Abstract:Bi3+ doped Ca12Al14O32Cl2 series were successfully synthesized by conventional solid-state reaction method and their luminescence properties have been investigated in detail. Crystallographic parameters of the refinement structure with cubic space group I-43d were obtained by XRD refinement as a=12.0183(3)Å and V (cell volume)=1735.93(1)Å3. The resulting phosphors absorb ultraviolet (UV) light (240–400nm) and show a single intense broad emission band in the wavelength range of 400–600nm with maximum intensity at 483nm. The Commission Internationale de 1’Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates are about x=0.185, y=0.306. Thus, the novel light blue-emitting phosphor Ca12Al14O32Cl2:Bi3+ could be potentially applied in UV white light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:Using the solid-state reaction method, Ce3+,Tb3+-coactivated Si5AlON7 (Si6-zAlzOzN8-z, z=1) phosphors were successfully synthesized. The obtained phosphors exhibit high absorption and strong excitation bands in the wavelength range of 240-440nm, matching well with the light emitting-diode (LED) chip. The ET from Ce3+ to Tb3+ ions in Si5AlON7:Ce3+,Tb3+ has been studied and demonstrated by the luminescence spectra and decay curves. Moreover, the phosphors show tunable emissions from blue to green by tuning the relative ratio of the Ce3+ to Tb3+ ions. Thermal quenching properties of Si5AlON7:Ce3+,Tb3+ had also been investigated and the quenching temperature is similar to 190 degrees C. These results show that Si5AlON7:Ce3+,Tb3+ could be a promising candidate for a single-phased color-tunable phosphor applied in UV-chip pumped LEDs.

Abstract:Y3Al5O12:0.06Ce(3+), xMn(2+) (YAG:0.06Ce, xMn) phosphors have been synthesized and the effect of different charge compensators on the color adjustment has been investigated for the first time. The luminescence properties of Mn2+ singly doped and co-doped with Ce3+ into YAG host have been discussed. It is observed that in singly doped sample, Mn2+ ions not only occupy two kinds of Al3+ sites to generate a yellow and a deep red emission bands, but also occupy Y3+ sites to obtain a green emission band in YAG host. Considering Mn2+ substitution for Al3+, quadrivalence ions including Zr4+, Ge4+ and Si4+ ions are introduced to balance the charge difference. The results show that Si4+ as charge compensator exhibits the best tunable effect on controlling the Mn2+ emissions in YAG:0.06Ce, xMn. In Si4+-Mn2+ co-doped samples, the emission color can be tuned from greenish-yellow to red with increasing the content of Mn2+. Abstract:Nanorod-like Ca 5 (PO 4 ) 3 (OH): xEu 3+ , yTb 3+ (x + y = 12 mol%) phosphors with multicolor tunable emission were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. The structure, morphology and luminescent properties of samples were studied by XRD, EDS, FT-IR, SEM, TEM and PL. The luminescent results demonstrate the existence of energy transfer between Tb 3+ and Eu 3+ in the Tb 3+ , Eu 3+ co-doped sample, and the energy transfer mechanism from Tb 3+ to Eu 3+ in the phosphors were studied. When appropriately modulating the Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ doping concentration, various emission colors can be obtained and tuned from yellow-green, yellow, and orange to red through single excitation energy.

Abstract:A series of novel luminescent emission-tunable phosphors Mg2La8(SiO4)6O2:Ce3+,Tb3+ (MLS:Ce3+,Tb3+) have been prepared by a solid-state reaction. The phase formation was firstly confirmed through X-ray diffraction technique and refined by the Rietveld method. The MLS:Ce3+,Tb3+ phosphors, which crystallized in apatite-type hexagonal phase, exhibited a broad excitation band ranging from 200 to 400nm and several emission bands centered at 426nm and 551nm. Energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ ions via a dipole-dipole mechanism occurred in the as-synthesized phosphors upon ultraviolet (UV) excitation. The energy transfer efficiency increases with increasing doping content of Tb3+ ions, which was confirmed by the luminescence spectra and fluorescence decay curves of corresponding ions simultaneously. The energy transfer critical distance was calculated and evaluated by both the concentration quenching and spectral overlap methods. The chromaticity of emission-tunable phosphors was also characterized by the Commission International de l'éclairage (CIE) chromaticity indexes, and the color tone can be tuned from blue (0.179, 0.122) to green (0.267, 0.408) by controlling the ratio of Ce3+/Tb3+.

Abstract:Solid solution phosphors Gd3Ga2(Al3-ySiy)(O12-yNy):Ce3+ were synthesized by introducing [Si4+ + N3-]/[Al3+ + O2-] co-substitution into the lattice of Gd3Ga2Al3O12:Ce3+center dot Gd3Ga2Al3O12:Ce3+, characteristic as outstanding light yield (about 50-60 kPh/MeV), and has been applied in computer tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET) nuclear medical detector, et al. With the increase of y value, the coordination environment around Gd3+(Ce3+) shrinked, which were confirmed by combining techniques of structure refinement, energy-dispersive spectrum, elements distribution mapping. As a result, stronger 5d orbital nephelauxetic effect (epsilon(c)) and bigger 5d energy level splitting (epsilon(cfs)) were induced. Thus resulting in longer wavelength of excitation and emission from Ce3+, and broadening of emission spectra. The typical sample Gd2.95Ga2Al2.5Si0.5O11.5N0.5:0.05Ce(3+) (GGASON(0.5):Ce3+) exhibits sufficient red component and persistent luminescence(> 10 ms), enables fabrication of warm white light suited for alternating-current (AC) when combined with blue light chip (460 nm).

Abstract:Recently, the realization of spectrum-tunable single-phase phosphors has become the focus of phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs) research. Herein, a novel color-tunable Ca2GdHf2Al3O12 (CGHAO): Ce3+, Mn2+ single-phase phosphor was prepared. A thorough investigation was conducted into the crystal structure, site occupancy, morphology, luminescent characteristics, energy transfer (ET) process, and thermal quenching. These phosphors show broadband excitation between 200 and 460 nm matching commercially available near-ultraviolet LED chips (380 - 420 nm). The ratio of dopant ion concentration can be varied to achieve cyan-to-orange chromaticity adjustment due to the Ce3+ → Mn2+ effective ET. By confirming that the ET mechanism is controlled by dipole-quadrupole interaction with 42.64% efficiency. In particular, under excitation at 405 nm, the optimal sample CGHAO: 5%Ce3+, 15%Mn2+ emits bright yellow light with an IQE of 84.35%, and has good thermal (Ea = 0.271 eV) and chromatic stability (ΔE = 1.35 × 10-2 at 473K). Based on these findings, color-tunable CGHAO: Ce3+, Mn2+ phosphor could be considered potential candidates for pc-LEDs device applications.

Abstract:(Lu1-xMnx)(3)Al-2(Al1-xSix)(3)O-12: Ce3+ solid solution phosphors were synthesized via introducing the isostructural Mn3Al2(SiO4)(3) (MAS) into Lu3Al5O12: Ce3+ (LuAG). Moreover, (Lu1-x Mn-x)(3)Al-2(Al1-x Si-x)(3)O-12 : Ce3+ (x = 0-0.2) exhibits substantial spectra broadening (83 -> 115 nm) due to the 5d -> 4f transition of Ce3+ and the T-4(1) -> (6)A(1) transition of Mn2+, respectively. The efficiency of energy transfer (eta(tau), Ce3+ -> Mn2+) gradually increases with the rising Mn2+ content, and the value reach approximately 45% at x = 0.2. Namely, the different characteristics of luminescence evolution based on effect of structural variation substituting (MnSi)(6+) pair for the larger (LuAl)(6+) pair. Therefore, with the structural evolution, the luminescence of the solid solution phosphors could be tuned from green to orange-red tunable by increasing the content of MAS for the applications of general lighting.

Abstract:Red-emitting phosphors Ca9Al(PO4)(7):Ce3+,Mn2+ were synthesized by solid state reactions. The crystal structure and photoluminescence properties were investigated. The obtained phosphors exhibit a strong excitation band between 250 and 350 nm. Upon excitation of 314 nm, Ca9Al(PO4)(7):Ce3+,Mn2+ exhibits a broad red emission centered at 635 nm, originated from the T-4(1)((4)G) -> (6)A(1)(S-6) transition of Mn2+. The photoluminescence properties indicate that there is an efficient energy transfer from the Ce3+ to Mn2+ ions. The energy transfer has been studied and demonstrated to be a resonant type via a quadrupole-quadrupole mechanism. Furthermore, the critical distance of the Ce3+ and Mn2+ ions was calculated, and the effect of charge compensation with Li+, Na+ and K+ as the charge compensators was also studied. Abstract:YxAl5O12∶Ce3+ phosphors have been synthesized by co-precipitation method.The crystalline structure,morphology and luminescence properties of YxAl5O12∶Ce3+ phosphors have been investigated by X-ray diffraction(XRD),Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM) and fluorescence spectrophotometer.The results show that the emission wavelengths of as-prepared phosphors display red-shift at first and then blue-shift appears with the molar of Y3+ increasing from 2.64 to 3.06.The emission intensity increases slowly with the mole of Y3+ increasing from 2.64 to 2.88,but the intensity decreases sharply with different Y3+ content when it was beyond 2.94.The maximum emission wavelength(λem=537 nm) at the maximum intensity appears when x is 2.88.The impure phase-Al2O3 appears when the content of Y3+ is below 2.64.When the mole of Y3+exceeds 3.06,the impure phase-YAM appears,which has negative effects on the luminescence property of as-prepared phosphors.When the molar ratio of yttrium rises from 2.76 to 2.88,the powder is observed with high crystalline and easy dispersion.

Abstract:Inorganic phosphors with the broad excitation bands and efficient visible emission are important to fabricate lighting emitting diodes. Herein, we fabricated the Lu2MgAl4SiO12:Ce3+ and Ca substituted Lu2MgAl4SiO12:Ce3+ phosphors by a sol-gel approach. Their characteristics were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence spectrophotometer. The thermal stabilities of Lu1.95Ce0.05MgAl4SiO12 and Lu1.95Ce0.05Mg0.25Ca0.75Al4SiO12 were evaluated in the temperature rage of 30–230 °C. In addition, the mechanisms of concentration quenching and thermal stability were discussed. Upon the excitation at 435 nm, Lu2−xCexMgAl4SiO12 and Lu1.95Ce0.05Mg1−yCayAl4SiO12 phosphors show emission bands with changing peak wavelength by reason of the changing crystal field splitting with the changing Ce3+ and Ca2+ concentrations. Meanwhile, the substitution of Ca2+ to Mg2+ leads to the enhancements of thermal stability of luminescence.

Abstract:A novel blue-emitting apatite structure phosphate phosphor Sr5(PO4)2SiO4: Ce3+, Tb3+ has been synthesized by a high-temperature solid-state reaction. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electric microscopy (SEM), ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectra (UV–Vis DRS), photoluminescence excitation (PLE) and emission (PL) spectra were utilized to characterize the samples. The results showed that the Sr5(PO4)2SiO4: Ce3+, Tb3+ samples exhibit a wide and strong emission band located at 405 nm. In addition, the process of energy transfer (ET) from Ce3+ to Tb3+ has been proved to be a dipole-dipole interaction. Importantly, the color of the phosphor emission can be changed by proper tuning of the Ce3+/Tb3+ ratio. Therefore, the prepared phosphors exhibit great potential for applications in the fields of luminescence and display.

Abstract:A series of novel Ca2LaZr2Al3O12: xCe3+garnet phosphors were obtained by conventional high temperature solid-state reaction. Crystal structure, phase purity, micromorphology as well as luminescence properties are studied via X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscope and photoluminescence spectra including excitation and emission. Moreover, the mechanism of concentration quenching, thermal stability, fluorescent lifetime and quantum efficiency were investigated in detail. Under n-UV excitation, Ca2LaZr2Al3O12: Ce3+ exhibits a broadband of blue emission at 440 nm approximately for maximum, corresponding to 5d-4f transition of Ce3+. Emission can keep 41% of initial intensity when temperature is promoted to 373 K according to temperature-dependence emission spectra. The internal quantum efficiency of the optimal specimen is 15% and with Ce3+ increasing, the color of emission transfers to light from dark blue at CIE.
Luminescence Properties and Ce3+→Tb3+ Energy Transfer of Li2SrSiO4:Ce3+ ,Tb3+ Phosphor

Abstract:Li 2Sr 1-x-ySiO 4:xCe 3+, yTb 3+ phosphors with single Li 2EuSiO 4 phase structure were synthesized by high temperature solid state reaction. The fluorescence spectra showed that Ce 3+ doped Li 2SrSiO 4 phosphors emitted strong blue fluorescence with the exciting peak located at 360 nm, while Tb 3+ doped Li 2SrSiO 4 phosphors emitted strong green light with the exciting peak at 243 nm and no exciting peak exited in the range of 350~410 nm. A resonant energy transfer from Ce 3+ to Tb 3+ was observed and a wide exciting spectrum with peak at 360 nm appeared for Ce 3+ and Tb 3+ co-doped Li 2SrSiO 4. The bicolor of blue and green could be tuned by adjusting the relative content of Ce 3+ and Tb 3+. The bicolor phosphors have the potential application for white LEDs based on UV/NUV chip.

Abstract:To investigate the energy transfers and tunable luminescence, Eu2+/Ce3+/Mn2+-doped Y2Mg2Al2Si2O12 phosphors were synthesized by sintering at a temperature of 1400 °C. The phase and luminescence characteristics were investigated subsequently. The XRD results indicate that the synthesized phosphors have the pure phase and garnet structure. Eu2+/Ce3+-, Eu2+/Mn2+- and Eu2+/Ce3+/Mn2+-doped phosphors show tunable luminescence because of the energy transfer processes from Eu2+ to Ce3+ and Mn2+. White lights with different correlated color temperatures are generated by the synthesized phosphors. The dependence of the emission intensity on temperature shows that the thermal quenching temperature of the Y1.955Eu0.030Ce0·015Mg1·985Mn0·015Al2Si2O12 phosphor is higher than 175 °C. Our results demonstrate that the synthesized phosphors can be applied to near-ultraviolet LED chip-excited white-light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:A series of Si-N or Eu-Li doped CeAl11O18 and CeAl12O18N phosphors are prepared by solid-state reaction. Their structure and luminescence are researched carefully. Si-N doping with the concentration less than 8% can be successfully dissolved into CeAl11O18 crystal lattice and doesn't change the matrix structure, only resulting in crystal lattice shrinkage due to the shorter bond length for Si-N bond versus Al-O bond. It is observed that blue emission gradually decreases and UV emission becomes stronger due to the gradual disappearance of O-Me ions with the increase of Si-N doping. Compared with the traditional UV emitting phosphor CeMgAl11O19, Si-N doped CeAl11O18 shows better thermal stability. The crystal structure and lattice parameters of Eu-Li codoped CeAl11O18 remain unchanged due to the large tolerance of rare-earth sites. On account of the energy transfer from UV emission of Ce3+ to Eu2+, a single overlapping blue emission with high intensity is obtained in Eu-Li codoped CeAl11O18 phosphor. Abstract:A novel color tunable phosphor was developed by a high-temperature solid-state reaction route with apatite-type Ca8NaGd(PO4)6F2 (CNGF) as matrix for the doping with Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions. The crystal structures were studied by XRD and Rietveld refinement, which clarified the structural parameters and the occupation of doped ions in crystal lattice. The luminescent intensity of Tb3+ ions was significantly improved by the energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ ions. According to the luminescence spectra and fluorescence decay curves of CNGF: Ce3+, Tb3+, a possible energy transfer mechanism was proposed. Fluorescent paper was prepared by binding the CNGF: Ce3+, Tb3+ phosphor particles with bacterial cellulose, and the morphology and luminescence properties of the paper were investigated. These results demonstrate that the obtained CNGF: Ce3+, Tb3+ is a promising green phosphor candidate for solid-state lighting and anti-counterfeiting applications.

Abstract:A series of apatite solid solution phosphors Ca2+xLa8-x(SiO4)(6-x)(PO4)(x)O-2: Eu2+ (x = 0,2,4,6) were synthesized by a conventional high-temperature solid-state reaction. The phase purity was examined using XRD, XPS and XRF. The crystal structure information, such as the concentration, cell parameters and occupation rate, was analyzed using a Rietveld refinement, demonstrating that the Eu2+ activated the Ca2La8(SiO4)(6)O-2 and Ca8La2(PO4)(6)O-2 to form continuous solid solution phosphors. Different behaviors of luminescence evolution in response to structural variation were verified among the series of phosphors. Two kinds of Eu2+ ion sites were proved using low temperature PL spectra (8k) and room temperature decay curves. The substitution of large La3+ ions by small Ca2+ ions induced a decreased crystal field splitting of the Eu2+ ions, which caused an increase in emission energy from the 5d excited state to the 4f ground state and a resultant blue-shift from 508 nm to 460 nm. Therefore, with the crystal structure evolution, the emitted color of the series of phosphors could be tuned from green to blue by adjusting the ratio of Ca/La.
