Abstract:This paper reports plasma-induced styrene removal characteristics in air with a homemade ac/dc plasma system. The removal efficiency and reaction kinetics are investigated in terms of source specifications, relative humidity (RH), initial concentrations, by-products, and specific plasma energy density. The result shows that, the larger the difference between peak and dc voltages, the better the removal efficiency. For an initial concentration of 100-110 ppm, the maximum efficiency is around 95% at the energy density of 37-39 J/L, and about 94 ppm is removed under a lower RH. It drops, however, to about 50 and 25 ppm for the RH of 64% and 89%, respectively. Meantime, with increasing humidity, the global plasma kinetics is changed from nonsignificant to significant linear radical termination processes. With regard to by-products, they are mainly benzaldehyde and phenylacetaldehyde.

Abstract:In this work, plasma-catalytic removal of low concentrations of acetone over CuO/γ-Al2O3 catalysts was carried out in a cylindrical dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor. The combination of plasma and the CuO/γ-Al2O3 catalysts significantly enhanced the removal efficiency of acetone compared to the plasma process using the pure γ-Al2O3 support, with the 5.0 wt% CuO/γ-Al2O3 catalyst exhibiting the best acetone removal efficiency of 67.9%. Catalyst characterization was carried out to understand the effect the catalyst properties had on the activity of the CuO/γ-Al2O3 catalysts in the plasma-catalytic reaction. The results indicated that the formation of surface oxygen species on the surface of the catalysts was crucial for the oxidation of acetone in the plasma-catalytic reaction. The effects that various operating parameters (discharge power, flow rate and initial concentration of acetone) and the interactions between these parameters had on the performance of the plasma-catalytic removal of acetone over the 5.0 wt% CuO/γ-Al2O3 catalyst were investigated using central composite design (CCD). The significance of the independent variables and their interactions were evaluated by means of the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The results showed that the gas flow rate was the most significant factor affecting the removal efficiency of acetone, whilst the initial concentration of acetone played the most important role in determining the energy efficiency of the plasma-catalytic process.
Influences of Water Vapor and CO2 on NOx Removal by Plasma-facilitated Selective Catalytic Reduction

Abstract:Plasma facilitated Selective Catalytic Reduction(PF-SCR)was considered as a promising way to realize NOx control in order to meet increasingly strict standard.Earlier study has proved that plasma raised NOx removal rate significantly after combined with catalysts,and high N2 selectivity was obtained.But the influences of water vapor and CO2,which existed largely in real flue gas and exhaust gas,were not considered and analyzed detailedly in the process of PF-SCR in view of intermediate products.In this paper,three mixture systems including N2/O2/NOx/C2H4,N2/O2/NOx/C2H4/H2O(g)and N2/O2/NOx/C2H4/H2O(g)/CO2 were treated respectively by PF-SCR over Ag/γ-Al2O3 in the presence of 500 ppm NO,6800 ppm C2H4,8% O2,10%CO2 and about 1%H2O(g).N2 was balance gas.Plasma was produced by dielectric barrier discharge in a line-cylinder structure reactor which was filled with glass beads.Results showed that NOx removal was suppressed remarkably by water vapor in PF-SCR system in contrast with no water vapor containing.It's attributed to the cooperative results of water suppression to plasma oxidation and suppression to catalysts.In addition to poor hydrothermal stability of Ag/γ-Al2O3,water vapor with lower concentration suppressed the intermediates formation like C2H2,aldehydes and N-containing organics in plasma oxidation stage,which further deteriorated NOx removal over catalyst.GC spectrums also testified the conclusion above.As the main byproduct,CO formation was suppressed because of decrease of C2H4 oxidation and intermediates production.CO2 didn't seem to show obvious influence on NOx removal by PF-SCR system in the presence of vapor.

Abstract:Synergy study is of great importance to optimize the two-stage plasma-facilitated catalysis system and also necessary to gain a mechanistic understanding of the overall reaction process. In this paper, the effects of the long-lived chemical products of plasma pretreatment on the subsequent selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx at fixed and changed energy density of dielectric-barrier-discharge plasma reactor were investigated, respectively, for the aim of the synergy study of plasma-facilitated C2H4-SCR (PF-SCR) of NOx over Ag/ γ-Al2O3 catalyst at lower temperature. For comparison, C2H4-SCR of NOx over Ag/ γ-Al2O3 catalyst alone was also considered. Results showed that PF-SCR for NOx removal exhibited obvious synergistic effect at 240 °C, and the NOx removal efficiency for plasma alone, C2H4-SCR alone, and PF-SCR were 43.6%, 6.7%, and 90.1%, respectively. In the NO/NO2C2H4/O2N2 system, the long-lived chemical products of plasma pretreatment for the synergistic link between plasma and catalysis included NO2, aldehyde (formaldehyde and acetaldehyde), and nitrogen-contained organic compounds (methyl nitrate, nitro methyl, and ethyl nitrate). Among the nitrogen-contained chemical products of plasma pretreatment, the major synergistic link between plasma and catalysis was NO2 at lower input energy density, transferred to the mutual action of NO2 and nitrogen-contained organic compounds over catalyst at higher input energy density. © 2007 IEEE.
Study on the degradation of VOCs in a plasma-catalyst hybrid reactor

Abstract:The performance of a plasma-catalyst hybrid reactor for VOCs removal was studied in this paper, xylene and MnOx were acted as the pollutant and catalyst, respectively. The combinations between reactor and catalyst were conducted in active discharging and post discharging zone, respectively. The parameters investigated included discharge power, discharge gap width, inlet xylene concentration and moisture content in the gas stream. The CO2 selectivity was determined synchronously. Experimental results indicated that, no matter where the catalyst was located, the plasma-catalyst hybrid technology can effectively destroy xylene molecules. For dry gas stream, high removal efficiency of xylene would accompany with the high power and low inlet concentration, and achieved the best at different discharge gap width in different combining zone. Too much or too little water vapor did not favor xylene destruction. An optimal xylene removal was reached at around 1.6% by volume of humidity content. In addition, the more important result obtained from this work was that, despite the changes of experimental conditions, the higher synergetic effect was always occurred when the catalyst was placed in the post discharging zone. The same conclusion was educed on CO2 selectivity, and then, benefit the environment.

Abstract:Different transition metals (Cr/Fe/Mn/Co) derived catalysts supported on γ-Al2O3 were prepared by the isovolumetric impregnation method for catalytic ozonation of acetone (C3H6O), and their catalytic activities under industrial complex conditions were investigated. Among them, CrOx/γ-Al2O3 catalyst with Cr loading of 1.5%, abbreviated as Cr1.5%, achieved the best activity, benefitting from its larger surface area, larger proportion of Cr6+/Cr, more chemically desorbed oxygen species Oβ, appropriate acidity, and superiority of low-temperature reducibility. Simulated industrial conditions were used to investigate the applicability of Cr1.5% catalysts for catalytic ozonation of acetone. Results illustrated that the optimum temperature range was 120–140 °C, with molar ratio O3/C3H6O > 6. Different C3H6O initial concentrations had less effect over the activity of Cr1.5% catalysts, with little residual ozone, confirming the applicability of Cr1.5% catalysts in industrial application. The effects of sulfur/water vapor on catalytic activity were also investigated, and satisfactory resistance to sulfur or water vapor individually was obtained. Finally, in-situ DRIFTS measurement was carried out, to explore and illustrate mechanisms of acetone catalytic ozonation pathways and sulfur/water poisoning.

Abstract:Role of nitrogen-containing organic compounds produced during the plasma process on the subsequent of C2H4-SCR of NOx over Ag/γ-Al2O3 catalyst at 523K was studied in a two-stage plasma-facilitated catalysis system. Results showed that nitrogen-containing organic compounds (methyl nitrate, ethyl nitrate, nitro methyl) produced in the plasma reactor can improve the subsequent catalytic performance at lower temperature besides NO2 and aldehyde; more the amounts of nitrogen-containing organic compounds produced after plasma pretreatment, more the amounts of N2 produced in the subsequent catalysis process, and N2 selectivity leveled at about 82%.

Abstract:Acetone is solvent widely used in laboratories and factories. Serious problems will occur when it is exposed to the environment. Therefore, a new design for a bimetallic metal functional group catalyst that can convert acetone into carbon dioxide and water within 250 °C was prepared, in order to effectively treat acetone and reduce the required energy. Hydrophobic Y type zeolite adsorption and low-temperature catalytic combustion were used to continuously treat acetone, and the effect of different operating parameters (including different metal loads, metal content, transformation temperature, pollutant concentration, and space velocity) on the efficiency of acetone treatment was discussed in this study. The isothermal adsorption model, kinetics, and thermodynamic model analysis were also used to establish the reaction mechanism, and to explore the factors affecting the catalyst reaction rate. The results show that the acetone conversion rate of 10-Fe 1 Mn 1 -USY reaches 90% at 400 ppm, 20,000 h −1 space velocity, and 227 °C. The kinetic behavior of the reaction between 10-Fe 1 Mn 1 -USY and acetone is more suited to the Power-rate Law model. Arrhenius equation analysis results show that the required activation energy for the reaction between 10-Fe 1 Mn 1 -USY and acetone is 70.2 kJ mol −1 , and the collision frequency factor is 2.81 × 10 5 s −1 . This reaction is an endothermic reaction, and the main reaction mechanism is surface metal oxidation.

Abstract:The synergistic effect of plasma-facilitated C_2H_4 selective catalytic reduction(SCR) of NO_x over Ag/γ-Al_2O_3 catalyst at lower catalyst temperature was studied for the NO/NO_2/C_2H_4/O_2/N_2 gas system,and a dielectric barrier discharge(DBD) reactor was used as plasma reactor.Results showed that plasma-facilitated catalysis system for NO_x removal exhibited obvious synergistic effect at 240 ℃.Based on the analysis of the products of plasma pre-activation,the synergistic link products included three kinds of chemical compound like NO_2,aldehydes(formaldehyde and acetaldehyde),nitrogen-contained organic compounds(methyl nitrate,nitro methyl and ethyl nitrate).The removal of NO_x in DBD plasma reactor means that nitrogen-contained organic compounds yield.During the process of plasma pre-activation,improving the input energy density of DBD reactor or initial C_2H_4 concentration facilitated the conversion of NO_2 to nitrogencontained organic compounds and the formation of aldehydes,further improving the NO_x removal efficiency of plasma-facilitated catalysis system.

Abstract:Based on the important effect of catalysts on the plasma-catalytic system, the CM/Z5 catalyst prepared by the incipient-wetness impregnation method is used for non-thermal plasma catalysis for toluene removal. The low-temperature plasma used is produced by dielectric barrier discharge. Toluene removal performance with single plasma is investigated by variation in experimental parameters. Results indicate that with the increase in discharge length, the selectivity of carbon dioxide increased. With the increase in toluene concentration and gas flow rate, carbon dioxide selectivity decreases gradually, while toluene conversion shows almost no difference. With the introduction of CM/Z5 catalyst into the back end of plasma, the toluene conversion rate and carbon dioxide selectivity could be significantly improved and ozone in the exhaust gas could be eliminated to meet emission standards at the same time. This work is meaningful in promoting the industrial application of plasma catalytic coupling technology to treat volatile organic compounds.

Abstract:Abstract Acetone serves as an important solvent and building block for the chemical industry, but the current industrial synthesis of acetone is generally accompanied by the energy-intensive and costly cumene process used for phenol production. Here we propose a sustainable route for acetone synthesis via propane wet reforming at a moderate temperature of 350 o C with the use of platinum-tin nanoparticles supported on γ-aluminium oxide (PtSn/γ-Al 2 O 3 ) as catalyst. We achieve an acetone productivity of 858.4 μmol/g with a selectivity of 57.8% among all carbon-based products and 99.3% among all liquid products. Detailed spectroscopic and controlled experiments reveal that the acetone is formed through a tandem catalytic process involving propene and isopropanol as intermediates. We also demonstrate facile ketone synthesis via wet reforming with the use of different alkanes ( e.g ., n-butane, n-pentane, n-hexane, n-heptane, and n-octane) as substrates, proving the wide applicability of this strategy.

However, heir studies were based on simulated gases( mixed gases or single gas), which were quite different from vehicle exhaust gas, which were quite different from real vehicle exhaust gas from the running car. Formation and Quantification of Intermediate Products for NO_x Removal by Plasma-Facilitated Selective Catalytic Reduction

Abstract:Plasma-facilitated selective catalytic reduction (PF-SCR) is a promising way to improve NOx removal at lower catalyst temperatures in an oxygen rich atmosphere. The influence of active intermediate products after plasma oxidation on the NOx removal was investigated using a two-stage process consisting of plasma pretreatment of the simulated gas before flowing over a lean NOx catalyst in the presence of C2H4 as the reductant and Ag/γ-Al2O3 as the catalysts. Gas chromatography (GC) indicated that the peak areas of all the intermediate products increased as the energy density increased. The concentrations of the intermediate products including ethane (C2H2) and formaldehyde (HCHO) from partial oxidation of the hydrocarbon were measured to give the energy-concentration curve for C2H2 and HCHO. The increased intermediate product concentration formed by the plasma pretreatment increased the NOx removal rate up to 79.9% with 394 J·L-1 compared with 31.5% by Ag/γ-Al2O3 working alone.
Influence of reduction temperature on Pt–ZrO 2 interfaces for the gas-phase hydrogenation of acetone to isopropanol

Abstract:The gas-phase hydrogenation of acetone to isopropanol is an environmentally benign process relevant to chemical, energy and medical fields, but the catalysts working at low temperatures and pressures remain challenging. Herein, we show that the intensified gas-phase hydrogenation of acetone to isopropanol occurs at Pt–ZrO 2 interfaces and the catalytic performance can be influenced by reduction temperature. The catalytic activity of the Pt–ZrO 2 interface increases with the increase in reduction temperature to 200 °C and is nearly unchanged with further reduction to 300 °C due to the stability of the Pt–ZrO 2 interface. For example, Pt/ZrO 2 reduced at 200 °C with the highly active Pt–ZrO 2 interface delivers 92% acetone conversion with 98% isopropanol selectivity at 80 °C, a weight hourly space velocity of 10 h −1 , a H 2 /acetone molar ratio of 2, and 0.1 MPa, due to the high Pt 0 and oxygen vacancy content. A series of electron microscopic, thermal, and spectroscopic analyses testify that acetone could be efficiently adsorbed and activated at the Pt–ZrO 2 interface. This study particularly investigates the influence of reduction temperature on acetone adsorption and H 2 activation at the Pt–ZrO 2 interface, establishing the foundation for the rational design of high-cost performance catalysts for aldehyde/ketone hydrogenation and other reactions.

Abstract:The use of non-thermal plasma (NTP) technology for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) control has been limited because of its drawbacks. Although the combination of catalysis in plasma can avoid some of the limitations, there are still disadvantages such as the O3 byproduct. In this study, catalysts were combined in the post-plasma. It is found that not only O3 is efficiently eliminated, but also the removal of toluene is greatly enhanced due to O3 decomposition. The effect of catalysts, humidity and the initial O3 concentration on simultaneous catalytic removal of toluene and O3 was studied. Results show that the performance of catalysts for toluene conversion is closely related to that for O3 decomposition. The increase of O3 concentration benefits toluene conversion, whereas water has a negative effect on the toluene conversion. Catalytic ozonation is mainly responsible for the toluene decomposition in the post-plasma.

Abstract:The removal of hexanal by a combination of a non-thermal plasma and catalyst was studied. There was a synergism between the plasma and gamma-Al2O3 that gave a hexanal removal efficiency of 87.1% at 80 degrees C and 2.8 W discharge power. The removal efficiency was improved to 96.5% when the gamma-Al2O3 was loaded with 7.5% MnOx, and a comparable efficiency was also obtained with a Pt/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst. The 7.5%MnOx/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst was stable over 50 h use during which the removal efficiency did not decline.

Abstract:It is urgent to control the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) due to their harmful effects on the environment and human health. A hybrid system integrating non-thermal-plasma and catalysis is regarded as one of the most promising technologies for VOCs removal due to their high VOCs removal efficiency, product selectivity and energy efficiency. This review systematically documents the main findings and improvements of VOCs removal using plasma-catalysis technology in recent 10 years. To better understand the fundamental relation between different aspects of this research field, this review mainly addresses the catalyst development, key influential factors, generation of by-products and reaction mechanism of VOCs decomposition in the plasma-catalysis process. Also, a comparison of the performance in various VOCs removal processes is provided. Particular emphasis is given to the importance of the selected catalyst and the synergy of plasma and catalyst in the VOCs removal in the hybrid system, which can be used as a reference point for future studies in this field.

Abstract:A combined adsorption-discharge plasma catalytic process was used for the removal of NO(x) using zeolites as catalysts without external heating. It was found that the types of plasma carrier gases exert great effect on the conversion of adsorbed NO(x). The conversion of adsorbed NO(x) is much lower in N(2) plasma than in Ar plasma, which is attributed to the reverse reaction, NO(x) formation reaction. The momentary increase of oxygen species derived from the decomposition of adsorbed NO(x) is considered to be the main cause as their collisions with nitrogen species can generate NO(x) again. Thus, solid carbon was added to the catalyst to act as a scavenger for active oxygen species to improve the conversion of adsorbed NO(x) in N(2) plasma. A NO(x) removal rate of 97.8% was obtained on 8.5wt.% carbon mixed H-ZSM-5 at an energy efficiency of 0.758 mmol NO(x)/W·h.

Abstract:Plasma-driven catalysis (PDC) was used to remove toluene in air. Water vapor is a critical operating parameter in this process. Its effect on toluene removal efficiency, carbon balance, CO(2) selectivity, and outlet O(3) concentration was systematically investigated. Results showed that water vapor imposed negative effect on toluene decomposition since it depressed the formation and catalytic decomposition of O(3). Water vapor deposited on the catalyst would cover the catalytic active sites, resulting in the deactivation of the catalyst. There was an optimum water vapor content for the highest carbon balance and CO(2) selectivity. The present paper sheds some insight into the effect of water vapor and provides a valuable basis for the application of the PDC technology.
