Abstract:Lu Xun started his literary career in Japan as an introducer of foreign literature. For a time, he adopted a translation method similar to that of the other translators of the same period. But the publication of the two volumes of Yuwai Xiashuoji (Collection of Stories from Abroad), in collaboration with his brother Zhou Zuoren, in 1909 marked a drastic turn. They gave up the extremely liberal manner in translating and adopted a literal approach. Even the choice of works for translation was very different. Unfortunately, the venture was a failure, both in terms of the sales figure and the impact. It was not until the 1920s when the Zhou brothers gained great fame as forerunners of modern Chinese literature that the collections were reprinted at the suggestion of their friends. The present paper attempts to give a detailed study of this translation venture of the Zhou brothers, covering the choice of works, the translation strategy and the reasons of their failure. The analysis will be put against the background of late Qing and May Fourth literary translation, and Yuwai xiaoshuoji will be examined in relation to the earlier translation and literary activities of the Zhou brothers. It will demonstrate that the dominant role of the venture was in fact played by Zhou Zuoren rather than Lu Xun, as long asserted by scholars in China.
