Abstract:It is unquestionably a great challenge to develop elastic cellulose nanofibril (CNF) based aerogels satisfying both excellent oil-water separation and efficient PM2.5 removal. In this work, the CNF based aerogel with a layersupport structure was design through CNF as the aerogel scaffold and compositing with bamboo activated charcoal (BAC) and Fe3O4 as the functional particles, followed by hydrophobic modification. The resultant aerogel displays ultra-low density (30.12 mg/cm3), good specific surface area (25.38 m2/g), magnetism (9.44 emu/g) and superhydrophobicity (water contact angle (WCA) of 153.8 degrees and slide angle (SA) of 7 degrees). Benefiting from high internal porosity of the layer-support structure, the system shows excellent absorption efficiency (16.79-51.93 g/g) for various oils and filtration efficiency (97.85 +/- 1.2%) for PM2.5 with a low pressure drop (58 Pa). As well as it also shows outstanding mechanical properties and able to maintain a high recovery of 75.4% at 50% strain (corresponding 25.29 kPa) due to the flexibility of the "support" structure given by methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS). Based on its simple preparation and excellent properties, the magnetic and superhydrophobic CNF/Fe3O4@BAC composite aerogel shows great potential in multifaceted separation technique and recycling of natural resources.

Abstract:As a novel nanoporous carbon material with high porosity, large specific surface area, excellent electrical conductivity and high temperature resistance, carbon aerogels have broad application prospects in the fields of catalyst carriers, energy storage and adsorption materials. In this work, the hydrophobic micro-convex rough interface cellulose carbon aerogels (CCAs) were fabricated via carbonization of cellulose-lithium bromide (LiBr) molten salt hydrate gelled system. The prepared CCAs shows a low density (0.016–0.023 g/cm3), high porosity (98.9–99.2 %), superior hydrophobicity (water contact angle over 135°) and excellent absorption of different oils and organic solvents. The absorption ability of CCAs 1.0-T800 for different oils and organic solvents can be 25–55 times its own weight. More importantly, the CCAs adsorbent can be reused by simple absorption/distillation method and still kept high-efficiency oil absorption capacity and excellent hydrophobicity after 5 absorption/elution cycles, displaying recyclability and robust stability. This study provides a green and facile way to fabrication of cellulose II carbon aerogels for application in spilled oil recovery, and exhibited highly promising as an economical, efficient and safe adsorbent for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Nanostructured carbon aerogels with outstanding physicochemical properties have exhibited great application potentials in widespread fields and therefore attracted extensive attentions recently. It is still a challenge so far to develop flexible and economical routes to fabricate high-performance nanocarbon aerogels, preferably based on renewable resources. Here, ultralight and multifunctional reduced graphene oxide/carbon nanofiber (RGO/CNF) aerogels are fabricated from graphene oxide and low-cost, industrially produced bacterial cellulose by a three-step process of freeze-casting, freeze-drying, and pyrolysis. The prepared RGO/CNF aerogel possesses a very low apparent density in the range of 0.7-10.2 mg cm(-3) and a high porosity up to 99%, as well as a mechanically robust and electrically conductive 3D network structure, which makes it to be an excellent candidate as absorber for oil clean-up and an ideal platform for constructing flexible and stretchable conductors.
Graphene/nanofiber Aerogels: Performance Regulation Towards Multiple Applications in Dye Adsorption and Oil/water Separation

Abstract:The fabrication of multifunctional graphene-based aerogels is challenging due to the difficulty in controlling the structures and properties to satisfy various demands. Herein, we develop a versatile graphene oxide/nanofiber aerogel (GNA), in which cellulose acetate nanofibers are introduced in graphene aerogels for the first time to prevent the sheets from over-stacking and enhance connectivity of cell walls. This GNA exhibits excellent underwater stability and high adsorption capacity (> 800 mg/g) towards cationic dyes. Its density, pore structure and mechanical properties are easily tuned by varying the composition as well as compression deformation. The reshaping ability of GNA combined with co-deposition of polydopamine and polyethyleneimine makes it a superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic and shape-stable material to quickly separate oil-in-water emulsions with an extremely high flux (> 19,000 Lm(-2) h(-1) bar(-1)). On the other hand, after chemical modification and crosslinking via vapor deposition of hexadecyltrimethoxysilane, GNA turns to be a superhydrophobic and superelastic material that can adsorb organic liquids with an adsorption capacity of 230-734 g/g, being superior to most of known adsorbents. The materials are mass-producible and combine mechanical robustness and easy regeneration, providing a simple strategy for fabrication of multifunctional graphene-based aerogels satisfying various applications in water treatment.
Facile Preparation of Superior Compressibility and Hydrophobic Graphene@Cellulose Nanocrystals/Epdm Hybrid Aerogels for Enhanced Electromagnetic Interference Shielding and Highly Efficient Oil/Organic Solvent Adsorption

Abstract:Design of graphene composite aerogel with intriguing attributes usually complicates the preparation process. It is still challenging to achieve high-performance graphene aerogel in a feasible way. Herein, graphene@cellulose nanocrystals/EPDM composite aerogel (rGCA/EPDM) with well-ordered lamellar porous structure and interconnected networks was prepared through a facile strategy of chemical reduction and self-assembly under natural drying condition. Interfacial bonding formed in the composite aerogel, and CNCs acted as reinforcing skeleton and EPDM chains provided crosslinking elastic network in the composite aerogel, which endowed rGCA/EPDM with superior compressibility and recoverability (up to 90% strain), excellent mechanical flexibility, enhanced EMI SE and effective adsorption performance for oil/water separation. The hydrophobic rGCA/EPDM could adsorb various oils and organic solvents from water phase, meanwhile the absorbed solvents could be recovered by continuous adsorption-desorption process and the adsorption capacity only slightly reduced after 10 adsorption-squeezing or adsorption-volatilization cycles, revealing the good structural stability and recyclable adsorption performance due to its hydrophobicity and robust hierarchical porous structure. Moreover, the composite aerogel could realize real-time adsorption of organic solvent from water surface by pumping force. Such an effective strategy obtaining the composite aerogel exhibits a promising potential in oil cleanup and pollution remediation field.
Ultralight, Super-compression, and Hydrophobic Nanofibrous Aerogels from Cellulose Acetate/Polyethylene Oxide Nanofibers for Efficient and Recyclable oil adsorption

Abstract:Adsorbent materials with high absorptive capacity, stable mechanical properties, greenness and economy are highly desirable for efficient removal and recovery of oil from wastewater. Herein, an ultralight, low-cost and reusable hydrophobic aerogel of cellulose acetate/polyethylene oxide hybrid nanofibers was developed through thermally crosslinking and organosilicon modification. Through thermal crosslinking and ice crystal template, a hierarchical pore structure was obtained which endowed the aerogel with mechanical stability and oil-absorption capacity. In addition, the structure was furtherly strengthened after chemical vapor deposition of methyl trichlorosilane good hydrophobicity (contact angle of 135.5°) can be realized. The surface-modified aerogel presented ultralow density (8.74 mg cm-3), excellent resilience (completely recover to its original height after 50 compression cycles), high absorption capacity (weight gain of 63-128 g/g) and reusability. Therefore, the nanofibrous aerogels with outstanding compressive resilience and reusability make it promising to meet the increasing demand in the field of oil pollution cleaning.

Abstract:Due to the lightweight feature, superior hydrophobic and oleophilic property, as well as remarkable adsorption capability, carbon-based aerogels have become appealing adsorbents for removing leaking oils and toxic organic contaminants. Herein, a highly compressible and lightweight hybrid aerogels were fabricated with organic aramid nanofibers (ANF) and inorganic Al 2 O 3 -doped honeycomb-like porous carbon nanofibers (Al 2 O 3 /PCNF) through a freeze-drying method. Thanks to the organic–inorganic hybridization approach, the optimal Al 2 O 3 /PCNF@ANF aerogels achieved excellent mechanical compressibility, maintaining over 95% of the compressive stress after 100 cycles with a 40% strain. Besides, benefiting from the macroscopic macro-porous lamellar structure of aerogels and microscopic hierarchical porous structure of Al 2 O 3 /PCNF, an extremely low density of 0.0178 g/cm 3 was achieved. As oil-adsorption material, the aerogels displayed outstanding adsorption capacity for various organic solvents and oils, especially for dichloromethane of 71.8 g g −1 , which was as high as 72 times than the weight of original aerogels. Furthermore, the adsorbed oils or organic solvents could be recovered through simple mechanical squeezing, while maintaining a high oil-adsorption efficiency of 90.01% over 10 cycles. Moreover, it could continuously separate dichloromethane from dichloromethane–water mixture with high flux of 10,559 Lm −2. h −1 , even for surfactant-stabilized water-in- n -heptane emulsions of 5807 Lm −2. h −1 . Such a well-designed Al 2 O 3 /PCNF@ANF aerogels were expected to be a promising economical and efficient oil adsorption and separation material.

Mechanically Flexible Carbon Aerogel with Wavy Layers and Springboard Elastic Supporting Structure for Selective Oil/Organic Solvent Recovery

Abstract:Even though compressible carbon aerogels are widely studied for oil/organic solvent recovery, it is challenging to simultaneously achieve excellent mechanical performance and recovery efficiency due to the brittleness of the carbon skeleton. Here a novel strategy is proposed to efficiently fabricate a 3D elastic reduced graphene oxide (RGO)-cross-linked carbon aerogel. Notably, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) isolated from plant pulp act as an essential component, and prehydrolysis liquor (PHL), an industrial byproduct in the plant pulping process, serves as the adhesion promoter to achieve enhancement of the strength and flexibility of the carbon aerogel. For the first time, all components (pulp and PHL) of the tree were fully exploited to design a carbon aerogel. The formation of wavy carbon layers with springboard elastic supporting microstructure enables mechanical stretch and shrink as well as avoids interfacial collapse during compression. Benefiting from the unique wavy layer structure and strong interaction, the carbon aerogels are ultralight (4.98 mg cm–3) and exhibit supercompression (undergoing extreme strain of 95%) and superelasticity (about 100% height retention after 500 cycles at a strain of 50%). Particularly, the carbon aerogel can selectively and quickly adsorb various oily contaminants, exhibiting high oil/organic solvents absorption capacity (reaches up to 276 g g–1 for carbon tetrachloride) and good recyclability. Finally, practical applications of the carbon aerogel in oil-cleanup and pollution-remediation devices are exhibited. Fabrication of elastic SiO2 aerogels with prominent mechanical strength and stability reinforced by SiO2 nanofibers and polyurethane for oil adsorption

Abstract:The separation of oil from wastewater and materials for oil absorption are highly demanded in the modern industrialization. For these purposes, silica aerogels with high hydrophobicity and surface aera and low density are promising candidates for oil absorption, but limited by the poor mechanical strength and structure stability during the usage. In this study, we presented a novel compressive silica aerogel by silica nanofiber (SNF) reinforcement and subsequent hydrophobic polyurethane strengthening via moisture curing (PSAG). The obtained PSAG exhibits unique core/shell fibrous reinforcement and prominent crosslinked network structure. The porous PSAG has a porosity of 81.06 % and density of 0.43 g cm−3 at solid content of 20 %. The hydrophobic PSAG shows an impressive sorption capacity towards CH2Cl2 (11.2 g g−1), THF (5.5 g g−1) and acetone (3.8 g g−1), being able to separate 100 % of oils from an immiscible oil–water mixture. The PSAG shows exceptional resistance to acidic and alkaline conditions and has high flexibility and desirable reusability in repeatedly oil adsorption. Most importantly, the mechanical strength of SAG can be improved to 0.27 MPa of PSAG at prepolymer solid content of 20 %, and no cracking or deformation were observed after 50 cycles. Additionally, the PSAG shows impressive thermal insulation and flame retardancy performance in the air, which should have potential application as insulator for the solar evaporation for the purification of wastewater. This work provides new understanding and insight for further design and optimization of polyurethane-based reinforced aerogels.

Abstract:The simultaneous achievement of graphene aerogels with low density, high adsorption capacity and selectivity, as well as high mechanical strength, holds great significance but remains a challenging task. By adjusting the concentration and ratio of graphene oxide, dopamine and L-ascorbic acid, the hydrogel without obvious volume shrinkage and stability was synthesized by hydrothermal reaction at low temperature, after freeze-drying and calcination, nitrogen doped graphene aerogel (NGA) with ultralight, superhydrophobic, superoleophilic, fire-resistant, and compressible/recoverable were obtained. The density of NGA is only about 1.9 mg/cm 3 , and the water and oil contact angles in air are 153.3° and 0°, respectively. Given the aforementioned beneficial features, NGA can efficiently select and adsorb multifarious of oils and organic solvents in oil/water mixtures so as to achieve oil/water separation. Remarkably, NGA exhibits an impressive adsorption capacity of up to 150–305 times its own weight, and it also possesses excellent adsorption recyclability. Therefore, NGA has great potential in the treatment of oil pollution in the water environment.

Abstract:In this work, in order to ameliorate the hydrophobic property and adsorption capacity of nanocellulose (NC) aerogel, the nanochitosan (NCS) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) have been introduced into the NC aerogel to construct the NC/NCS/rGO nanocomposite aerogel by a hydrothermal method combined with freeze-drying method. The optimal conditions including the effect of NC and NCS weight percentages for preparation of NC/NCS/rGO nanocomposite aerogel with good porous microstructures and excellent adsorption capacities have been evaluated. The results demonstrate that the NC/NCS/rGO nanocomposite aerogel produced under the fabrication condition of 0.1 wt% NCS and 0.05 wt% NC exhibits a very low density of 9.3 mg cm−3, a high hydrophobicity with a large water contact angle (115.26°) and the high adsorption capacities of 171.85 ± 3.02, 159.64 ± 1.83, 153.22 ± 2.92, 149.60 ± 6.26, 139.93 ± 3.69, 132.47 ± 3.45, 176.82 ± 4.66, 128.70 ± 0.69, and 120.34 ± 5.57 g g−1 to mineral oil, sesame oil, acetone, ethyl acetate, thiophene, pump oil, waste pump oil, kerosene, and ethyl alcohol, respectively. In addition, this aerogel adsorbent could efficiently and continuously remove/collect the oil from wastewater confirmed by a designed oil/water pump apparatus. As a consequence, this NC/NCS/rGO nanocomposite aerogel has a potential application in the oil and organic solvent adsorption.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Nano-cellulose aerogels have low densities, high porosities, and strong absorption capacities, making them suitable for cleaning up oil and chemical spills in oceans. However, their weak lipophilicity and poor mechanical properties often limit their applications. We attempted to introduce long-chain polymers on the nanocellulose/polyvinyl alcohol (CNF/PVA) surface for the hydrophobic modification of aerogels. In this paper, PVA/CNF was silylated by introducing hydrolyzed ethyltrimethoxysilane to increase its hydrophobicity. Aerogels with interpenetrating pore structures were prepared by a directional freezing method. The aerogels had a high strength in the freezing direction and high compressive elasticity in the direction perpendicular to the freezing direction. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and water contact angle (148°) tests demonstrated the successful silylation of the aerogel surface. The aerogel absorbed oil and some organic solvents 50–110 times higher than its own weight. It showed good reusability, with an absorption loss rate of 20% after 40 squeezing cycles. This green and sustainable method is inexpensive and has a short production cycle. In addition, the absorption of alcohols and lipids by aerogels can be used as a carrier for surgical drugs.

Polydopamine Induced Wettability Switching of Cellulose Nanofibers/n-Dodecanethiol Composite Aerogels

Abstract:The novel wettability switchable cellulose nanofiber(CNF-) based aerogel was conveniently prepared by polydopamine mediated composition of CNF and n-dodecanethiol. The wettability of aerogels can be controlled by adjusting the PDA and ndodecanethiol loading content, which leads to a variation of water contact angle from 0-149°. The PDA was coated on cellulose nanofibers via hydrogen bonds and then n-dodecanethiol was anchored onto the scaffolds by Michael addition reaction, which was revealed by XPS and FTIR spectra. The composite aerogel can selectively absorb a series of oily liquids from the oil/water mixture, with the maximum absorption capacity of 68 g/g. This work presented a facile strategy to prepare wettability switchable CNF-based heterogenous aerogel and exhibited the potential of the composite aerogel for oil/water separation.
Hierarchical aerogels based on cellulose nanofibers and long-chain polymers for enhancing oil–water separation efficiency

Abstract:The hydrophobic chain length of biomass-based aerogels used for oil–water separation was evaluated as a major parameter influencing the aerogels' hydrophobicity. The properties of the porous structure were enhanced by the hierarchical assembly of the aerogels with biopolymeric structural units and polymer mineralization. The cellulose network was strengthened through silanization, and the nanocellulose network was further enhanced through coating with mineralizers containing long-chain hydrophobic molecules. Interfacial engineering was employed to establish multiscale interactions through the freeze-drying-induced modification of cellulose nanofibers and mineralized coatings of long-chain alkyl polymers. The resulting hierarchically structured aerogel exhibits low density (11.4 kg/m 3 ), excellent mechanical compression properties across a wide temperature range (capable of enduring 100 cycles of compression), high porosity (99.2%), superhydrophobicity (152°), and recyclability. It maintains a 57.9% adsorption rate even after 40 adsorption–desorption tests, while also preserving its shape integrity. Moreover, it can be recycled and reused. At a temperature of 700 °C, the mass loss was only 44.47%, with excellent thermal stability. The aerogel can reduce oil pollutants in the ocean by adsorption, recover oil resources, and protect the natural environment. The assembly and optimization of nanofibrous matrix interfaces through the mineralization of long-chain polymers enhanced the performance of functionalized cellulose-based aerogels.

Chemical Foaming Coupled Self-Etching: A Multiscale Processing Strategy for Ultrahigh-Surface-Area Carbon Aerogels.

Abstract:Due to the unique structure, carbon aerogels have always shown great potential for multifunctional applications. At present, it is highly desirable but remains challenging to tailor the microstructures with respect to porosity and specific surface area to further expand its significance. A facile chemical foaming coupled self-etching strategy is developed for multiscale processing of carbon aerogels. The strategy is directly realized via the pyrolysis of a multifunctional precursor (pentaerythritol melamine phosphate) without any special drying process and multiple steps. In the micrometer scale, the macroporous scaffold structures with interconnected and strutted carbon nanosheets are built up by chemical foaming from decomposition of melamine, whereas the meso/microporous nanosheets are formed via self-etching by phosphorus-containing species. The delicately hierarchical structures and record-breaking specific surface area of 2668.4 m2 g-1 render the obtained carbon aerogels great potentials for absorption (324.1-593.6 g g-1 of absorption capacities for varied organic solvents) and energy storage (338 F g-1 of specific capacitance). The construction of such novel carbon nanoarchitecture will also shed light on the design and synthesis of multifunctional materials.
An Architectural Exfoliated-Graphene Carbon Aerogel with Superhydrophobicity and Efficient Selectivity

Abstract:In the study, in order to completely utilize the advantages of graphene monolayer, nano-fibrillated cellulose with cations from polyethyleneimine (PEI) was used as the intercalator to efficiently exfoliate the reduced graphene oxide into a single layer with a thickness about 0.47 nm by means of ionic attraction. After the high-temperature treatment (800 degrees C), the carbon aerogel (NC-GO@NFC) with an architectural structure was manufactured by combining 2D monolayer graphene with 1D nano-fibrillated cellulose. The pore volume (0.55 cm(3)/g) and specific surface area (441 m(2)/g) of NC-GO@NFC were about two times higher than those of GOcarbon aerogel. Particularly, the buoyant porous aerogel showed superhydrophobicity with a large water contact angle (155.5 degrees) due to the increase of -NH- and C-C as well as the pyrolysis of hydrophilic groups. The superhydrophobicity endows the aerogel with an exceptional oil/water separation performance. The carbon aerogels exhibited the adsorption capability towards many organic phases (including lubricating oil and some organic solvents). In addition, the efficient continuous removal and collection of organic solvents (methylbenzene) from water surface was achieved by a designed water/oil pump device. Therefore, the recyclable 3D porous composite aerogel had the application potential as organic solvent adsorbents and oil/water separation agents. (C) 2019 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
Low-density, high-strength and large-scaled monolithic carbon aerogels fabricated via modified ambient pressure drying

Abstract:A low-density, high-specific surface area, high-strength and large-sized carbon aerogel preparation process is a key technology in the industrial application of aerogel science. In recent years, ingenious nanostructure design, along with salt templates, drying optimization and other strategies have been applied by numerous scientists. As a result, the specific surface area of carbon aerogel has significantly increased and the density reduced. However, the preparation of high-strength and large-sized intact carbon aerogel at low cost is still a challenge due to the limitations of thermal treatment equipment and drying process. In this study, we propose an improved preparation method of ambient pressure solvothermal polymerization and auxiliary ambient pressure drying by the principle of acid–base two-step catalysis using resorcinol and furfural as raw materials. Resultantly, the condensation and cross-linking reaction process is stabilized by the ambient pressure solvothermal polymerization, which effectively reinforces the interfacial bonding between primary particles and forms a high-strength skeleton. The breaking strength of the aerogels reach up to 9.74 MPa. The auxiliary ambient pressure drying can greatly reduce the drying shrinkage and density of the aerogel and solve the problems of drying deformation and cracking of large-sized carbon aerogel. The drying shrinkage and density of the obtained carbon aerogels are reduced to 3.22% and 0.203 g/cm 3 , respectively, and the specific surface area reaches 675.057 m 2 /g. Moreover, the large-sized sample (70 mm (d) × 25 mm (h)) can also be prepared by this method since the strength of skeleton can resist the capillary force of pore structure, and the nanoporous architecture can be perfectly retained. Therefore, this study provides a new preparation scheme for the industrial large-scale production and application of carbon aerogel.

Approximate dynamic programming with recursive least-squares temporal difference learning for adaptive traffic signal control

Abstract:In this study, an approximate dynamic programming approach with function approximation is applied to the scheduling of adaptive traffic signal control at isolated intersection. By using the linear function approximation, parameter adjustment is determined by the recursive least-squares temporal difference learning. The traffic modeling is based on the framework of Markov decision process. The proposed method can tackle the problem in the curse of dimensionality caused by the large state-action space in traffic model, especially in the adaptive control mode suggested in this paper. By comparing with other traffic control methods, the simulation results show that, our proposed algorithm can perform efficiently and quite well in real-time operation.

Abstract:Lymph nodes from patients with acute infectious mononucleosis (AIM) typically show marked paracortical expansion and a prominent immunoblastic proliferation that can occur in nodules and sheets, as well as within sinuses. The marked immunoblastic proliferation, coupled with Reed-Sternberg-like cells and a polymorphous inflammatory cell background, may simulate either non-Hodgkin's lymphoma or Hodgkin's disease. A recently described entity, Ki-1-positive lymphoma, or large cell anaplastic lymphoma, shares some clinicopathologic and phenotypic features with AIM and must be considered in the differential diagnosis. The present case describes a 20-year-old male who had signs and symptoms consistent with AIM, which he was later proven serologically to have, but whose cervical lymph node showed features suspicious for large cell anaplastic lymphoma. In addition, the Ki-1 (CD30) antigen was expressed by some of the atypical immunoblasts, further raising this possibility.
Directional, super-hydrophobic cellulose nanofiber/polyvinyl alcohol/montmorillonite aerogels as green absorbents for oil/water separation

Abstract:Nowadays, the problem of oil spill and organic solvent pollution has become more and more serious, and developing a green and efficient treatment method has become a research hotspot. Herein, the preparation of porous super-hydrophobic aerogel by directional freezing with cellulose nanofibre (CNF) as the base material, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the cross-linking agent and montmorillonite (MMT) as the modifier and filler, followed by hydrophobic treatment with chemical vapour deposition is reported. The prepared composite aerogel presented three-dimensional inter-perforation network structure, low density (26.52 mg⋅cm-3 ), high porosity (96.1 %) and good hydrophobicity (water contact angle of 140°). Notably, the composite aerogel has a good adsorption effect on different oils and organic solutions, and its adsorption capacity can reach 40-68 times of its initial weight. After complete adsorption, the aerogel could be easily collected. More importantly, the composite aerogel had high strength, whose compressive stress at 70 % strain reached 0.15 MPa and could bear over 1290 times its weight without deformation after 2 weeks. A new, green, simple and efficient absorbent for the adsorption of oils and organic solvents is provided.
