Abstract:Copper cobalt composite oxide catalysts have been prepared by co-precipitation method. The prepared samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectra and nitrogen adsorption to determine the specific surface areas (S-BET). The catalytic activity and stability of samples were investigated for CO oxidation by using a microreactor-GC system. The results indicate that the copper cobalt composite oxide catalysts exhibited obviously higher catalytic activity for CO oxidation than that of individual CuO or Co3O4 with CO total conversion at 80 degrees C and their stability was quite well. The catalytic activity of the catalysts prepared by co-precipitation increases by increasing the calcination temperature from 150 to 200 degrees C and decreases from 200 to 500 degrees C. The effect of the volume of NaOH (2.0 mol/L), ageing time, calcination temperature, calcination time, the molar ratios of copper to cobalt and the specific surface areas on the catalytic activity of the catalysts was investigated in this paper.

Abstract:Copper iron composite oxide catalysts have been prepared by co-precipitation method. The catalytic activity and stability of the catalysts on CO oxidation were evaluated by using a microreactor-GC system. The results indicated that the copper iron composite oxide catalysts exhibited obviously high stability and catalytic activity on CO oxidation at low temperature. The effect of the calcination temperature, the molar ratios of copper to iron, the specific surface areas and the particle sizes on the catalytic activity of the catalysts was investigated in this paper.

Abstract:CeO2 nanocomposites modified by CuO are successfully synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. The influence of different Cu contents on the crystal structure, morphology, surface element valence, specific surface area, and material reduction temperature has been characterized by many different technical characterization means of XRD, SEM, TEM, Raman, XPS, specific surface area measurement and temperature programmed control under hydrogen, respectively. With the increasing of Cu metal content, the grain size tends to decrease and specific surface area of the sample tends to increase. The CO catalytic oxidation performance of CuO–CeO2 nanocomposites is studied by gas chromatography. Compared with pure CeO2, the CuO–CeO2 nanocomposite catalysts showed more active catalytic performance. The temperature with catalyst rate of 50% in all CuO–CeO2 nanocomposite catalysts for CO conversion is relatively low (77 < T50 < 172 °C). In all as-prepared nanocatalysts, the CuO–CeO2 nanocomposite catalyst with 30 wt% Cu plays the best catalytic activity and the temperature of 50% CO conversion could be down to 77 °C. The introduction of transition metal element Cu could facilitate the interaction of the material surface, promoting the generation of oxygen vacancy, so as to improve the conversion efficiency of CuO modified CeO2 nanocomposite for CO catalytic oxidation at low temperature.

Abstract:Co3O4/CeO2 mixed oxides were prepared by coprecipitation–oxidation, homogeneous precipitation, and complexation–combustion methods. The catalysts were used to catalyze low-temperature CO oxidation under dry and humid conditions. The Co3O4/CeO2 catalyst that was prepared by the coprecipitation–oxidation method followed by calcination at 538 K exhibited excellent activity and good resistance to water vapor poisoning. Remarkably, CO conversion of 99% was achieved at a temperature as low as 196 K and was maintained for more than 400 min under dry condition. When the reaction was carried out at 298 K, CO conversion of 94% was obtained after running the reaction for 2400 min. Even when 3.1% steam was added, CO conversion of 79% could be maintained after 2400 min time-on-stream at 383 K. It is suggested that the strong interaction between Co3O4 and CeO2 is closely related to the preparation route and calcination temperature and plays a crucial role in the CO oxidation over the Co3O4/CeO2 catalysts.
Comparative study of CuO/Ce0.7Sn0.3O2, CuO/CeO2 and CuO/SnO2 catalysts for low-temperature CO oxidation

Abstract:CuO/Ce0.7Sn0.3O2, CuO/CeO2 and CuO/SnO2 catalysts were prepared using impregnation methods. The catalysts were characterized by means of H2-TPR, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and CO-TPD studies. CuO/Ce0.7Sn0.3O2 catalysts have three reduction peaks, α, β, and γ. The α peak is attributed to the reduction of CuO and Sn4+ species on the surface of Ce0.7Sn0.3O2, β peak to the reduction of bulk SnO2 and surface Ce4+, γ peak to the reduction of bulk CeO2. Only a small amount of CuO (6%) is needed to form the active site for CO oxidation, and the excess CuO forms bulk CuO particles which contribute little to the activity. Combining the results of CO-TPD, XRD and catalytic activity measurements, we propose that the well-dispersed CuO, which can adsorb CO, is responsible for low-temperature CO oxidation. The bulk CuO that cannot adsorb CO contributes little to the oxidation activity. Among the supported CuO catalysts, a synergistic interaction between CuO and Ce0.7Sn0.3O2 makes the reduced CuO/Ce0.7Sn0.3O2 catalyst easily oxidized, thus it can easily supply active species. This is responsible for the highest CO oxidation activity at low-temperature.

Abstract:CuO-based catalysts are usually used for CO oxidation owing to their low cost and excellent catalytic activities. In this study, a series of metal oxide (La2O3, Fe2O3, PrO2, Sm2O3, and MnO2)-doped CuO-based catalysts with mesoporous Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 support were simply prepared by the incipient impregnation method and used directly as catalysts for CO catalytic oxidation. These mesoporous catalysts were systematically characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), N2 physisorption, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersed spectroscopy (EDS) mapping, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and H2 temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR). It was found that the CuO and the dopants were highly dispersed among the mesoporous framework via the incipient impregnation method, and the strong metal framework interaction had been formed. The effects of the types of the dopants and the loading amounts of the dopants on the low-temperature catalytic performances were carefully studied. It was concluded that doped transition metal oxides could regulate the oxygen mobility and reduction ability of catalysts, further improving the catalytic activity. It was also found that the high dispersion of rare earth metal oxides (PrO2, Sm2O3) was able to prevent the thermal sintering and aggregation of CuO-based catalysts during the process of calcination. In addition, their presence also evidently improved the reducibility and significantly reduced the particle size of the CuO active sites for CO oxidation. The results demonstrated that the 15CuO-3Fe2O3/M-Ce80Zr20 catalyst with 3 wt. % of Fe2O3 showed the best low-temperature catalytic activity toward CO oxidation. Overall, the present Fe2O3-doped CuO-based catalysts with mesoporous nanocrystalline Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 solid solution as support were considered a promising series of catalysts for low-temperature CO oxidation.

Abstract:In this work, a series of the Cu2O/CuO hollow sphere heterojunction catalysts with various Cu+/Cu2+ ratios were designed and synthesized to improve the low-temperature catalytic activity of CO oxidation. The physicochemical properties of all the catalysts were characterized by the SEM, TGA, N2-physisorption, XRD, FT-IR, XPS, and H2-TPR. The results revealed that the Cu2O hollow sphere catalyst had the large specific surface area due to the formation of the hollow structure, which could provid more accessible active sites for the gaseous reactants. Meanwhile, the Cu2O/CuO hollow sphere heterojunction catalysts possessed high concentration of the surface oxygen vacancies and further promoted the adsorption and activation of O2. As a result, the apparent activation energy of the CO oxidation was decreased and thus low-temperature activity of the CO oxidation was finally promoted. Therefore, the Cu2O/CuO hollow sphere heterojunction catalysts were considered as a series of high-efficient catalyst candidates for CO oxidation with promising low-temperature performance.

Abstract:Copper oxides have attracted great attention in the oxidation of CO due to their high activity at low temperatures. In this work, novel CuO/Cu2O heterojunction catalysts for low-temperature CO oxidation was prepared via hydrothermal in-situ oxidizing in H2O2. Based on studies of surface composition and the corresponding catalytic activities, the CuO/Cu2O catalysts contain rich oxygen vacancies (OVs), which improve the activation and migration ability of O2. The coupling effect between OVs and heterojunction reduces the activation energy of CO oxidation, leading the temperature of CO completed oxidation temperature from 250 °C to 140 °C. In addition, the in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (in-situ FTIR) and Density functional theory (DFT) studies confirm two reaction paths under Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) mechanism: a low barrier path takes place at low temperature, and another new reaction path with a barrier of 1.8 eV can take place at a high temperature. The new reaction site formed at the CuO/Cu2O interface resulted in different activation modes of CO and O2. The modification of OVs significantly reduces the reaction temperature required. This work provides a method to improve the performance of co-catalytic oxidation via the coupling effect of OVs and heterojunctions.

Abstract:The influence of CO pretreatment on the properties of CuO/CeO2/γ-Al2O3 catalysts was investigated by XRD, H2-TPR and IR, and the activities of the catalysts in low-temperature CO oxidation reactions were tested. The results indicate that CO treatment leads to the decrease of the activity of CuO/CeO2/γ-Al2O3 catalysts while such treatment causes an increase of the activity of the CuO/γ-Al2O3 catalysts in low-temperature CO oxidation (≤200°C).

Abstract:A series of CuOx-CeO2 catalysts is designed by coating composite copper-ceria precursor with different thickness of CeO2, followed by thermal treatment at 500 and 700 degrees C respectively to investigate the outward migration phenomenon of Cu species induced by high temperature thermal treatment. For the CuOx-CeO2 catalysts calcined at 500 degrees C, the coating of CeO2 covers the active surface Cu entities and degrades the low temperature catalytic performance for preferential oxidation of CO (CO-PROX). However, thermal treatment at 700 degrees C induces the migration of large amounts of Cu entities from bulk to the surface of CeO2 nanoparticles and recovers the low temperature catalytic performance. In addition, 700 degrees C thermal treatment of CuOx-CeO2 catalyst without CeO2 coating causes excessive outward migration of Cu species and severe CuO agglomeration, which decreases the catalytic performance at low reaction temperature, but broadens the high temperature operation window on account of the formation of inverse CeO2-CuO structure. This work provides deeper insight into the regime of thermally induced Cu migration phenomenon, and illuminated the structure-performance relationship of copperceria based catalysts for CO-PROX.

Abstract:Nanostructured CeO2 supported CuO–MnO2 (CuMn/Ce) catalysts were synthesized by wet co-impregnation method and compared with CuO/CeO2 and MnO2/CeO2 catalysts on CO oxidation. The former shows significantly higher catalytic activity toward CO oxidation than the bimetallic oxides catalysts with minimum T50. Dual synergistic effects in the interfaces of CuO–MnO2 and CuO–CeO2 shall be responsible for the higher oxidation performance of CuMn/Ce catalyst. As Cu/Mn mass ratio varies from 1/0.2 to 1/9, CO oxidation activities of the catalysts present unimodal distribution, and the catalyst with Cu/Mn = 1/1 shows the highest performance (T50 = 45.8 °C; Ea = 24.11 kJ mol−1). Cu acts as CO dissociative adsorption sites, and Mn–Ce supplies activated O species from gas molecule and lattice oxygen, which are both indispensable for improving utilization efficiency of the reactants in the dual redox processes. The catalytic performance of catalyst is also vitally correlated with calcination temperature (160–320 °C). The optimum calcination temperature of CuMn/Ce catalyst is 320 °C. Catalyst characterization results indicate that the pretreatment at 320 °C is decent to obtain desired metal oxides along with fine texture properties.Graphical Abstract

Effect of Interaction Between Cuo and Ceo2 on the Performance of Cuo-Ceo2 Catalysts for Selective Oxidation of Co in H-2-Rich Streams

Abstract:A series of CuO CeO2 catalysts have been prepared by different methods and the effects of interaction between CuO and CeO2 on the performance of CuO-CeO2 catalysts for selective oxidation of CO in H-2-rich streams have been investigated. The results show that HY-CuO-CeO2 with strong interaction and synergistic effect between interfacial CuO and CeO2 exhibits superior catalytic activity, especially at low temperatures. For HY-CuO-CeO2, the temperature of 50 % CO conversion is only 75 degrees C and the temperature window of CO conversions up to 99.0 % is about 30 degrees C wide, from 120-140 degrees C. The strong interaction between copper and cerium oxide promotes the reduction of highly dispersed CuO species, the formation and stability of abundant Cu+ species and the production of abundant oxygen vacancies and lattice oxygen of copper oxide.

Abstract:A series of Fe2O3 supported CuO catalysts were synthesized to investigate the effect of crystal types on CO oxidation performance of CuO/Fe2O3. The catalysts were characterized with BET surface area, XRD, Raman, O 2 -TPD, H 2 -TPR, XPS and in situ DRIFTS. The results showed that the crystal types had significant impact on the performance of CuO/Fe2O3, and the CuO/γ-Fe2O3 catalyst exhibited higher catalytic activity, which corresponding to 98.5% CO conversion at 180 °C. Besides, CuO/γ-Fe2O3 displayed better reducibility, which improved the redox cycle between Fe2+ and Fe3+ species. Furthermore, the pathway of CO oxidation on CuO/Fe2O3 followed L-H mechanism. Large amount of Fe2+ species and oxygen vacancies on CuO/γ-Fe2O3 increased the oxygen activation ability, which provided more reactive oxygen species to promote the rate-determining step in CO oxidation. Moreover, carbonate species on CuO/α-Fe2O3 were prone to accumulate, which resulted in the covering of active sites on catalyst surface and inhibited the adsorption and activation of CO and O2.

Abstract:Cu-Ce-O catalysts, prepared by the amorphous citrate precursor (ACP) method, were investigated by ICP, XRD and micro-reactor techniques. At low copper content of Cu-Ce-O catalysts, fluorite structures formed at low calcining temperatures, and CuO doped into the CeO2 matrix; at high copper content, in addition to the fluorite structure, crystalline monoclinic phase CuO formed as well at high calcining temperatures. There was no other phase formed even calcined at 1000 degrees C. The results show that only a little CuO dopes into the CeO2 matrix to form complex oxide, which promotes the catalytic activity of CO oxidation greatly. The optimum Cu-Ce-O catalyst is composed of 15% copper by Cu/(Ce+Cu) atomic ratio, and calcined at 700 degrees C for 4h. The phase compositions include the crystalline CuO and the active complex oxide with fluorite structure. The formulation of the active complex oxide is Cu0.06Ce0.94O1.94.

Abstract:Ceria modified Co3O4 catalysts for low temperature CO oxidation were prepared by a precipitation-oxidation method, and characterized by low-temperature N-2 adsorption/desorption, TPR, O-2-TPD, CO-TPD and transient-response reaction. The roles of ceria in CeO2-Co3O4 catalyst and the effect of pretreatment on the performance of CeO2-Co3O4 for CO oxidation were investigated in detail. The results show that the presence of CeO2 can increase its surface area, reduce the crystal size of Co3O4, and improve obviously the catalytic activity and stability of Co3O4 for CO oxidation, such as its T-100 is only -60 degrees C. It was also found that the addition of CeO2 can not only promote the adsorption of O-2 and the reaction of adsorbed CO with surface oxygen species to form CO2, but also increase the CO2 desorption speed. The pretreatment method can affect the catalytic activity of CeO2-Co3O4, the catalyst treated in N-2 exhibits higher catalytic activity for low-temperature CO oxidation due to formation of oxygen vacancy. The catalyst reduced in H-2 shows lower activity for CO oxidation although it has more surface oxygen vacancies, because of the difficult desorption of CO2 on the reduced CeO2-Co3O4 catalyst.
Promotional Effect of Indium on the CuO-CeO2 Catalysts for Low-Temperature CO Oxidation

Abstract:Copper-based catalysts have been extensively used in the oxidation of CO due to their low cost and high efficiency, especially copper-cerium catalysts. In this work, CuO/CeInOx catalysts were prepared by a deposition-precipitation method, with the physical/chemical properties and CO oxidation activity systematically investigated. The In dopant incorporates into the CeO2 lattice in the near-surface region. In-O-Ce species promote the generation of surface oxygen vacancies and increase the number of Cu+ sites. As a result, the Cu/Ce90In10Ox catalyst exhibits a superior CO oxidation activity at low temperatures (T90 = 84 °C (without 3 vol.% H2O) and T90 = 110 °C (with 3 vol.% H2O)). The TOF of Cu/Ce90In10Ox at 90 °C is 1.19 times (without 3 vol.% H2O) and 3.13 times (with 3 vol.% H2O) that of Cu/Ce100In0Ox.

Abstract:Co3O4/CeO2 catalysts are prepared through co-precipitation-oxidation method and characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), specific surface areas (SSA) and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR). Effect of the cobalt content on the physical and chemical performance on the compound oxide is reviewed. The carbon monoxide oxidation is investigated in humid and dry conditions. It is found that the addition of CeO2 can decrease the crystallite size of Co3O4, the particle sizes of Co3O4 in the Co3O4/CeO2 composite (Co to Ce atomic ratio =9 /1) is calcined at 723 K and calculated to be 9.5 nm on average and the SSA surface area is 119.8 m2/g. Under dry condition, Co3O4 displays higher activity than Co3O4/CeO2 composite for CO oxidation. On the contrary, Co3O4/CeO2 (Co to Ce atomic ratio =9/1) catalyst exhibits better resistance to moisture than pure Co3O4 does.
Effect of the preparation method on the performance of CuO-MnO x-CeO 2 catalysts for selective oxidation of CO in H 2-rich streams

Abstract:Selective oxidation of CO in H2-rich streams is performed over a series of CuO–MnOx–CeO2 catalysts prepared by hydrothermal (CuMC-HY), co-precipitation (CuMC-CP), impregnation (CuMC-IM) and citrate sol–gel (CuMC-SG) methods. The catalysts are characterized by N2 adsorption/desorption, XRD, SEM, HR-TEM, TPR and XPS techniques. The results show that the catalyst prepared by a hydrothermal method exhibits the best catalytic activity, especially at low temperatures. The temperature of 50% CO conversion (T50) is only 74°C and the temperature window of CO conversions up to 99.0% is about 40°C wide, from 110 to 140°C. Moreover, the temperature window is still maintained 20°C wide even at lower temperatures when there are 15% CO2 and 7.5% H2O in the reaction gas. The superior catalytic performance of CuMC-HY is attributed to the formation of Mn–Cu–Ce–O solid solution, the unique pore structure and the existence of more Cu+ and Mn4+ species as well as oxygen vacancies. The sequence of catalytic activity is as follows: CuMC-HY>CuMC-SG>CuMC-IM>CuMC-CP. The worst catalytic activity, obtained from the catalyst prepared by the co-precipitation method, is possibly related to the existence of independent CuOx and MnOx oxides, which weakly interact with ceria in the catalyst.

Abstract:CuO/gamma-Al2O3 samples were prepared by impregnating gamma-Al2O3 with an aqueous solution containing requisite amount of Cu(NO3)(2). BET, XRD, UV-DRS, H-2-TPR and CO oxidation were employed to characterize the dispersion, reduction behavior and catalytic properties of CuO/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst calcinated at different temperatures. The results indicate that the dispersion capacity of CuO on the surface of gamma-Al2O3 is about 0.56mmol/100m(2) when it is calcinated at 450 degrees C; while for the samples calcinated at 750 degrees C, Cu2+ would occupy both the octahedral and tetrahedral vacant sites on the (110) plane of gamma-Al2O3. For samples with low CuO loading amount, only the reduction peak of Cu2+ in octahedral coordination environment is observed in xxCu/Al-450 samples; while for xxCu/Al-750 samples, the reduction peaks of Cu2+ in octahedral and tetrahedral coordination environment can be observed and the reduction of Cu2+ in octahedral coordination environment would promote the reduction of Cu2+ in tetrahedral coordination environment. The CO oxidation results indicate that the activity of dispersed CuO species in octahedral coordination environment is higher than that in tetrahedral coordination environment.
