Abstract:We study the problem of finding complete conformal metrics determined by some symmetric function of the modified Schouten tensor on compact manifolds with boundary; which reduces to a Dirichlet problem. We prove the existence of the solution under some suitable conditions. Abstract:The authors consider the problem of conformally deforming a metric such that the k-curvature defined by an elementary symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor on a compact manifold with boundary to a prescribed function. A consequence of our main result is that there exists a complete metric such that the Monge-Ampère type equation with respect to its Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor is solvable, provided that the initial Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor belongs to a negative convex cone.

Abstract:In this paper we describe some recent results on the geometry of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. We surveyed new and classical metrics on the moduli spaces of hyperbolic Riemann surfaces and their geometric properties. We then discussed the Mumford goodness and generalized goodness of various metrics on the moduli spaces and their deformation invariance. By combining with the dual Nakano negativity of the Weil-Petersson metric we derive various consequences such that the infinitesimal rigidity, the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and the log Chern number computations.

Abstract:We study curvature invariants of a sub-Riemannian manifold (i.e., a manifold with a Riemannian metric on a non-holonomic distribution) related to mutual curvature of several pairwise orthogonal subspaces of the distribution, and prove geometrical inequalities for a sub-Riemannian submanifold. As applications, inequalities are proved for submanifolds with mutually orthogonal distributions that include scalar and mutual curvature. For compact submanifolds, inequalities are obtained that are supported by known integral formulas for almost-product manifolds.

Abstract:These notes give an introduction to the equivalence problem of sub-Riemannian manifolds. We first introduce preliminaries in terms of connections, frame bundles and sub-Riemannian geometry. Then we arrive to the main aim of these notes, which is to give the description of the canonical grading and connection existing on sub-Riemann manifolds with constant symbol. These structures are exactly what is needed in order to determine if two manifolds are isometric. We give three concrete examples, which are Engel (2,3,4)-manifolds, contact manifolds and Cartan (2,3,5)-manifolds. These notes are an edited version of a lecture series given at the \href{https://conference.math.muni.cz/srni/}{42nd Winter school: Geometry and Physics}, Snr\'i, Check Republic, mostly based on other earlier work. However, the work on Engel (2,3,4)-manifolds is original research, and illustrate the important special case were our model has the minimal set of isometries.

Abstract:Inspired by Y. Ollivier's coarse Ricci curvature, we introduce a novel concept of coarse extrinsic curvature on Riemannian submanifolds. This is defined through Wasserstein distances between test probability measures supported in the tubular neighbourhood of the submanifold. This framework provides an understanding of the geometric properties of embeddings, offering valuable insights into their curvature dynamics and intrinsic structures. Additionally, this coarse curvature can also be extracted from empirical measures supported on random point clouds generated by a Poisson point process, and has the potential to extend to metric embeddings.

Abstract:The geometry of submanifolds in Kähler manifolds is an important research topic. In the present paper, we study submanifolds in complex space forms admitting a semi-symmetric non-metric connection. We prove the Chen–Ricci inequality, Chen basic inequality, and a generalized Euler inequality for such submanifolds. These inequalities provide estimations of the mean curvature (the main extrinsic invariants) in terms of intrinsic invariants: Ricci curvature, the Chen invariant, and scalar curvature. In the proofs, we use the sectional curvature of a semi-symmetric, non-metric connection recently defined by A. Mihai and the first author, as well as its properties.

Abstract:From the basic geometry of submanifolds will be recalled what are the extrinsic principal tangential directions, (first studied by Camille Jordan in the $18$seventies), and what are the principal first normal directions, (first studied by Kostadin Trencevski in the $19$nineties), and what are their corresponding Casorati curvatures. For reasons of simplicity of exposition only, hereafter this will merely be done explicitly in the case of arbitrary submanifolds in Euclidean spaces. Then, for the special case of Lagrangian submanifolds in complex Euclidean spaces, the natural relationships between these distinguished tangential and normal directions and their corresponding curvatures will be established.

Abstract:For conformal geometries of Riemannian signature, we provide a comprehensive and explicit treatment of the core local theory for embedded submanifolds of arbitrary dimension. This is based in the conformal tractor calculus and includes a conformally invariant Gauss formula leading to conformal versions of the Gauss, Codazzi, and Ricci equations. It provides the tools for proliferating submanifold conformal invariants, as well for extending to conformally singular Riemannian manifolds the notions of mean curvature and of minimal and CMC submanifolds. A notion of distinguished submanifold is defined by asking the tractor second fundamental form to vanish. We show that for the case of curves this exactly characterises conformal geodesics (a.k.a. conformal circles) while for hypersurfaces it is the totally umbilic condition. So, for other codimensions, this unifying notion interpolates between these extremes, and we prove that in all dimensions this coincides with the submanifold being weakly conformally circular, meaning that ambient conformal circles remain in the submanifold. Stronger notions of conformal circularity are then characterised similarly. Next we provide a very general theory and construction of quantities that are necessarily conserved along distinguished submanifolds. This first integral theory thus vastly generalises the results available for conformal circles in [56]. We prove that any normal solution to an equation from the class of first BGG equations can yield such a conserved quantity, and show that it is easy to provide explicit formulae for these. Finally we prove that the property of being distinguished is also captured by a type of moving incidence relation. This second characterisation is used to show that, for suitable solutions of conformal Killing-Yano equations, a certain zero locus of the solution is necessarily a distinguished submanifold.

Abstract:Let M be an n-dimensional closed submanifold with parallel mean curvature in Sn+p, (h) over tilde, it the trace free part of the second fundamental form, and (sigma) over tilde (u) = parallel to(h) over tilde (u, u)parallel to(2) for any unit vector u is an element of TM. We prove that there exists a positive constant C(n, p, H) (>= 1/3) such that if (sigma) over tilde (u) <= C(n. p, H), then either (sigma) over tilde (u) equivalent to 0 and M is a totally umbilical sphere, or (sigma) over tilde (u) equivalent to C(n, p, H). A geometrical classification of closed submanifolds with parallel mean curvature satisfying (sigma) over tilde (u) equivalent to C(n, p, H) is also given. Our main result is an extension of the Gauchman theorem [4].

Abstract:Given a surface $S$ in a 3D contact sub-Riemannian manifold $M$, we investigate the metric structure induced on $S$ by $M$, in the sense of length spaces. First, we define a coefficient $\widehat K$ at characteristic points that determines locally the characteristic foliation of $S$. Next, we identify some global conditions for the induced distance to be finite. In particular, we prove that the induced distance is finite for surfaces with the topology of a sphere embedded in a tight coorientable distribution, with isolated characteristic points.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate rigidity of geometric and differentiable structures of complete submanifolds via an extrinsic geometrical quantity tau(x) defined by the second fundamental form. We verify a geometric rigidity theorem for complete submanifolds with parallel mean curvature in a unit sphere Sn+P. Inspired by the rigidity theorem, we prove a differentiable sphere theorem for complete submanifolds in Sn+p. On the Petrov Type of a 4-manifold

Abstract:On an oriented 4-manifold, we examine the geometry that arises when the curvature operator of a Riemannian or Lorentzian metric $g$ commutes, not with its own Hodge star operator, but rather with that of another semi-Riemannian metric $h$ that is a suitable deformation of $g$. We classify the case when one of these metrics is Riemannian and the other Lorentzian by generalizing the concept of Petrov Type from general relativity; the case when $h$ is split-signature is also examined. The "generalized Petrov Types" so obtained are shown to relate to the critical points of $g$'s sectional curvature, and sometimes yield unique normal forms. They also carry topological information independent of the Hitchin-Thorpe inequality, and yield a direct geometric formulation of "almost-Einsten" metric via the Ricci or sectional curvature of $g$.

Abstract:This article investigates the geometric and topologic of warped product submanifolds in Riemannian warped product Q ε m × R . In this respect, we obtain the first Chen inequality that involves extrinsic invariants like the length of the warping functions and the mean curvature. This inequality involves two intrinsic invariants (sectional curvature and δ -invariant). In addition, an integral bound is provided for the Bochner operator formula of compact warped product submanifolds in terms of the Ricci curvature gradient. We aim to apply this theory to many structures and obtain Dirichlet eigenvalues for problem applications. Some new results regarding the vanishing mean curvature are presented as a partial solution, and this can be considered for the well-known problem given by Chern.

Abstract:In the present paper we deal with (local) infinitesimal isometries of special sub-Riemannian manifolds (a contact and oriented sub-Riemannian manifold is called special if the Reeb vector field is an isometry). The objective of the paper is to find some conditions on such manifolds which allow one to construct, locally around a given point, infinitesimal isometries and then, possibly, to prolong them onto bigger domains. The mentioned conditions are related to the so-called $\is^*$-regular and $\is$-regular points, the notions introduced by Nomizu in [22] in the Riemannian setting and slightly modified by the author.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the geometry of sub-Finslerian manifolds which are in general irreversible. After clarifying the fundamental concepts about sub-Finslerian geometry, we prove the following results: (1) The metric space of a sub-Finslerian manifold is intrinsic and the (forward and backward) topology of the metric space is equivalent to the underlying topology of the manifold. (2) Any two points which are sufficiently close can be joined by a minimizing geodesic. Moreover, if the metric space is boundedly compact, then any two points can be joined by a minimizing geodesic. (3) Every strongly normal minimizing geodesic parameterized by constant speed is smooth and is characterized as the projection of a solution of a Hamiltonian system on the cotangent bundle. (4) The group of U -isometries is a Lie transformation group of a sub-Finslerian manifold. We also give a description of homogeneous sub-Finslerian manifolds as well as sub-Finslerian symmetric spaces. These results set up a framework of irreversible sub-Finslerian geometry.

Variations of metric that preserve a Riemannian submersion and geometry of its fibers

Abstract:On the domain of a Riemannian submersion, we consider variations (i.e., smooth one-parameter families) of Riemannian metrics, for which the submersion is Riemannian and which all keep the metric induced on its fibers fixed. We obtain a formula for the variation of the second fundamental form of the fibers with respect to such changes of metric. We find a choice of parameters defining the variations, that allows to easily formulate the necessary and sufficient conditions for preserving particular geometry of the fibers, i.e., keeping them totally geodesic, totally umbilical, or minimal. These conditions are related to the existence of Killing, conformal Killing and divergence-free vector fields on the fibers. We find conditions for metric to be a critical point of integrated squared norms of the mean curvature and the second fundamental form of the fibers, with respect to the considered variations, and prove that all critical points of these functionals are points of their local minima. We also examine variations of sectional curvatures of planes defined by the horizontal lifts of vectors from the image of the submersion.

Abstract:Intrinsic nonlinear elasticity deals with the deformations of elastic bodies as isometric immersions of Riemannian manifolds into the Euclidean spaces (see Ciarlet [9, 10]). In this paper, we study the rigidity and continuity properties of elastic bodies for the intrinsic approach to nonlinear elasticity. We first establish a geometric rigidity estimate for mappings from a Riemannian manifold to a sphere (in the spirit of Friesecke–James–Müller [20]), which is the first result of this type for the non-Euclidean case as far as we know. Then we prove the asymptotic rigidity of elastic membranes under suitable geometric conditions. Finally, we provide a simplified geometric proof of the continuous dependence of deformations of elastic bodies on the Cauchy–Green tensors and second fundamental forms, which extends the Ciarlet–Mardare theorem in [17] to arbitrary dimensions and co-dimensions.
