Abstract:TiO 2 nanoparticles (NP) at top of TiO 2 nanotube (TiO 2 NP@TiO 2 NT) double-layered architecture is constructed to combine the advantages of TiO 2 NP and TiO 2 NT together. This composite TiO 2 NP@TiO 2 NT architecture as photoanode possesses a larger surface area for more QDs loading, and highly tubular structure for electron swift transport. Based on this architecture, CdSe/CdS quantum dots (QDs) have been successfully synthesized by successive ionic layer adsorption reaction (SILAR) method for quantum dots-sensitized solar cell application. The photovoltaic performance of QDSSCs based on TiO 2 NP@TiO 2 NT have been investigated in contrast with bare TiO 2 NP and bare TiO 2 NT architectures with almost the same thickness. The results show that the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of QDSSCs could be enhanced using TiO 2 NP@TiO 2 NT and improved to 3.26%, which is 80% and 38% higher than QDSSCs based on bare TiO 2 NT and bare TiO 2 NP, respectively. The BET surface area, UV–vis absorption spectra, and incident photon to current conversion efficiency (IPCE) measurements results show the evidence that the TiO 2 NP@TiO 2 NT can combine advantages of TiO 2 NP and TiO 2 NT structures together and lead to a higher light harvesting efficiency, electron collecting efficiency, and efficient electron transport.
Photo-assisted Deposition of Ag Nanoparticles on Branched TiO2 Nanorod Arrays for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells with Enhanced Efficiency

Abstract:In this paper, a novel photoanode based on Ag NPs decorated branched TiO2 nanorod arrays (BTNR/Ag) was developed, aiming to utilize the comprehensive advantages of fast electron transport and large surface area of,one-dimensional TiO2 hierarchical structure as well as the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Ag NPs for improving the photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The hierarchical BTNR with abundant branches exhibits a novel matrix for Ag NPs deposition by a facile photo-reduction method. It is interesting that the Ag NPs demonstrate a typical size gradient distribution on BTNR. The high density small Ag NPs (less than 10 nm) at the middle part of BTNR are benefit for photo-generated electrons separation and transfer in dye-sensitized BTNR/Ag, while the large Ag NPs at the upper part of BTNR can act as light scattering layer to enhance light harvesting. The incorporation of Ag NPs in the hybrid nanostructure can also improve the dye-loading. As a result, the DSSC based on BTNR/Ag with appropriate content of Ag NPs exhibits higher power conversion efficiency than the DSSC based on pristine BTNR. However, the deposition of excess Ag NPs in BTNR/Ag causes loss of internal surface area and strong charge recombination, leading to decrease of efficiency. The DSSC based on BTNR/Ag synthesized at a 2 mmol L-1 AgNO3 solution shows the highest conversion efficiency, improved by 513% compared with the pristine BTNR-based DSSC. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Nanotube Film for Quantum Dots Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:A translucent TiO2 nanotube film was fabricated as architecture for quantum dots sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs). The CdS quantum dots (QDs) were deposited on this translucent film by successive ionic layer adsorption reaction (SILAR) method. We analyzed the CdS QDs sensitized TiO2 nanotube by SEM and TEM, which proved that this TiO2 nanotube film can absorb QDs for solar cell application. Based on this translucent TiO2 nanotube film, QDSSC which can be illuminated from photoanode was constructed. In comparison with QDSSC based on TiO2 nanotube grown on Ti foil for illuminated from counter electrode, the photoanode illuminated QDSSC shows a significant improvement of photovoltaic performance. The improved result can be ascribed to the contribution of translucent TiO2 NT film, which provides the possibility for photoanode illumination to reduce the loss of light caused by unwanted reflection and absorption.
The Influence of CdS Intermediate Layer on CdSe/CdS Co-Sensitized Free-Standing TiO2 Nanotube Solar Cells

Abstract:We build CdSe quantum dots (QDs) sensitized TiO2 NT solar cells (CdSe/TiO2 solar cells) by successive ionic layer adsorption reaction (SILAR) method on free-standing translucent TiO2 nanotube (NT) film. The best power conversion efficiency (PCE) 0.74% is obtained with CdSe/TiO2 NT solar cells, however, it is very low. Hence, we introduced the CdS QDs layer located between CdSe QDs and TiO2 NT to achieve an enhanced photovoltaic performance. The J-V test results indicated that the insert of CdS intermediate layer yield a significant improvement of PCE to 2.52%. Combining experimental and theoretical analysis, we find that the effects caused by a translucent TiO2 nanotube film, a better lattices match between CdS and TiO2, and a new formed stepwise band edges structure not only improve the light harvesting efficiency but also increase the driving force of electrons, leading to the improvement of photovoltaic performance.
Synthesis of g-C3N4/Bi2O3/TiO2 composite nanotubes: enhanced activity under visible light irradiation and improved photoelectrochemical activity

Abstract:g-C3N4 and Bi2O3 were successfully incorporated into TiO2 nanotubes (TiO2-NT) to produce a composite nanotube material designated as g-C3N4/Bi2O3/TiO2. The photoelectrochemical (PEC) activity under visible light irradiation with respect to bleaching of methylene blue (MB) and degradation of phenol were determined. The UV-vis absorption spectrum of the composite material, g-C3N4/Bi2O3/TiO2-NT, was red-shifted toward a narrower band gap energy (E-g). The valence band (VB) of g-C3N4/Bi2O3/TiO2-NT was shifted to a more positive potential resulting in an increased driving force for water oxidation. The photocurrent generated by g-C3N4/Bi2O3/TiO2-NTs was approximately 15 times higher and the incident photon-to-current efficiency (IPCE at lambda = 400 nm) was higher than that of the naked TiO2-NTs. This response is attributed to increasing the lifetimes of photo-generated electron-hole pairs. A significantly higher PEC response in terms of the bleaching of MB was observed on g-C3N4/Bi2O3/TiO2-NT. The roles of improved charge separation and subsequent higher electron-transfer efficiencies for in g-C3N4/Bi2O3/TiO2-NT electrodes were examined.

Abstract:A novel nanocomposite of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and TiO2 nanotubes was fabricated and its enhanced photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical properties were demonstrated. Carbon quantum dots were obtained by electrochemical-etching graphite electrodes and TiO2 nanotubes arrays were prepared by anodization methods. Subsequently, CQDs were assembled on the surface of vertically aligned TiO2 nanotube arrays (CQDs/TiO2 nanotubes) and the as-prepared samples were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic measurements. XPS measurement shows the presence of carbon species which come from CQDs. A red shift of light absorption edge and more absorption in the visible light region were observed for the resulting samples from the UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra. An enhanced photocurrent and photopotential were demonstrated for the CQDs sensitized TiO2 nanotubes under visible light irradiation and the photocurrent density was 2.7 times larger than that of pristine TiO2 nanotubes. A solar cell was fabricated for further verifying the sensitization of CQDs over TiO2 nanotubes. Moreover, the photocatalytic activity of CQDs/TiO2 nanotubes towards the degradation of methylene blue was demonstrated and about 14% enhanced degradation efficiency was obtained with the presence of CQDs. This work developed a simple method to fabricate CQDs and demonstrated the introduction of CQDs to be a new approach for improving the utilization of visible light for TiO2 nanotube arrays.

Abstract:Recently, the g-C3N4-based heterojunctions have been widely investigated for their greatly enhanced photogenerated carrier separation efficiency. However, most studies are based on the study of g-C3N4 powders. In this study, a novel TiN/C3N4/CdS nanotube arrays core/shell structure is designed to improve the photoelectrochemical catalytic performance of the g-C3N4-based heterojunctions. Among them, TiN nanotube arrays do not respond to simulated solar light, and thus only serve as an excellently conductive nanotube arrays backbone for supporting g-C3N4/CdS heterojunctions. g-C3N4 prepared by simple liquid atomic layer deposition, which possesses appropriate energy band position, mainly acts as the electron acceptor to transport and separate electrons. Deposited CdS quantum dots obtained by successive ionic layer adsorption reaction can effectively absorb visible light and thus act as a light absorber. The TiN/C3N4/CdS nanotube arrays core/shell structure could be verified by X-ray diffractions, Raman spectra, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy elemental mappings and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Compared with TiN/C3N4 nanotube arrays, the TiN/C3N4/CdS samples greatly improve the photoelectrochemical performance, which can be evaluated by photoelectrochemical tests and photoelectrochemical catalytic degradation. Especially, the optimized photocurrent density of TiN/C3N4/CdS has almost 120 times improvement on TiN/C3N4 at 0 V bias under simulated sunlight, which can be ascribed to the effective expansion of the light absorption range and separation of electron-hole pairs.

Abstract:In the present work we grow anodic TiO$_2$ nanotube layer with tube diameter ~ 500 nm and an open tube mouth. We use this morphology in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) and show that these tubes allow the construction of hybrid hierarchical photoanode structures of nanotubes with a defined and wall-conformance TiO2 nanoparticles decoration. At the same time, the large diameter allows the successful establishment of an additional (insulating) blocking layer of SiO$_2$ or Al$_2$O$_3$. We show that this combination of hierarchical structure and blocking layer significantly enhances the solar cell efficiency by suppressing recombination reactions. In such a DSSC structure, the solar cell efficiency under back side illumination with AM1.5 illumination is enhanced from 5% neat tube to 7 %.

Abstract:This study uses the sol-gel method to prepare TiO2 nanoparticle, and further applies TiO2 nanoparticle coating on the surface of the multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT). As a result, TiO2-CNT composite nanoparticles are prepared to serve as photoelectrode material in dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). First, after acid treatment of MWCNT is used to remove impurities. Then, the sol-gel method is employed to prepare TiO2-CNT composite nanopowder. X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern shows that after the TiO2 in TiO2-CNT composite nanopowder has been thermally treated at 450 degrees C, it can be completely changed to anatase phase. Furthermore, as shown from the SEM image, TiO2 has been successfully coated on CNT. The photoelectrode of DSSC is prepared using the electrophoretic deposition method (EPD) to mix the Degassa P25 TiO2 nanoparticles with TiO2-CNT powder for deposition on the indium tin oxide (ITO) conductive glass. After secondary EPD, a thin film of TiO2/CNTs with thickness 17 microm can be acquired. For the prepared TiO2-CNT composite nanoparticles, since MWCNT can increase the short-circuit current density of DSSC, the light-to-electricity conversion efficiency of DSSC can be effectively increased. Experimental results show that the photoelectric conversion efficiency of DSSC using CNT/TiO2 photoelectrode and N719 dye is increased by 41% from the original 3.45% to 4.87%.

Abstract:Combining carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene or conducting polymers with conventional silicon wafers leads to promising solar cell architectures with rapidly improved power conversion efficiency until recently. Here, we report CNT-Si junction solar cells with efficiencies reaching 15% by coating a TiO 2 antireflection layer and doping CNTs with oxidative chemicals, under air mass (AM 1.5) illumination at a calibrated intensity of 100 mW/cm 2 and an active device area of 15 mm 2 . The TiO 2 layer significantly inhibits light reflectance from the Si surface, resulting in much enhanced short-circuit current (by 30%) and external quantum efficiency. Our method is simple, well-controlled and very effective in boosting the performance of CNT-Si solar cells.

Abstract:Due to the unique structure and excellent properties, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been widely proposed as electrode materials. However, the CNTs typically appear in a format of networks in which charges have to hop through a lot of boundaries with low efficiency. Here we have described a pressing method to produce penetrated and aligned CNT films in which the generated charges can be rapidly separated and transported during the application as electrodes. As a demonstration, they were used as counter electrodes to fabricate dye-sensitized solar cell with an efficiency of ∼8.46%, which was higher than the conventional platinum electrode.
Hybrid TiO2–SnO2 Nanotube Arrays for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:Tin oxide (SnO2) is a promising wide band gap semiconductor material for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) because of its high bulk electron mobility. Employing vertically ordered 1-D nanostruchires of SnO2 as the photoanode may overcome the limit of current DSCs by using new redox mediators with faster kinetics than currently used ones. Synthesizing such nanostructures and integrating them into DSCs, however, has been proven challenging. Here, we demonstrate that, by using ZnO nanowires as a sacrificial template, vertically aligned SnO2 nanotube arrays may be feasibly synthesized through a liquid-phase conversion process, and the synthesized SnO2 nanotubes can be further coated with a thin layer of TiO2 to form hybrid TiO2 SnO2 nanotube arrays. Both the resulting SnO2 and hybrid TiO2-SnO2, nanotube arrays are used to fabricate DSCs, and the best performing cell delivers a promising efficiency of 3.53%. Transient photovoltage measurements indicate that the electron recombination lifetime in hybrid TiO2-SnO2 nanotubes is significantly larger than those in TiO2 nanotubes, ZnO nanowires, and films of sintered TiO2 nanoparticles, suggesting promise of the TiO2-coated SnO2 nanotubes for further improvement of DSCs.

Abstract:Synthesizing highly ordered 1-D TiO2 nanostructures directly on transparent conductive oxides (TCO), which is of key interest for fabricating front-side illuminating dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs), has been one of the most challenging nanofabrication tasks. Here, we present a process for synthesizing vertically aligned TiO2 nanotube arrays on TCO through a liquid-phase Conversion process using ZnO nanowire arrays as a template. The resulting TiO2, nanotube arrays can be easily integrated with the fabrication process of DSCs and lead to significantly improved photovoltaic performance compared to ZnO nanowire-based DSCs. It is also observed that the lifetime of photogenerated electrons in TiO2 nanotubes is more than an order of magnitude larger than that in sintered TiO2 nanoparticles. This result opens tip numerous Opportunities to further improve DSCs, for example, by employing solid-state electrolytes and redox mediators with faster kinetics, which otherwise would be challenging or impossible to implement by the use of nanoparticle-based DSCs.

Abstract:The use of semiconductors as photoelectrochemical electrodes and photocatalysts were studied extensively over the last few decades, but it is challenging that one single material meets a wide range of requirements for applications, such as photostability, wide light absorbance and earth abundant. In this work, we started with earth abundant materials – TiO2, Cu2O and carbon – to design a nanocomposite with TiO2 nanofibers (NFs) and Cu2O nanocubes (NCs) connected by carbon nanowires (NWs). The nanocomposite (C/TiO2/Cu2O) demonstrate excellent photo(electro)activity under simulated visible light as well as enhanced durability. Morphologies imaged by electron microscopes showed that TiO2 NFs and Cu2O NCs were well connected, while thin and long carbon NWs presented thorough out the samples and connected those NFs and NCs to form a compact composite. Electrochemical analysis revealed that the band alignment between TiO2 and Cu2O was typical for a type-II heterojunction, which was favourable for the separation of photogenerated charge carriers while carbon NWs act as bridges further facilitating more efficient charge transfer. Overall, this research work showed the design and preparation of a nanostructured composite with improved charge transfer and photostability for solar photoelectrochemical applications.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets were synthesized to anchor onto the surfaces of directly grown one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on fluorinated tin oxide (FTO) glass. This three-dimensional (3D) vertically aligned hybrid nanoarchitecture was used in Pt-free counter electrodes (CEs) for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The prepared 2D MoS2 nanosheets, with exposed layers, provided a great deal of edge-plane catalytically active sites for I3− reduction. The directly grown 1D CNTs provide an attractive template that offers a large surface area to promote the loading of 2D MoS2 nanosheets for enhancing electrochemical activity. The CNTs directly grown on the FTO substrate provided a high-speed pathway that promoted charge transport and transfer, resulting in a lower electron lifetime that increased the exchange current density and reduced the charge-transfer resistance. The DSSCs assembled with the 3D vertically aligned MoS2/CNT hybrid nanoarchitecture CE achieved a power conversion efficiency of 7.83%, 9.5% higher than that of a cell prepared with a Pt film CE (7.15%).
Au/TiO2 Nanotube Array Based Multi-Hierarchical Architecture for Highly Efficient Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:Control over balanced high light-harvesting and efficient charge transport is of crucial importance for photoelectrochemical applications but still remains great challenge. We develop here single-wall TiO2 nanotube array with in-situ deposited Au nanoparticles. Based on this Au–TiO2 hybrid, we further build a “cigar-like” Au/TiO2-nanotube-array/TiO2-nanoparticles multi-hierarchical architecture through a novel vacuum-assisted colloid-filling approach for dye-sensitized solar cell application. In this elaborate structure, Au nanoparticles welding on nanotube walls play dual roles of direct injecting hot electrons into TiO2 to elevate the conductivity of TiO2 film by about 4 times (under illumination) for fast electron transport, and introducing a plasmonic effect to improve light-harvesting as well. Meanwhile, the thick TiO2 nanoparticulate decoration provides the photoanode vast surface area for ~3.2 times the dye-loading amount of the pristine TiO2 nanotube array based electrode, which will further boost the light-harvesting remarkably. The resulting dye-sensitized solar cell yields an impressively high power conversion efficiency of 8.93%, which is 190.4% that of the pristine TiO2 nanotube array based device. The technology presented in this work provides also a promising prospect for the preparation of multi-hierarchical structures for a wide range of applications, such as photocatalysis and gas sensors.
