Abstract:Donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated copolymers are one of known classes of organic optoelectronic materials and have been well developed. However, less attention has been paid on acceptor-acceptor (A-A) conjugated analogs. In this work, two types of A-A conjugated copolymers, namely P1-Cn and P2-Cn (n is the carbon number of their alkyl side chains), were designed and synthesized based on perylenediimide (PDI) and 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (BT). Different from P1-Cn, P2-Cn polymers have additional acetylene -spacers between PDI and BT and thus hold a more planar backbone configuration. Property studies revealed that P2-Cn polymers possess a much red-extended UV-vis absorption spectrum, stronger - interchain interactions, and one-order larger electron mobility in their neat film state than P1-Cn. However, all-polymer solar cells using P1-Cn as acceptor component and poly(3-hexyl thiophene) or poly(2,7-(9,9-didodecyl-fluoene)-alt-5,5-(4,7-dithienyl-2-yl-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole) as donor component exhibited much better performance than those based on P2-Cn. Apart from their backbone chemical structure, the side chains were found to have little influence on the photophysical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties for both P1-Cn and P2-Cn polymers. Abstract:Ternary copolymerization is a cost-effective and time-saving approach to improve device performance and batch stability of polymer donors. However, the structure of the ternary polymer donor obtained by the traditional one-pot polymerization is vague due to the different monomer reaction order, which has a great influence on the absorption, crystallization, molecular stacking, and device performance. Therefore, it is necessary to obtain terpolymers with definite structures, and systematically study the differences in device properties of polymers with different sequence structures. Herein, three terpolymers D1, D2, and D3 are developed. Random copolymer D3 is obtained via the traditional one-pot method while alternating copolymer donor D1 and block copolymer D2 are synthesized by stepwise polymerization. Because the block copolymer D2 possess periodic sequence distribution and retains the excellent properties of the two polymer matrix very well, the D2-based device shows enhanced tightened pi-face-on molecular stacking, distinguished efficient exciton dissociation, and decreased energy loss. As a result, the D2:L8-BO-based polymer solar cells achieve one of a record power conversion efficiency of 19.03%. The work demonstrates changing the sequence structure of the polymers to synthesize well-defined structures polymer donors not only maintains the features of polymer matrix, but also combines the advantages of ternary copolymerization. Breaking the traditional one-pot polymerization method, three terpolymers with different sequence structures are developed, namely alternate copolymer (D1), block copolymer (D2), and random copolymer (D3). The D2-based device shows more efficient exciton dissociation, smaller energy loss, and better molecular stacking orientation than D1 and D3-based, resulting in D2:L8-BO-based device obtaining one of a record PCE of 19.03%. image
Low Band‐gap D–A Conjugated Copolymers Based on Anthradithiophene and Diketopyrrolopyrrole for Polymer Solar Cells and Field‐effect Transistors

Abstract:ABSTRACTTwo conjugated copolymers PADT‐DPP and PADT‐FDPP based on anthradithiophene and diketopyrrolopyrrole, with thiophene and furan as the π‐conjugated bridge, respectively, were successfully synthesized and characterized. The number‐averaged molecular weights of the two polymers are 38.7 and 30.2 kg/mol, respectively. Polymers PADT‐DPP and PADT‐FDPP exhibit broad absorption bands and their optical band gaps are 1.44 and 1.50 eV, respectively. The highest occupied molecular orbital energy level of PADT‐DPP is located at −5.03 eV while that of PADT‐FDPP is at −5.16 eV. In field‐effect transistors, PADT‐DPP and PADT‐FDPP displayed hole mobilities of 4.7 × 10−3 and 2.7 × 10−3 cm2/(V s), respectively. In polymer solar cells, PADT‐DPP and PADT‐FDPP showed power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.44% and 0.29%, respectively. Atomic force microscopy revealed that the poor efficiency of PADT‐FDPP should be related to the large two‐phase separation in its active layer. If 1,8‐diiodooctane (DIO) was used as the solvent additive, the PCE of PADT‐DPP remained almost unchanged due to very limited morphology variation. However, the addition of DIO could remarkably elevate the PCE of PADT‐FDPP to 2.62% because of the greatly improved morphology. Our results suggest that the anthradithiophene as an electron‐donating polycyclic system is useful to construct new D–A alternating copolymers for efficient polymer solar cells. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Dithienocoronene Diimide Based Conjugated Polymers As Electron Acceptors for All-Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:A series of n-type copolymers based on dithienocoronene diimide with different number of thiophene units have been designed and synthesized by Pd-catalyzed Stille coupling polymerization. The soluble polymers P1–P3 exhibit good thermal stability with decomposition temperatures of 340−390°C. The absorption spectra (400–700nm) red shift, and optical band gap (1.7–1.9eV) decreases with increasing thiophene number in the copolymers. The estimated LUMOs for these polymers (ca. −3.5eV) are relatively insensitive to thiophene number, while the HOMOs (−6.0 to −5.7eV) up shift with increasing thiophene number. Solution processed bulk heterojunction all-polymer solar cells are fabricated using polymers P1–P3 as acceptor and polythiophene derivative PT5TPA as donor. Power conversion efficiencies (upto 0.84%) increase with increasing thiophene number in the polymer acceptors.
Terthiophene-based D-A Polymer with an Asymmetric Arrangement of Alkyl Chains That Enables Efficient Polymer Solar Cells.

Abstract:We report a series of difluorobenzothiadizole (ffBT) and oligothiophene-based polymers with the oligothiophene unit being quaterthiophene (T4), terthiophene (T3), and bithiophene (T2). We demonstrate that a polymer based on ffBT and T3 with an asymmetric arrangement of alkyl chains enables the fabrication of 10.7% efficiency thick-film polymer solar cells (PSCs) without using any processing additives. By decreasing the number of thiophene rings per repeating unit and thus increasing the effective density of the ffBT unit in the polymer backbone, the HOMO and LUMO levels of the T3 polymers are significantly deeper than those of the T4 polymers, and the absorption onset of the T3 polymers is also slightly red-shifted. For the three T3 polymers obtained, the positions and size of the alkyl chains play a critical role in achieving the best PSC performances. The T3 polymer with a commonly known arrangement of alkyl chains (alkyl chains sitting on the first and third thiophenes in a mirror symmetric manner) yields poor morphology and PSC efficiencies. Surprisingly, a T3 polymer with an asymmetric arrangement of alkyl chains (which is later described as having an "asymmetric bi-repeating unit") enables the best-performing PSCs. Morphological studies show that the optimized ffBT-T3 polymer forms a polymer:fullerene morphology that differs significantly from that obtained with T4-based polymers. The morphological changes include a reduced domain size and a reduced extent of polymer crystallinity. The change from T4 to T3 comonomer units and the novel arrangement of alkyl chains in our study provide an important tool to tune the energy levels and morphological properties of donor polymers, which has an overall beneficial effect and leads to enhanced PSC performance.

Abstract:We have designed and synthesized two wide bandgap new donor‐acceptor (D‐A) copolymers consisting of the same alkylthiazole‐substituted benzo[1,2‐b;4,5‐b′]dithiophene (BDTTz) donor unit and but different acceptor units, i.e., thiazolo[5,4‐d]thiazole (TTZ) (P122) and 1,3,‐4 thiadiazole (TDz) (P123) and investigated their optical and electrochemical properties. We have employed these copolymers as donor and fullerene (PC71BM) and narrow bandgap non‐fullerene (Y6) as acceptor, to fabricate binary and ternary bulk heterojunction polymer solar cells (PSCs). The overall power conversion efficiency (PCE) of optimized binary bulk heterojunction PSCs based on P122:Y6 and P123:Y6 is 12.60% and 13.16%, respectively. The higher PCE for PSCs based on P123 than P122 counterparts may be associated with the broader absorption profile of the P123 and more charge carrier mobilities than that for the P122 active layer. With the incorporation of small amount of PC71BM into either P122:Y6 or P123:Y6 binary blend, the corresponding ternary PSCs showed an overall PCE of 14.89% and 15.52%, respectively, which is higher than the binary counterparts using either Y6 or PC71BM as acceptor. Incorporating the PC71BM in the binary host blend increases the absorption in the 300–500 nm wavelength region, generating more excitons in the active ternary layer and helping to dissociate the excitons into free charge carriers more effectively. The more appropriate nanoscale phase separation in the active ternary layer than the binary counterpart may be one of the reasons for higher PCE.

Abstract:A series of D-A copolymers (P1-P3) based on a thiophene fused benzotriazole (BTAZT) unit and a 4,8-bis(4-fluorothiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b: 4,5-b'] dithiophene (BDTFT) unit have been designed and synthesized as electron-donating materials for non-fullerene polymer solar cells (PSCs) with ITIC as an electron-accepting material. The fusion of a thiophene ring with a BTAZ unit and introduction of a fluorine atom at the BDTT unit have been concurrently performed to regulate the absorption properties and energy levels, and two different alkyl side-chains have also been introduced to BTAZT and BDTFT units, respectively, to investigate the influence of side-chains on the properties of the polymers as well as the photovoltaic performances of the PSCs. The photovoltaic performance evaluation in combination with morphology characterization indicates that the introduction of a 2-ethylhexyl group simultaneously at BTAZT and BDTFT units is favourable for intermolecular pi-pi interaction that improves the morphologies and crystalline domain of P1: ITIC blend film, thus enhancing the charge mobility and the short-circuit current density (J(sc)). But the large steric hindrance of the 2-butyloctyl group to replace the 2-ethylhexyl group at BDTFT (P2) or BTAZT (P3) deteriorates intermolecular interaction that leads to the decrease of charge mobility and poor Jsc. Thus, P1 based PSCs exhibit the highest power conversion efficiency of 7.14% with the best J(sc) (14.11 +/- 0.27 mA cm(-2)) and fill factor (63.41 +/- 1.46%) among P1-P3 polymers.
Alternating Dithienobenzoxadiazole-Based Conjugated Polymers for Field-Effect Transistors and Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:Three new alternating copolymers derived from dithienobenzoxadizole (DTfBO) and different thiophene-based pi-spacers, including terthiophene, quarterthiophene, and dithienyl flanked thienothiophene, were successfully synthesized. The DTfBO-based polymers possess optical band-gaps in the range of 1.84 -1.89 eV and exhibit relatively deep HOMO levels between -5.36 eV and -5.50 eV. Due to strong interchain aggregation, DTfBO-based polymers could not be well dissolved in chlorobenzene at room temperature, but they could be processed with hot chlorobenzene solutions of similar to 100 degrees C. Evolutions of UV absorption spectra of polymer solutions during heating process could differentiate their different aggregation ability, among which a repeating unit based on a DTfBO and a terthiophene could supply the strongest inter-chain interaction. Notably, the three DTfBO-based polymers displayed high field-effect hole mobilities between 0.21 and 0.54 cm(2)/(V s). In polymer solar cells (PSCs) with the three polymers as the donors, high open-circuit voltages between 0.87 and 0.93 V could be realized. For active layer thickness of 80 nm, the PSCs displayed power conversion efficiency (PCE) between 2.85% and 5.07%. A very high fill factor of 75.4% was achieved for the polymer comprising dithienyl flanked thienothiophene. With thicker ative layers of 250 nm, the three DTfBO-based polymers exhibited comparable PCEs of similar to 5.61% due to obviously increased short-circuit currents. Our results suggest that DTfBO, a big coplanar heterocycle, is a promising building block to construct high mobility conjugated polymers for efficient thick-film PSCs. (c) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Two conjugated alternating copolymers of thiazolothiazole with benzodithiophene (P1) or bithiazole (P2) were synthesized by a palladium(0)-catalyzed Stille coupling reaction. The thermal, electrochemical, optical, charge transport, and photovoltaic properties of these copolymers were examined. Compared with P1, P2 exhibits red shifted absorption, a lower band gap, and a lower HOMO level. The field-effect hole mobility of P1 is as high as 2.8 x 10(-3) cm(2) V-1 s(-1), which is I order of magnitude higher than that of P2. Polymer solar cells were fabricated based on the blend of the polymers and methanofullerene[6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM). The PSC based on P1:PC61BM (1:2, w/w) exhibits a power conversion efficiency of 2.72% under AM 1.5, 100 mW cm(-2), higher than that reported for the thiazolothiazole-based polymers in the literature.

Abstract:Two new alternating low bandgap copolymers from benzodithiophene and benzotriazole units, namely poly{4,8-bis(2-ethylhexyloxy)benzo[1,2-b; 3,4-b]dithiophene-2,6-diyl-alt-2-octyl-4,7-di(thiophen-2-yl)-2H-benzo[d][1,2,3]triazole-5′,5′′-diyl} (PBDTDTBTz) and poly{4,8-bis(2-ethylhexyloxy)benzo[1,2-b;3,4-b]dithiophene-2,6-diyl-alt-2-dodecylbenzotriazole-4,7-diyl} (PBDTBTz), were designed and synthesized by a typical Stille coupling polymerization method. The copolymers were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, UV-vis absorption and cyclic voltammetry. PBDTDTBTz and PBDTBTz possess moderate molecular weights and excellent thermal properties with a 5% weight loss temperatures (Td) around 300 °C. They exhibited good optical absorption, with peaks at 527 nm and 562 nm in the film state, respectively. Photovoltaic properties of the copolymers blended with [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) or [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as electron acceptors, were investigated. The photovoltaic device with the PBDTDTBTz/PC71BM shows a power conversion efficiency of 1.7% with a short circuit current density of 4.5 mA cm−2 and a good fill factor of 0.62, while PBDTBTz demonstrated a moderate power conversion efficiency of up to 1.4%, under the illumination of AM 1.5, 100 mW cm−2 with a device structure of ITO/PEDOT: PSS/polymer: PC71BM (1:4)/Ca/Al. All the above information highlighted that this kind of the copolymers is promising for the application of polymer solar cells.

Abstract:Electron-accepting solution-processable conjugated polymers consisting of perylene diimide moieties alternating with dithienothiophene, oligo(dithienothiophene), or N-dodecyl dithienopyrrole units have been synthesized. All these polymers possess excellent thermal stability with decomposition temperatures over 400 °C. The glass-transition temperatures vary from 155 to 263 °C. These polymers show broad absorption extending from 250 to 900 nm with electrochemical and optical bandgaps as low as 1.4 eV; the maximum absorbance increases and the bandgap decreases with increasing the conjugation length of oligo(dithienothiophene), while the bandgap can also be decreased by the replacement of dithienothiophene by dithienopyrrole. The electrochemical onset reduction potentials range from −0.8 to −1.0 V vs. ferrocenium/ferrocene, suggesting that the electron affinities are essentially unaffected by the specific choice of donor moiety, while the onset oxidation potentials (+0.6 to +1.0 V) are a little more sensitive to the choice of donor. The mono dithienothiophene and the dithienopyrrole polymers were found to exhibit electron mobilities as high as 1.3 × 10−2 and 1.2 × 10−3 cm2V−1s−1, respectively, in top-contact organic field-effect transistors. Power conversion efficiencies in the range 0.77–1.1% were obtained under simulated AM 1.5, 100 mW/cm2 irradiation for all-polymer solar cells using the dithienothiophene-based polymers as acceptors in a 1 : 1 ratio with a polythiophene derivative as a donor. The device performance varies with the conjugation length of oligo(dithienothiophene) in the polymer acceptors, and for the best-performing material it can be further optimized to give a power conversion efficiency of 1.5% by increasing the donor/acceptor weight ratio to 3 : 1.

Abstract:Two novel copolymers incorporating N-alkyl-4,7-di(thien-2-yl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole-5,6-dicarboxylic imide (DI) and benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene (BDT) units have been designed, synthesized, and characterized. By the incorporation of the DI unit, both polymers show a bathochromically shifted absorption with a deep lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level. The polymer based on thienyl group substituted BDT exhibits an intense absorption in the longer-wavelength region, a deeper lying HOMO energy level, and a higher carrier mobility, all of which contribute to the resulting polymer solar cells with a higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.19% and an increased Voc of 0.91 V.

Abstract:The tandem solar cell architecture is an effective way to harvest a broader part of the solar spectrum and make better use of the photonic energy than the single junction cell. Here, we present the design, synthesis, and characterization of a series of new low bandgap polymers specifically for tandem polymer solar cells. These polymers have a backbone based on the benzodithiophene (BDT) and diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) units. Alkylthienyl and alkylphenyl moieties were incorporated onto the BDT unit to form BDTT and BDTP units, respectively; a furan moiety was incorporated onto the DPP unit in place of thiophene to form the FDPP unit. Low bandgap polymers (bandgap = 1.4-1.5 eV) were prepared using BDTT, BDTP, FDPP, and DPP units via Stille-coupling polymerization. These structural modifications lead to polymers with different optical, electrochemical, and electronic properties. Single junction solar cells were fabricated, and the polymer:PC71BM active layer morphology was optimized by adding 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO) as an additive. In the single-layer photovoltaic device, they showed power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 3-6%. When the polymers were applied in tandem solar cells, PCEs over 8% were reached, demonstrating their great potential for high efficiency tandem polymer solar cells.

Abstract:Unlike normal donor-acceptor (D-A) polymers containing only one electron-deficient segment in their repeating unit, the incorporation of two electron-deficient moieties with different absorption behaviors, forming a D-A(1)-D-A(2) internal structure in the alternating copolymer, showed a broader absorption spectrum than its constituent parts and enhanced photovoltaic performance. This work is anticipated to open the door to the design of new low bandgap polymers with a broader absorption range for efficient polymer solar cells.

Abstract:A soluble conjugated alternating 3,5-didecanyldithieno[3,2-b:2′,3′-d]thiophene–thiophene copolymer was synthesized by palladium(0)-catalyzed Stille coupling reaction. The thermal, absorption, emission, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties of the polymer were examined. A weight-average molecular weight around 6.2×104 and a polydispersity index of 1.8 was estimated for the polymer using gel permeation chromatography. The polymer exhibits good thermal stability with decomposition temperature of 340°C and glass-transition temperature of 136°C. The polymer shows strong absorption peaked at 505nm in diluted solution and 518nm in thin film with an optical band gap 2.0eV. The polymer exhibits intense emission located at 550nm in solution and 603nm in film. The HOMO and LUMO energies of the polymer were estimated to be −5.4 and −3.4eV, respectively, by cyclic voltammetry. Polymer solar cells were fabricated based on the blend of the polymer and methanofullerene [6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). The power conversion efficiency of 0.7% was achieved under AM 1.5, 100mW/cm2 using polymer:PCBM (1:4, w/w) as active layer.
Terpolymer Containing a meta-Octyloxy-phenyl-Modified Dithieno[3,2- f:2',3'- h]quinoxaline Unit Enabling Efficient Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:With the rapid development of small-molecule electron acceptors, polymer electron donors are becoming more important than ever in organic photovoltaics, and there is still room for the currently available high-performance polymer donors. To further develop polymer donors with finely tunable structures to achieve better photovoltaic performances, random ternary copolymerization is a useful technique. Herein, by incorporating a new electron-withdrawing segment 2,3-bis(3-octyloxyphenyl)dithieno[3,2-f:2',3'-h]quinoxaline derivative (C12T-TQ) to PM6, a series of terpolymers were synthesized. It is worth noting that the introduction of the C12T-TQ unit can deepen the highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels of the resultant polymers. In addition, the polymer Z6 with a 10% C12T-TQ ratio possesses the highest film absorption coefficient (9.86 × 104 cm-1) among the four polymers. When blended with Y6, it exhibited superior miscibility and mutual crystallinity enhancement between Z6 and Y6, suppressed recombination, better exciton separation and charge collection characteristics, and faster hole transfer in the D-A interface. Consequently, the device of Z6:Y6 successfully achieved enhanced photovoltaic parameters and yielded an efficiency of 17.01%, higher than the 16.18% of the PM6:Y6 device, demonstrating the effectiveness of the meta-octyloxy-phenyl-modified dithieno[3,2-f:2',3'-h]quinoxaline moiety to build promising terpolymer donors for high-performance organic solar cells.
D-A Copolymers Based on 6,7-Difluoroquinoxaline: Synthesis and Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:Fluorinated quinoxaline(FTQ)is an electron-accepting unit to construct D-A conjugated polymers for polymer solar cells(PSC). In this work, a new synthetic route from a new starting material was proposed for the FTQ monomer, from which FTQ-based new copolymers FTQ-4T and FTQ-1T with quaterthiophene(4T)and single thiophene(1T)as the D-unit, respectively,were successfully synthesized. The molecular weights, thermal properties, UV-vis absorptions, energy levels, and photovoltaic performances of the two copolymers were evaluated.Polymer solar cells show power conversion efficiencies of 0.73% and 1.28% for PFTQ-4T and PFTQ-1T, respectively. Too low LUMO levels of the two copolymers should be responsible for their not high power conversion efficiencies.
