"Rite" in A Dream of Red Mansions from the Perspective of Modern Culture

Abstract:As for the modern people,who live under the influences of modern culture and traditional culture,tracing back to the classics actually implies they expect more for the future.In ancient China,the rulers established so-called "rite order",which has its advantages and disadvantages.This paper chooses three perspectives,the younger’s obedience to the elder,male’s superiority to female and libation ceremonies,which are typical of the great Chinese classic novel,A Dream of Red Mansions,to stand for the basic order,sexual order and courtesy system in feudal China respectively,and then after a close re-examination of the relevant plots in the novel,puts forward three points of view correspondingly: first,adults’ childrenization is a common phenomenon in the novel;second,there is no trail of feminism,an important trait of modern culture,in the novel;third,the complicated procedure in libation ceremonies is not equal to formalism in a general sense,but expresses people’s worship of ancestors.And it also concludes that the traditional Chinese value system,whose nucleus is "rite",does not decline and won’t decline.
