Abstract:The introduction of heterostructures is a new approach in gas sensing due to their easy and quick transport of charges. Herein, facile hydrothermal and solid-state techniques are employed to synthesize an α-Fe2O3/Nb2O5 heterostructure. The morphology, microstructure, crystallinity and surface composition of the synthesized heterostructures are investigated by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analyses. The successful fabrication of the heterostructures was achieved via the mutual incorporation of α-Fe2O3 nanorods with Nb2O5 interconnected nanoparticles (INPs). A sensor based on the α-Fe2O3(0.09)/Nb2O5 heterostructure with a high surface area exhibited enhanced gas-sensing features, maintaining high selectivity and sensitivity, and a considerable recovery percentage towards ethanol gas. The sensing response of the α-Fe2O3(0.09)/Nb2O5 heterostructure at lower operating temperature (160 °C) is around nine times higher than a pure Nb2O5 (INP) sensor at 180 °C with the flow of 100 ppm ethanol gas. The sensors also show excellent selectivity, good long-term stability and a rapid response/recovery time (8s/2s, respectively) to ethanol. The superior electronic conductivity and upgraded sensitivity performance of gas sensors based on the α-Fe2O3(0.09)/Nb2O5 heterostructure are attributed due to its unique structural features, high specific surface area and the synergic effect of the n–n heterojunction. The promising results demonstrate the potential application of the α-Fe2O3(0.09)/Nb2O5 heterostructure as a good sensing material for the fabrication of ethanol sensors.
Metal‐Organic Frameworks‐Derived Porous In2O3 Hollow Nanorod for High‐Performance Ethanol Gas Sensor

Abstract:Designing hollow micro/nano structures for gas sensing materials is highly desirable for boosting gas sensing properties and still remains challenging, especially through a simple and economic way. Herein, porous In2O3 hollow nanorod (In2O3-HNR), which was successfully fabricated by thermal decomposition of an In-MOF (CPP-3) precursor, was applied as gas sensing materials. The pristine CPP-3 and obtained In2O3-HNR were systematically characterized by various techniques, such as XRD, SEM, TEM, TGA-DTA, XPS, Raman and N-2 physisorption. Characterization results indicated that the hexagonal rod-like shape of original CPP-3 was maintained after calcination, whereas the surface became rough and concave. In addition, the obtained In2O3-HNR displayed a hollow interior with porous shell composed by In2O3 nanoparticles (9 nm). Taking advantage of this unique porous nanostructure, In2O3-HNR exhibited a response as high as 6.2 to 5 ppm ethanol at operating temperature of 200 degrees C, fast response and recovery (3 and 4 s, respectively), and good selectivity to ethanol. The excellent ethanol-sensing properties endow this In-MOF templated In2O3-HNR material with a promising application in practical detection of ethanol gas. This method could be extended to the fabrication of other micro/nano structures with well-defined morphology and composition for high-performance gas sensing considering diversity of MOFs family.
Branching TiO2 Nanowire Arrays for Enhanced Ethanol Sensing

Abstract:Nanostructure modulation is effective to achieve high performance TiO2-based gas sensors. We herein report a wet-chemistry route to precipitate directly branched TiO2 nanowire arrays on alumina tubes for gas sensing applications. The optimized branched TiO2 nanowire array exhibits a response of 9.2 towards 100 ppm ethanol; whilst those of the pristine TiO2 nanowire array and the branched TiO2 nanowire powders randomly distributed are 5.1 and 3.1, respectively. The enhanced response is mainly contributed to the unique porous architecture and quasi-aligned nanostructure, which provide more active sites and also favor gas migration. Phase junctions between the backbone and the branch of the branched TiO2 nanowire arrays help the resistance modulation as a result of potential barriers. The facile precipitation of quasi-aligned arrays of branched TiO2 nanowires, which are in situ grown on ceramic tubes, thus provides a new economical synthetic route to TiO2-based sensors with excellent properties.

Abstract:A strategy for improving the sensitivity of a sensor for detecting CO and NH3 gases is presented herein. The gas sensor was fabricated from ZnO metal oxide semiconductor nanostructures grown via a vapor–liquid–solid process and decorated with α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles via a sol–gel process. The response was enhanced by the formation of an α-Fe2O3/ZnO n–n heterojunction and the growth of thinner wires. ZnO nanowires were grown on indium–tin–oxide glass electrodes using Sn as a catalyst for growth instead of Au. The structure and elemental composition were investigated using field-emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The gas sensing results indicate that the response value to 100 ppm CO was 18.8 at the optimum operating temperature of 300 °C.

Abstract:Chemiresistive gas sensor with high sensitivity, selectivity and fast response for specific target gas has many applications from environmental monitor to internet of things. Herein, a highly sensitive and selective nanostructured triethylamine (TEA) gas sensor is fabricated successfully by designing semiconductor heterostructures consisting of ZnO nanorods and alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles. ZnO nanorods grow directly on flat Al2O3 electrodes and alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles are deposited onto ZnO nanorods by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Such alpha-Fe2O3/ZnO sensor has larger specific surface area (20.79 m(2)/g), adsorbs more oxygen ions and exhibits higher response (63 to 50 ppm TEA), lower detection concentration (1 ppm), and shorter response time (4 s), which are all much better than the controlled ZnO nanorods sensor. Besides the interface depletion layer at the alpha-Fe2O3/ZnO interface, we find that the surface depletion layer due to oxygen absorption is also very important for the sensor performance. Moreover, more surface adsorbed oxygen in the alpha-Fe2O3/ZnO sensor is proved by both XPS analysis and density functional theory (DFT) simulation, which highlights the significance of gas sensing mechanism study for such composite heterojunction structure.

However, conventional method which relys on noble metal nanoparticles is confronted with drawback of significantly increased cost. To maximize the atom efficiency and reduce the cost for practical industrial application, designing sensor material with noble metal isolated single atom sites (ISAS) doping is a desired option. Here, we report an atomically dispersed platinum on one-dimensional arranged porous γ-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticle composites as highly efficient ethanol gas sensor. The optimized sample (Pt 1 -Fe 2 O 3 -ox) exhibited a high response ( R a / R g = 102.4) and good selectivity to ethanol gas. It is demonstrated only the Pt single atom sites with high valance can effectively promote the adsorption capacity to ethanol and consequently enhance the sensitivity of sensing process by changing the electrical structure of Fe 2 O 3 support. This work indicates the single atom sites could play a vital role in improving the performance of conventional metal oxides gas sensors and pave way for the exploration of ISAS-enhanced gas sensor for other volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Abstract:In this work, sensors based on the ZnO nanowire arrays/CuO nanospheres heterostructure were prepared by using the simple low temperature hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDX) were used to characterize the crystal phase, structure and surface morphology of the as-prepared samples, respectively. The sensing characteristics of the as prepared samples were systematically measured. Obviously, the sensors based on the ZnO/CuO heterostructure exhibited excellent sensor parameters than pure CuO nanospheres. The response value of the ZnO/CuO heterostructure sensor with the growth time of 5 h (ZC-2) to 100 ppm of ethanol gas is up to 55.4 at 122 °C, which is about 8.8 fold and 3.4 fold more than that of pure CuO nanospheres (R = 6.3) and ZnO nanowire arrays (R = 16.4), respectively. In addition, the ZC-2 sensor exhibits the excellent selectivity for ethanol compared to other test gases. Significant improvement of the gas sensing characteristics was related to the formation of n-p heterojunction. The prepared ZC-2 gas sensor exhibits broad application prospects in the detection of ethanol.
Synergistic effects of α-Fe2O3nanoparticles and Fe-doping on gas-sensing performance of NiO nanowires and interface mechanism

Abstract:High surface area nickel oxide nanowires (NiO NWs), Fe-doped NiO NWs andα-Fe2O3/Fe-doped NiO NWs were synthesized with nanocasting pathway, and then the morphology, microstructure and components of all samples were characterized with XRD, TEM, EDS, UV-vis spectra and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. Owing to the uniform mesoporous template, all samples with the same diameter exhibit the similar mesoporous-structures. The loadedα-Fe2O3nanoparticles should exist in mesoporous channels between Fe-doped NiO NWs to form heterogeneous contact at the interface of n-typeα-Fe2O3nanoparticles and p-type NiO NWs. The gas-sensing results indicate that Fe-dopant andα-Fe2O3-loading both improve the gas-sensing performance of NiO NWs sensors.α-Fe2O3/Fe-doped NiO NWs sensors presented the highest response to 100 ppm ethanol gas (55.264) compared with Fe-doped NiO NWs (24.617) and NiO NWs sensors (3.189). The donor Fe-dopant increases the ground state resistance and the absorbed oxygen content in air.α-Fe2O3nanoparticles in electron depletion region result in the increasing resistance in ethanol gas and decreasing resistance in air. In this way,α-Fe2O3/Fe-doped NiO NWs sensor presents the excellent gas-sensing performance due to the formation of heterogeneous contact at the interface.

Abstract:Gas sensors play a crucial part in air monitoring and exclusive detection of exhaled biomarkers. Co3O4 is regarded as a promising gas sensing material in lower temperatures (<200 °C) due to its affinity with oxygen and multivalent characteristics. However, its poor intrinsic conductivity leads to a lower response, hindering further practical applications. The introduction of Fe2O3 is desired to enhance the conductivity and regulate oxygen-vacancy defects. Thus, the Fe2O3@Co3O4 double-shelled nanotubes (DSNTs) for ethanol detection were successfully synthesized through a facile coaxial electrospinning route. The Fe2O3@Co3O4-1 DSNTs based sensor exhibited a lower detection limit (1 ppm) at 160 °C, and a remarkable response 3.5 times higher than that of pure Co3O4 HNTs. The sensor still maintained a good response even under a high humidity of 85%. An oxygen adsorption model combined with an energy band structure diagram was proposed to explain the enhanced sensing mechanism. The enhanced gas-sensing performance can be attributed to double-shelled hollow structures and heterojunctions, which promoted the active sites for gas adsorption on the surface of sensing layers.

Abstract:Exploring high-performance sensing materials is ultra-important for safety control. Herein, 1D alpha-MoO3/0D ZnO nanocomposites are prepared via a facile hydrothermal method and its microstructure is characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It is confirmed that the as-prepared nanocomposites are constituted by 1D alpha-MoO3 nanobelts (200-300 nm in width), with the surface loaded with fine ZnO nanoparticles. Sensing properties of the alpha-MoO3 and 1D alpha-MoO3/0D ZnO nanocomposites to ethanol are measured and compared. Interestingly, the ZnO-decorated alpha-MoO3 nanobelts exhibited excellent sensitivity and selectivity to ethanol at relatively low operating temperature (250 degrees C) when compared with that of the raw alpha-MoO3 nanobelts, indicating a good candidate of 1D alpha-MoO3/0D ZnO nanocomposites for future ethanol detection. Abstract:Nanorods, nanotubes, and nanocubes of alpha-Fe2O3 were synthesized via a hydrothermal process and subsequent calcination treatment. The typical nanorod has about 71 nm in width, 7 nm in thickness, and 314 nm in length. The nanotube has outer diameter of 90-110 nm, inner diameter of 40-80 nm, and lengths of 250-400 nm. The nanocubes are rhombus cubes with an edge length of about 680 nm. The nanorods, nanotubes and nanocubes were fabricated into chemiresistive sensors. The responses (R-a/R-g) of the nanotube sensor to ethanol, acetone, formaldehyde, and ammonia are greatly higher than those of the nanorod/the nanocube sensors. The nanotubes showed enhancing gas-sensitive properties. The responses of the nanotube sensor reached 75, 26, 6.8, 1.7 to 200 ppm acetone, ethanol, formaldehyde, and ammonia at 270 degrees C and a 30-45% relative humidity, respectively, which shows high selectivity. So the nanotubes are gas-sensing materials more excellent than nanorods and nanocubes.
Zinc oxide nanonets with hierarchical crystalline nodes: High-performance ethanol sensors enhanced by grain boundaries

Abstract:Researchers commonly enhance the sensitivity of gas sensing nanomaterials by increasing the effective active area. It would be more straightforward to instead optimize the grain boundaries. In this work, Zn4CO3(OH)6·H2O was synthesized as a precursor to ZnO via a facile hydrothermal process and annealing, respectively. ZnO nanonets of hierarchical crystalline nodes with abundant grain boundaries was prepared. The nanonets exhibited an ultra-sensitive response value of 398, and a fast response time (4 s of exposure to 100 ppm ethanol), compared with traditional nanosheets. The sensing enhancement as per the grain boundary was modeled and experiments confirmed the model. Microstructural and microscopic analyses indicated that the sensitivity of the nanonets mainly is attributable to the abundant grain boundaries with lots of hierarchical crystalline nodes. The high-sensitive response and fast response time toward ethanol by the ZnO nanonets is considered to derive from the enhancement effect of grain boundaries in hierarchical crystalline nodes, which creates the additional depletion layers from abundant oxygen vacancies led to a substantial change in the surface potential, referring to the difference between in-air versus in-ethanol. The proposed high-performance sensor is inexpensive to fabricate, straightforward to synthesize, and advantageous for practical use.

Abstract:In this work, we present a strategy to improve the gas-sensing performance of NiFe2O4 via a controllable annealing Ni/Fe precursor to fluffy NiFe2O4 nanosheet flowers. X-ray diffraction (XRD), a scanning electron microscope (SEM), nitrogen adsorption–desorption measurements and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to characterize the crystal structure, morphology, specific surface area and surface structure. The gas-sensing performance was tested and the results demonstrate that the response was strongly influenced by the specific surface area and surface structure. The resultant NiFe2O4 nanosheet flowers with a heating rate of 8 °C min−1, which have a fluffier morphology and more oxygen vacancies in the surface, exhibited enhanced response and shortened response time toward ethanol. The easy approach facilitates the mass production of gas sensors based on bimetallic ferrites with high sensing performance via controlling the morphology and surface structure.

Porous Cobalt Oxide Nanowires: Notable Improved Gas Sensing Performances

Abstract:The porous Co 3 O 4 nanowires have been successfully synthesized via modified template method. A possible growth mechanism governing the formation of such 1D nanowires is proposed. The as-prepared products have been characterized by X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD), Extended X-ray Absorption Fine-structure (EXAFS), High-resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) and N 2 adsorption/desorption analysis. Our systematic studies have revealed that the porous Co 3 O 4 nanowires show excellent gas sensing performances, which demonstrate the potential application of the 1D nanostructured Co 3 O 4 in the detection of the ethanol gas as a sensor material. The improved performances are owing to its large specific surface area and porous morphology.

The control experiments indicated that glacial acetic acid introduced in the hydrothermal solution could adjust the nucleation site and density of alpha-FeOOH nanorods as well as prevent the formation of urchin-like alpha-FeOOH byproduct. The growth process of alpha-FeOOH nanorods on SnO2 hollow nanofibers was also investigated. The hierarchical SnO2/alpha-Fe2O3 hollow nanofibers were then fabricated as gas sensors for the investigation of gas sensing applications. By comparison of sensing properties, the response values of the sensors fabricated with hierarchical SnO2/alpha-Fe2O3 core-shell nanofibers toward 100 ppm acetone and ethanol could reach to be 30.363 and 20.370, respectively, exhibiting much better performance than those using urchin-like alpha-Fe2O3 nanostructures and pure SnO2 nanofibers. Meanwhile, the sensors based on hierarchical SnO2/alpha-Fe2O3 nanofibers also had shorter response and recovery times than those of alpha-Fe2O3 nanostructures. The synergetic effect of the composite of alpha-Fe2O3 and SnO2 together with unique hollow core-shell architectures are main contribution for the enhanced gas sensing properties. Abstract:The rough surface Fe2O3–SnO2 composite nanorod material was prepared by electrostatic spinning. The morphology and nanostructure of Fe2O3–SnO2 composite nanorods were characterized by scanning electron microscopy SEM, nitrogen physical adsorption and X-ray diffraction. Through the analysis of the test results, it can be shown that the Fe2O3–SnO2 nanorod samples prepared in this experiment have the advantages of high purity, good crystallinity and large specific surface area. The specific surface area of the sample obtained from the test is 19.27 m2/g. According to the gas sensitivity test results of Fe2O3–SnO2 nanorods, it can be seen that Fe2O3–SnO2 samples have high responsiveness and excellent gas sensitivity selectivity. Various gases were tested in this experiment, and it was found that the sensor has good gas selectivity to isobutanol. At 310 °C, the sensor's response to 100 ppm isobutanol reached 13. This experiment not only prepared Fe2O3–SnO2 nanorod sensor with good isobutanol gas sensitivity. And it realized the accurate measurement of continuous isobutanol concentration. In addition, the gas sensitivity mechanism of Fe2O3–SnO2 nanomaterials was discussed.

Abstract:Identifying the nature of gas-sensing material under the real-time operating condition is very critical for the research and development of gas sensors. In this work, we implement in situ Raman and XRD to investigate the gas-sensing nature of α-Fe2O3 sensing material, which derived from Fe-based metal-organic gel (MOG). The active mode of α-Fe2O3 as gas-sensing material originate from the thermally induced lattice expansion and the changes of surface oxygen vacancy of α-Fe2O3 could be reflected from the further monitored Raman scattering signals during acetone gas sensing. Meanwhile, the prepared α-Fe2O3 gas sensor exhibits excellent gas-sensing performance with high response value (Ra/Rg = 27), rapid response/recovery time (1 s/80 s) for 100 ppm acetone gas, and broad response range (5 - 900 ppm) at 183 °C. Strategies described herein could provide a promising approach to obtain gas-sensing materials with excellent performance and unveil the gas-sensing nature for other metal-oxide-based chemiresistors.

Abstract:Comparing to gas ethanol sensors, electrochemical ethanol sensors are promising owing to the low operating temperature, high sensitivity and good accuracy. Common electrochemical ethanol sensors suffer from a general trade-off relationship between sensitivity and upper limit for linear detection. In this work, facile self-oxidized AgCu nano-foam is obtained by simply dealloying of Mg65Ag12.5Cu12.5Y10 metallic glass ribbon in citric acid, which breaks through the trade-off by showing an ultra-high upper linear limit of 1.5 M and good sensitivity of 109.6 mu A mM(-1) cm(-2). Combined experiment and simulation investigations confirm that the ligaments of the AgCu nano-foam is composed of surfaces with interlacing Ag and Cu2O grains that are driven by surface energy, and cores consist of Ag and Cu grains that result from phase separation. Such phase structures, coupled with the geometry merits, lead to fast oxidation dynamics, abundant electroactive sites, good reversibility and stable microstructure, which results in high upper linear limit and a sensitivity improvement of similar to 30 times comparing to Cu nano-foam. This work develops a candidate material for high performance sensing of concentrated ethanol, and verifies a promising strategy to prepare efficient catalysts by multilevel-design of geometry and phase structure.
