Abstract:We present a novel approach for hierarchical fabrication of high-performance, all-solid-state, flexible supercapacitors from environmentally friendly all-carbon materials. Three-dimensional carbon nanotube/carbon cloth network (CNT/CC) is used as a conductive, flexible and free-standing scaffold for the electro-deposition of highly N/O co-doped graphene quantum dots to form the high-activity, all-carbon electrodes. The hierarchical structure of the CNT/CC network with high electrical conductivity and high surface area provides improved conductive pathways for the efficient activation of GQDs with high pseudocapacitance and electrical double layer capacitance. The obtained N-O-GQD/CNT/CC electrodes for all-solid-state flexible supercapacitors exhibit an ultrahigh areal capacitance of up to 461 mF cm (2) at a current density of 0.5 mA cm (2), while keeping high rate and cyclic performances. This work highlights the great potential of highly active GQDs in the construction of high-performance flexible energy-storage devices.(C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Sprinkling MnFe2O4 Quantum Dots on Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Sheets: the Formation Mechanism and Application for High-Performance Supercapacitor Electrodes

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs)/graphene composites are interesting as promising electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors because they can well integrate the complementary features of QDs and graphene. Herein, we demonstrate a MnFe2O4 QDs/nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) material prepared by a controllable solvothermal synthesis, in which ultra-small MnFe2O4 QDs are uniformly anchored on NG surfaces. First-principles calculations elucidate that the oxygen-containing groups of graphene oxide play a crucial role in generating such a structure, and a ferrite octahedral skeleton is firstly formed followed by Mn atom insertion. Powdery MnFe2O4 QDs/NG exhibits a high specific capacitance of 517 F g(-2) within a negative potential window (-1 approximate to 0 V) in KOH electrolyte. When the lower cut off voltage is extended to -1.2 V, the specific capacitance can be increased to 905 F g(-1). And the condensed MnFe2O4 QDs@NG electrode (forming a similar structure to pitaya slices) with an astonishing loading mass of 18 mg cm(-2) can achieve high areal and volumetric capacitances (5.3 F cm(-2) and 277.6 F cm(-3)). Moreover, carbon encapsulation is favorable for the improvement of rate and cycling performance, allowing a satisfactory capacitance of 150 F g(-1) even at 200 A g(-1) as well as a superior lifetime up to 65000 cycles. These results make such materials competitive with supercapacitor electrodes and may speed up the development of QD-based electrodes for energy storage applications.
Hierarchical 3D All-Carbon Composite Structure Modified with N-Doped Graphene Quantum Dots for High-Performance Flexible Supercapacitors

Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors have shown enormous potential for portable electronic devices. Herein, hierarchical 3D all-carbon electrode materials are prepared by assembling N-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) on carbonized MOF materials (cZIF-8) interweaved with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for flexible all-solid-state supercapacitors. In this ternary electrode, cZIF-8 provides a large accessible surface area, CNTs act as the electrical conductive network, and N-GQDs serve as highly pseudocapactive materials. Due to the synergistic effect and hierarchical assembly of these components, N-GQD@cZIF-8/CNT electrodes exhibit a high specific capacitance of 540 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1) in a 1 m H2SO4 electrolyte and excellent cycle stability with 90.9% capacity retention over 8000 cycles. The assembled supercapacitor possesses an energy density of 18.75 Wh kg(-1) with a power density of 108.7 W kg(-1). Meanwhile, three supercapacitors connected in series can power light-emitting diodes for 20 min. All-solid-state N-GQD@cZIF-8/CNT flexible supercapacitor exhibits an energy density of 14 Wh kg(-1) with a power density of 89.3 W kg(-1), while the capacitance retention after 5000 cycles reaches 82%. This work provides an effective way to construct novel electrode materials with high energy storage density as well as good cycling performance and power density for high-performance energy storage devices via the rational design.

Abstract:The applications of carbon-based micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) based on the electrical double layer capacitance mechanism are usually limited by the extremely low specific capacitances and energy storage densities of carbon electrodes fabricated from less active, large-size carbon materials. As a promising alternative, high-activity N and O co-doped graphene quantum dots (N-O-GQDs) offer a combination of advantages, such as ultrasmall sizes, rich active sites, high hydrophilicity, and facile assembly into conductive carbon films. Here we report the facile electrophoresis construction of carbonbased MSCs for ultrahigh energy density storage using N-O-GQDs as the initial electrode material. The N-O-GQD MSCs show extremely high volumetric capacitances of 325 F cm(-3) in H2SO4 due to their high pseudocapacitive activity, high loading density, and enhanced electrolyte wettingability ascribed to a large amount of doped nitrogen and oxygen functional groups. They deliver an ultrahigh volumetric energy density, superior to that of thin-film lithium batteries. Three connected all-solid-state N-O-GQD MSCs can light a red light-emitting diode. Furthermore, the pseudocapacitive MSCs maintain high power densities, and cycling stability owing to improvements in electrical conductivity and electrolyte penetration. The important results highlight the promising applications of high-activity nanographenes in on-chip power sources for driving diverse micro-devices. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped carbon is a major class of high-performance electrode materials for the electrochemical supercapacitor. Herein, nitrogen-doped carbon was obtained by pyrolysis to graphene-grafted polyimide precursors on carbon cloth through in situ polymerization. The morphology, structure, and electrochemical properties of flexible electrodes were investigated in detail. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed the preparation of nitrogen-doped carbon on carbon cloth. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization showed the doping of the N heteroatom. Flexible electrodes obtained with the optimized mass graphene delivered high specific capacitance of 669 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 and good cycle stability, with retention of 122.3% capacitance after 6000 cycles in a three-electrode system. These typical flexible electrodes show great potential in wearable energy storage devices.

Abstract:A method which combining self -assembly and source reduction has been used for the preparation of self supporting fold N -doped graphene films.Characterization methods such as field emission scanning electron microscope,X ray powder dif-fraction and photoelectron spectrometer have been used to characterize the preparation of the flexible films.Electrochemical per-formance tests show that the prepared N -doped graphene thin films have good properties of ultra -capacitance.At the current density of 1 A/g,its specific capacity is 210 F/g.When the current density is increased by 10 times,it still have 71.0%of the initial capacity.In 5 A /g current density of 1 000 cycles,specific capacity value is 95.3%of the original.

Abstract:Tailoring the composition of graphene used as electrodes for microsupercapacitors is an effective solution to increase the areal energy density of the devices for greater advancement towards miniaturized electronic applications. Herein, we demonstrate a simple method to prepare the nitrogen/oxygen-doped graphene ink for the scalable 3D printed all-solid-state flexible microsupercapacitors. The devices show promising electrochemical performance with high areal energy density of 2.59 μWh cm−2 and power density of 0.23 mW cm−2, good cycling stability, and excellent mechanical flexibility. The method developed here offers a new avenue for the development of high-performance, all-solid-state flexible microsupercapacitors in a straightforward and scalable process.

Abstract:We demonstrate a facile strategy to fabricate flexible paper-based supercapacitors, in which all the components are integrated onto a paper with poly (vinyl alcohol)/H3PO4 as the gel electrolyte. The electrodes are drawn on both sides of the paper in a mirror image with a surfactant-free ink of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes and graphene. The resultant supercapacitors present a high volumetric capacitance of 0.45 F cm−3 and an energy density of 40.0 μWh cm−3. Moreover, this strategy is intrinsically scalable toward flexible energy devices while maintaining their electrochemical and mechanical performance.

Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors using graphene have been intensively investigated due to their potential applications for wearable and smart devices. In order to avoid stacking between graphene layers, spacers such as carbon fibers and metal oxide particles are often introduced. Such composites enhance effectively the specific surface area of the electrodes and eventually supercapacitor performance. In present work, the graphene/g-C3N4 composite is fabricated and further employed as the supercapacitor electrode. The atomic interaction between C and N of g-C3N4 and O of graphene oxide during the post-reduction in graphene oxide is found to affect device performance. The devices fabricated using the graphene/g-C3N4 composite electrode exhibit a specific area capacitance of 1500 mF cm−2, and 95% of initial capacitance after 5000 cycles and a maximum energy density of 0.075 mWh cm−2. These all-solid-state flexible supercapacitors are thus promising for miniaturized electronics.

Abstract:Thermal nitridation of reduced graphene oxide sheets yields highly conductive (∼1000-3000 S m(-1)) N-doped graphene sheets, as a result of the restoration of the graphene network by the formation of C-N bonded groups and N-doping. Even without carbon additives, supercapacitors made of the N-doped graphene electrodes can deliver remarkable energy and power when operated at higher voltages, in the range of 0-4 V.

Abstract:Heteroatom-doped graphene is of great interest for energy storage applications due to its improved local electronic structures compared with undoped graphene. However, a tunable method for the preparation of heteroatom-doped graphene with a special microstructure is still worth developing. Herein, a novel nitrogen-doped graphene with different microstructures is facilely synthesized via an in situ interlamination self-assembling method that employs the in situ formed Fe3(PO4)2 and organoamine as the catalyst and carbon source, respectively. By tuning the alkyl chain length in organoamine, octylamine and dodecylamine, bubble-like and sheet-like nitrogen-doped graphene are obtained, respectively. In three-electrode supercapacitor tests, besides the double-layer capacitance, the as-prepared graphene electrode material indeed exhibits pseudocapacitance due to the N-rich feature, delivering a good rate capability (166 F g–1 at 20 A g–1) and cyclic performance (96% capacitance retention over 20,000 cycles at 20 A g–1). More importantly, the symmetrical supercapacitor studies reveal the promising practicality due to the achieved excellent energy and power densities together with long-term cyclability. Thereby, this work establishes a new milestone for the facile synthesis of heteroatom-doped graphene with a desired microstructure for energy storage and other applications.

Abstract:Flexible solid-state supercapacitors provide a promising energy-storage alternative for the rapidly growing flexible and wearable electronic industry. Further improving device energy density and developing a cheap flexible current collector are two major challenges in pushing the technology forward. In this work, we synthesize a nitrogen-doped graphene/MnO2 nanosheet (NGMn) composite by a simple hydrothermal method. Nitrogen-doped graphene acts as a template to induce the growth,of layered delta-MnO2 and improves the electronic conductivity of the composite. The NGMn composite exhibits a large specific capacitance of about 305 F g(-1) at a scan rate of 5 mV s(-1). We also create a cheap and highly conductive flexible current collector using Scotch, tape. Flexible solid-state asymmetric supercapacitors are fabricated with NGMn cathode, activated carbon anode, and PVA-LiCl gel electrolyte. The device can achieve a high operation voltage of 1.8 V and exhibits a maximum energy density of 3.5 mWh cm(-3) at a power density of 0.019 W cm(-3). Moreover, it retains >90% of its initial capacitance after 1500 cycles. Because of its flexibility, high energy density, and good cycle life, NGMn-based flexible solid state asymmetric supercapacitors have great potential for application in next-generation portable and wearable electronics.

Abstract:Miniaturization of supercapacitor offers an attractive route to the fabrication of portable and wearable electronic devices, but still suffer from limited areal capacitance. Herein, we utilize a facile stamping approach to fabricate flexible paper-based micro-supercapacitors with the ternary composite containing polyaniline (PANI) as patterned interdigital electrode materials. The ternary composites are composed of PANI, metal-organic frameworks derived porous carbon (C800) and low-oxidized graphene (LGE). Benefiting from the synergy of C800 and LGE, the electrical conductivity and capacitance retention of PANI composites were enhanced obviously. The resultant composites displayed high areal capacitance of 162 mF·cm −2 , remarkable energy density of 24.9 μWh·cm −2 , 90 % capacitance over thousands of charge-discharge cycles and the excellent stability against bending even at large angles.

Abstract:Flexible all-solid-state supercapacitors based on graphene fibers are demonstrated in this study. Surface-deposited oxide nanoparticles are used as pseudo-capacitor electrodes to achieve high capacitance. This supercapacitor electrode has an areal capacitance of 42 mF cm(-2), which is comparable to the capacitance for fiber-based supercapacitors reported to date. During the bending and cycling of the fiber-based supercapacitor, the stability could be maintained without sacrificing the electrochemical performance, which provides a novel and simple way to develop flexible, lightweight and efficient graphene-based devices.
Flexible All-Solid-state Micro-Supercapacitor Based on Ni Fiber Electrode Coated with MnO 2 and Reduced Graphene Oxide Via Electrochemical Deposition

Abstract:Flexible and micro-sized energy conversion/ storage components are extremely demanding in portable and multifunctional electronic devices, especially those small, flexible, roll-up and even wearable ones. Here in this paper, a two-step electrochemical deposition method has been developed to coat Ni fibers with reduced graphene oxide and MnO 2 subsequently, giving rise to Ni@reduced-graphene-oxide@MnO 2 sheath-core flexible electrode with a high areal specific capacitance of 119.4 mF cm −2 at a current density of 0.5 mA cm −2 in 1 mol L −1 Na 2 SO 4 electrolyte. Using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)- LiCl as a solid state electrolyte, two Ni@reduced-grapheneoxide@ MnO 2 flexible electrodes were assembled into a freestanding, lightweight, symmetrical fiber-shaped micro-supercapacitor device with a maximum areal capacitance of 26.9 mF cm −2 . A high power density of 0.1W cm −3 could be obtained when the energy density was as high as 0.27 mW h cm −3 . Moreover, the resulting micro-supercapacitor device also demonstrated good flexibility and high cyclic stability. The present work provides a simple, facile and low-cost method for the fabrication of flexible, lightweight and wearable energy conversion/storage micro-devices with a high-performance.
Fabrication and Characterization Analysis of Flexible Porous Nitrogen-Doped Carbon-Based Supercapacitor Electrodes

Abstract:Supercapacitor as a new-type energy storage device has attracted increasing interests,because it can provide substantially higher specific/volumetric energy density compared to conventional capacitors,and higher power density and longer cycling lifetime compared to Li-ion batteries.Therefore,it shows great promise as green energy storage device for back-up energy systems and electronic vehicles.Among all kinds of supercapacitors,flexible solid-state supercapacitor,which consists of flexible electrodes,solid-state electrolyte and separator,has attracted much attention due to its potential abilities in wearable electronics and flexible devices.Numerous efforts have been devoted to fabricate flexible electrodes because the fundamental limit of energy storage capability is largely determined by the electrode material.Therefore,how to fabricate suitable flexible electrodes alerts significant influence on supercapacitors' performance.Compared to pseudocapacitive materials,carbon-based materials have been widely investigated for flexible electrodes due to their good electrical conductivity,excellent cycling stability,high power density and outstanding mechanical properties.In this work,an effective and feasible method to fabricate carbon-based electrode for the fabrication of flexible and high-performance supercapacitors has been proposed.In order to find the relatively suitable electrode,samples under different experimental conditions have been tested and analyzed systematically.Through the simultaneous activation and carbonization process of the biomass-derived natural silk,all of these carbon-based electrodes have a few features,like hierarchical porous,rich N-doped and carbon nanosheet structure.The as-obtained electrodes show favorable capabilities for electrochemical energy storage.The specific/mass capacitor of the best carbon-based electrode can achieve 226 mF/cm2 and 26 F/g,respectively,and the equivalent series resistance of it is only 4 Ω,thus showing satisfactory electrochemical performance.In conclusion,the excellent capacitance performance of the ultralight and flexible nanomaterials makes them promising candidates as electrode materials.Attributed to the good flexibility and ultralight weight,this proposed electrodes can be directly fabricated into flexible solid-state supercapacitor without any binder and conductive agents.
