Abstract:Previous Experiments reported that precious-metal Pt is able to migrate between perovskite CaTiO3 surface and bulk with change of the external redox conditions. This novel process can efficiently suppress the agglomeration of preciousmetal particles,and maintain the high performance of the so-called "intelligent catalysts"for a long period. However,the study of the interactions between precious-metal and CaTiO3 substrate is rather limited. The first-principles calculations combined with cluster expansion and Monte Carlo methods were employed to construct the Pt Ox-CaO-Ti Oxpseudo-ternary phase diagrams to explore the properties of Pt-doped CaTiO3 system. The first-principles phase diagrams show that Pt can be doped in CaTiO3 and occupy the Ti-site at various concentrations,and the thermodynamic phase diagrams indicate that the doped CaTi1-xPtxO3 structures evolve to solid solutions at ambient temperatures. More importantly,Pt tends to dissolve into CaTiO3 substrate under oxidizing conditions while precipitating from the perovskite matrix and exist as metallic particles under reducing conditions,which is consistent with the concept of"intelligent catalyst". Furthermore,the investigations of the phase diagram indicate the existence of some other oxides and metal alloys in the catalyst system at various conditions. The results might inform the experiments and be helpful for preparing highly efficient catalysts for elimination of harmful exhaust gas.

Abstract:Pseudoternary phase diagrams of the PtOx-CaO-TiOx system were constructed using first-principles theoretical methods to interpret experimental observations of phase formation and evolution in Pt-doped CaTiO3 made by aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy. In this system, promoted as a self-regenerative automotive exhaust-gas catalyst, Pt precipitates as metallic particles from the doped perovskite under reducing conditions and tends to redissolve under oxidizing conditions. Due to the likely influence of kinetic limitations on experimental observations, we focus on a restricted (metastable) phase diagram in which single and other unobserved oxides of Pt are intentionally excluded. Various titanate phases appear, however, and their presence helps inform the calculation of the phase diagrams, which in turn confirm that the self-regenerative effect is a consequence of thermodynamic phase stability under the specific redox environments examined.

Abstract:Precise catalysis is critical for the high-quality catalysis industry. However, it remains challenging to fundamentally understand precise catalysis at the atomic orbital level. Herein, we propose a new strategy to unravel the role of specific d orbitals in catalysis. The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyzed by atomically dispersed Pt/Co-doped Ti1-xO2 nanosheets (Pt-1/Co-1-Ti1-xO2) is used as a model catalysis. The z-axis d orbitals of Pt/Co-Ti realms dominate the O-2 adsorption, thus triggering ORR. In light of orbital-resolved analysis, Pt-1/Co-1-Ti1-xO2 is experimentally fabricated, and the excellent ORR catalytic performance is further demonstrated. Further analysis reveals that the superior ORR performance of Pt-1-Ti1-xO2 to Co-1-Ti1-xO2 is ascribed to stronger activation of Ti by Pt than Co via the d-d hybridization. Overall, this work provides a useful tool to understand the underlying catalytic mechanisms at the atomic orbital level and opens new opportunities for precise catalyst design. [GRAPHICS] .

Abstract:Understanding the influence of structural configurations on catalytic performance is crucial for optimizing atom‐efficient single‐atom catalysts (SACs). In this study, we conducted a density functional theory (DFT) investigation of single Pt atoms positioned at step‐edges and within a solid solution on the CeO2(111) surface. We compared these configurations in terms of thermodynamic stability, electronic properties, and further potential energy surfaces for CO oxidation. Stability studies revealed that the solid solution catalyst exhibits greater stability compared to the step‐edge catalyst. Additionally, the Pt in the solid solution catalyst can effectively activate lattice oxygen atoms, making the catalyst more conducive to the formation of oxygen vacancies. The CO oxidation process was analyzed using the Mars‐van Krevelen mechanism, revealing that the solid solution catalyst possesses a more moderate CO adsorption energy. This, coupled with its lower oxygen vacancy formation energy, leads to reduced energy barriers throughout the CO oxidation cycle. Our findings highlight the strong dependence of catalytic activity on the specific configuration of Pt atoms within the CeO2 matrix, with the solid solution model demonstrating superior catalytic efficiency compared to the step‐edge‐supported Pt catalysts.

Abstract:CuO layers coated with single noble metal atoms has been used in CO oxidation, but understanding of its mechanism is still ambiguous. A series of first-principles calculations were performed in this study to investigate the properties of a single Pt atom and triple Pt (Pt3) atoms supported on a CuO(1 1 0) layer on a Cu(1 1 0) substrate and their role in CO oxidation reactions. Calculations on the adsorption energies of O2 and CO2 as well as the subsequent energy evolution revealed that the Pt3 atoms were more active than the single Pt atom in CO oxidation. The catlyts surface with Pt3 atoms was reconstructed by CO oxidation, while no reconstruction phenomenon was found on the surface with the single Pt atom. Further, tensile properties along the [1 1 0] and [0 0 1] directions elucidated that the weak bonding between the Pt3 atoms and the substrate could result in the surface reconstruction.

Abstract:Unraveling the role of surface oxygen sites in transition metal oxides during catalytic reactions has always been the focus of environmental and energy chemistry research. Herein, active surface oxygen sites of cubic perovskite cobalt oxide were engineered to comprehend their crucial role and catalytic mechanism at the molecular level. By removing those inert Sr/ La-O termination layers, active oxygen sites were exposed on the Co terminated surface of Sr0.6La0.4CoO3-delta that furnished the dominant catalytic process of CO oxidation via the Mars-van Krevelen (MvK) mechanism. The fabrication of five-coordinate cobalt ions and the enhanced covalency of Co-O bonds not only optimize the surface electronic structure of Co 3d-O 2p, but also supply active surface oxygen sites, which effectively oxidizes CO to CO2 with a significantly improved oxidation performance and stability as evidenced by soft/hard XAS, XPS, and O2-TPD. Furthermore, online isotopic 18O2 mass spectrometry, in situ DRIFTS, and theoretical simulation demonstrate that the activity of surface oxygen sites enhances the kinetics of the MvK reaction, while unsaturated coordination sites from five-coordinate cobalt ions primarily contribute to the activated oxygen molecules and the stable catalytic cycle. The results reported here provide a deep insight into the comprehension of the relationships among active oxygen sites, surface electronic structure, and the reaction mechanism of transition metal oxides necessary for catalytic oxidation reactions.

Abstract:Understanding the catalytic properties of metal/metal oxide interfaces is gaining importance in heterogeneous catalysis. Density functional theory calculations were employed to understand the mechanism of CO oxidation on TM/SrTiO3 catalysts (TM/STO, TM = Au, Ag, Pd, Pt, Rh, and Ir). Au benefits from O2 dissociation at the Au/STO interface with lower barrier than on corresponding closed-packed Au surface. Doping of STO with fluorine lowers the activation barriers for O2 dissociation. Brønsted-Evans-Polanyi relations are identified for O2 dissociation and a density of states analysis provides insight into the activation of O2 at TM/STO interfaces. Full catalytic cycles for CO oxidation are formulated including O2 dissociative and associative mechanisms. Microkinetics simulations show that an O2 associative mechanism at Au/STO and Ag/STO interfaces is dominant for CO oxidation. For a more reactive metal like Pd, CO2 formation involving interface sites present higher barriers than on the metal itself because of too strong binding of O at the Pd/STO interface. Pt/STO and Rh/STO also follow such a conventional Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism, while Ir is too reactive leading to a shift of the reaction at the Ir/STO interface involving dissociated O2. The mechanistic insights are discussed with respect to recent experimental literature on Pd/STO and Au/STO for which different structure-performance relationships were formulated. We predict that F-doping of STO can further improve the catalytic performance of TM/STO catalysts for CO oxidation.

Theoretical Investigations of Pt-1@Ceo2 Single-Atom Catalyst for Co Oxidation

Abstract:In the present study, we perform systematic density functional investigations on the single-atom Pt catalysts dispersed on CeO2 (111), (110), and (100) surfaces. The structural and electronic properties of these SACs and their corresponding catalytic activity for CO oxidation are discussed. It is shown that the single-atom Pt substitution of a lattice Ce ion is thermodynamically stable on each ceria surface. On the (111) and (100) surfaces, the single Pt atom is found to exist at an oxidation state of +4 upon replacement of Ce4+, while, on the (110) surface, it exhibits a planar structure with a reduced oxidation state of +2 due to the spontaneous formation of surface peroxide O(2)(2-)species. On all of the surfaces, CO oxidation is found to follow the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism. It is the single-atom Pt, rather than the lattice Ce, that acts as the electron acceptor/donor in the redox processes during the whole catalytic cycle. This work provides insights on the significant role of a single metal atom on reducible oxide of ceria and others.
Structure evolution of Pt–3d transition metal alloys under reductive and oxidizing conditions and effect on the CO oxidation: a first-principles study

Abstract:Structural evolution and chemical state of alloy catalysts under reaction conditions is crucial to the activity, selectivity and stability of the catalytic reactions. To provide fundamental insight, we present here a density functional theory study of the structural change of Pt–3d transition metal (TM, including Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) alloys with (111) orientation under the reductive and oxidizing conditions as well as its effect on the CO oxidation. We find that under the reductive conditions (vacuum and CO), 3d TM prefers to occupy in the subsurface layer due to its higher surface energy and smaller atomic size. While under the oxidizing conditions, the strong O–3d TMs interaction would induce 3d TM segregation to the surface, migrating further in the surface layer to form oxidized 3d TM islands. We find that Pt (111) with the atomic dispersed 3d TM in surface layers is highly active for CO oxidation via bi-functional mechanism. The interplay between structure and reaction environment as well as effect on the catalytic activity is highlighted.

Abstract:Anatase TiO2 plays an important role in catalytic reaction. The present work focused on surface structural and electric structural properties of the anatase TiO2 doped with some 3d transition metals (Mn, Fe and Co). Taking the CO oxidation as a probe reaction, attempts to explain the influence of oxygen vacancies and surface OH groups on the reaction mechanism by using FT-IR characterization and DFT calculation. It is found that doping can activate the surface lattice oxygen by introducing spin polarization, thereby increasing the oxygen vacancy to adsorb more chemisorbed oxygen. It is also found that OH groups increase the catalytic performance by forming bicarbonate which is eventually consumed. At low temperature, the CO oxidation reaction by surface reactive oxygen species and hydroxyl groups together. At high temperature, CO molecules are oxidized by surface reactive oxygen species with CO2 desorption step as the controlling step. Finally, the reaction mechanism was summarized as a Eley-Rideal mechanism.

Abstract:Anionic redox chemistry is becoming increasingly important in explaining the intristic catalytic behavior in transition-metal oxides and improving catalytic activity. However, it is a great challenge to activate lattice oxygen in noble-metal-free perovskites for obtaining active peroxide species. Here, we take La0.4Sr0.6CoO3-δ as a model catalyst and develop an anionic redox activity regulation method to activate lattice oxygen by tuning charge transfer between Co4+ and O2-. Advanced XAS and XPS demonstrate that our method can effectively decrease electron density of surface oxygen sites (O2-) to form more reactive oxygen species (O2- x), which reduces the activation energy barriers of molecular O2 and leads to a very high CO catalytic activity. The revealing of the activation mechanism for surface oxygen sites in perovskites in this work opens up a new avenue to design efficient solid catalysts. Furthermore, we also establish a correlation between anionic redox chemistry and CO catalytic activity.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a prototype, water-splitting (photo)catalyst, but its performance is limited by the large overpotential for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). We report here a first-principles density functional theory study of the chemical dynamics of the first proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET), which is considered responsible for the large OER overpotential on TiO2. We use a periodic model of the TiO2/water interface that includes a slab of anatase TiO2 and explicit water molecules, sample the solvent configurations by first principles molecular dynamics, and determine the energy profiles of the two electronic states involved in the electron transfer (ET) by hybrid functional calculations. Our results suggest that the first PCET is sequential, with the ET following the proton transfer. The ET occurs via an inner sphere process, which is facilitated by a state in which one electronic hole is shared by the two oxygen ions involved in the transfer.

Abstract:Although alloying Pt with Ti is a feasible routine to improve oxygen reduction activity and stability, the atomic configuration of surface alloys on PtTi is still lacking deep understanding. Herein, the effect of Ti concentrations ( x ) in sublayer on ORR activity of PtTi surface alloys (Pt@Pt 1- x Ti x @) with FCC or HCP Ti substrate, are systematically studied by first-principles calculations. The accurate atomic structural descriptor based on cluster expansion method is proposed to describe local atomic environment effect on intermediate (OH/OOH) adsorption ability. Different from b = 3.20 eV in traditional linear scaling relationship Δ G OOH = Δ G OH + b , the b values vary from 3.15 to 3.53 eV on PtTi surface alloys. Among surfaces alloys with different Ti concentrations, FCC- and HCP-Pt@Pt 1- x Ti x (Pt)@ displayed the highest stability and catalytic activity at x = 3/9, and possessed a threefold and fivefold times of catalytic activity with a benchmark Pt(111) according to the calculated exchange current rate constants. Importantly, the FCC-Pt@Pt 1- x Ti x (Pt)@ could be promising ORR catalyst as its high ORR activity at larger range of Ti concentration ( x = 1/9–3/9), strong stability, and low Pt usage.

Deep Insight into the Mechanism of Catalytic Combustion of CO and CH 4 over SrTi 1– x B x O 3 (B = Co, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Cu) Perovskite via Flame Spray Pyrolysis

Abstract:Perovskites have been recognized as affordable substitutes for noble-metal catalysts for their tunable catalytic activity and thermal stability. Nevertheless, the highly demanding synthesis procedure still hinders the application of perovskites in catalytic combustion. In this work, a series of nanostructured SiTiO3 perovskites with B-site partial substitution by Co, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Cu are synthesized via flame spray pyrolysis in one step. The comprehensive characterizations on textural properties of nanostructured perovskites reveal that the flame-made perovskite nanoparticles all exhibit high crystal purity and large specific surface area (∼40 m2/g). Furthermore, the highest catalytic activity is achieved by SrTi0.5Co0.5O3 due to the formation of favorable oxygen vacancies, outstanding reducibility, and oxygen desorption capability. Additionally, the presence of 10 vol % water vapor during long-term testing indicates remarkable durability and water resistance. Finally, the CO oxidation and CH4 dehydrogenation on SrTiO3 incorporating Co atoms are more thermodynamically and kinetically favorable than those on other doped surfaces.

Abstract:The O2 dissociative adsorption serves as a pivotal criterion for assessing the efficacy of oxygen reduction catalysts. We conducted a systematic investigation into O2 dissociative adsorption on the Pt-skin Pt3Cu(111) surface by means of the density functional theory (DFT). The computational findings reveal that the O2 adsorption on Pt-skin Pt3Cu(111) surface exhibits comparatively lower stability when contrasted with that on the Pt(111) surface. For O2 dissociation, two paths have been identified. One progresses from the t-f-b state towards the generation of two oxygen atoms situated within nearest-neighbour hcp sites. The other commences from the t-b-t state, leading to the generation of two oxygen atoms occupying nearest-neighbour fcc sites. Moreover, the analysis of the energy barrier associated with O2 dissociation indicates that O2 on the Pt-skin Pt3Cu(111) surface is more difficult to dissociate than on the Pt(111) surface. This study can offer a valuable guide for the practical application of high-performance oxygen reduction catalysts.

Abstract:Developing highly active oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts is of great significance for energy storage and conversion. In this study, we systematically investigated the effect of transition metal and nitrogen co-doped carbon (TM-N-C) as active support on ORR of Pt by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. All Pt with TM-N-C supports (Pt/TM-SACs) exhibited enhanced ORR activity than Pt supported on carbon (Pt/C). The superior ORR activity is attributed to the TM-N x structure, which can regulate the electronic structure of Pt. Moreover, the coordinated N is significantly correlated with the interaction between Pt and TM-N-C support. These findings provide insights for further exploration of ORR catalysts with active support.

Abstract:In heterogeneous catalysis, it is widely believed that the surface states of catalyst supports can strongly influence the catalytic performance, because active components are generally anchored on supports. This paper describes a detailed understanding of the influence of surface defects of TiO2 supports on the catalytic properties of Pt catalysts. Pt was deposited on reduced (r-), hydroxylated (h-), and oxidized (o-) TiO2 surfaces, respectively, and the different surface states of TiO2 not only lead to differences in metal dispersion, but also distinct electronic interactions between the metal and the support. The highest reactivity for catalytic CO oxidation can be achieved over the Pt catalyst supported on reduced TiO2 with surface oxygen vacancies. The turnover frequency (TOF) of this catalyst is determined to be ∼11 times higher than that of Pt supported on oxidized TiO2. More importantly, the reactivity is seen to increase in the sequence of Pt/o-TiO2 < Pt/h-TiO2 < Pt/r-TiO2, which is well consistent with the trend of the calculated Bader charge of Pt.

Abstract:Supported Pt/CeO2 catalysts have been widely used in carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation, however, the high oxygen vacancy formation energy (Evac) in the process leads to the poor performance of these catalysts. Herein, we explored different elements (Pr, Cu, or N) doped CeO2 supports using Ce-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as precursors via calcination treatment. The obtained CeO2 supports were used to load Pt nanoparticles. These catalysts were systematically characterized by various techniques, and they showed superior catalytic activity for CO oxidation compared to undoped catalysts which could be attributed to the formation of Ce3+, and high amounts of Oads/(Oads+Olat) and Ptδ+/Pttotal. Moreover, density functional theory calculations with on-site Coulomb interactions correction (DFT + U) were performed to provide atomic-scale insights into the reaction process by the Mars-van Krevelen (M-vK) mechanism, which revealed that the element-doped catalysts could simultaneously reduce the adsorption energies of CO and lower reaction energy barriers in the *OOCO associative pathway.
