Abstract:Multipath provisioning (MPP) in elastic optical networks (EONs) can improve the network performance effectively. In this paper, we study the protection schemes for MPP to ensure 100% restoration against single-link failures. We design three algorithms, namely, Instant-ILP, PWCE-MPP and mPWCEMPP. The first one leverages a simple integer linear programming (ILP) model to design the optimal working-backup structure for each request instantly, while the rest two utilize protected working capacity envelop (PWCE) and spectrum planning to further reduce bandwidth blocking probability (BBP). Moreover, mPWCE-MPP considers the differences among working and backup paths, and ensures that the maximum path-difference (MPD) of a request will not increase dramatically in restoration. Simulation results show that mPWCE-MPP can obtain the best trade-off between BBP and average MPD.

Abstract:A novel self-protection scheme for an Ethernet passive optical network is introduced and studied at both the physical and the media access control layers. The scheme is simple and fast and can provide 1: 1 protection and automatic traffic restoration against the fiber link failure between a remote node ( RN) and any optical network unit (ONU). Simulation results show that fiber failure does not degrade the transmission performance, and the restoration time depends mainly on the switch time of the physical layer. Our protection scheme saves many long fibers, does not influence other normal ONUs, and requires no active device in the RN. (C) 2006 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:Compared with fixed-grid optical network, flexible-grid optical network (FON) enabling technologies could provide higher spectrum efficiency and thus more capacity. With more data capacity, physical network failure (i.e., link or node) will lead to more communication disruptions, especially for multiple failures. In previous research, the protection strategies against multiple failures is mainly single-path provisioning (SPP). They require multiple diverse routes and allocate protection resource separately, which are resource consuming. With the advantages of partial protection and lower resources consumption, the multipath provisioning (MPP) scheme has been considered in traditional wavelength-division multiplexing network, where traffic is split into multiple lower-rate streams and each stream is separately routed. In MPP, the number of required paths and the amount of resource allocated for each path are the two important parameters to be determined and will have great impact on the spectrum efficiency. In light of the above discussion, a spectrum-efficient shared protection MPP (S-MPP) scheme against multiple failures in FONs is proposed. It is formulated as an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) model and a heuristic algorithm is also developed. Also, the determination of the number of paths and the resource requirement of each path in FON is analyzed in this paper. Furthermore, with MPP, the shared protection in FON is different from that with SPP, because the paths are equal in MPP (no primary path or backup path) and sharing partial path is available. Therefore, we discuss the partial sharing scheme and analyze the amount of shared spectrum resource on each path. Finally, the simulation results show that the proposed S-MPP scheme in FON achieves a significant gain on spectrum efficiency with enough protection against multiple failures. Moreover, the performance of the proposed heuristic algorithm is very close to the optimal solution achieved by solving ILP.
Data Center Network Placement and Service Protection in All-Optical Mesh Networks

Abstract:Cloud services based on data center networks (DCNs) require a transmission infrastructure with high-capacity, low-latency, low-cost and high-availability, which can be offered by survivable optical networks. DCN placement is a fundamental issue in supporting cloud services in optical networks. It concerns not only the cost of providing cloud services, but also the service availability against failures via proper service replicas. In this paper, we jointly optimize DCN placement with service routing and protection to minimize the network cost, while ensuring fast protection of all services against a single link or server failure. An ILP (Integer Linear Program) is formulated to achieve optimal joint design. It integrates p-cycle (preconfigured protection cycle) for fast protection against a single link failure, and DCN replicas and fast service rerouting against a server failure. To make the design more scalable, a two-step heuristic is proposed for large-size networks. The first step separately solves the DCN placement and service routing problem in the failure-free scenario, and the second step takes fast service protection into account. The proposed design is validated by extensive simulation studies.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a scenario in which protected and unprotected services coexist in an elastic optical network under dynamic traffic. In the investigated scenario, unprotected services can reuse the reserved idle bandwidth to provide protection to the protected services. Under this scenario, we propose a new heuristic algorithm that enables such reuse as well as define and introduce a new assignment problem in elastic optical networks, named a Transmission Spectrum Assignment (T-SA) problem. In this paper, we consider a scenario in which services may be routed using the multipath routing approach. Additionally, protection using bandwidth squeezing is also considered. We assess our proposal through simulations on three different network topologies and compare our proposal against the classical protection approach, in which bandwidth reuse is not allowed. For the simulated range of network loads, the maximum (minimum) blocking probability reduction obtained by our proposal is approximately 48% (10%) in the European topology, 46% (7%) in the NSFNET topology, and 32% (6%) in the German topology.

Abstract:The design of the intelligent all-optical protection scheme based on the physical layer of the mesh optical network is introduced.This scheme obeys the principle of 1+1 protection method which is based on the "dual fed selective receiving" mode.The scheme consists of hardware design and software design.A new type of intelligent real-time monitoring and protecting device and an algorithm of automatic establishment of the protecting light path are designed.The algorithm runs within the device and enables the device to establish a protecting light path in the protection fiber network for each corresponding working light path in advance.The real-time optical power of the working light paths is monitored by the device.Once the fault of the working light path occurs,the device will switch to the corresponding protecting light path immediately.The algorithm is assumed to be implemented in a 12-node mesh optical network,and the simulation result is given.By using the proposed protection scheme,the transparent uninterrupted communication of mesh optical network can be achievable in the way of the all-optical protection.

Abstract:Availability-aware service provisioning tries to satisfy the availability requirements of clients on demand and can improve the resource efficiency in optical networks. This paper studies the problem of flexible availability-aware differentiated protection (ADP) in elastic optical networks (EONs). We first consider the unique features in EONs, e.g., flexible spectrum allocation and bandwidth-squeezed protection, describe the problem of ADP, and present a theoretical analysis on service availability. Then, we develop an ADP algorithm that can change the path protection scheme to adapt to different service availability requirements. An availability-aware backup reprovisioning strategy is also proposed as a supplement of the ADP algorithm to further improve the protection efficiency. We also discuss the system design for OpenFlow-based software-defined EON (SD-EON) framework to facilitate the ADP scheme. Finally, to demonstrate the overall design, we construct an SD-EON control plane testbed that consists of 14 standalone nodes, implement the proposed algorithms in the OpenFlow controller, and perform experiments to evaluate their performance. The results indicate that the system performs well, and the proposed algorithms can reduce blocking probability effectively without sacrificing the service availability of requests.

Abstract:In the presence of the increasing demand, it is urgent for the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical transport network not only to boost the transmission capacity but also to enhance the survivability. In this paper, A M:N protection scheme for WDM optical transport networks is proposed and demonstrated. The M protection channels are used to transmit low priority traffic in normal condition, and can be switched automatically to replace a working channel when failure occurs to that working channel. Compared with the 1+1 protection system, the proposed scheme achieves better performance with lower costs. An optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM) is also proposed with the protection scheme. Any channel in M or in N can be dropped in the OADM according to the demand of the network management center. When failures occurred to a working channel that should be dropped in the OADM, and when the traffic on the failed working channel has already been switched to a protection channel at the previous node, the protection channel is dropped in the OADM automatically instead of the failed working channel. Then the corresponded adding signal is still added to the working channel, i.e., the protection channel is set free and can be used to carry low priority traffic again to the next node. Experimental result shows that the protection takes place within 7 ms, which satisfies the requirement of the ITU-T recommendations.

Abstract:This work addresses the optimized planning of survivable optical 5G Xhaul access networks employing passive Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technologies. Specifically, it focuses on the reliability of optical transmission paths connecting remote radio sites to a central hub ensured by using a novel, cost-effective, flexible, and dedicated path protection (DPP-F) scheme, protecting against single-link failures. The proposed DPP-F network protection approach allows for switching of individual wavelengths or the complete multiplexed WDM signal, flexibly applying the best switching option according to given traffic demands. Concurrently, it enables traffic aggregation on the transmission paths from the end and intermediate nodes to minimize the overall network deployment cost. The problem of selecting primary (working) and backup (protection) paths, together with the selection of the best switching and traffic aggregation options, is modeled and solved as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) optimization problem. To evaluate the cost savings achieved with DPP-F, we compare it with two reference DPP schemes based on switching the entire multiplexed WDM signal (DPP-M) and individual wavelengths (DPP-W). Numerical experiments conducted across a wide range of network scenarios reveal, among other things, that DPP-F's performance is at least as good as that of the reference methods, bringing significant cost savings (from several to tens of percent) in most of the analyzed network scenarios.

Abstract:We propose a novel OpenFlow based recovery mechanism for Flexi-Grid optical networks, called partial protection full bandwidth restoration (PP-FBR), based on the implement of common protection and restoration mechanisms. Our experimental results demonstrate feasibility of our recovery mechanisms and the PP-FBR’s high spectrum efficiency.

Abstract:Optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (O-OFDM) technology has the elastic feature of allocating spectrum resources based on subcarrier slots with bandwidths at a few GHz or even narrower. This feature enables us to utilize link capacity more efficiently by splitting a connection's traffic over multiple routing paths. In this paper, we propose a novel dynamic multi-path provisioning algorithm for O-OFDM based elastic optical networks. The algorithm tries to set up dynamic connections with single-path routing in a best-effort manner. When a connection cannot be served with a single routing path, the algorithm uses an auxiliary-graph based approach to calculate a multi-path provisioning scheme based on two parameters, i.e., the differential delay upper-bound and the bandwidth allocation granularity. Simulation results indicate that compared with several existing single-path provisioning algorithms, the proposed algorithm provides lower bandwidth blocking probability and achieves 10-18% improvement on average network throughput.

Abstract:The space division multiplexing elastic optical network (SDM-EONs) can effectively supply the large-capacity for the current optical network. If a link failure occurs, it will bring huge data losses or disruptions for the operator. We propose a survivable multipath fragmentation-sensitive fragmentation-aware routing, core and spectrum assignment (SM-FSFA-RSCA) scheme to solving the problem of survivability of the request in SDM-EONs and spectrum fragmentation that caused by the dynamic allocation and release of spectrum resources. We design a fragmentation-sensitive fragmentation metric (FSFM) to estimate the spectrum fragmentation in the established lightpaths, and design a dynamic routing and core selection strategy for the request to control spectrum fragmentation in the core according to FSFM. We consider survivable multipath routing strategy for saving spectrum resources, each path of the multipath can be used as a working path or a protection path. In addition, for spectrum allocation, a survivable multipath with shared spectrum allocation strategy is adopted to maximize the utilization of frequency resources. The simulation results show that the algorithm proposed in this paper significantly reduces the bandwidth blocking probability,fragmentation ratio and also improves the spectrum utilization.

Abstract:Due to the prominent performance on networking virtualization and programmability, OpenFlow is widely regarded as a promising control plane technology in packet-switched IP networks as well as wavelength-switched optical networks. For the purpose of applying software programmable feature to future optical networks, we propose an OpenFlow-based control plane in Flexi-Grid optical networks. Experimental results demonstrate its feasibility of dynamic lightpath establishment and adjustment via extended OpenFlow protocol. Wireshark captures of the signaling procedure are printed out. Additionally, the overall latency including signaling and hardware for lightpath setup and adjustment is also reported.
