Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) demonstrate great potential in electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) which has profound effects in environmental protection and renewable energy. Herein, a series of metal single atoms supported on MoS2 nanolayers (M@MoS2 , M= Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Ru, Pd, Pt) is systemically evaluated as CO2 RR catalysts by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results certified that M@MoS 2 are selective catalysts for CO2RR to produce CH4 . Fe@MoS2 , Co@MoS2 , Ni@MoS2 , and Pt@MoS2 yield a low limiting potential of -0.39V, -0.24V, -0.45V, and -0.50V, respectively. The binding energy of key intermediates *HCOO is identified as the effective reactivity descriptor to screen the promising CO2RR catalysts for M@MoS2 . Moreover, single atom supported on other chalcogenides (MoSe2 , WS2 , WSe2 ) also possesses good potential for CO2RR. The current study provides unique insights on working mechanism of SAC in CO2RR and verifies the important tunable effects of two-dimensional materials.

Abstract:Strategies for harmonizing the construction of an active site and the building of electron transport for a hybrid MoS2 catalyst are crucial for its application in electrochemical reactions. In this work, an accurate and facile hydrothermal strategy was proposed to fabricate the active center of Co-O-Mo on a supported MoS2 catalyst by forming a CoMoSO phase on the edge of MoS2, yielding (Co-O)x- MoSy (x = 0, 0.3, 0.6, 1, 1.5, or 2.1). The results show that the electrochemical performances (hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and electrochemical degradation) of the yielded MoS2-based catalysts were positively correlated with the Co-O bonds, verifying the significant role of Co-O- Mo as the active center. The fabricated (Co-O)-MoS0.9 presented an extremely low overpotential and Tafel slope in both HER and OER, and it also demonstrated excellent BPA removal in the electrochemical degradation reaction. As compared with the Co-Mo-S configuration, the configuration of Co-O-Mo not only serves as the active center but also provides a conducting channel to facilitate electron conductivity with more accessible charge transfer at the electrode/electrolyte interface, which is favorable for electrocatalytic reaction. This work offers a new perspective for the active mechanism of metallic-heteroatom-dopant electrocatalysts and further boosts research on the development of noble/non-noble hybrid electrocatalysts in the future.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have aroused significant interest in heterogeneous catalysis in recent years because of their high catalytic selectivity and tunable activity in various chemical reactions. Herein, non-noble metal SACs with 3d-series metal single atoms (M1) (M = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) supported on MoS2 are computationally screened by using first-principles quantum-chemical theory. The Ni1/MoS2 catalyst is found to be the most stable among those 3d-series SACs due to the optimal binding energy. In order to provide a fundamental understanding of the intrinsic stability and bonding interaction between the metal single atoms and MoS2 support, the electronic structure, including the spin density populations, charge density difference (CDD), electron localization function (ELF), band structure, density of states (DOS), and crystal orbital Hamiltonian populations (COHP) are systematically examined. The solid-state quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) is also applied to further characterize the Ni—S and Mo—S covalent and ionic bonding nature between the metal single atoms and support. It is found that in addition to Ni—S bonding, there exists significant Ni—Mo bonding that is critical for the electronic structure, stability, and catalytic properties of Ni1/MoS2 catalyst. As a typical application of this Ni1/MoS2 catalyst, the electrocatalytic mechanism and reaction pathway of CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) on Ni1/MoS2 catalyst have been investigated. The MoS2-supported Ni single atoms are found to exhibit high catalytic activity for CO2RR to methanol. The calculational results provide theoretical insights towards the design of highly efficient SACs on MoS2-based functional materials.

Abstract:CO oxidation on Zn doped Platinum-based transition metal sulfides (Zn/PtX2, X=S, Se, Te) was systematically explored by density functional theory calculations. The geometric stability, electronic structure and catalytic properties of the three Zn/PtX2 catalysts were studied. CO oxidation on Zn/PtX2 along the Langmuir-Hinshelwood and Eley-Rideal mechanisms has been comparatively demonstrated. It is found that surface defect can stabilize Zn single atom, and the oxidation of CO on Zn/PtX2 is facilitated along the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism. The dissociation of OOCO intermediate of Zn/PtSe2 catalyst is the rate-limiting step with an energy barrier of 0.27 eV. This work demonstrates that Zn single atoms on suitable substrate possess satisfied CO oxidation activity.

Abstract:Defective (missing S atoms) and nonmetal (C- and N-) doped MoS2 monolayers in the 2H and 1T′ phases have been evaluated for catalyzing CO oxidation based on first-principles calculations. For the reaction 2CO + O2 → 2CO2, the oxidization of the first CO molecule is fairly easy and sometimes is even spontaneous, as the O2 molecule is highly activated or dissociates upon adsorption. However, for the defective (2H-), C-doped (1T′-), and N-doped (2H- and 1T′-) MoS2 monolayers, the remaining O* adatom often refuses to react with other CO molecules and is hard to be removed (barrier > 1.20 eV). Only when over the C-doped 2H- and defective 1T′-MoS2 monolayers, the removal of the second O* adatom requires to overcome moderate barriers (0.74 and 0.88 eV, respectively) by reacting with another CO molecule via the Eley–Rideal mechanism and the catalysts are recovered. The barriers can be further reduced by applying either tensile or compressive strain to the MoS2 nanosheet. In contrast, the Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanism is followed over the metal-containing MoS2 nanosheets, as the bigger size of metal dopants allow the co-adsorption of CO and O2. Therefore, the C-doped 2H- and defective 1T′-MoS2 monolayers are promising nonmetal-doped catalysts for CO oxidation.
Functional Mos2 by the Co/Ni Doping As the Catalyst for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Since the discovery of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity of the metal phthalocyanine, the great enthusiasm is ignited for searching the catalysts with low price replacing Pt-based catalysts. Here, the catalytic activities for the ORR on the Co or Ni doped MoS2 are studied by using density-functional theory (DFT). It is found that Co/MoS2 resembles FeN4 active site while Ni/MoS2 is similar with CoN4 active site. In details, for Co/MoS2, under the acid medium, the rate-determining step (RDS) is located at the second H2O formation with a barrier of 1.49 eV. While under the alkaline medium, RDS is the final OH- formation with the barrier of 0.94 eV. For Ni/MoS2, under the acid medium, the RDS is the same as that of Co/MoS2 with a barrier of 0.87 eV. However, RDS is the O formation with the barrier of 0.92 eV under the alkaline medium. Furthermore, due to the intact HOOH adsorption, it is expected that the 2e- ORR is present on Ni/MoS2, which means inferior activity compared with Co/MoS2. Our calculation demonstrates the ability to functionalize inert materials for the ORR and provides new materials to design effective Pt-free catalysts for fuel-cell technology. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The grand challenge in the development of atomically dispersed metallic catalysts is their low metal-atom loading density, uncontrollable localization and ambiguous interactions with supports, posing difficulty in maximizing their catalytic performance. Here, we achieve an interface catalyst consisting of atomic cobalt array covalently bound to distorted 1T MoS2 nanosheets (SA Co-D 1T MoS2). The phase of MoS2 transforming from 2H to D-1T, induced by strain from lattice mismatch and formation of Co-S covalent bond between Co and MoS2 during the assembly, is found to be essential to form the highly active single-atom array catalyst. SA Co-D 1T MoS2 achieves Pt-like activity toward HER and high long-term stability. Active-site blocking experiment together with density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the superior catalytic behaviour is associated with an ensemble effect via the synergy of Co adatom and S of the D-1T MoS2 support by tuning hydrogen binding mode at the interface.

Abstract:The problem of CO oxidation in incomplete combustion from steel industry is that the deactivation of Pt-based catalysts by SO 2 . Here, we have elaborately designed a series of Mo-decorated 0.1 wt.% Pt/TiO 2 catalyst (Pt/Mo/Ti) catalyst. The catalytic test showed that the Pt/3Mo/Ti catalyst achieved 100 % CO conversion above 200 °C and maintained excellent long-term catalytic stability in the presence of SO 2 . The enhancement in SO 2 -tolerance ability was due to the suitable Brønsted acidity to weaken the SO 2 adsorption and strong charge transfer ability to reduce the oxidation of SO 2 to SO 3 . Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) suggests that the Pt-O-Mo species are present in atomically dispersed form in the Pt/3Mo/Ti catalyst. The surface O = MoO 4 sites with terminal Mo = O bond prevented SO 2 from reacting with platinum, thus inhibiting its migration to TiO 2 and TiOSO 4 formation. We also revealed the strong interaction between platinum and molybdenum and characterized the CO oxidation pathway in the presence of SO 2 . Abstract:The development of active water oxidation catalysts for water splitting has stimulated considerable interest. Herein, the design and building of single atom Co sites using a supramolecular tailoring strategy are reported, that is, the introduction of pillar[4]arene[1]quinone (P4A1Q) permits mononuclear Co species stereoelectronically assembled on MoS2 matrix to construct an atomically dispersed MoS2@Co catalyst with modulated local electronic structure, definite chemical environment and enhanced oxygen evolution reaction performance. Theoretical calculations indicate that immsobilized single-Co sites exhibit an optimized adsorption capability of oxygen-containing intermediates, endowing the catalyst an excellent electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction activity, with a low overpotential of 370 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) and a small Tafel slope of 90 mV dec(-1). The extendable potential of this strategy to other electrocatalysts such as MoS2@Ni and MoS2@Zn, and other applications such as the hydrogen evolution reaction was also demonstrated. This study affords new insights into the rational design of single metal atom systems with enhanced electrocatalytic performance.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts have attracted wide attention due to the maximum usage of single atom and the great potential to achieve high activity and selectivity for CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). CO2RR on the MoS2 supported single cobalt atom (Co/MoS2) monolayer is performed by using the first-principles simulation, and it is found that cobalt atom prefers to dispersedly anchor on MoS2 support as single atom. According to the transition state calculation for the various possible reaction pathways together with the reaction rate constants calculation, the preferable CO2RR pathway is the reverse water gas conversion (RWGS) and CO hydrogenation pathway with the rate-limiting step of CO hydrogenation into formyl (HCO). The entire reaction pathway can be summarized as *CO2 -> *CO -> *CHO -> *CH2O -> *CH2OH and *CH3O -> CH3OH. The electronic structures analysis indicates that Co adatom induced gap states play an important role for CO2 activation and reduction. Therefore, the single cobalt atom supported on MoS2 monolayer is an efficient single atom catalyst for CO2 activation and conversion, and the current work may shed light on the development of single atom catalysts to CO2 reduction.

Abstract:The mechanism of CO oxidation on two-dimensional porphyrin sheet (TDPS)-supported single atom manganese was studied using density functional theory with dispersion (DFT-D). The molecular dynamics (MD) simulation based on the first principles has been used for confirming Mn–TDPS stability. The energetic calculations indicated that CO and O2 were favorable to co-adsorb at the active center. Eley–Rideal, Langmuir–Hinshelwood (LH), and tri-molecular Eley–Rideal (TER) mechanisms were used to investigate the reaction pathways of CO oxidation on the Mn–TDPS. Results indicated that the LH and TER reaction mechanisms were feasible due to the small energy barrier of the rate-determining step. Moreover, the oxidation states of the active center of Mn–TDPS affected the reaction barrier and reaction heat, which was unfavorable for CO oxidation in Mn–TDPS. These results findings suggested that Mn–TDPS could be a high activity catalyst for CO oxidation.

Abstract:Designed Co‐MoS2 single‐atom catalyst exhibits robust activity and high selectivity for CO2 methanation. This can be attributed to the efficient activation of CO2 and suppression of HER by the electron‐deficient state of Co atom (Coδ+), its strong adsorption of intermediates, and the prevention of C2 product formation through dispersed monatomic active sites. Methane, the simplest hydrocarbon, has a high energy density and is widely used as chemical feedstocks or fuels. Converting CO2 to methane through electrochemical reduction offers a promising strategy for managing the global carbon balance, but is a challenge due to the lack of effective electrocatalysts. Herein, the Co single atom catalyst supported by MoS2 antisite defect (Co‐MoS2) is designed from both the activity and selectivity aspects. By virtue of i) moderately electron‐deficient state (Coδ+) ensuring efficient CO2 activation and HER suppression; ii) the strong adsorption capability for intermediate enhancing selectivity; iii) the single atomic active site avoiding the formation of C2 products, Co‐MoS2 could selectively convert CO2 to CH4 with a limiting potential of −0.45 V vs. RHE, which outperforms most of the present catalysts, and is expected to be a promising substitution for Cu‐based catalysts.

Abstract:Cuprous oxide (Cu2O), as a common transition metal semiconductor material, has found extensive applications and research in the field of catalysis due to its unique physicochemical properties. To improve its catalytic performance, introducing carriers to form composite materials with Cu2O has proven to be a promising strategy for enhancing its stability, activity, and selectivity. In this study, we introduced MoS2 to form a composite material with Cu-Cu2O, investigating the impact of MoS2 on the activity of Cu-Cu2O in selective alcohol oxidation. The results demonstrate a significant improvement in the catalytic activity of Cu-Cu2O upon the introduction of MoS2. Further investigations substantiate the close correlation between the enhanced activity of Cu-Cu2O and the interaction with thin layered MoS2 flakes. The quantity of the thin layered MoS2 is small but its impact on the catalytic activity is significant. It induces changes in the band and electronic structures of Cu-Cu2O, and the changes facilitate the activation of O2 and electron transfer in the oxidation, and thus promote the catalysis.

Abstract:Atomically dispersed metals on metal oxide supports are a rapidly growing class of catalysts. Developing an understanding of where and how the metals are bonded to the supports is challenging because support surfaces are heterogeneous, and most reports lack a detailed consideration of these points. Herein, we report two atomically dispersed CO oxidation catalysts having markedly different metal-support interactions: platinum in the first layer of crystalline MgO powder and platinum in the second layer of this support. Structural models have been determined on the basis of data and computations, including those determined by extended X-ray absorption fine structure and X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopies, infrared spectroscopy of adsorbed CO, and scanning transmission electron microscopy. The data demonstrate the transformation of surface to subsurface platinum as the temperature of sample calcination increased. Catalyst performance data demonstrate the lower activity but greater stability of the subsurface platinum than of the surface platinum.

Abstract:The ability to oxidize CO at relatively low temperature is barely satisfactory for pure SmMn2O5 (SMO) catalysts. While loading precious metals like platinum nanoclusters on mullite SMO is an effective approach to enhance its catalytic performance, the high cost of noble metals has limited its large scale application. In this work, we systematically study an alternative approach to composite catalyst formation by loading non-precious metal oxides MOx (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) onto SMO mullite for CO oxidation. Inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) analyses show that composite catalysts are successfully formed by loading MOx nanoparticles at a content of approximate to 0.75 wt% through the deposition precipitation (DP) method. Except for FeOx, MOx loaded samples in general exhibit much higher reaction rates of CO oxidation than bare SMO especially at the temperature range below 100 degrees C. The promoted activity for MOx/SMO composites can be attributed to the improved reducibility of adsorbed oxygen (O-ads) and the increased oxidation state of Mn cations at the interface. Such behavior accelerates the decomposition of carbonates, as indicated by the H-2 temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy results. We demonstrate that the best catalytic performance of the CuOx/SMO composite also stems from the additional CO adsorption on the CuOx sites. The work presented herein provides a method to enhance the CO oxidation performance of SMO and helps in understanding the oxidation reaction mechanism involving mullites with loaded transition metal oxides (TMOs).

Abstract:CO oxidation is a widely used model system for understanding fundamental aspects of heterogeneous catalysis. While platinum (Pt) continues to be a reference material for CO oxidation catalysis, poisoning of Pt catalysts presents a critical issue that blocks reaction sites and impedes subsequent reaction steps. Fabrication of CO poison-free Pt catalysts remains a great challenge due to its CO-philic nature. Herein, we report a Pt based catalyst to effectively tackle CO poisoning by tightly anchoring Pt sub-nanoclusters onto Mn-mullite oxide (SmMn2O5) via atomic layer deposition. Superior CO oxidation activity has been observed with a significantly lowered light-off temperature and apparent activation energy. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy analysis, oxygen isotope experiments and density functional theory calculations confirm that the low-temperature activity originates from active oxygen atom sources at the bifunctional interface structure.

Abstract:Platinum-based catalysts are critical to several chemical processes, but their efficiency is not satisfying enough in some cases, because only the surface active-site atoms participate in the reaction. Henceforth, catalysts with single-atom dispersions are highly desirable to maximize their mass efficiency, but fabricating these structures using a controllable method is still challenging. Most previous studies have focused on crystalline materials. However, amorphous materials may have enhanced performance due to their distorted and isotropic nature with numerous defects. Here reported is the facile synthesis of an atomically dispersed catalyst that consists of single Pt atoms and amorphous Fe2O3 nanosheets. Rational control can regulate the morphology from single atom clusters to sub-nanoparticles. Density functional theory calculations show the synergistic effect resulted from the strong binding and stabilization of single Pt atoms with the strong metal-support interaction between the in situ locally anchored Pt atoms and Fe2O3 lead to a weak CO adsorption. Moreover, the distorted amorphous Fe2O3 with O vacancies is beneficial for the activation of O-2, which further facilitates CO oxidation on nearby Pt sites or interface sites between Pt and Fe2O3, resulting in the extremely high performance for CO oxidation of the atomic catalyst.
