Abstract:Heterostructured semiconductor nanostructures have provoked great interest in the areas of energy, environment and catalysis. Herein, we report a novel hierarchical Ag3PO4/TiO2 heterostructure consisting of nearly spherical Ag3PO4 particles firmly coupled on the surface of TiO2 nanofibers (NFs). The construction of Ag3PO4/TiO2 heterostructure with tailored morphologies, compositions and optical properties was simply achieved via a facile and green synthetic strategy involving the electrospinning and solution-based processes. Owing to the synergetic effects of the components, the resulting hybrid heterostructures exhibited much improved visible light photocatalytic performance, which could degrade the RhB dye completely in 7.5 min. In addition, the coupling of Ag3PO4 particles with UV-light-sensitive TiO2 NFs enabled full utilization of solar energy and less consumption of noble metals, significantly appealing for their practical use in new energy sources and environmental issues. The developed synthetic strategy was considered to be applicable for the rational design and construction of other heterostructured catalysts. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this study, a narrow band gap semiconductor ZnFe2O4 is prepared first and then a wide band gap semiconductor ZnO is used to modify it by using hydrothermal method under the participation of the chelating agent nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), which will be removed in the process of high temperature baking. The structure and composition of ZnFe2O4/ZnO heterojunction were characterized by using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS). In order to improve the photocatalytic activity of ZnFe2O4/ZnO heterojunction under visible light irradiation Ag nanoparticles were loaded on its surface by using a very simple and special method namely silver mirror reaction at room temperature without agitation. The methyl orange (MO) was taken as model dyes to illustrate the photocatalytic performance of synthesized products on visible light irradiation. Maximum degradation of 84% for MO was achieved when one 85 W ordinary household energy-saving lamp was used as light source and ZnFe2O4/ZnO/Ag as multicomponent photocatalyst.
Interfacial Engineering Regulating Electronic Structure of Homologous S-scheme Co3O4@C-TiO2 Heterojunction for Enhanced Fenton-like Reaction Activity

Abstract:MOF-on-MOF (ZIF-67@MIL-125) derived S-scheme Co3O4@C-TiO2 (Co@Ti) homologous heterojunction is fabricated with a precisely regulated d-band center by constructing tight interface to enhance the Fenton-like activity. The regulation of d-band center of Co@Ti enhances the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) adsorption and the electron transfer rate, boosting the chloroquine phosphate (CQ) degradation rate constant by more than 20 times. Moreover, the self-made reactor adopting Co@Ti/graphite felt (GF) as immoblized catalyst accomplished long-term and continuous 100.0% CQ degradation efficiency in the simulated pulluted aqueous solution formulated from tap water up to 168.0h. For the first time, the newly-developed feature-based molecular networking (FBMN) technique is applied to analyze the intermediate products of CQ, which improved the efficiency and accuracy in analyzing intermediate products of various micropollutants. This work provides valuable guidance to regulate electronic structure of the catalyst by constructing MOF-on-MOF derived homologous heterojunctions with tight interface for enhanced Fenton-like ability toward water purification.

Abstract:Judicious interfacial-, crystalline-and structural-engineering of plasmonic metal-semiconductor nanocomposites is key to harnessing their plasmonic functions for enhancing solar energy conversion. In this work, metal@semiconductor core-shell nanocrystals with atomically organized interface, quasi-monocrystalline shell and diverse controllable structures/morphologies, which are hardly tractable by conventional synthetic strategies, are accessed by developing an aqueous cation exchange method. The combined studies including Mid-IR femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy measurements show that the superior metal-semiconductor interface attained by the presented method can greatly promote the extraction of hot electrons from metal to semiconductor (the quantum yield of hot electron injection was estimated at similar to 48%) in comparison with the nanostructures bearing unoptimized interfaces. Thus produced metal@semiconductor nanocrystals give 2-3 orders of magnitude enhancement in photocatalytic H-2 evolution activity relative to their counterparts accessed by conventional methods.

Abstract:We report the large-scale synthesis of monodisperse Ag nanoparticles and their homogeneous assembly into TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNAs) for enhancing the visible-light photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) activity of the photoanodes. Electron beam irradiation reduction was used to synthesize monodisperse mesoporous Ag nanoparticles, composed of smaller nanocrystals, with the aid of PVP surfactant. Ag nanoparticles exhibit an absorption band centered at 410nm, originating from localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). To explore LSPR effects on the visible-light PEC performance of TNAs, we prepared defect-sensitized TNAs by anodic oxidization, followed by a poor-oxygen annealing treatment to induce a wide range of visible-light response owing to the incorporation of Ti3+ defects. A vacuum-assisted filling method was used to assemble Ag nanoparticles into the defect-sensitized TNAs. Compared with unfilled TNAs, a 2.5-fold enhancement in the visible-light PEC activity was observed in the composite photoanodes, which is attributed to LSPR-induced absorption enhancement in a wavelength range of 400–450nm, as well as to the effective suppression of the recombination of photoexcited electrons and holes through the Ag-TiO2 Shockley junction.

Abstract:The challenge of synergistically optimizing different mechanisms limits the further improvement of plasmon-mediated photocatalytic activities. In this work, the CdS/Au-Ag/B-TiO 2 photocatalyst, combining a heterojunction structure with localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), is prepared by a high-temperature hydrogen reduction and hot solvent method. The novel synergistic interaction at the interface between the electric field and the plasmon electromagnetic field drives effective charge separation with improved photocatalytic efficiency. The Cd3Ti2 catalyst exhibits the highest photocatalytic activity, and the H 2 generation efficiency under the full solar spectrum is 15.97 mmol⋅h −1 ⋅g −1 with good stability as high as 81.3% in 24 h cycles. The CH 4 and CO precipitation performances are achieved at 14.2 μmol⋅h −1 ⋅g −1 and 113.9 μmol⋅h −1 ⋅g −1 , respectively, in the CO 2 RR process. The design of the synergistic mechanism of the dual electric field offers an important development in the field of plasma-mediated photoredox catalysis.

Abstract:In this work, a new class of heterostructure photocatalyst has been fabricated, which silver/silver chloride nanocubes are well-dispersed on titanium dioxide nanofibers by means of a facile precipitation process combined with photoreduction method. This sort of heterostructure shows an excellent photocatalytic activity superior to the pure TO2 nanofibers, Ag/AgCl powder and Ag/TiO2 nanofibers for decomposing organic contaminants driven by visible light. The improved photocatalytic activity might be due to the surface plasmon resonance effect of Ag and the formation of heterojunction between Ag, AgCl and TiO2, which can effectively enhance visible light absorption and accelerate the charge separation and transfer. Significantly, the multiple cycle experiments for repeated use have proved that the catalyst is stable, segregative and recyclable. Finally, a possible mechanism related to the charge separation and the photocatalytic degradation of organics is also provided. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Semiconductor-based photocatalysts innovation and heterojunction design incorporating novel materials have shed light on the enhancement of the photoelectrochemical (PEC) performances concerning energy fields, among which the plasmonic metal/semiconductor nanostructure raised extensive research attentions due to further PEC performance enhancement. In this work, an innovatively sandwiched structure composed of Ta3N5 nanorods (NRs)/ultrathin TiO2/Au Nanoparticles (NPs) was designed with successive PEC enhancement. The successful combination between the Ta3N5 nanorods and the dielectric TiO2 layer represented carriers’ migration, in addition with the heterojunction between TiO2 and Au NPs contributed to the synergistically suppression of the charge carriers’ recombination. Au NPs could further serve as the plasmonic absorber underlying their localized surface plasma resonance (LSPR) effect, expanding the light absorption over the whole visible range, and inducing hot electrons injection to the TiO2 layer effectively. The hierarchical performance improvement via surface plasmon enhanced photoelectrochemical activity in the well-designed heterostructure propose strong potential for the development of novel photocatalysts.

Abstract:A ternary Ag/AgCl/Bi2MoO6 plasmonic photocatalyst was successfully fabricated through a two-step synthesis method. The obtained samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The DRS results showed that the visible light absorption of the Ag/AgCl/ Bi2MoO6 composite had been greatly enhanced owing to the surface plasmonic resonance (SPR) of Ag-0 particles. The SEM and TEM images showed that the obtained flower-like Bi2MoO6 microspheres were composed of nanoplates, on the surface of which Ag/AgCl particles were distributed. In the photocatalytic degradation of dyes, Ag/AgCl/Bi2MoO6 photocatalysts exhibited significantly enhanced activities compared with Bi2MoO6. It was also found that the components of Ag/AgCl/Bi2MoO6 have a great influence on the activity. Controlled experiments proved that the degradation of pollutants over Ag/AgCl/Bi2MoO6 was mainly ascribed to the strong oxidation ability of photo-generated holes. On the basis of band structure analysis and active species trapping experimental results, a photocatalytic mechanism is also proposed.

Embedding Plasmonic Metal into Heterointerface of MOFs-Encapsulated Semiconductor Hollow Architecture for Boosting CO2 Photoreduction

Abstract:Coupling hollow semiconductor with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) holds great promise for constructing high-efficient CO2 photoreduction systems. However, energy band mismatch between them makes it difficult to exert their advantages to maximize the overall photocatalytic efficiency, since that the blockage of desirable interfacial charge transfer gives rise to the enrichment of photoelectrons and CO2 molecules on the different locations. Herein, an interfacial engineering is presented to overcome this impediment, based on the insertion of plasmonic metal into the heterointerfaces between them, forming a stacked semiconductor/metal@MOF photocatalyst. Experimental observations and theoretical simulations validate the critical roles of embedded Au in maneuvering the charge separation/transfer and surface reaction: (i) bridges the photoelectron transfer from hollow CdS (H-CdS) to ZIF-8; (ii) produces hot electrons and shifts them to ZIF-8; (iii) induces the formation of ZIF-8 defects in promoting the CO2 adsorption/activation and transformation to CO with low energy barriers. Consequently, the as-prepared H-CdS/Au@ZIF-8 with optimal ZIF-8 thickness exhibits distinctly boosted activity and superb selectivity in CO production as compared with H-CdS@ZIF-8 and other counterparts. This work provides protocols to take full advantages of components involved for enhanced solar-to-chemical energy conversion efficiency of hybrid artificial photosynthetic systems through rationally harnessing the charge transfer between them.

Abstract:Noble metal nanostructures can produce the surface plasmon resonance under appropriate photoexcitation, which can be used to promote or facilitate chemical reactions, as well as photocatalytic materials, due to their strong plasmon resonance in the visible light region. In the current work, Ag/Au nanoislands (NIs) and Ag NIs/Au film composite systems were designed, and their thermocatalysis performance was investigated using luminescence of Eu3+ as a probe. Compared with Ag NIs, the catalytic efficiency and stability of surface plasmons of Ag/Au NIs and Ag NIs/Au film composite systems were greatly improved. It was found that the metal NIs can also generate strong localized heat at low temperature environment, enabling the transition of NaYF4:Eu3+ to Y2O3: Eu3+, and anti-oxidation was realized by depositing gold on the surface of silver, resulting in the relative stability of the constructed complex.

Abstract:A novel metal?organic framework (MOF)-derived rodlike AgCl/Ag/In2O3 plasmonic photocatalyst has been successfully prepared by electrostatic self-assembly, co-precipitation, in-situ photoreduction, and calcination. The photocatalytic activity of the samples was systematically investigated by photocatalytic tetracycline (TC) oxidation and Cr(VI) reduction under visible light irradiation. Among the as-prepared samples, AgCl/Ag/In2O3-2 displayed the most effective photocatalytic activity. For photocatalytic TC oxidation, the apparent rate constant of AgCl/Ag/In2O3-2 was 0.5036 min-1, which was 2.7, 6.5, and 1.8 times higher than that of In2O3 (0.1845 min-1), AgCl/In2O3 (0.1544 min-1) and Ag/In2O3 (0.2850 min-1), respectively. In addition, AgCl/Ag/In2O3-2 also exhibited the highest activity for photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction, and the photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction rate of AgCl/Ag/In2O3-2 in 3hrs could reach 94.8%. The superior photocatalytic activity was due to the enhanced absorption in the visible light region caused by localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and the efficient interfacial charge migration and separation in AgCl/Ag/In2O3 samples. Moreover, the intermediates formed in the photocatalytic TC oxidation were identified by GC?MS. Finally, a series of characterizations and simulations (density functional theory, cambridge serial total energy package, and finite difference time domain) were carried out to demonstrate the plasmonic Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism.

Abstract:α-Fe2O3/porous g-C3N4 (α-Fe2O3/PCN) photocatalysts were fabricated via a facile and green method. Structural characterization indicated α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles were successfully loaded onto PCN. The α-Fe2O3/PCN nanocomposites were proven durable with significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity for Rhodamine B photodegradation than the single components under visible light irradiation. The improved photoactivity was mainly attributed to the broadened visible light absorption, enriched active sites, and formation of α-Fe2O3/PCN heterojunction that addressed the recombination of photoinduced electrons and holes. The α-Fe2O3/PCN hybrids also showed high recyclability and chemical stability.

Abstract:Awide range of light absorption and rapid electron-hole separation are desired for efficient photocatalysis. Herein, on the basis of a semiconductor-like metal-organic framework (MOF), a Pt@MOF/Au catalyst with two types of metal-MOF interfaces integrates the surface plasmon resonance excitation of Au nanorods with a Pt-MOF Schottky junction, which not only extends the light absorption of the MOF from the UV to the visible region but also greatly accelerates charge transfer. The spatial separation of Pt and Au particles by the MOF further steers the formation of charge flow and expedites the charge migration. As a result, the Pt@MOF/Au presents an exceptionally high photocatalytic H-2 production rate by water splitting under visible light irradiation, far superior to Pt/MOF/Au, MOF/Au and other counterparts with similar Pt or Au contents, highlighting the important role of each component and the Pt location in the catalyst.

Abstract:The plasmon resonance effect of metal nanoparticles (NPs) offers a promising route to improve the solar energy conversion efficiency of semiconductors. In this study, it is revealed that hot electrons generated by the plasmon resonance effect of Au NPs tend to inject into the surface states instead of the conduction band of Fe2O3 photoanodes, and then severe surface recombination occurs. Such an electron-transfer process seems to be independent of external applied potentials, but is sensitive to metal-semiconductor interface properties. Passivating the surface states of Fe2O3 with a noncatalytic Al2O3 layer can construct an effective resonant energy-transfer interface between Ti-doped Fe2O3 (Ti-Fe2O3) and Au NPs. In such a Ti-Fe2O3/Al2O3/Au electrode configuration, the enhanced photoelectrochemical (PEC) water-splitting performance can be attributed to the following two factors: 1)in the non-light-responsive wavelength range of Au NPs, both the relaxing Fermi pinning effect of the Al2O3 passivation layer and the higher work function of Au enlarge band bending; thus promoting the charge separation; and 2)in the light-responsive wavelength range of Au NPs, the effective resonant energy transfer contributes to light harvesting and conversion. The interface manipulation proposed herein may provide a new route to design efficient plasmonic PEC devices for energy conversion.
Hollow flower-like polyhedral α-Fe2O3/Defective MoS2/Ag Z-scheme heterojunctions with enhanced photocatalytic-Fenton performance via surface plasmon resonance and photothermal effects

Abstract:Hollow Polyhedral superstructures can capture light effectively and have adjustable composite composition, which is useful for constructing Z-scheme systems. Here, rational design of hollow flower-like polyhedral α-Fe2O3/defective MoS2/Ag Z-Scheme heterojunctions is described, using polyhedral α-Fe2O3 as the template and via a one-pot hydrothermal and postdeposition strategy. The hollow flower-like polyhedral heterojunctions utilize multiple reflections of light in the hollow structure to achieve enhanced photocatalytic activity. Defective MoS2 acts as a link between α-Fe2O3 and Ag nanoparticles, providing a great deal of active sites and broadening the photoresponse region. Because of the enhancement of light absorption and surface plasma resonance of Ag, α-Fe2O3/defective MoS2/Ag has significant photothermal effect. The photogenerated carriers can be effectively separated by the construction of a Z-scheme system. Importantly, photocatalytic-Fenton degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol and salicylic acid over hollow flower-like polyhedral α-Fe2O3/defective MoS2/Ag is higher than that of α-Fe2O3 and α-Fe2O3/defective MoS2.

Abstract:Plasmonic noble metal nanoparticles have emerged as a promising material in sensitizing wide-bandgap semiconductors for visible-light photocatalysis. Conventional methods in constructing such heterocatalysts suffer from either poor control over the size of the metal nanoparticles or inefficient charge transfer through the metal/semiconductor interface, which limit their photocatalytic activity. To solve this problem, in this work we construct Au/TiO2 photocatalysts by depositing presynthesized colloidal Au nanoparticles with well-controlled sizes to TiO2 nanocrystals and then removing capping ligands on the Au surface through a delicately designed ligand-exchange method, which leads to close Au/TiO2 Schottky contact after a mild annealing process. Benefiting from this unique synthesis strategy, the obtained photocatalysts show superior activity to conventionally prepared photocatalysts in dye decomposition and water-reduction hydrogen production under visible-light illumination. This study not only opens up new opportunities in designing photoactive materials with high stability and enhanced performance for solar energy conversion but also provides a potential solution for the well-recognized challenge in cleaning capping ligands from the surface of colloidal catalyst nanoparticles.
