Abstract:A single-cylinder diesel engine has been run on gasolines of different octane numbers and on model fuels, mixtures of iso-octane, n-heptane and toluene, at different operating conditions. The autoignition quality of the fuel is best described by an Octane Index, OI = (1 - K) . RON + K . MON for fuels in the gasoline autoignition range where RON and MON are, respectively, the Research and Motor Octane numbers and K is an empirical constant which is measured to be negative. Hence for a given RON, a non-paraffinic fuel, of lower MON, will have higher OI and more resistance to autoignition. For a given operating condition, ignition delay increases non-linearly with OI and changes little over the autoignition range of practical diesel fuels. Heat release following the autoignition is influenced by the stratification which will increase as the time between the end of injection and start of combustion decreases and combustion phasing parameters such as Combustion Delay, the difference between the 50% burn time and the start of injection, become less correlated with fuel autoignition quality. Higher ignition delays facilitate premixed combustion in the diesel engine. If two fuels have similar combustion phasing at the same injection timing, their emissions performance is also similar. Hence a good surrogate for gasoline in partially premixed compression ignition engines is a mixture of toluene, iso-octane and n-heptane with the same RON and MON. (C) 2010 The Combustion Institute. Abstract:Experimental study of the autoignition and combustion characteristics of homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) was carried out on a modified diesel engine fuelled with Dimethyl ether (DME) fuel. Numerical simulations were also performed by using the detailed chemical kinetic mechanism of DME oxidation proposed by American Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory(LLNL). The experimental results indicate that HCCI combustion with DW fuel can be realized in diesel engine with a few modifications, and it has a two-stage heat release characteristics. The emissions of HCCI combustion with DNIE fuel can be characterized by free of smoke and near zero NOx. The simulation results suggest that the single-zone model can accurately predict the ignition timings, including the low temperature ignition and high temperature ignition. The variations of key species (such as H2O2, CH2O, OH, HCO, CH, etc) with crank angle during fuel oxidation and the effects of engine operating parameters on HCCI combustion can also be analyzed by numerical simulation.

Abstract:Auto-ignition of fuel mixtures was investigated both theoretically and experimentally to gain further understanding of the fuel chemistry. A homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine was run under different operating conditions with fuels of different RON and MON and different chemistries. Fuels considered were primary reference fuels and toluene/n-heptane blends. The experiments were modeled with a single-zone adiabatic model together with detailed chemical kinetic models. In the model validation, co-oxidation reactions between the individual fuel components were found to be important in order to predict HCCI experiments, shock-tube ignition delay time data, and ignition delay times in rapid compression machines. The kinetic models with added co-oxidation reactions further predicted that an n-heptane/toluene fuel with the same RON as the corresponding primary reference fuel had higher resistance to auto-ignition in HCCI combustion for lower intake temperatures and higher intake pressures. However, for higher intake temperatures and lower intake pressures the n-heptane/toluene fuel and the PRF fuel had similar combustion phasing.

Abstract:Dimethyl ether (DME) is a kind of fuel with high cetane number and low evaporating temperature, which is suitable for a homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine. The combustion and emission characteristics of an HCCI engine fuelled with DME were investigated on a modified single-cylinder engine. The experimental results indicate that the HCCI engine combustion is a two-stage heat release process. The engine load or air-fuel ratio has significant effects on the maximum cylinder pressure and its position, the shape of the pressure rise rate and the heat release rate. The engine speed has little effect. A DME HCCI engine is smoke free, with zero NOx and low hydrocarbon and CO emissions under the operating conditions of 0.25–0.30 MPa brake mean effective pressure.

Abstract:The differences between modern diesel and gasoline engine configurations are now becoming smaller and smaller, and in fact will be even smaller in the near future. They will all use moderately high compression ratios and complex direct injection strategies. The HCCI combustion mode is likely to lead to the merging of gasoline and diesel engine technologies to handle the challenges they are facing, offering a number of opportunities for the development of the fuels, engine control and after-treatment. The authors' recent experimental research into the HCCI combustion quality of gasoline and diesel blend fuels has referred to the new combustion technology as 'Dieseline'. It is found that this kind of fuel blend provides some unexpected benefits to the expansion of the operating window and reduction of hydrocarbon emissions in HCCI engines, and these benefits include extended low misfire limit, increased engine stability, reduced peak cylinder pressures and reduced emissions within the whole HCCI operating window. It was shown that the lean limit of lambda can almost reach up to 2.0 when the engine is operated with moderate compression ratios. It is shown that the combustion of the blended fuel offers promise to the desired ignition quality, which reduces the dependence of HCCI on EGR trapping or intake heating for a wide range of CR. The HCCI operating region for the unheated NVO can be significantly extended into lower IMEP values and the audible knocking is restrained to the highest values of air fuel ratio at high load boundary for the highest mixture temperatures. Abstract:The experimental study of homogeneous charge compression ignition(HCCI) combustion process was carried out on a singe cylinder diesel engine fueled with dimethyl ether(DME).The research shows that the HCCI engine combustion demonstrates two stages heat release processes,which are low temperature reaction and high temperature reaction,and the earlier ignition of DME.The fuel/air equivalent ratio of the mixture has little influence on the initial point of low temperature reaction,but has much influence on the initial point of high temperature reaction.With the increase of the fuel/air equivalent ratio,the initial point of high temperature reaction advances.When the fuel/air equivalent ratio is 0.21,the engine has slight knock phenomenon. With the increase of engine speed,the initial point of low temperature reaction advances,and the heat release rate on the initial point of the high temperature reaction increases slightly.After intake temperature and cooling liquid temperature increase,the initial points of low temperature reaction and high temperature reaction both advance.The maximum pressure in the cylinder appears before top dead center(BTDC) when the intake temperature go over 300 K.Accordingly,the intake temperature is the important parameter to control the initial point of ignition.

Abstract:Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) shows great potential for low NO, emission but is hampered by the problem of no direct method to control the combustion process. Therefore, HCCI combustion becomes unstable easily, especially at lower and higher engine load. This paper presents a method to achieve diesel-fueled HCCI combustion, which involves directly injecting diesel fuel into the cylinder before the piston arrives at top dead center in the exhaust stroke and adjusting the valve overlap duration to trap more high temperature residual gas in the cylinder. The combustion stability of diesel-fueled HCCI combustion and the effects of engine load, speed, and valve overlap on it are the main points of investigation. The results show that: diesel-fueled HCCI combustion has two-stage heat release rate (low temperature and high temperature heat release) and very low NO, emission, combustion stability of the HCCI engine is worse at lower load because of misfire and at higher load because of knock, the increase in engine speed aids combustion stability at lower load because the heat loss is reduced, and increasing negative valve overlap can increase in-cylinder temperature which aids combustion stability at lower load but harms it at higher load.

Abstract:Ammonia (NH3) 3 ) is considered a promising alternative fuel due to its renewable and carbon-free nature. The addition of hydrogen (H2) 2 ) significantly improves its flammability, making it suitable for use in internal combustion engines. The homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) technique offers a practical solution for high-efficiency NH3-H2 3-H 2 operation, but it is not extensively discussed in existing literature. To enhance the understanding of NH3-H2 3-H 2 HCCI engines, this study employs a zero-dimensional model validated against experimental results to investigate engine efficiency and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions. The results indicate that an ammonia-dedicated HCCI mode would misfire at a 22:1 compression ratio and an engine speed of 1500 rpm if the intake pressure and temperature are insufficient. Hydrogen addition can help overcome the misfire issue and reduce the intake pressure and temperature required for combustion initiation. However, higher hydrogen addition ratios decrease thermal efficiency and increase NOx emission levels. In lean NH3-H2 3-H 2 HCCI operation, NOx emissions are primarily driven by fuel-borne mechanisms and peak at an equivalence ratio of around 0.5. A higher hydrogen addition ratio should be avoided as it increases the risk of ringing, thereby reducing the maximum allowable equivalence ratio and engine load. As a result, a moderate hydrogen addition ratio, such as 20 %, is preferable for NH3-H2 3-H 2 HCCI engines. Additionally, an equivalence ratio of approximately 0.3 is optimal, balancing multiple performance indicators such as thermal efficiency, NOx emission levels, and engine operating stability. These findings suggest that the operating range of NH3-H2 3-H 2 HCCI engines is limited, making them more suitable for off-road applications, such as power generation.

Abstract:This paper presents a scheme to achieve diesel-fuelled homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion, which is to inject diesel fuel directly into the cylinder at near intake top dead centre and adjust the valve overlap to obtain a higher internal exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) in the cylinder. The effects of the engine load, speed, inlet temperature, external EGR, and internal EGR on HCCI combustion and emission were studied. The combustion stability of HCCI combustion was also studied by statistics analysis. The results show the following: when the engine load or inlet temperature increases, which results in a higher in-cylinder temperature, the start of combustion (SOC) is advanced; the ignition time of HCCI relative to the engine crank angle is retarded when the engine speed increases; inert gases contained in the EGR can slow the chemical reaction rate, which can delay the auto ignition time; for the diesel-fuelled HCCI, increasing the negative valve overlap (NVO) makes the SOC advanced and makes the combustion stability better at low loads and worse at high loads. The emission results show that the nitrogen oxides (NO x ) and smoke emissions are very low, and a large NVO can decrease the smoke emission but not benefit the NO x emission at high loads for diesel-fuelled HCCI combustion.
The Influence of Intake Pressure and Ethanol Addition to Gasoline on Single- and Dual-Stage Autoignition in an HCCI Engine

Abstract:Autoignition in HCCI engines is known to be controlled by the combustion kinetics of the in-cylinder fuel/air mixture which is highly influenced by the amount of low-temperature and intermediate-temperature heat release (LTHR and ITHR) that occurs. At lower intake pressures (typically <1.4 bar absolute), it has been observed that gasoline behaves as a single-stage heat release fuel, while at higher intake pressures (typically >1.8 bar absolute) gasoline behaves as a two-stage heat release fuel. Furthermore, ethanol blending into gasoline strongly affects heat release characteristics, and this warrants further investigation. This paper experimentally investigates the conditions under which gasoline transitions from a single-stage heat release fuel to a two-stage heat release fuel as intake pressure is increased. Experiments were performed in single-cylinder HCCI engine fueled with two research-grade gasolines, FACE A and FACE C. These gasolines were tested neat, and with 10% and 20% (by volume) ethanol addition. In addition, these results were compared to results previously obtained for PRF 85, and new results for PRF 84 with 10% and 20% ethanol addition. Moreover, the engine experiments were supported by rapid compression machine (RCM) ignition delay data for the same fuels. The engine experiments revealed that there were minimal differences between the heat release profiles of the two gasolines, FACE A and FACE C, a result which was supported by the RCM experiments that showed similar ignition delay times for the two FACE fuels and PRF 84. On the other hand, with ethanol addition to these gasolines and PRF 84, the occurrence of LTHR shifted to higher intake pressures compared to ethanol-free cases, from 1.4 bar intake pressure for neat fuel to 2.2 bar with 20% ethanol. Consequently, the intake temperatures required to achieve constant combustion phasing for all mixtures were drastically altered. Simulations using a detailed chemical kinetic model were utilized to understand the effects of ethanol blending on the ignition characteristics of PRF 84. The addition of ethanol was found to act as a radical sink where it inhibits the radical pool formation during the low (<850 K) and intermediate (850-1050 K) temperature chemistry regimes resulting in lower reactivity. These results help explain ethanol's significant antiknock qualities under boosted conditions in spark-ignition engines.

Abstract:Chemical composition difference widely exists in real fuels, and the composition difference will affect the fuel autoignition and heat release in HCCI-based advanced engines. This study aims to explore the composition effects on autoignition by comparing the autoignition characteristics of two commercial diesels (China Stage-V and Stage-VI). The main composition difference is that Stage-V diesel has a higher paraffin content and a lower naphthene content than Stage-VI diesel. Ignition delay times (IDTs) of the two diesels were measured in a heated rapid compression machine at equivalence ratios of 0.37-1.25, pressures of 10-20 bar, and temperatures of 687-865 K. It is found that the difference in the total IDTs of the two diesels varies with the temperature range, and the first-stage IDTs of Stage-V diesel are much shorter than those of Stage-VI diesel. The IDT discrepancies were appropriately explained using the composition difference between the two diesels. Model simulation was carried out using a ternary and a five-component diesel surrogate coupled with an updated kinetic model. Simulation results show that the composition effects on the autoignition of the two diesels can be well captured by the two surrogates, where the ternary and five-component surrogates agree well with Stage-V and Stage-VI diesels, respectively. To further reveal the intrinsic mechanism of the composition effects, low-temperature reactivity difference between the two surrogates was interpreted from a kinetic perspective. Rate of production (ROP) analysis on OH radical confirms that the addition of decalin in the five-component surrogate is primarily responsible for the longer first-stage IDT compared to the ternary surrogate. Since the two surrogates capture the composition difference and autoignition characteristics of the two diesels, the conclusion from the kinetic analysis will help understand the composition effects on the autoignition of the diesels. Abstract:Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI), a low temperature combustion technology, is believed to be a promising technology due to low NOx and PM emissions and better fuel economy. HCCI combustion can realize homogeneous charge preparation in the cylinder and promote combustion auto-ignites in multiple spots by cooperative control of fuel chemistry and boundary conditions, such as Intake temperature, pressure, mixture concentration and EGR, which can short the flame propagation distance and accelerate the ignition and combustion speed. HCCI combustion control technology can be divided into two categories: one is to change the air/fuel mixing characteristics; the other is to change the working and design parameters of the engine. This paper reviews the establishment, improvement and development of HCCI combustion indirect control technology through the experimental research results of researchers in recent years.

Abstract:Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion was studied in a four-stroke gasoline engine with a direct injection system. The spark ignition and electronically controlled two-stage gasoline injection system are adopted to control the mixture formation, ignition timing, and combustion rate in the HCCI engine. The engine could be operated in HCCI combustion mode in a range of loads from 1 to 5 bar indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) and operated in SI combustion mode up to loads of 8 bar IMEP. The HCCI combustion characteristics were investigated under different air—fuel ratios, engine speeds, starts of injection, as well as spark ignition enabled or not. By introducing the second fuel injection in the compression stroke, the stratified concentration is formed and the mixture is cooled, which means that HCCI ignition timing can be controlled and the load range can be extended by tuning the mixture concentration and temperature. At a critical ignition temperature, especially in SI—HCCI combustion mode transition, assisted SI improves the stability of HCCI combustion. In order to understand better the physicochemical process in the cylinder, an improved three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics code has been utilized to simulate the intake, two-stage spray, compression, and combustion processes of the HCCI engine. The calculated results show that a homogeneous lean charge could be realized by single fuel injection in the intake stroke. With the help of the intake swirl and squish flow in the compression stroke, a rich mixture resulting from the second fuel injection can be formed near the spark. Hydroxyl ions (OH) reach to a maximum at the periphery of the fuel-rich zone; a great number of spots are ignited simultaneously. It works as an initiation to ignite the surrounding lean mixture zone.
Experimental Research on HCCI Using Gasoline and Diesel Blended Fuels

Abstract:Gasoline and diesel, the two fuels with different properties and were blended as a fuel for HCCI operation. Gasoline fuel, with the features of high volatility, easy vaporization and mixture formation, is used to form the homogeneous charge. While diesel fuel with better ignitability is used to control autoignition and knocking in the HCCI environment. The combination of the two different fuels is expected to get good compromise in HCCI combustion. Experiments conducted with moderate compression ratios (10.4 and 15) and using two modes of HCCI control, i. e. intake heating and NVO (Negative Valve Overlap) received the expected results. With increasing proportion of diesel fuel in the blend, the requirement of intake temperature for knock-free HCCI operation was decreased. Excess air ratio range was extended and emissions of HC and NOx were greatly reduced over the HCCI operating range.
Active Fuel Design-A Way to Manage the Right Fuel for Hcci Engines

Abstract:Homogenous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engines feature high thermal efficiency and ultralow emissions compared to gasoline engines. However, unlike SI engines, HCCI combustion does not have a direct way to trigger the in-cylinder combustion. Therefore, gasoline HCCI combustion is facing challenges in the control of ignition and, combustion, and operational range extension. In this paper, an active fuel design concept was proposed to explore a potential pathway to optimize the HCCI engine combustion and broaden its operational range. The active fuel design concept was realized by real time control of dual-fuel (gasoline and n-heptane) port injection, with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rate and intake temperature adjusted. It was found that the cylinderto-cylinder variation in HCCI combustion could be effectively reduced by the optimization in fuel injection proportion, and that the rapid transition process from SI to HCCI could be realized. The active fuel design technology could significantly increase the adaptability of HCCI combustion to increased EGR rate and reduced intake temperature. Active fuel design was shown to broaden the operational HCCI load to 9.3 bar indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP). HCCI operation was used by up to 70% of the SI mode load while reducing fuel consumption and nitrogen oxides emissions. Therefore, the active fuel design technology could manage the right fuel for clean engine combustion, and provide a potential pathway for engine fuel diversification and future engine concept.
