Abstract:Magnetic Fe3O4@C nanoparticles (NPs) were fabricated by hydrothermal synthesis for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB). Fe3O4@C NPs were prepared from FeCl2, FeCl3 and glucose after hydrothermal treatment at 160 degrees C for 6 h. After characterization by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and infrared spectrometer, the adsorption behaviors of MB on Fe3O4@C NPs were investigated. The results indicated that Fe3O4@C NPs adsorbed MB effectively with a large capacity of 117 mg/g. The adsorption isotherm was described by Temkin model. The adsorption reached the equilibrium within 3 h and the kinetics followed pseudo-second-order model. The increase of ionic strength inhibited the adsorption, and the decrease of pH led to the dramatic decrease in adsorption capacity. The adsorption was endothermal, thus higher temperature was preferred. The magnetic separation after adsorption was easily achieved and Fe3O4@C NPs could be regenerated by washing with HCl aqueous solution. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In general, the synthesis of magnetic composites by in-situ, ex-situ, layer-by-layer and self-template methods provide desired properties, such as magnetic properties. However, syntheses using these methods still have the difficulty of controlling and avoiding aggregation of magnetic particles in the matrix. In this research, the magnetic MOF composite Fe3O4@SiO2@HKUST-1 with a core–shell form has been successfully synthesized through a facile green route using a pre-grinding method and less solvent. The morphology and structure of the core–shell, as confirmed by TEM and SEM, showed that the magnetic composite was spherical and not agglomerated. The incorporation of Fe3O4@SiO2 magnetic particles with mass variations of 50 and 100% to HKUST-1 was able to increase the pore size and resulted in the formation of mesopores. The composite when used as an adsorbent for synthetic dyes showed an adsorption capacity of 2.3 times higher (434.78 mg/g) than pure HKUST-1 (188.7 mg/g). The kinetic and isotherm study of the adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir isotherm model. In addition, the feature of Fe3O4@SiO2 magnetic on the composite gave a stability enhancement of the adsorbent when used in aqueous media, being evidenced by the high adsorption capacity of the composite (71.95%) after being recycled five times.

Abstract:Magnetic composites have been widely used in the area of wastewater treatment, which own the properties of simple and quick adsorption and separation functions. This article presented a cost-effective and chemically modified adsorbent (Fe3O4@SiO2@Chitosan) based on a novel facile light-assisted technique for methyl orange (MO) removal. The characterization results of FT-IR, TEM, XRD and the hysteresis loop showed that Fe3O4@SiO2@Chitosan was successfully prepared. The adsorption properties of the magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2@Chitosan composite had been discussed in detail. Results show that the magnetic composite was able to remove more than 99.15% of dyes in water under optimized conditions. The Fe3O4@SiO2@Chitosan composite was stable and easily recovered, which demonstrated that the Fe3O4@SiO2@Chitosan can be successfully used as a reusable absorbent for effective removal of methyl orange from wastewater.

Abstract:A novel type of porous magnetic microsphere (Fe3O4@HCP) was firstly synthesized just via one-step Friedel-Crafts alkylation promoted by FeCl3. This universal and facile method to fabricate porous magnetic microspheres possesses distinct advantages such as cheap reactants, mild reaction conditions, a short reaction time and a simple post-treatment process. The core-shell spheres with a well-defined and uniform morphology possess a high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface area (770 m(2) g(-1)). Besides, the magnetization saturation value reaches up to 18 A m(2) kg(-1) which is high enough to separate Fe3O4@HCP from aqueous solution. Fe3O4@HCP possesses fast adsorption kinetics and an excellent adsorption capacity for organic dyes: methyl orange (211 mg g (1)) and fuchsin basic (231 mg g(-1)). The adsorption-saturated Fe3O4@HCP composites can be easily collected by an external magnetic field and reused at least 3 times after simple Soxhlet extraction and drying.

Abstract:The magnetic Fe3O4-HKUST-1 nanocomposites were synthesized using a simple and green hydrothermal technique, utilizing Fe3O4 and the chemically stable metal–organic framework HKUST-1. The Fe3O4-HKUST-1 nanocomposites were synthesized with a varied proportion of Fe3O4 and subjected to advanced characterization, which included XRD, IR, BET, TG, SEM, TEM, EDS, and VSM. The magnetic nanocomposite 0.4 Fe3O4-HKUST-1 (FH4) had a rough surface with spherical morphology and a good proportion of micro and mesopores. The magnetic nanocomposite had a mean pore size of 2.58 nm, with pore volume of 0.35 cm3/g, having excellent magnetic saturation performance (26.39 emu/g). The adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetics of magnetic nanocomposites on azo dye neutral red (NR) wastewater were assessed in detail. In contrast to the Freundlich model, the Langmuir model better described the adsorption isotherms, while the pseudo-second-order kinetic model better captured the adsorption kinetics. The FH4 magnetic nanocomposite was the most effective adsorbent with the highest adsorption capacity for NR separation.

Abstract:Magnetic CoFe2O4-functionalized graphene sheets (CoFe2O4–FGS) nanocomposites have been synthesized by hydrothermal treatment of inorganic salts and thermal exfoliated graphene sheets. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations show that cobalt ferrite nanoparticles with sizes of 10–40nm are well dispersed on graphene sheets. OH− was recognized as a tie to integrate the inorganic salts with the graphene sheets, which made reaction started and developed on the surface of graphene sheets and formed cobalt ferrite nanoparticles on graphene sheets. The adsorption kinetics investigation revealed that the adsorption of methyl orange from aqueous solution over the as-prepared CoFe2O4–FGS nanocomposites followed pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the adsorption capacity was examined as high as 71.54mgg−1. The combination of the superior adsorption of FGS and the magnetic properties of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles can be used as a powerful separation tool to deal with water pollution.

Abstract:The magnetic Fe3O4/C core-shell nanoparticles have been synthesized by a simple strategy and used as adsorbents for removal of organic dyes from aqueous solution. The resulting products are characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra and Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR). Adsorption performances of the nanomaterial adsorbents are tested with removal of methylene blue (MB) and cresol red (CR) from aqueous solution. The effects of solution pH value, adsorption time and capacity of the nanocomposites have been fully investigated. The results reveal that the nanospheres can be easily manipulated by an external magnetic field with high separation efficiency. In addition, the process is clean and safe for purifying water pollution. The prepared Fe3O4/C complex nanomaterials could thus be used as promising adsorbents for the remove organic dyes, especially, cationic dye, from polluted water. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Facile preparation and application of magnetic chitosan/fly ash composite as a hybrid biosorbent for the effective removal of direct dyes

Abstract:A novel magnetic chitosan (CTS)/fly ash (FA) hybrid composite (Fe 3 O 4 @CTS/FA) was fabricated and characterized by various analytical techniques, and directly used for anionic dye removal from water as a low-cost biosorbent. The effects of some key parameters on adsorption, adsorption mechanism and reusability of Fe 3 O 4 @CTS/FA were investigated. The results show that Fe 3 O 4 @CTS/FA with sensitive magnetic responsiveness and pore structure displays strong adsorption performance for Direct Blue 86 (DB 86) and Direct Black 19 (DB 19) dyes, and the matching adsorption capacities can reach 225 and 199 mg/g, which are approximately 8.1 and 6.3 times higher than that of FA. The dye removal efficiency is almost 100 % at pH 2.0 and 25°C, and still reach 91.6 and 95.1 % with increasing pH to 8.0, respectively. The Pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models perfectly elucidate the spontaneous adsorption processes controlled by intraparticle diffusion and adsorption behaviour, respectively. Adsorption mechanism primarily involved electrostatic attraction, various H-bonding at multiple sites and n-π bonding. The dye-adsorbed composite can be rapidly and completely recovered from water by an external magnetic field and recycled at least three times. Fe 3 O 4 @CTS/FA would be a promising biosorbent with high cost-effectiveness, simplicity of preparation and implementation, easy recovery and reusability.

Abstract:A series of magnetic mesoporous FeNi/graphitic carbon nanocomposites have been synthesized through a simple nanocasting method using mesoporous silica SBA-15 as the template. Metal nitrates and natural soybean oil are respectively used as the magnetic particle precursors and carbon source, which can be infiltrated into the silica template after impregnation, grinding mix and heat treatment. X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption–desorption, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, vibrating-sample magnetometry and thermogravimetric analysis techniques are used to characterize the samples. It is observed that high content of magnetic FeNi alloy nanocrystals with the sizes of about 3–6nm are well homodispersed into the walls of graphitic mesoporous carbon matrix, and the resulting nanocomposites have a uniform mesostructure with a high specific surface area, large pore volume, and high saturation magnetization. Because of these characteristics, the obtained magnetic mesoporous FeNi/graphitic carbon nanocomposites can be used as efficient and recycled adsorbents in the removal of dye from wastewater.

Highly Efficient Magnetic Separation of Organic Dyes from Liquid Water Utilizing Fe3O4@graphene Composites

Abstract:The Fe3O4@graphene composites was prepared by a simple hydrothermal strategy for efficient removal of organic dyes from liquid water. The effects of solution pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage and initial dye concentration on the adsorption performance of Fe3O4@graphene composites were systematically studied and the maximum adsorption capacities of Methyl orange (MO), Rose Red B (RB), Malachite green (MG), Congo red (CR) and Crystal Viollet (CV) on Fe3O4@graphene magnetic composites were found to be 144.9, 105.2, 59.9, 77.9 and 208.3 mg.g(-1), respectively. The adsorption studies indicated that pseudo-second-order model could depict adsorption kinetics very well and that Langmuir isotherm model could describe isotherms well. The adsorption capacity of organic dyes on Fe3O4@graphene composites decreases with adsorption-desorption cycling, but still remains more than 42% of its initial adsorption capacity after 5 cycles. The results suggest that combining the high porousity structure, lightweight, and high surface area of graphene composites with the super-paramagnetic property of Fe3O4, the prepared Fe3O4@graphene composites is promising candidate for removal of organic dyes pollutions from water effectively.
Synthesis of Fe2SiO4-Fe7Co3 Nanocomposite Dispersed in the Mesoporous SBA-15: Application as Magnetically Separable Adsorbent

Abstract:The mixture containing alloy and oxide with iron-based phases has shown interesting properties compared to the isolated species and the synergy between the phases has shown positive effect on dye adsorption. This paper describes the synthesis of Fe2SiO4-Fe7Co3-based nanocomposite dispersed in Santa Barbara Amorphous (SBA)-15 and its application in dye adsorption followed by magnetic separation. Thus, it was studied the variation of reduction temperature and amount of hydrogen used in synthesis and the effect of these parameters on the physicochemical properties of the iron and cobalt based oxide/alloy mixture, as well as the methylene blue adsorption capacity. The XRD and Mössbauer results, along with the temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) profiles, confirmed the formation of Fe2SiO4-Fe7Co3-based nanocomposites. Low-angle XRD, N2 isotherms, and TEM images show the formation of the SBA-15 based mesoporous support with a high surface area (640 m2/g). Adsorption tests confirmed that the material reduced at 700 °C using 2% of H2 presented the highest adsorption capacity (49 mg/g). The nanocomposites can be easily separated from the dispersion by applying an external magnetic field. The interaction between the dye and the nanocomposite occurs mainly by π-π interactions and the mixture of the Fe2SiO4 and Fe7Co3 leads to a synergistic effect, which favor the adsorption.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials have great potential for solving dye contamination problems due to their excellent organic dye adsorption properties. However, MOFs adsorbents present a tremendous drawback which is their poor separability. Herein, the core-shell Fe3O4@ZIF-8-PSS with abundant active sites and sensitive magnetic responses was synthesized in one step via simultaneously introducing imidazole ligands and poly(sodium-4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) modifiers into the dispersion of Fe3O4 microspheres. This magnetic Fe3O4@ZIF-8-PSS microsphere can complete the magnetic separation and recovery in only 10 seconds. Moreover, the addition of PSS increases the active sites of Fe3O4@ZIF-8-PSS, which is more favorable for the adsorption of organic dyes. The maximum adsorption capacity for crystal violet (CV) can reach 382 mg/g. The adsorption process was consistent with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption mechanism of Fe3O4@ZIF-8-PSS for CV is mainly attributed to electrostatic interaction and π-π interaction. The effects of solution pH and coexisting ions for the adsorption capacity were adequately discussed. These studies suggest that Fe3O4@ZIF-8-PSS not only has efficient adsorption properties but also can be easily separated by external magnetic fields after being used for organic dye wastewater treatment, which may have considerable potential for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Due to the presence of several hydroxyl and amino groups on the surface, chitosan (CS) has been reported to be a potential candidate to solve the pollution caused by dyes in different industrial wastewater. However, it is associated with the recycling issues. Nano-Fe3O4 has the advantages of easy magnetic separation and surface functionalization, which can improve the efficiency as well as selectivity of separation. However, its tendency for agglomeration can reduce the adsorption capacity. MXene can provide suitable support for both CS and Fe3O4 to construct new 3O4@CS composites. In this study, 3O4@CSmagnetic nanosphere was synthesized by ultrasonic self-assembly to remove Congo red (CR). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy were employed to characterize the nanocomposites. According to the batch experiments, the adsorption kinetics were found to predominantly follow quasi-secondary rate kinetics. The adsorption followed Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorption process was found to be endothermic, entropy-driven, and thermodynamically spontaneous process. The adsorption capacity for CR was estimated as 620.22 mg·g−1.

Abstract:Fine powder adsorbents or catalysts often show better adsorptive or catalytic properties, but they encounter the difficulties of separation and recovery in application. In this study, four inexpensive magnetic powder MnO–Fe2O3 composites used as adsorbent–catalyst materials were prepared and characterized. These materials could be recovered efficiently by a magnetic separation method. Their adsorptive properties for the removal of an azo-dye, acid red B (ARB), from water and the regeneration of adsorbents containing ARB by catalytic combustion was studied. These powder adsorbents showed excellent adsorption towards ARB under acidic conditions. A very fast adsorption rate was observed and could be well described by a pseudo-second-order kinetics model. The adsorption capacity increased with increasing Fe content and surface area of the adsorbent, and the highest adsorption capacity of 105.3mg/g was obtained at pH 3.5. The adsorption was not affected by the presence of Cl−, but was significantly affected by SO42−. The adsorbent containing ARB can be regenerated by catalytic combustion of adsorbed ARB at 400°C in air. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that this material is reusable.
Synthesis of mesoporous magnetic MnFe2O4@CS-SiO2 microsphere and its adsorption performance of Zn2+ and MB studies

Abstract:Because of its superior physical and chemical properties, MnFe2O4 is regarded as one of the best magnetic material alternatives for Fe3O4. However, MnFe2O4 alone cannot remove heavy metal ions and dyes. Here, we report on a new mesoporous magnetic MnFe2O4@CS-SiO2 microsphere material that was synthesised via the hydrothermal method to remove Zn2+ and methylene blue (MB) in simulated textile wastewater. The composite was characterised using a vibrating sample magnetometer, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and a Brunauer-Emmett Teller analysis. The pH, adsorbent dosage, initial adsorbate concentration, and reaction time effects on the removal of Zn2+ and MB were studied under different conditions, and a possible removal mechanism was proposed and discussed. The experimental results show that the suitable pH range for MB adsorption was extremely wide, and the adsorption equilibrium can be reached within 30 min. In addition, the prepared material has excellent stability. With an excellent removal efficiency as high as 56.1% and 93.86% for Zn2+ and MB, respectively, after five consecutive cycles and a superior adsorption capacity compared with other materials, the prepared composite in this paper proved to be a promising and effective magnetic adsorbent for the removal of Zn2+ and MB from textile wastewater.

Abstract:Abstract3D metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can be appropriate templates for the fabrication of nanomaterials due to they have active sites exposed on the channel or surface, which thus provide them with improved catalytic performance. In this study, a 3D cobalt-based MOF [Co(H2bpta)]n (Co-MOF), where H4bpta denotes 2,2′,4,4′-biphenyltetracarboxylic acid, has been constructed with the use of a ligand with a high carbon content. On this basis, a 2D magnetic carbon-coated cobalt nanoparticle composite (Co@C) was prepared by using the title MOF under different temperatures. Magnetic Co@C can readily absorb dye from the solution and can thus act as an inexpensive and fast-acting adsorbent. Moreover, we have explored the adsorption isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics of the anion dyes in detail. The adsorption capacity of the Co@C-800 for investigated methyl orange (MO) and congo red (CR) dyes were 773.48 and 495.66 mg g−1, respectively. It is noteworthy that MO adsorption is higher in existing materials. Thermodynamic studies suggest that the adsorption processes are spontaneous and exothermic. This study opens a new insight into the synthesis and application of carbon-based materials that enable the selective removal of organic dyes.Graphical AbstractA Co-MOF has been solvothermal synthesized and structurally characterized, which was used as a combined catalyst and carbon source for the synthesis of magnetic Co@C. Abstract:Abstract 3D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be appropriate templates for the fabrication of nanomaterials due to they have active sites exposed on the channel or surface, which thus provide them with improved catalytic performance. In this study, a 3D cobalt-based MOF [Co(H 2 bpta)] n (Co-MOF), where H 4 bpta denotes 2,2′,4,4′-biphenyltetracarboxylic acid, has been constructed with the use of a ligand with a high carbon content. On this basis, a 2D magnetic carbon-coated cobalt nanoparticle composite (C@Co) was prepared by using the title MOF. Magnetic C@Co can readily absorb dye from the solution and can thus act as an inexpensive and fast-acting adsorbent. Moreover, we have explored the adsorption isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics of the anion dyes in detail. The adsorption capacity of the C@Co for investigated methyl orange (MO) and congo red (CR) dyes were 773.48 and 495.66 mg g − 1 , respectively. It is noteworthy that MO adsorption is higher in existing materials. Thermodynamic studies suggest that the adsorption processes are spontaneous and exothermic. This study opens a new insight into the synthesis and application of carbon-based materials that enable the selective removal of organic dyes.

Abstract:The activated carbon (AC) prepared from the shells of coconut and palm, and MgAl-layered double hydroxide (MgAl-LDH) were performed as the adsorbent for removing cationic (methylene blue) and anionic (orange II) dyes in water. The precursors of AC, MgAl-LDH and Fe 3 O 4 were mechanically mixed to provide the magnetic composites, which were investigated by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, elemental mapping, BET, VSM, zeta potential and UV–VIS. The composites showed the characteristics and the synergistic effects of AC, MgAl-LDH and Fe 3 O 4 with large specific surface area (320 – 330 m 2 /g) due to AC and MgAl-LDH, and high magnetization (12.5 – 14.4 emu/g) due to Fe 3 O 4 . The composite adsorbents revealed the bifunctional active-surface on removing both methylene blue (q m = 568 – 625 mg/g) and orange II (q m = 518 – 550 mg/g) based on monolayer coverage, and pseudo -second order reaction and spontaneous process. After 5 th cycle, the adsorption capacity was reduced just 6.0 – 9.3 % with high performance on the structure and magnetism.

Abstract:Adsorption and separation of dyes are extremely important as they damage the water environment and human health. ZIF-8 has the benefits of large specific surface area, explicit structure and a good confinement effect on POM, which can better facilitate the synergetic effect of POM and ZIF-8. Therefore, ZIF-8 was chosen as the support material to wrap H3PW12O40. In the present work, magnetic ZIF-8@H3PW12O40 composites were prepared by a facile impregnation synthesis strategy and applied to the adsorption of cationic dyes with methylene blue (MB) as a representative. Compared with the other three prepared materials, Fe3O4@ZIF-8@H3PW12O40 exhibited the best adsorption performance. The adsorption process conformed to the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model, and the adsorption reaction was spontaneous with the maximum adsorption capacity of up to 431.03 mg g-1 within 20 min. The electrostatic attraction has been testified to be the major driving force of the adsorption process, and the material can still hold 90% of the max adsorption capacity after 5 cycles, which serve as the foundation for its further applications in the field of adsorption.
