Abstract:The structure, properties, synthesis of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) were reviewed. Monofunctional, difunctional and multifunctional POSS, which can be easily incorporated into common plastics via copolymerization, grafting, or blending to form truly inorganic/organic hybrid nanostructural composites, were mainly discussed. Abstract:Functionalized PS/SiO2 composite nanoparticles bearing sulfonic groups on the surface were successfully synthesized via emulsion copolymerization using a polymerizable emulsifier a olefin solfonate (AOS). As demonstrated by transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, well-defined core-shell PS/SiO2 composite nanoparticles with a diameter of 50 nm were obtained. Sulfonic groups introduced onto the surface of the composite nanoparticles were quantified by FTIR, and can be controlled to some extent via a two-stage procedure.

Abstract:The organic montmorillonite VC18-MMT was prepared by the exchanging inorganic cations with vinylbenzyldimethyloctadecylammionun chloride (VOAC) which could be co-polymerized with styrene. The predispersion of VC18-MMT was realized via sonicating the suspension of the montmorillonite particles in emulsifier solution, and then the styrene was added into the system and the in situ emulsion polymerization was carried out to prepare PS/VC18-MMT nanocomposites. The structure of final nanocomposites was characterized by XRD and TEM. The results indicated that the most of montmorillonite was fully exfoliated into individual layers and uniformly dispersed in the polystyrene matrix. The dynamic mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were determined by DMA, which demonstrated that the storage modulus and glass transition temperature of polystyrene were increased by compositing of montmorillonite. The polymer grafted on the layers of montmorillonite could be obtained by ion exchanging with lithium cations. The structure and average molecular weight of the polymer were characterized by NMR and GPC. The results showed that the polymer grafted on layers of montmorillonite was identifed as the copolymer of styrene with VOAC and the average molecular weight of the copolymer was lower than that of free polystyrene. One copolymer chain averagely comprised about 25 VOAC molecules, which can be calculated through the concentration of VOAC and the mass of copolymer in the galleries of montmorillonite.

Abstract:A highly ordered vinyl-functionalized MCM-48 material has been synthesized through both co-condensation and post-synthesis grafting methods. The co-condensation method gives samples with larger pore sizes and higher thermal stability than the post-synthesis grafting method. But the sample resulting from post-synthesis grafting is much more ordered. A nanocomposite structure based on vinyl-functionalized MCM-48 and polystyrene (PS) was prepared through in situ polymerization. Characterization by FT-IR, Raman, XRD and N2 adsorption–desorption techniques indicates that inorganic/organic nanocomposites coupled at the nanometer level have been prepared by efficient polymerization of styrene monomers with the intrapore grafted vinyl groups. Bulk composites were produced by addition of the PS/post-synthesis vinyl grafted MCM-48 particles to a PS matrix. The stress–strain measurements demonstrate considerable improvement in Young’s modulus and tensile strength, when compared with the pure PS or with composites derived from PS and precipitated SiO2 or vinyl-functionalized MCM-48 particles without polymer pre-incorporated in the pores.

Abstract:In this paper, a general template synthesis approach is proposed to prepare composite hollow particles using quaternized polystyrene hollow particles. The crosslinked gel hollow templates are robust sufficiently to preserve their spherical contour during template synthesis. The gel shell with positively charged functional groups is infiltrative, and then a diversity of species can be loaded into the gel by electrostatic interaction. The grown materials are homogeneously distributed throughout the whole shell forming composite shells. The generality of the method is proved by extensive growth of the representative materials including metal Au nanoparticles, tungstenic acid and silica. The hollow particles with mesoporous shells are derived by further calcination to remove polymer templates, meanwhile composition of the shell can be transformed for example WC and C from H2WO4/quaternized polystyrene composite.

Abstract:Many additives, e.g., flame retardants and/or appropriate nanoparticles directly incorporated into the base polymer can be employed to protect polymeric materials against attack by fire. Nowadays, novel nanomaterials including polyhedral oligonneric silsesquioxane (POSS) are employed to impart potential flame retardation characteristics to polymers, which open up new ways to prepare flame retarded materials. In this work, octaphenyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (ph-POSS) and its bromide derivative (Br.ph-POSS) were used as novel fillers for polystyrene and the differences in their enhanced combustion properties were investigated and discussed. The microstructures of composites were characterized by TEM, which indicated that POSS nanoparticles were dispersed in the base polymer homogeneously and the amount of fillers were gradually increased with higher amount of POSS. The combustion behaviour of the composites was tested by cone calorimetry, which showed that their flame retardant properties were also greatly improved by increased amounts of POSS fillers. Nevertheless, there are some differences in the combustion properties of the composites which are due to different kinds of POSS nanoparticles, i.e., Br.ph-POSS system was more effective in reducing the peak heat release rate (pHRR) (the largest relative decline in pHRR was 84.2%), while ph-POSS resulted in slower smoke production rate (SPR) and rather bigger drops in peak values of CO release rate (CORR) and CO concentration (COO) during the combustion test (the largest relative decline in peak values of CORR and COC were 81.8% and 84.3%, respectively). These improvements are attributed to the homogenously dispersed POSS nanoparticles and related Br-Sb synergistic effects, while the differences are due to the presence of different substituents and/or elements in dissimilar POSS cages.

Abstract:Polystyrene/Silica Nanocomposites (PS/Si NCs) are attractive material due to their stability (chemical and thermal), low toxicity, the probability from controlling their particle size, ability to be functionalized with a range of molecules and polymers, biocompatibility, degradability below physiographic statuses and low-cost production of materials. In that paper now, The procedure to fabricate polystyrene/silica (PS/SiO2) hybrid hollow spheres did successfully combine by precipitation technique, which was then used to react with silica nanoparticles that were prepared by the sol-gel method to fabricate PS/SiO2 nanocomposite. Four Point Probe, Transition electron microscopy (TEM), and XRD are used to analyze the physical, chemical, optical properties and electric of polystyrene/SiO2 nanocomposites. The experimental effects indicate the possibilities for PS/SiO2 to be used as biomaterials, coating and catalyst materials.

Abstract:We report the use of nanoparticles to stabilise free radical dispersion polymerisations, without the need for any conventional stabiliser, leading to the preparation of polystyrene nanocomposites. The products are well characterised spherical polymer microparticles decorated with nanoparticles on their surfaces. In this paper we demonstrate the process with Fe3O4nanoparticles yielding a product with a strong magnetic property. By using this in situpolymerisation technique, not only can nanoparticles in aqueous solution be harvested, but also this provides a completely new route to polymer composites. Thus, functional nanoparticles can be immobilised onto the surface of the polymer beads to modify significantly their properties.

Abstract:Polylactide (PLA)/poly(ethylene-co-octene)(POE) blends with various contents of nano-SiO2 were prepared via melt mixing. The structure and properties of the PLA/POE/nano-SiO2 ternary composites were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), rheometry, and tensile testing. The particle size of the dispersed POE phase first decreased with increasing nano-SiO2 content and then remained constant. Nano-SiO2 played an important role in the heterogeneous nucleation of PLA, which resulted in an increase of the crystallinity of PLA. The synergistic effect of both POE and nano-SiO2 can significantly improve the toughness, strength, and modulus of PLA. When the ratio of PLA/POE/nano-SiO2 was 90/10/0.5, PLA/POE/nano-SiO2 composite had the best comprehensive properties.

Abstract:Hybrid materials with superior structural and functional properties can be obtained by incorporating nanofillers into polymer matrices. Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanoparticles have attracted much attention recently due to their nanometer size, the ease of which these particles can be incorporated into polymeric materials and the unique capability to reinforce polymers. We review here the state of POSS-containing polymer nanocomposites. We discuss the influence of the incorporation of POSS into polymer matrices via chemical cross-linking or physical blending on the structure of nanocomposites, as affected by surface functional groups, and the POSS concentration.

Abstract:Oleic acid (OA)-modified SiO2 (OA-m-SiO2) nanoparticles were prepared using surface modification method. Infrared spectroscopy ( IR) was used to investigate the structure of the OA-m-SiO2 nanoparticles, and the result showed that OA attached onto the surface of SiO2 nanoparticles through esterification. Effect of OA concentration on the dispersion stability of OA-m-SiO2 in heptane was also studied, and the result indicated that OA-m-SiO2 nanoparticles were dispersed in heptane more stably than the unmodified ones. OA-m-SiO2 nanoparticles can also be dispersed in polypropylene ( PP) matrix in nano-scale. The effect of OA-m-SiO2 on crystallization of PP was studied by means of DSC. It was found that the introduction of OA-m-SiO2 resulted in significant increase in the crystallization temperature, crystallization degree and crystallization rate of PP, and OA-m-SiO2 could effectively induce the formation of b-crystal PP. Effect of OA-m-SiO2 content on mechanical properties of PP/OA-m-SiO2 nanocomposites was also studied. The results show that OA-m-SiO2 can significantly improve the mechanical properties of PP.

Abstract:Communication: CaCO3/polystyrene inorganic/organic composite nanoparticles (50 nm) with a core/shell structure were synthesized in 80% yield by emulsion polymerization. Nanometer CaCO3 was pretreated with gamma -methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane in order to introduce polymerizable groups onto its surface. Soxhlet extraction experiments have shown that only 4% of total encapsulating polystyrene (PS) was removable when the ratio of CaCO3 to styrene was relatively low (14.8-29.6%), indicating strong adhesion between CaCO3 and PS.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel method for preparation of polymer-silica colloidal nanocomposites based on emulsion polymerization and subsequent sol-gel nanocoating process. The polystyrene latex particles bearing basic groups on their surfaces were successfully synthesized through emulsion polymerization using 4-vinylpyridine (4VP) as a functional comonomer and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a surfactant. A series of poly(styrene-co-4-vinylpyridine)/SiO2 nanocomposite particles with smooth or rough core-shell morphology were obtained through the coating process. The poly(styrene-co-4-vinylpyridine) particles could be dissolved subsequently or simultaneously during the sol-gel coating process to form hollow particles. The effects of the amount of 4VP, PVP, NH(4)OH, and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) on both the nanocomposite particles and hollow particles were investigated. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the morphology of the nanocomposite particles and hollow particles was strongly influenced by the initial feed of the comonomer 4VP and the coupling agent PVP. The conditions to obtain all hollow particles were also studied. Thermogravimetric analysis and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses indicated that the interiors of hollow particles were not really "hollow".

Abstract:Epoxy-functionalized polystyrene/silica core-shell composite nanoparticles were prepared by the postaddition of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) via emulsion polymerization. The outermost shell of obtained multilayered core-shell particles was made up of poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA). A semicontinuous process involving the dropwise addition of GMA was used to avoid demulsification of the emulsion system. The amount of grafted PGMA was quantified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and was altered in a wide range (1-50 wt % to styrene). The binding efficiency was usually high (ca. 90%), indicating strong adhesion between the silica core and the polymer shell. There were approximately four or five original silica beads, which formed a cluster, per composite of nanoparticles whose size was about 60-70 nm. Other main factors of polymerization conditions including the amounts of sodium dodecyl sulfonate and silica are also discussed. (C) 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Shell crosslinked core-shell nanoparticles (SCCSN) with modified SiO2 as core and crosslinked polystyrene (PS) as shell were prepared via miniemulsion polymerization in the presence of silane modified nanosilica. The structure characterization of SCCSN was examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetry (TG),dynamic light scattering (DLS), modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). It was found SCCSN of about 90 nm in diameter was spherical and could uniformly disperse after surface grafting PS. In addition, the glass transition temperature of SCCSN obviously increased with increasing divinyl benzene amounts. The PS shell was crosslinked using divinyl benzene as crosslinker, which not only tightly anchors the shell on the nanoparticle surface, raises PS grafted ratio and prevents nanoparticles interaction, but also segregates the silica core from the matrix and avoids entanglement between the shell PS and the matrix macromolecules in SCCSN filled PS composites. MDSC analyses showed that both silica and SCCSN led to slight reduction in glass transition temperature of PS. Dynamic rheology showed both silica and SCCSN did not influence the mechanism responsible for the origin of rheological nonlinearity assigned to disentanglement of PS macromolecules in the matrix. The SiO2 core in SCCSN exhibited a reinforcement effect slightly stronger than that of bare SiO2 particles and the reinforcement was related to the crosslinking degree of the PS shell.

Abstract:Polystyrene (PS)/ZnAl layered double-hydroxide (LDH) nanocomposites were synthesized via in situ emulsion and suspension polymerization in the presence of N-lauroyl-glutamate surfactant and long-chain spacer and characterized with elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectrum, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and thermogravimetric analysis. The XRD and TEM results demonstrate that the exfoliated ZnAl-LDH layers were well dispersed at molecular level in the PS matrix. The completely exfoliated PS/LDH nanocomposites were obtained even at the 20 and 10 wt % LDH loadings prepared by emulsion polymerization and suspension polymerization, respectively. The PS/LDH nanocomposites with a suitable amount of LDH showed apparently enhanced thermal stability. When the 50% weight loss was selected as a comparison point, the decomposition temperature of the exfoliated PS/LDH sample prepared by emulsion polymerization with a 5 wt % LDH loading was about 28 degrees C higher than that of pure PS. Abstract:A series of [60]fullerene (C-60)-containing poly(ethylene oxide)-block-polystyrene (PEO-b-PS) with various numbers and different locations of C-60 along the polymer chains were designed and synthesized via a combination of "click" chemistry and living/controlled polymerization techniques such as anionic polymerization, atom transfer radical polymerization, and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. One C-60 was tethered either to the end of a PS block (PEO-b-PS-C-60) or at the junction point between PS and PEO blocks [PEO-(C-60)-PS]; while multiple C(60)s could be attached randomly along the PS block (PEO-b-PS/C-60). The reaction conditions were carefully controlled to ensure a quantitative C-60 functionality at precise locations in the case of PEO-b-PS-C-60 and PEO-(C-60)-PS and to avoid crosslinking in the synthesis of PEO-b-PS/C-60. The results have implications in the precision synthesis of fullerene polymers in general. These C-60-containing diblock copolymers possess different composition, diverse architecture, and high fullerene functionality. They can serve as model "shape amphiphiles" for the construction of complex hierarchical structures via the interplay between C-60-C-60 aggregation and block copolymer self-assembly/micro-phase separation.

Abstract:The SiO2/polystyrene nanocomposite particles were synthesized through miniemulsion polymerization by using sodium lauryl sulfate surfactant (SLS), hexadecane costabilizer in the presence of silica particles coated with methacryloxy(propyl)trimethoxysilane. Core-shell or other interesting morphology composite particles were obtained depending on the size of the silica particles and the surfactant concentration employed. By adjusting these parameters, it was possible to control the size and morphology of the composite particles.
