Abstract:A facile solvothermal method coupled with an annealing strategy is developed to synthesize Fe 3 O 4 /carbon (Fe 3 O 4 @C) magnetic composite microstructures with different morphologies, including flower-like, hollow spheres and egg-like. The unique multiporous and hollow structure of the as-prepared hierarchical Fe 3 O 4 @C hollow microsphere results in an appealing performance as an absorber of Cr(VI) ions in aqueous solution, delivering a high capacity of ~ 197.2 mg/g. Meanwhile, the magnetic Fe 3 O 4 ‘‘core’’ in the hierarchical microstructures can be easily separated from aqueous systems by magnetic separation. Furthermore, the carbon layers effectively prevent the aggregation of magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. The excellent absorbing ability of Cr(VI) ions and easy separation process strongly suggest that the Fe 3 O 4 @C magnetic microstructures would have a great potential as adsorbing materials in the large-scale application in environmental purification.

Abstract:A novel magnetic NiFe2O4/Zn-Al layered double hydroxide intercalated with EDTA composite (NiFe2O4/ZnAl-EDTA LDH) was prepared through modified coprecipitation method and employed for adsorptive removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. The adsorbents were characterized using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Factors affecting the Cr(VI) adsorption, such as initial solution pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial Cr(VI) concentration, temperature and coexisting ions, were studied systematically. Experiments results show that the magnetic NiFe2O4/ZnAl-EDTA LDH exhibits high adsorption efficiency within a wide pH range of 3.0–7.0 (R>80% at Cr(VI) concentration 50mgL−1, contact time 360min, and adsorbent dosage 2g/L) and quick separation property. The adsorption process is fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The maximum theoretical adsorption capacity is found to be 77.22mgg−1 at pH 6.0 and 318K. The positive ΔH value (2.907kJmol−1) and negative ΔG value (−4.722kJmol−1) at 298–318K reveals that the adsorption process is feasible, spontaneous and endothermic. Coexisting anions (PO43-, SO42−, CO32−, HCO3−, Cl−, and NO3−) have no significant effect on Cr(VI) removal. The mechanism study indicates that the adsorption of Cr(VI) onto NiFe2O4/ZnAl-EDTA LDH mainly involves electrostatic attraction and ion exchange interaction. It is interesting to note that a proportion of Cr(VI) adsorbed on the adsorbent surface are reduced to Cr(III) during the adsorption process. Results from this study demonstrate the potential utility of the magnetic NiFe2O4/ZnAl-EDTA LDH that could be developed into a viable technology for efficient removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution.
Effective adsorption and removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater using magnetic composites prepared by synergistic effect of polypyrrole and covalent organic frameworks

Abstract:Cr(VI) as a toxic heavy metal can endanger human physical and mental health. The adsorption method has been widely used for Cr(VI) removal due to its advantages of cost-effectiveness and simplicity of operation. However, the key to Cr(VI) removal by adsorption lies in the construction of adsorption active sites. In this study, Fe 3 O 4 @COF-MT@PPy magnetic composites were prepared by the Schiff base method and in situ polymerisation to construct adsorbents with high specific surface area and abundant amino active sites for the removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater. The TEM and BET results showed that PPy was successfully encapsulated on the Fe 3 O 4 @COF-MT material, and the COF layer provided sites for the polymerisation of PPy, which resulted in a large specific surface area (400.93 m 2 /g) for Fe 3 O 4 @COF-MT@PPy, thus providing more adsorption sites. The VSM results showed that the prepared composites have good magnetic properties (13.8 emu/g) and are easy to separate from aqueous solutions. Encouragingly, the Fe 3 O 4 @COF-MT@PPy composites showed excellent adsorption performance for Cr(VI) in aqueous solution. The maximum adsorption capacity of the material for Cr(VI) was 429.18 mg/g at 298 K, which was much higher than Fe 3 O 4 @COF-MT with Fe 3 O 4 @PPy. Adsorption kinetics and isotherm analyses showed that the adsorption process was more in line with the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models. The Fe 3 O 4 @COF-MT@PPy composites were able to maintain high adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) after five regenerations, which showed good reusability. In addition, interfering ion experiments demonstrated the selective adsorption of Fe 3 O 4 @COF-MT@PPy on Cr(VI). Using XPS for the analysis, it can be speculated that the adsorption mechanism is due to the abundant amino groups on the surface of the adsorbent firstly exerting electrostatic attraction and ion-exchange effect on the anion Cr(VI), and then the protonated amino groups reduce part of the Cr(VI) to Cr(III), and finally adsorb the Cr(III) on the surface of the material by chelation. Therefore, the recyclable Fe 3 O 4 @COF-MT@PPy has a good potential for adsorption of Cr-containing wastewater.

Abstract:In this work, a surfactant-functionalized magnetic adsorbent (Fe3O4@/CTAB) was prepared by simple solvothermal method and applied to adsorb Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. It exhibited excellent adsorption performance and recyclability mainly due to the tunable pores and plenty surface active sites of the structure, and electrostatic attraction and reduction of CTAB modifier. It had excellent adsorption capacity in a wide pH range of 1.0-11.0, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 932.1 mg g-1 at pH 2.0. The adsorption reached equilibrium at contact time of 240 min. Adsorption capacity increased with the increase of initial Cr(VI) concentration. High valence coexisting ions had negative effects on adsorption for both anions and cations. The adsorption of Cr(VI) by Fe3O4@/CTAB is mainly chemisorption and monolayer adsorption, and the adsorption process is a spontaneous endothermic process. This study provided a valuable strategy and path for designing and developing effective MOF-based multifunctional adsorbents.
Investigation of the Adsorption Process of Chromium (VI) Ions from Petrochemical Wastewater Using Nanomagnetic Carbon Materials

Abstract:Magnetic mesoporous carbon (MMC) and magnetic activated carbon (MAC) are good functionalized carbon materials to use when applying environmental techniques. In this work, a series of efficient magnetic composite adsorbents containing Fe3O4 and carbon were prepared successfully and used for the adsorption of Cr(VI) ions in petrochemical wastewater. The morphology and structure of these magnetic adsorbents were characterized with FTIR, TG, XRD, VSM, BET, and SEM technologies. The effect of different factors, such as pH, adsorption time, initial Cr(VI) ions’ concentration, Fe3O4 loading, and adsorption time, on the adsorption behavior were discussed. The results showed that the 8%Fe3O4@MMC adsorbent exhibited a high removal rate, reutilization, and large adsorption capacity. The corresponding adsorption capacity and removal rate could reach 132.80 mg·g−1 and 99.60% when the pH value, adsorption time, and initial Cr(VI) ions’ concentration were 2, 180 min, and 80 mg·L−1 at 298 K. Four kinds of adsorption isotherm models were used for fitting the experimental data by the 8%Fe3O4@MMC adsorbent at different temperatures in detail, and a kinetic model and thermodynamic analysis also were performed carefully. The reutilization performance was investigated, and the Fe3O4@MMC adsorbent exhibited greater advantage in the adsorption of Cr(VI) ions. These good performances can be attributed to a unique uniform pore structure, different crystalline phases of Fe3O4 particles, and adsorption potential rule. Hence, the 8%Fe3O4@MMC adsorbent can be used in industrial petrochemical wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The plating industry is one of the causes of hexavalent chromium Cr (VI) pollution in surface water, raising problems for human health and other living things. In this study, we synthesized CoFe 2 O 4 magnetic nanoparticles and coated them with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), a commonly used cationic surfactant, to form CTAB/CoFe 2 O 4 magnetic nanocomposite for Cr (VI) adsorptive removal application from aqueous solution. Characteristic properties of CTAB/CoFe 2 O 4 were examined using scanning electron spectrometry, surface area apparatus, X-ray diffractometer, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, zeta potential analyzer, and vibrating sample magnetometer. The CTAB/CoFe 2 O 4 had superparamagnetic properties, being easily isolated from an aqueous solution and well regenerated by an external magnet. Besides, the CTAB molecules anchored onto the Co 2 FeO 4 nanoparticle surfaces could increase the positive charge and thus facilitate the electrostatic interaction with the Cr (VI) anions. Accordingly, the CTAB/CoFe 2 O 4 reached the Cr (VI) adsorption efficiency of 89%, two times higher than the pure CoFe 2 O 4 , at an optimal pH of 2, an adsorbent dose of 1 g/L, and an initial Cr (VI) concentration of 10 mg/L. The CTAB/CoFe 2 O 4 magnetic nanocomposite would promise a high potential for Cr (VI) treatment from plating wastewater with simple separation, good adsorption capacity, and an inexpensive, nontoxic production process.

Abstract:Due to the merits of their high adsorption and convenient separation, magnetic graphene-based composites have become a promising adsorbent in terms of wastewater treatment. However, recycling and regeneration properties of magnetic graphene-based composites are still a conundrum, which remains to be resolved. Here, Fe3O4/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) (Fe3O4/RGO) nanocomposites were synthesized by one-step solvent-thermal reduction route and used as adsorbents for water purification. It was encouraging to find that the nanocomposites possessed many intriguing properties in removing of Cr(VI) ions, including high adsorption efficiency and excellent recycling and regeneration property. The results indicated that the magnetic separation process of the Fe3O4/RGO nanocomposites only took less than 5 s and the maximum removal efficiency of Cr(VI) reached 99.9% under the optimum experimental conditions. Most significantly, the adsorption rate of Cr(VI) can still be as high as 98.13% after 10 cycles and the single recycle quality of the nanocomposites can maintain at more than 80%. As a result, the Fe3O4/RGO nanocomposites could be a potential adsorbent for removing heavy metal ions effectively, especially in environmental protection and restoration.

Abstract:A novel sorbent Co-Al-LDH@CS/Fe3O4 was synthesized in this learning for the elimination of Pb (II) and Cr (VI) from water using Co-Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as precursors, combined with cross-linked compounds of magnetically interspersed chitosan (CS) and cystamine. The successful synthesis of the adsorbent Co-Al-LDH@CS/Fe3O4 was demonstrated by SEM, FTIR, XRD and XPS characterization. The maximum adsorption capacities of Co-Al-LDH@CS/Fe3O4 at 25 °C were 558.84 and 710.79 mg/g for Pb (II) (pH = 6) and Cr (VI) (pH = 4), respectively. The sorption kinetics prove that the sorption is chemisorption and the rate-limiting step is exterior dispersion. The adsorption isotherms indicate that the sorption process is an irreversible process with positive synergistic effects at multiple sites. Thermodynamic studies show that Pb (II)/Cr (VI) sorption is spontaneous and irreversible in the process. Further, Co-Al-LDH@CS/Fe3O4 also possesses a good selectivity and reusability (5 cycles) for Pb (II) and Cr (VI). The DFT calculations revealed that -SH and –NH2 on the adsorbent surface have a stronger affinity for Pb (II) and Cr (VI).
Efficient Removal of Cr(VI) Ions in Petrochemical Wastewater Using Fe3O4@Saccharomyces cerevisiae Magnetic Nanocomposite

Abstract:Saccharomyces cerevisiae (SC) is a widely available biobased source for function material. In this work, a kind of new efficient magnetic composite adsorbent containing Fe3O4 and SC was prepared successfully and used for the removal of Cr(VI) ions in petrochemical wastewater. The morphology and structure of this magnetic adsorbent were characterized with FT-IR, TG, XRD, VSM, SEM and XPS. The effect of the different factors such as pH, adsorption time, initial Cr(VI) ions concentration and adsorption temperature on the adsorption behavior were investigated. The results showed that 10%-Fe3O4@SC exhibited high removal rate, reutilization and large removal capacity. The corresponding removal capacity and removal rate could reach 128.03 mg/g and 96.02% when the pH value was 2, adsorption time was 180 min, and initial Cr(VI) ions concentration were 80 mg/L at 298 K. The kinetics followed the pseudo-first-order, which indicated that the adsorption behavior of 10%-Fe3O4@SC for Cr(VI) ions belonged to the physical adsorption and chemical adsorption co-existence. The thermodynamic study showed that the adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic. It still showed better adsorption performance and reutilization after the fifth adsorption-desorption experiment. The possible mechanism of Cr(VI) ions adsorption onto the 10%-Fe3O4@SC magnetic adsorbent has been discussed. Hence, this new adsorbent will be a candidate for industry-level applications in petrochemical wastewater containing Cr(VI) ions.

Abstract:The removal of a toxic contaminant like Cr(VI) from the water via green adsorbents like biochar and activated carbon is an eco-friendly technique. In this paper, using commercial activated carbon as a raw material, magnetic ferric oxide/activated carbon (Fe 3 O 4 @AC) was prepared by the chemical co-precipitation method, and Cr(VI) adsorption in water was applied. The synthesized materials were characterized by advanced characterization techniques including XRD, BET, FT-IR, and XPS. The effects of initial Cr(VI) concentration, temperature, and adsorption time on the adsorption effect of Cr(VI) were evaluated. Results illustrated that the maximum Cr(VI) adsorption achieved by Fe 3 O 4 @AC was 45.3 mg/g, with a removal rate of 88.8% at the optimum pH of 2.0 and an adsorption time of 12 h. Under these conditions, Cr(VI) adsorption by Fe 3 O 4 @AC fits the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (PSO) and Langmuir isotherm model and is a spontaneous, endothermic, and irreversible process. The results of BET, XRD, FT-IR, and XPS characterization analysis of Cr(VI) before and after adsorption suggested that the adsorption mechanism of Fe 3 O 4 @AC is mainly based on chemisorption, supplemented by physical adsorption, accompanied by electrostatic attraction and complexation.

Abstract:With the increase of hexavalent Cr(VI) wastewater discharged from industrial production, it seriously pollutes water bodies and poses a risk to human health. Adsorption is used as an effective means to treat Cr(VI), but its effectiveness is affected by pH, and the adsorption performance decreases when acidity is strong. Furthermore, research on the mechanism of Cr(VI) adsorption using DFT calculations needs to be developed. This study focuses on the development of magnetically responsive core–shell nano-ion imprinted materials (Fe3O4@GO@IIP) through magnetic separation and surface imprinting techniques. Characterization techniques including FT-IR, XRD, and EDS confirmed the core–shell nanostructure of Fe3O4@GO@IIP. Batch adsorption experiments and model simulations demonstrated the exceptional adsorption capacity of Fe3O4@GO@IIP for Cr(VI) in strongly acidic solutions (pH = 1), reaching a maximum of 89.18 mg/g. The adsorption mechanism was elucidated through XPS and DFT calculations, revealing that Fe3O4@GO@IIP operates through electrostatic interactions and chemical adsorption, with charge transfer dynamics quantified during the process. This research provides new insights for addressing Cr(VI) treatment in highly acidic environments.

A novel superparamagnetic micro-nano-bio-adsorbent PDA/Fe3O4/BC for removal of hexavalent chromium ions from simulated and electroplating wastewater

Abstract:In order to improve the adsorption efficiency of the adsorbent and solve the problem of separation difficulty, a novel superparamagnetic micro-nano-bio-adsorbent (PDA/Fe3O4/BC) was prepared by in situ self-assembly of polydopamine (PDA). The results of scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) characterization showed that the size of bio-adsorbent was about 200 nm. PDA and Fe3O4 modifications increased the specific surface area of adsorbent, changed the surface functional group of biochar (BC), and made the adsorbent have super-high magnetization (294.76 emu g-1). PDA/Fe3O4/BC was applied to treat Cr wastewater. The results show that the adsorption of Cr by PDA/Fe3O4/BC includes single-layer and multilayer adsorption. The adsorption follows the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption is spontaneous and endothermic, and its maximum adsorption capacity and activation energy are 25.25 mg g-1 at 318 K and 23.108 kJ mol-1, respectively. After adsorption treatment, PDA/Fe3O4/BC still possesses high magnetization (233.04 emu g-1). PDA/Fe3O4/BC can treat actual electroplating wastewater with Cr(VI) concentration from 20 mg L-1 to less than 0.2 mg L-1, which met the PRC discharge standard (GB/21900-2008) of electroplating pollutants. Abstract:The magnetic properties of iron oxides and the adsorption features of activated carbon were combined in a composite to produce magnetic adsorbents. This composite could be used as adsorbent for contaminants in aqueous system and subsequently removed from the water by a simple magnetic procedure. Using chemical co-precipitation, activated carbon/iron oxide magnetic composite was prepared with weight rations of 3∶1 and 3∶2 and characterized by magnetization measurements, BET surface areas measurements, powder XRD and SEM. The results suggested that the main magnetic phase presented was maghemite and the presence of iron oxide did not significantly affect the surface area or pore structure of activated carbon. The composites prepared at different temperature varying from room temperature to 70℃ all had good magnetism and could be well separated from aquatic system by a magnet. In addition, the adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm of AO7 onto the composites also showed that the presence of iron oxide did not affect the adsorption capacity of the activated carbon.
A novel ternary magnetic Fe3O4/g-C3N4/Carbon layer composite for efficient removal of Cr (VI): A combined approach using both batch experiments and theoretical calculation

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution has posed a potential hazard to the ecological environment and human health. Herein, a novel ternary magnetic adsorbent (Fe3O4/g-C3N4/Carbon layer, Carbon layer: hydrothermal products from sucrose) was synthesized through a simple hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) method for removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) removal. The Carbon layer (CL) formed during the HTC of carbon precursors (sucrose) acted as a reducing agent. Also, it has abundant oxygen-containing groups on its surface. The Fe3O4/g-C3N4/CL had a high removal capacity for Cr (VI) (50.09 mg/g), and excellent regeneration and magnetic separation performance. Importantly, the Fe3O4/g-C3N4/CL could not only improve the adsorption ability for Cr (VI), but also strengthen the immobilization of Cr (III). Based on the comprehensive experiments and characterization, combined with DFT calculations, we proposed that, the first time, the removal of Cr (VI) was controlled by three consecutive processes: (1) ion exchange of Cr (VI) by hydroxyl groups, (2) reduction of Cr (VI) to Cr (III) by electron-donor (oxygen-containing) groups (EDGs), and (3) complexation of Cr (III) by amine groups. This study provides a new avenue for the removal of toxic oxygen anions and reveals an original removal mechanism of Fe3O4/g-C3N4/CLx (x = hydrothermal products from carbon precursors (glucose, ascorbic acid, cellulose)).

Abstract:Magnetic Co0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4 nanoparticles were successfully prepared via the combustion and calcination process, with an average particle diameter of 31.5 nm and a saturation magnetization of 25.25 emu·g-1, they were employed to adsorbe Congo red (CR) from wastewater, the Pseudo-second-order kinetic and Freundlich isotherm were consistent with the adsorption data, indicating that their adsorption was a multilayer chemisorption process, the thermodynamic investigation showed that the adsorption was a favored exothermic process. The ionic strength of Cl- in CR solution had no obvious effect on the adsorption efficiency of Co0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4 nanoparticles, and the maximum adsorbance was 58.3 mg·g-1 at pH 2, decreasing as the pH of the CR solutions increased from 2 to 12. The ion leaching experiment and XRD demonstrated that Co0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4 nanoparticles had excellent stability, and the relative removal rate was 93.85% of the first time after 7 cycles. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy demonstrated that CR was adsorbed onto Co0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4 nanoparticles, and the electrical conductivity of Co0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4 nanoparticles decreased after adsorption of CR. Magnetic Co0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4 nanoparticles displayed a promising application in wastewater treatment.

Background: Biomass materials are currently attracting more research interests as pollutant adsorbent attributed to rich sources, low cost, non-toxicity, biodegradability and easy modification. Methods: Herein, a glucose-based carbon material (GC) was fabricated via hydrothermal method and formed pores materials by activation using KOH. Then the amino modified magnetic glucose-based carbon composite (MAGC) was prepared by the co-precipitation method and followed the simple cross-linking reaction. Significant Findings: MAGC had a high nitrogen content of 10.89 wt.% with many active adsorption sites and the magnetic separation process of MAGC was completed within 25 s. The adsorption experiments indicated the superior adsorption capacity of MAGC for water pollutants (several heavy metal ions and anionic dyes). Cr(VI) was selected as the model pollutant, the maximum adsorption capacity (Q max ) of MAGC was 537.63 mg g −1 at pH 2 and 25 °C, which followed the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model. Low concentration (1 mg L −1 ) cyclic adsorption demonstrated that after 40 cycles without regeneration, the Cr(VI) concentration remained the below 0.05 mg L −1 in 30 min, which was the safe level of drinking water specified by WHO. This design of biomass-based carbon composites may provide a promising absorbent for efficient removal of water pollutants. Abstract:Cr(VI)-containing wastewater is drawing more and more attention due to its high toxicity. In this study, a novel magnetic adsorbent for Cr(VI) removal was synthesized by decorating corncob biochar with polypyrrole (PPy) (MBC/PPy). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) were used to determine the removal mechanism of Cr(VI). The MBC/PPy composite had an outstanding Cr(VI) removal ability within a wide pH range (2.0–10.0). The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models, and the maximum adsorption capacity was speculated as 19.23 mg/g at 20 °C. The mass and charge balance calculation of N showed that the PPy was four-layer deep, and only the outermost layer was available. The detailed mechanism was demonstrated via three steps: (1) Cr(VI) anions were adsorbed on the surface of the MBC/PPy composite, followed by a partial anion exchange with Cl⁻; (2) Adsorbed Cr(VI) anions were reduced to Cr(III) by amine (NH) and hydroxyl (COH) functional groups; (3) Most of the generated Cr(III) cations were immobilized by precipitation and chelation, and a small part of them was released into the liquid phase due to the electrostatic repulsion process.

Abstract:In this study, zirconium-doped carbon shell-protected magnetic Fe 3 O 4 composite (Zr–Fe 3 O 4 @C) was synthesized by hydrothermal method with chitosan assistance. Chitosan as a stabilizer successfully prevented the aggregation of Fe 3 O 4 , resulting in approximately a 30.7% increase in the specific surface area of Zr–Fe 3 O 4 @C. TEM analysis revealed that Zr–Fe 3 O 4 @C exhibited a relatively uniform square shape with a size of about 120 nm. The synergistic effect between iron and zirconium oxides resulted in a nearly 20% increase in the adsorption capacity of Zr–Fe 3 O 4 @C (Fe/Zr molar ratio of 3:1) for Cr(VI) compared to Fe 3 O 4 . The introduction of zirconium also significantly improved the acid and base resistance (1–9) and environmental adaptability of Zr–Fe 3 O 4 @C composites. With good magnetic properties (53.5 emu/g) and separation recycling properties, Zr–Fe 3 O 4 @C showed rapid water separation within 20 s. At a pH of 3 and 30 °C, Zr–Fe 3 O 4 @C achieved a maximum adsorption capacity of 132.72 mg/g by the Langmuir isotherm. Furthermore, even after six consecutive treatments, the adsorption performance of Zr–Fe 3 O 4 @C for Cr(VI) only decreased by about 9.8%. The stable adsorption performance and regeneration ability suggested that Zr–Fe 3 O 4 @C would be considered a reliable candidate for Cr(VI) wastewater remediation.
