Abstract:Effective response to potentially dangerous environmental situations that can arise requires accurate and real time data on the environment that is being monitored. The ability to respond in an appropriate time frame is determined by the sensitivity and response time of the method used for monitoring. Fiber optic sensors have been used and are capable of detecting chemical compounds within an environment; however the sensitivity and response time of this detection method needs to be improved for many sensing applications. Improving these characteristics can be accomplished by designing the structure of the optical fiber sensor to allow increased response time and sensitivity. Through the introduction of new structures and control of these structures, the sensitivity and response time can be designed for a specific application. We have developed a novel porous optical fiber that has potential applications in chemical and biological agent sensing systems. Sensing capabilities of the optical fiber are a result of the structure that is designed into the fiber. The structure of the fiber developed, results of characterization of the fiber and the methods of analysis employed are presented. Methods used to analyze this new fiber optic sensor include nitrogen absorption porosity data, scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy, and optical characterizations. The structure of the optical fiber is produced by controlling the processing parameters during the fiber draw as well as post processing stages. Fabrication methods and the processing steps that are used during the fiber optic production are also presented. Effect of altering processing conditions on the sensor structure is detailed and how this affects the performance of the fiber.

Abstract:Fiber optical intensity sensors are made of optical fibers connected to a miniaturized optical sensor which is based on either a mechanical light valve, a light scattering process, a photoemission or photoabsorption process, or the transmission property of the optical fiber itself. Use of the optical fiber to transmit light to and from the optical sensor makes it possible to construct an electrically passive sensor with remotely located electronic readout capability. Major advantages of this type of sensors are electromagnetic interference immunity, electrical passiveness and safety, miniature size, and ruggedness, In this paper, the large variety of fiber optical intensity sensors reported to date will be classified by their sensing mechanism. Examples will be given for each category of sensors with reported performances.

Abstract:Optical fibers are an excellent transmission medium for light and underpin the infrastructure of the Internet, but generally after fabrication their optical properties cannot be easily modified. Here, we explore the concept of nanomechanical optical fibers where, in addition to the fiber transmission capability, the internal core structure of the fiber can also be controlled through sub-micron mechanical movements. The nanomechanical functionality of such fibers is demonstrated in the form of dual core optical fibers, in which the cores are independently suspended within the fiber. The movement-based optical change is large compared with traditional electro-optical effects and we show that optical switching of light from one core to the other is achieved through moving one core by just 8 nm.

Abstract:This paper reviews distributed discrimination of strain and temperature by use of an optical fiber based on fiber optic nerve systems. The preliminary method based on multiple resonance peaks of the Brillouin gain spectrum in a specially-designed fiber is firstly introduced. The complete discrimination of strain and temperature based on the Brillouin dynamic grating in a polarization maintaining fiber is extensively presented. The basic principle and two experimental schemes of distributed discrimination based on fiber optic nerve systems are demonstrated. The performance of the high discriminative accuracy (0.1 °C–0.3°C and 5 μɛ–12μɛ) and high spatial resolution (∼10 cm) with the effective measurement points of about 50 for a standard system configuration or about 1000 for a modified one will be highly expected in real industry applications.

Abstract:Rayleigh, Brillouin and Raman scatterings in fibers result from the interaction of photons with local material characteristic features like density, temperature and strain. For example an acoustic/mechanical wave generates a dynamic density variation; such a variation may be affected by local temperature, strain, vibration and birefringence. By detecting changes in the amplitude, frequency and phase of light scattered along a fiber, one can realize a distributed fiber sensor for measuring localized temperature, strain, vibration and birefringence over lengths ranging from meters to one hundred kilometers. Such a measurement can be made in the time domain or frequency domain to resolve location information. With coherent detection of the scattered light one can observe changes in birefringence and beat length for fibers and devices. The progress on state of the art technology for sensing performance, in terms of spatial resolution and limitations on sensing length is reviewed. These distributed sensors can be used for disaster prevention in the civil structural monitoring of pipelines, bridges, dams and railroads. A sensor with centimeter spatial resolution and high precision measurement of temperature, strain, vibration and birefringence can find applications in aerospace smart structures, material processing, and the characterization of optical materials and devices.

Abstract:A novel approach for fiber optics 3D shape sensing, applicable to mini-invasive bio-medical devices, is presented. The approach exploits the optical backscatter reflectometry (OBR) and an innovative setup that permits the simultaneous spatial multiplexing of an optical fibers parallel. The result is achieved by means of a custom-made enhanced backscattering fiber whose core is doped with MgO-based nanoparticles (NP). This special NP-doped fiber presents a backscattering-level more than 40 dB higher with respect to a standard SMF-28. The fibers parallel is built to avoid overlap between NP-doped fibers belonging to different branches of the parallel, so that the OBR can distinguish the more intense backscattered signal coming from the NP-doped fiber. The system is tested by fixing, with epoxy glue, 4 NP-doped fibers along the length of an epidural needle. Each couple of opposite fibers senses the strain on a perpendicular direction. The needle is inserted in a custom-made phantom that simulates the spine anatomy. The 3D shape sensing is obtained by converting the measured strain in bending and shape deformation.

Abstract:Two kinds of fiber optic vibration sensors for civil structure vibration monitoring are proposed in this paper. The first is based on the detection of spatial mode speckle of a multi-mode optical fiber. A multi-mode optical fiber, diameter is 200/230 micrometers , is used in the present experiment. The second method uses an e-core two-mode optical fiber. The experiment on a composite beam with an embedded statistical fiber optic sensor and surface mounted e-core two-mode fiber optic sensor are demonstrated. The experimental results show that the two types of the fiber optic vibration sensor have higher sensitivity compared to piezoelectric sensors along with other benefits of fiber optic sensor, including lower cost.

Abstract:Optical fiber sensors present several advantages in relation to other types of sensors. These advantages are essentially related to the optical fiber properties, i.e., small, lightweight, resistant to high temperatures and pressure, electromagnetically passive, among others. Sensing is achieved by exploring the properties of light to obtain measurements of parameters, such as temperature, strain, or angular velocity. In addition, optical fiber sensors can be used to form an Optical Fiber Sensing Network (OFSN) allowing manufacturers to create versatile monitoring solutions with several applications, e.g., periodic monitoring along extensive distances (kilometers), in extreme or hazardous environments, inside structures and engines, in clothes, and for health monitoring and assistance. Most of the literature available on this subject focuses on a specific field of optical sensing applications and details their principles of operation. This paper presents a more broad overview, providing the reader with a literature review that describes the main principles of optical sensing and highlights the versatility, advantages, and different real-world applications of optical sensing. Moreover, it includes an overview and discussion of a less common architecture, where optical sensing and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are integrated to harness the benefits of both worlds.

Abstract:<p>Fiber-optic sensors have developed rapidly because of their excellent sensing performances and abilities to detect in remote and harsh environments. However, on some special occasions with high requirements for sensitivity and resolution, the traditional optical fiber sensing mechanism is difficult to meet the detection requirements. Therefore, it is very necessary to explore new sensor sensitization mechanisms. Vernier effect, as a simple and efficient sensitization method, has been extensively researched and applied in fiber-optic sensors in recent years. This review paper firstly presents the working principles and mechanism of the fiber-optic sensors based on the Vernier effect, and then discusses and classifies their common structures. Furthermore, the research progress and applications of such sensors are summarized and discussed. Finally, the further development direction of the fiber-optic sensors based on the Vernier sensitization mechanism is discussed and prospected.</p>

Abstract:The end of the twentieth century was witness to the merger of several technological disciplines that could eventually revolutionize engineering design philosophy and lead to the creation of intelligence within otherwise inanimate structures. This new technology will endow a structure with senses and the ability to react to its environment and change its state, shape and geometry. The key point for the practical realization of the so-called smart materials is the availability of robust and reliable structurally integrated sensors able to monitor the state of the structure. To this aim, a fiber optic multiparameter sensing system for process and structural health monitoring in concrete structures is presented. The reflectometric technique has been implemented for refractive-index measurements by using as transducer the fiber end /host interface. Results on the capability of the developed sensor to monitor the curing process of thermoset-based composites are presented. The integration with fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) with the aim to perform temperature and strain measurements has been discussed. Two low-cost intensity-based demodulation techniques for FBGs interrogation have been developed and tested.

Abstract:A new sort of fiber optic sensor has been designed. The variation of the refractive index of the resin surrounding the embedded fiber optic was observed by measuring the speckle spatial spectrum at the end-face of the fiber optic, The normalized speckle spatial spectrum is given which depends upon the variation of the refractive index which occurs during the resin cure process. The approximate relation between the refractive index and cutoff frequency is given. The instrumental error of the sensor was estimated by measuring to the refractive index of a matching liquid. The resin cure experimental results are given as measured by the fiber optic sensor. This sort of fiber optic sensor was found to be able to detect the gel point and the end point of the cure process. The fiber optic maintains the wave-guide performance after cure sensing; it was pointed out that this sensor could also be used to sense factors such as temperature and vibration which perturb the structures.

Abstract:Structurally integrated optical fiber sensors form the basis for smart structure technology. Over the past decade a variety of sensor configurations have been developed for measurement of strains and deformations in structures. Strains and deformations alter the refractive index and the geometry of the optical fiber material. These changes perturb the intensity, phase, and polarization of the light-wave propagating along the probing fiber. The optical perturbations are detected for the determination of strain. The research presented here describes the development of a new optical fiber sensor system for measurement of structural strains based on white light interferometry. An optical switch provides for multiplexing of strain signals from various locations in the structure. Redundant Bragg grating type fiber optic sensors as well as strain gauges were employed for comparison and verification of strain signals as measured by the new system. The system provides capability for distributed sensing of strains in large structures.

Abstract:This paper reviews a wide variety of fiber-optic microstructure (FOM) sensors, such as fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors, long-period fiber grating (LPFG) sensors, Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) sensors, Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) sensors, Michelson interferometer (MI) sensors, and Sagnac interferometer (SI) sensors. Each FOM sensor has been introduced in the terms of structure types, fabrication methods, and their sensing applications. In addition, the sensing characteristics of different structures under the same type of FOM sensor are compared, and the sensing characteristics of the all FOM sensors, including advantages, disadvantages, and main sensing parameters, are summarized. We also discuss the future development of FOM sensors.

Abstract:In the area of fiber-optic sensors (FOSs), the past decade witnessed great efforts to challenge the thermal-noise-level sensing resolution for passive FOS. Several attempts were reported claiming the arrival of thermal-noise-level resolution, while the realization of thermal-noise-level resolution for passive FOSs is still controversial and challenging. In this paper, an ultrahigh-resolution FOS system is presented with a sensing resolution better than existing high-resolution passive FOSs. A fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer as the sensing element is interrogated with an ultra-stable probe laser by using the Pound-Drever-Hall technique. Both strain and temperature measurements are carried out to validate the performance of the sensor. The measured noise floor agrees with the theoretical thermal noise level very well.

Abstract:There are many conventional methods which may be used to monitor the health of structures — of which vibration monitoring is effective and can be used for special structures such as aircraft wings. A smart structure system based on fiber optic vibration sensors has been developed to monitor structural damage. A method based on the detection of spatial speckle of a multimode optical fiber is described. A multimode optical fiber with a diameter of 200/230 μm is used in the present experiment. The theoretical analysis and the experimental tests are described. The fiber optic sensors have been embedded in the carbon/epoxy composite specimens and surface mounted on the surface of aluminum specimens. Furthermore, experiments to examine the different types of damage to these specimens have been carried out. The results show that this kind of multimode fiber optic sensor can be used in the non-destructive evaluation of smart materials.
Nanometer Resolution Fiber-Optic-Based Medical Pressure and Temperature-Measurement System

Abstract:A prototype, nanometre resolution, single-mode, fibre-based, interferometric medical pressure and temperature sensor system, exploiting low-coherence signal recovery, is demonstrated. These sensors have been designed in such a way that they have similar optical path differences and, hence, the problems associated with multiplexing are greatly reduced. For the pressure sensor, a range to resolution of approximately 6.7 x 10(3):1 and an overall measurement accuracy of better than +/-1% over a pressure range of 0-360 mmHg have been achieved. For the temperature sensor, a measurement resolution of 0.006-degrees-C and a 1% span linearity over a temperature range of 27.3-62.5-degrees-C have been achieved. The performance of both sensors meets or exceeds established medical requirements and the dimensions of the probes are compatible with commercial electric probes, hence this new sensor system is expected to be a practical approach for many medical applications after further engineering.
