Abstract:We report a novel micro-fiber Bragg grating (mu FBG) sensor that takes advantage of the degeneracy of stop-band and rapid emergence of spectral modes when an effective phase shift occurs. The phase shift can be enabled by a range of perturbations in a central segment of the grating, including monolayer immobilization of bio-molecules or change in refractive index in the surrounding, thereby constituting the possibility of a highly sensitive sensor with the merit of scalable performance. The use of mu FBG ensures strong evanescent field coupling to the surrounding in order to maximize signal transduction. Simulation results indicate very favorable sensor signal characteristics such as large wavelength shift and sharp reflection dips. A general relation between the peak position within the stop-band and the amount of effective phase shift is also provided, and may generally serve as helpful guideline for FBG sensor design. A typical mu FBG sensor device may detect surface protein/DNA adsorption with limit-of-detection (LOD) as low as 3.3 pg.mm(-2) for surface mass density and 51.8 fg for total mass. Abstract:We present a simple optical chemsensor device based on tilted Bragg grating structures ultraviolet-inscribed in conventional multimode fiber and sensitized by a hydrofluoric (HF)-etching treatment. The transition behaviors of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) from normal to tilted structures and their spectral evolution under HF-etching have been studied. The etched devices have been used to measure the concentrations of sugar solution, showing a potential capability of detecting concentration changes as small as <0.5%, which is an order of magnitude lower than that of previously reported FBG sensors in single-mode fiber.

Abstract:High-sensitivity optical chemsensors have been implemented by exploiting fibre Bragg grating structures UV-inscribed in D-shape, single-mode and multimode fibres and post-sensitized by hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching treatment. We have demonstrated that the Bragg grating structures which are intrinsically insensitive to chemicals can be sensitized by effective etching. All etched devices possess refractive index sensing capability that offers an encoding function to chemical concentrations. Most etched devices have been used to measure the concentrations of sugar solutions, showing a potential capability of detecting concentration changes as small as 0.1–0.5%.

Abstract:A novel implementation of an optical chemsensor device is reported based on long-period fiber grating structures ultraviolet-inscribed in D-fiber, with sensitivity enhancement by cladding etching. The results of a comparative study using D-fiber devices and similar structures in standard optical fiber reveal that the D-fiber devices offer substantially greater sensitivity both with and without etching. Based on a calibrated response to changes in refractive index, the grating devices have been used to measure the concentrations of aqueous sugar solutions, demonstrating the potential capability to detect concentration changes as small as 0.2%.

The surrounding-medium refractive index sensitivity of the devices has been enhanced significantly by a hydrofluoric acid etching process. Abstract:Point-probe optical fiber chem-sensors have been implemented using cladding etched fiber Bragg gratings. The sensors possess refractive index sensing capability that can be utilized to measure chemical concentrations. The Bragg wavelength shift reaches 8 run when the index of surrounding medium changes from 1.33 to 1.44, giving maximum sensitivity more than 10 times higher than that of previously reported devices. More importantly, the dual-grating configuration of the point-probe sensors offers a temperature reference function, permitting accurate measurement of refractive index encoded chemical concentrations.

Abstract:A novel fiber Bragg grating (FBG) based chemical sensor using hydrogel, a swellable polymer, as sensitive element is demonstrated. The sensing mechanism relies on the shift of Bragg wavelength due to the stress resulted from volume change of sensitive swellable hydrogel responding to the change of external environment. A polyacrylamide hydrogel fiber grating chemical sensor is made, and the experiments on its sensitivity to the salinity are performed. The sensitivity is low due to the less stress from the shrinking or swelling of hydrogels. Reducing the cross diameter of the grating through etching with hydrofluoric acid can greatly improve the sensitivity of the sensor.

Abstract:In this paper, measurement method for the refractive index of chemical substances based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor was proposed. The relation between Bragg wavelength shift and surrounding refractive index (SRI) was analyzed theoretically and experimentally. The SRI sensitivity of the chemical sensor could be enhanced by reducing the cladding thickness of the FBG using hydrofluoric acid (HF) solution etching process. The experimental results indicated that the variation of Bragg wavelength increased as the SRI increased. In the low SRI region, the relationship between the Bragg wavelength shift and the change of the SRI was approximately linear.

Abstract:We combine fiber Bragg grating (FBG) technology with a wet chemical etch-erosion procedure and demonstrate two types of refractive index sensors using single-mode optical fibers. The first index sensor device is an etch-eroded single FBG with a radius of 3μm, which is used to measure the indices of four different liquids. The second index sensor device is an etch-eroded fiber Fabry-Pérot interferometer (FFPI) with a radius of ∼1.5μm and is used to measure the refractive indices of isopropyl alcohol solutions of different concentrations. Due to its narrower resonance spectral feature, the FFPI sensor has a higher sensitivity than the FBG sensor and can detect an index variation of 1.4×10−5. Since we can measure the reflection signal, these two types of sensors can be fabricated at the end of a fiber and used as point sensors.

Abstract:A refractive index sensor based on the thinned and microstructure fiber Bragg grating (ThMs-FBG) was proposed and realized as a chemical sensing. The numerical simulation for the reflectance spectrum of the ThMs-FBG was calculated and the phase shift down-peak could be observed from the reflectance spectrum. Many factors influencing the reflectance spectrum were considered in detail for simulation, including the etched depth, length, and position. The sandwich-solution etching method was utilized to realize the microstructure of the ThMs-FBG, and the photographs of the microstructure were obtained. Experimental results demonstrated that the reflectance spectrum, phase shift down-peak wavelength, and reflected optical intensity of the ThMs-FBG all depended on the surrounding refractive index. However, only the down-peak wavelength of the ThMs-FBG changed with the surrounding temperature. Under the condition that the length and cladding diameter of the ThMs-FBG microstructure were 800 and 14 mum, respectively, and the position of the microstructure of the ThMs-FBG is in the middle of grating region, the refractive index sensitivity of the ThMs-FBG was 0.79 nm/refractive index unit with the wide range of 1.33-1.457 and a high resolution of 1.2 x 10(-3). The temperature sensitivity was 0.0103 nm/ degrees C, which was approximately equal to that of common FBG.

Abstract:Femtosecond lasers,with extremely high peak power and ultra-short pulse duration,are widely applied in fibers,fusedsilica glasses,and other transparent materials.Studies using femtosecond lasers to fabricaed waveguides,grating,microfluidic channel,and other functional devices in these materials have been widely reported.Optical fiber sensor fabricated using a combination of femtosecond laser modification and selective chemical etching have various advantages,such as low volume,light quality,high resistance to electromagnetic interference,and high sensitivity.These sensors are a vital part in various fields of study.Also this method of fabrication using a combination of femtosecond laser modification and selective chemical etching can significantly improve the machining efficiency and precision.In this study,we introduce a new method by using the combination of femtosecond laser modification and selective chemical etching for fabrication of fibers with micro-nano structures.Based on the working principle of the sensor,the sensor can be classified into interference-mode,diffraction-mode,and mixed-mode sensors.In addition,the interferencemode sensor mainly includes Fabry-Perot (FP) and Mach-Zehnder (MZ) interference.Compared to conventional method,this method modulates the fiber core refractive index,causes the light field to come in direct contact with the test liquid,and greatly improves the sensitivity of the sensor.The diffraction mode consists of optical fiber Bragg grating (FBG) as well as micro channels and long period fiber grating (LPFG).As compared to other methods used to improve the sensitivity of the FBG and LPFG,this method can effectively maintain the mechanics performance of the material.The mixed mode included the system with lab-in-fibers.This method can integrate different types of functional components to meet the requirements,and simultaneously measure two or more important parameters.Because of this method there are more controllable parameters such as laser power,scanning speed,the corrosion time,corrosion liquid concentration,etc.By optimizing the processing parameters,an ideal three-dimensional (3D) structure can be obtained.The researches on this field started later in China;however,some institutions have already have made sufficient progress.With the need of industrial production,the improvement of laser processing technology,and assuming that this method will be persistently improved,many new types of fibers with micro-nano structures will be fabricated with broad application prospect.This article systematically introduced some reviewed structures and their test results.In addition,the advantages and disadvantages of the method are summarized and prospected.
A Fiber Bragg Grating Sensor Based on Cladding Mode Resonance for Label-Free Biosensing

Abstract:A fiber-optic biosensing platform based on ultra-narrowband cladding mode resonances was developed on a high-reflectivity fiber Bragg grating (FBG) for targeting biomolecular detection. The multiple cladding modes with a high sensitivity to the refractive index (RI) were excited in the FBG by coupling between the forward-propagating guided core mode of the multimode fiber and the backward-propagating guided cladding mode of the FBG without any damage to the fiber structure or any change to the standard FBG manufacturing process. The full width at half maximum and the Q-factor of the typical cladding mode resonance operation of the proposed sensor are 80 pm and 19,270, respectively, which are better than those of most fiber-optic biosensors reported to date. In addition, the FBG sensor demonstrated a high sensitivity in protein detection and a high selectivity in serum sample assays. The sensitivity of this sensor was further increased simply by coating it with graphene oxide (GO) sheets on the sensing surface without using a signal amplification strategy. Furthermore, an ultra-low limit of detection (LOD) of 32 pM was obtained by the GO-coated FBG sensor for IgG detection. The proposed FBG sensor provides a competitive fiber-optic platform for biomolecular detection. It has a great potential for applications in label-free biosensing.

Abstract:We report a method to detect chiral enantiomers via an optical thin-film coated long-period ﬁbre grating sensor. To simulate such circularly layered structure containing magneto-electric coupling enantiomers, the theory for wave propagation in lossy thin-film coated fibres expanded by separating cladding modes into left and right circular polarization. The applicable conditions and solving process of complex effective refractive indices for the cladding modes are discussed. The behaviours of the complex refractive index of the lossy sensing film, optical activity and refractive index of enantiomers, mode and period of the grating on sensing characteristics of the sensor are theoretically clarified. By simultaneously observing variations of dual resonance wavelengths and minimum transmissions of the sensor, the refractive index-induced and chirality-induced changes can be distinguished. This work may provide sufficient guidelines to explore the design and application of long-period ﬁbre grating chirality sensors in industrial, environmental, and biochemical sensing.
Femtosecond-Pulsed Laser Written and Etched Fiber Bragg Gratings for Fiber-Optical Biosensing

Abstract:We present the development of a label-free, highly sensitive fiber-optical biosensor for online detection and quantification of biomolecules. Here, the advantages of etched fiber Bragg gratings (eFBG) were used, since they induce a narrowband Bragg wavelength peak in the reflection operation mode. The gratings were fabricated point-by-point via a nonlinear absorption process of a highly focused femtosecond-pulsed laser, without the need of prior coating removal or specific fiber doping. The sensitivity of the Bragg wavelength peak to the surrounding refractive index (SRI), as needed for biochemical sensing, was realized by fiber cladding removal using hydrofluoric acid etching. For evaluation of biosensing capabilities, eFBG fibers were biofunctionalized with a single-stranded DNA aptamer specific for binding the C-reactive protein (CRP). Thus, the CRP-sensitive eFBG fiber-optical biosensor showed a very low limit of detection of 0.82 pg/L, with a dynamic range of CRP detection from approximately 0.8 pg/L to 1.2 μg/L. The biosensor showed a high specificity to CRP even in the presence of interfering substances. These results suggest that the proposed biosensor is capable for quantification of CRP from trace amounts of clinical samples. In addition, the adaption of this eFBG fiber-optical biosensor for detection of other relevant analytes can be easily realized.

Abstract:Based on a special catalyst and fiber Bragg gratings(FBGs),an optical sensing system is proposed to measure the concentration of CH4.The temperature around the catalyst rises rapidly as the CH4 concentration increases,which can be detected by an FBG-type sensor through monitoring the wavelength shift of the reflection spectrum.By employing a well-matched FBG as a reference,the wavelength shift of the sensing FBG can be transformed effectively into the variation in the measured optical intensity.An experiment is demonstrated to show the good performances of our system,such as the high resolution and good stability to the environmental temperature.
