in this system are poorly understood because previous works focused on strongly sorbing organic species capable of undergoing several multielectron transfer reactions. Here, the use of Fe(CN)6 4–/3– as a model soluble and nonadsorbing redox system enabled a near complete accounting of the predominant electron transfer reactions of anodic Fe(CN)6 4– oxidation and cathodic water reduction to H2. Subsequently, the effects of liquid flow rate, electrolyte concentration, target molecule concentration, anode potential, and cathode material on anodic Fe(CN)6 4– oxidation kinetics and thermodynamics in an electrochemical filter were investigated. Electrochemical kinetics were observed to increase linearly with increasing flow rate, and electrolyte concentration had negligible effects in the flow configuration due to convective replenishment of Fe(CN)6 4– and electrolyte to the CNT surface. In the electron-transfer-limited regime ([Fe(CN)6 4–]0 = 15 mM), a rate constant for the oxidation of Fe(CN)6 4– was calculated to be in the range k et = 2332–3705 s–1 or (6–10) × 10–3 cm s–1. The use of a CNT network cathode furthermore enabled the cathodic reaction to proceed at a lower cell potential, indicating that the CNT network catalyzed water reduction. The total cell potential required for facile water reduction decreased from 1.6 V with the Ti cathode to 0.8 V with the CNT cathode, resulting in a total cell energy efficiency (>75%) that approached the current efficiency. Overall, the results quantitatively exemplify some of the advantages of using a 3D CNT electrode in the flow-through configuration.

Abstract:Air oxidation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was studied. CNTs were oxidized in air at different temperatures, and then were used in fabricating polarizable electrodes of electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs). Experiment showed that air oxidation could modify the intrinsic structure of individual CNTs and improve the dispersity of CNT powder. Specific capacitance of the polarizable electrodes in EDLCs based on oxidized CNTs were obviously improved, but the effects were influenced by the thermal annealing temperature.

Abstract:Adsorption of organic contaminants on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is a critical behavior in the environmental application of CNTs as sorbents and in the environmental risk assessment of both organic contaminants and CNTs. Oxidation of CNTs may introduce oxygen-containing groups on CNTs' surface and then alter the adsorption of organic contaminants. In this study, adsorption of polar and nonpolar organic compounds on four multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) containing varied amounts of surface oxygen-containing groups were investigated to examine the influence of CNTs' surface oxidation on adsorption. We observed that surface oxidation of MWCNTs reduced the surface area-normalized adsorption capacity of organic compounds significantly because of the competition of water molecules but did not alter the adsorption affinity. The interactions (i.e., hydrophobic effect, pi-pi bonds, and hydrogen bonds) and the interaction strength for adsorption of organic molecules on MWCNTs could not be altered by the surface oxidation of MWCNTs and thus were responsible for the unaltered adsorption affinity. In addition, the decrease of surface area-normalized adsorption capacity of the organic compound with more polarity and higher adsorption affinity by surface oxidation was less because of the heterogeneous nature of hydrophilic sites of MWCNTs' surface.
Electro-catalytic Oxidation of CO on Pt Catalyst Supported on Carbon Nanotubes Pretreated with Oxidative Acids

Abstract:Characteristics of nanosized Pt electro-catalyst deposited on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were studied with CO-stripping voltammogram and chronoamperometry measurements. The CNTs were pretreated by oxidation in HNO3, mixed HNO3+H2SO4 and H2SO4+K2Cr2O7 solution, respectively, to enable surface modification. Well-homogenized Pt particles (average size: ≈3nm) were loaded onto the pretreated CNT samples by a modified colloidal method. TEM, BET, FTIR and XRD techniques were used to characterize the physicochemical properties of the pretreated CNT samples. In the electro-oxidation of CO, all the Pt/CNT samples showed lower on-set as well as peak potentials than the conventional Pt/XC-72 electro-catalyst, indicating that the Pt/CNT samples were more resistant to CO poisoning and could be superior anode electro-catalyst for the proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Moreover, we found that the pretreatment of CNTs in mixed HNO3+H2SO4 solution was very beneficial for the performance enhancement of Pt/CNT electro-catalyst; the catalyst obtained as such gave the lowest peak potential and the highest catalytic activity for the electro-oxidation of CO. Larger amount of oxygen-containing functional groups, higher percentage of mesopores, and higher graphitic crystallinity of the pretreated CNTs were considered crucial for the performance enhancement, e.g., by strengthening the interaction between Pt nanoparticles and the CNT support and enhancing the mass diffusion in the electro-chemical reaction.
Kinetically Controlled Side-Wall Functionalization of Carbon Nanotubes by Nitric Acid Oxidation

Abstract:The nitric acid oxidation followed by sodium hydroxide washing was applied for functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), few-walled CNTs (FWCNTs), and multiwalled CNTs (MWCNTs). The surface functionalization of CNTs via acidic oxidation was studied by transmission electron microscopy, Raman scattering spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The oxidation of CNTs involves the exfoliation of functionalized carbon layers into smaller carbonaceous fragments (CF), which might influence the performance of composite materials based on modified CNTs. Optimizing oxidation time increased the selectivity to thermodynamically unstable functionalized CNTs. Thicker CNTs, including FWCNTs and MWCNTs., are better for high-density surface functionalization, due to higher structure stability. It was proposed that a rational selection of the oxidation process and type of CNTs is important for the applications involving CNT-related composite materials.
The Effect of Oxidation on Physicochemical Properties and Aqueous Stabilization of Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes:Comparison of Multiple Analysis Methods

Abstract:Surface oxidation can alter physicochemical properties of multiwalled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs) and influence their aqueous stabilization.Many techniques have been used to characterize the physicochemical properties and aqueous stabilization of MWCNTs.However,the relationship between the change in physicochemical property and the aqueous stabilization of MWCNTs merits more studies,and the multiple characterization techniques have not been well compared.This study systematically and comparatively investigated the effect of oxidation on the physicochemical properties and aqueous stabilization of MWCNTs using multiple analysis methods.Increased surface area,disclosed tube ends,defects on the sidewalls,disruption of the electronic structure,and removal of metal catalysts and amorphous carbon were observed for the oxidized MWCNTs(o-MWCNTs) using the multipoint Brunauer-Emmett-Teller(BET) method,transmission electron microscope observation,Raman spectroscopy,UV-Vis spectroscopy,and thermogravimetric analysis.An oxidation-time-dependent increase in oxygen content of the MWCNTs was verified by the methods of elemental analysis,mass difference calculation,and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS).Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,XPS,and the Boehm titration were employed to study the functionalities on the MWCNT surfaces.Despite the limitations of these techniques,the results indicated that the dramatic increase in carboxyl groups was mainly responsible for the significant increase in oxygen content after the oxidation.The dissociation of the grafted functional groups increased electronegativity of the o-MWCNTs and facilitated the aqueous stabilization of o-MWCNTs through electrostatic repulsions.The oxidation affected the UV-Vis absorbance of MWCNT suspensions.The absorbances at 800 nm of the stabilized MWCNT suspensions had a good correlation with the MWCNT concentrations and could be used to quantify the MWCNT suspensions.The findings of this work are expected to boost the research on carbon nanotubes and their environmental behaviors.
Controlled electrochemical oxidation for enhancing the capacitance of carbon nanotube composites

Abstract:The electrochemical oxidation, a promising method to enhance the capacitance of carbon nanotubes (CNT) composite electrodes and to fabricate ultrahigh capacitors based on CNT, was discussed. Measurement of d.c. capacitance and equivalent series resistance (ESR) of EDLC was presented. It was concluded that the electrochemical oxidation of carbon nanotube composite electrodes increases their capacitance by over a factor of two, due to a combination of amorphous carbon removal and the addition of functional groups. The acid oxidation of a CNT composite electrode and the electrochemical oxidation of a carbon fiber electrode enhanced the specific capacitances by 40%-70%. The ESR of capacitor units increased a little (under 15%) after electrolytic oxidation.

Abstract:Based on electrochemical anodic oxidation, an innovative technique was developed to efficiently obtain the uniform catalyst coating on continuous carbon fibers. Through systematic investigation on the effect of electrochemical modified strength on the physical and chemical characteristics of carbon fiber surface, catalyst particles and the morphology of CNTs-grafted carbon fibers, tensile strength of multi-scale reinforcement and the interlaminar shear strength of its reinforced composites, the electrochemical modification process on carbon fibre surface was optimized. The results show that the morphology and distribution of catalyst particles not only affect the morphology of CNTs deposited on the surface of carbon fibres, but also affect the mechanical properties of multi-scale reinforcement and its reinforced composites of CNTs-grafted carbon fibers.
Surface Oxidation of Activated Electrospun Carbon Nanofibers and Their Adsorption Performance for Benzene, Butanone and Ethanol

Abstract:Carbone nanofibers prepared by electrospinning and subsequent steam activation were oxidized by treatment in HNO3 and HNO3/H2SO4 mixture. Surface morphology and degree of graphitic structure of oxidized nanofibers are affected mildly by acid oxidation according to SEM and Raman measurement. Nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms demonstrate decrease in specific surface area and pore volume of carbon nanofibers after oxidation. XPS spectra exhibit that oxidized nanofibers possess higher surface oxygen content than pristine nanofibers. Higher water adsorption capacities on oxidized nanofibers determined by water adsorption isotherms suggest the improvement of surface polarity and hydrophilicity. Furthermore, adsorption isotherms of benzene, butanone and ethanol show that surface oxidation enhances the adsorption tendency for butanone and ethanol on nanofibers due to increased surface polarity, indicating that the adsorption selectivity to polar organic compounds is improved. Abstract:The effect of CO2 oxidized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the performance of electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs) was studied. CO2 oxidation increased the specific area and improved the dispersity of CNTs. Specific capacitance of the polarizable electrodes in EDLCs based on the oxidized CNTs were obviously improved and the maximum specific capacitance of 47 F/g was obtained. CO2 oxidizing CNTs is hence an effective way to improve the performances of EDLCs based on the CNT electrodes.

Abstract:The oxidation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by hydroxyl radical produced by pulsed O2 plasma in a gas–liquid hybrid discharge reactor was conducted with the goal of enhancing their solubility and improving the yield of H2O2 in electro-Fenton. Data from the characterization experiments showed that oxygen bearing groups (COH, COO, COOH, CO) were formed on the surface of CNTs. The possible mechanism indicated that introduction of oxygen bearing groups onto CNTs could be attributed to the attacks by hydroxyl radical. The oxidized CNTs were easily dispersed in ethanol. The H2O2 yield on the original CNTs was 102mg/L at −0.85V after 90min; in contrast, H2O2 yield on CNTs-15 reached 146mg/L under the same conditions, resulting from the enhancement of the accessibility of O2 on CNTs. In the electro-Fenton, the removal of methyl orange on the original CNTs was around 40%, and it increased to 95% on CNTs-15.
Tracing the Chemical Oxidation Process of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes by Silver Nanoparticles

Abstract:We proposed here a simple technique for tracing the chemical oxidation process of single-walled carbon (2.6 mol . L-1) was used as oxidant for introducing carboxylic acid groups at the end or surface of the tubes. Based on the interaction between -COOH groups and silver nanoparticles, the oxidation procedure can be traced successfully. The results suggest that refluxing of SWNTs in HNO3 may introduce carboxylic acid groups mostly at the original defect sites and few defect is newly created along the SWNTs walls.
Surface modification of carbon fibers by anodic oxidation

Abstract:The surface of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fibers (CFs)was modified by anodic oxidation and characterized by atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. It was found that the roughness and specific surface area of the carbon fibers were increased after oxidation treatment. The contents of hydroxyl and carbonyl groups of the treated PAN-CFs were higher than those of the untreated ones. The loss tangent peak value (tanδ_ max ) of the treated carbon fiber reinforced epoxy resin composites (CFRP) declined compared with the untreated ones, and the glass transition temperature of the epoxy resin was increased. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the CFRP can be increased by 25% under an appropriate oxidative treatment,and the loss of tensile strength was only 5%. The interfacial adhesion parameters A and α were quantitatively evaluated, and their values were consistent with the results of ILSS of CFRP.

Abstract:As a widely investigated category of non-precious metal electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), metal-N-x-C materials are gaining increasing attention both in the rational synthesis of catalysts and in the study of structure-activity relationships. Carbon supports are important to the performance of these catalysts toward the ORR. Graphene has been used in many electrocatalysts due to its notable characteristics, such as large specific surface area, and high conductivity, but it is further limited by the tendency to agglomerate. Here, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were employed to effectively suppress the agglomeration of graphene. The binary carbon complex was loaded with iron phthalocyanine (FePc), achieving better activity than commercialized Pt/C (30 wt%) with a positive shift of half-wave potential of 20 mV after heat-treatment at 750 degrees C. SEM, TEM, XPS and XAS measurements revealed that the insertion of CNTs not only suppressed the stacking of graphene layers, but also enhanced the catalytic performance during the RRDE and Zn-air battery tests in alkaline electrolyte by exposing more ORR active sites in the Fe-Nx structure. Structural control of highly oxidized carbon nanotube networks for high electrochemical performance

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are one of the most suitable candidates for electrochemical applications because of their high electrical conductivity and large specific surface area. However, the bundling behavior of single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) due to π–π interaction limits their solution processability and structural control. Herein, we report a fabrication method for highly conductive and porous CNT network films exhibiting a high electrochemical performance in aqueous media. This was achieved through the filtration of a dispersant-free dispersion of oxidized carbon nanotubes by less defective chlorate-based oxidation and thermal deoxygenation in air. To increase the proportion of mesopores in the film, oxidized long multi-walled CNTs (Ox-LMWCNTs) were incorporated into Ox-SWCNT networks. The Ox-SWCNT/Ox-LMWCNT (1/1 wt.%) hybrid film exhibited a large surface area of 492 m2/g, which decreased to 225 m2/g after thermal treatment at 200 °C in air with increasing electrical conductivity up to 29,500 S/m. In particular, the proportion of mesopores increased from 65 to 89%. The enhanced electrochemical capacity of the hybrid films (147 F/g and 99% retention at 10 A/g) could be attributed to the increased mesopores and enhanced electrical conductivity of LMWCNTs after thermal deoxygenation even in air.Highly conductive and porous CNT network films exhibiting a high electrochemical performance in aqueous media were fabricated through the filtration of a dispersant-free dispersion of oxidized carbon nanotubes by less defective chlorate-based oxidation and thermal deoxygenation in air.Download : Download high-res image (113KB)Download : Download full-size image
