Abstract:Here, we reported for the first time a mechanistically distinctive cobalt-catalyzed Markovnikov-type sequential semihydrogenation/hydrohydrazidation of aliphatic terminal alkynes in one pot. A cobalt hydride species was employed as two roles for both a unique metal-catalyzed Markovnikov-type insertion of the aliphatic terminal alkynes and then metal-catalyzed hydrogen atom transfer of alkenes. This operationally simple protocol exhibits excellent functional group tolerance and step economy. The hydrazone products could be easily transferred to various valuable amine derivatives.

Abstract:Here, we reported a cobalt-hydride-catalyzed Markovnikov-type hydroallylation of terminal alkynes with allylic electrophile to access valuable and branched skipped dienes (1,4-dienes) with good regioselectivity. This operationally simple protocol exhibits excellent functional group tolerance and exceptional substrate scope. The reactions could be carried out in gram-scale with TON (turn over number) up to 1160, and the products could be easily derivatized. The preliminary mechanism of electrophilic allylation of α-selective cobalt alkenyl intermediate was proposed based on deuterium labeling experiment and kinetic studies.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed the growing interest in the remote functionalization of alkenes for it offers a strategy to activate the challenging C-H bonds distant from the initiation point via alkene isomerization/functionalization. However, the catalytic enantioselective isomerization/functionalization with one single transition metal catalyst remains rare. Here we report a highly regio- and enantioselective cobalt-catalyzed remote C-H bond borylation of internal alkenes via sequential alkene isomerization/hydroboration. A chiral ligand featured twisted pincer, anionic, and non-rigid characters is designed and used for this transformation. This methodology, which is operationally simple using low catalyst loading without additional activator, shows excellent enantioselectivity and can be used to convert various internal alkenes with regio- and stereoisomers to valuable chiral secondary organoboronates with good functional group tolerance.

Abstract:A Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed annulative carbooxygenation of challenging 1,1-disubstituted alkenes triggered by C-H activation of N-aryloxyacetamides has been established, which affords 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives with a quaternary carbon center in good to excellent yields under mild redox-neutral conditions. An amide group on the alkenes is essential for the process, and may inhibit the beta-H elimination from C(sp3)-Rh species by saturating the rhodium center through coordination. Furthermore, mechanistic insights obtained from control experiments suggest a mechanism involving a Rh-III-Rh-V-Rh-III catalytic cycle.

Abstract:Alkene hydrocarbofunctionalization represents one of the most important classes of chemical transformations, but related branched-selective examples with unactivated olefins are scarce. Here, we report that catalytic amounts of a dimeric Ni(I) complex and an exogenous alkoxide base promote Markovnikov-selective hydroarylation(alkenylation) of unactivated and activated olefins using organo bromides or triflates derived from widely available phenols and ketones. Products bearing aryl- and alkenyl-substituted tertiary and quaternary centers could be isolated in up to 95% yield and >99:1 regioisomeric ratios. Contrary to previous dual-catalytic methods that rely on metal-hydride atom transfer (MHAT) to the olefin prior to carbofunctionalization with a cocatalyst, our mechanistic evidence points toward a nonradical reaction pathway that begins with site-selective carbonickelation across the C═C bond followed by hydride transfer using alkoxide as the hydride source. Abstract:A highly chemo-, regio- and stereoselective cobalt-catalyzed Markovnikov hydrosilylation of alkynes was developed. Various functionalized groups, such as halides, free alcohols, free aniline, ketones, esters, amides, and nitriles are tolerated, which may lead to further applications and late-stage derivatizations. To date, this is the most efficient cobalt catalytic system (TOF=65520h(-1); TOF=turnover frequency) for hydrosilylation of alkynes. The Hiyama-Denmark cross-coupling reactions of vinylsilanes with aryl iodides underwent smoothly to afford 1,1-diarylethenes. A unique regioselectivity-controllable hydrosilylation/hydroboration reaction of alkynes was also described.

Abstract:The hydroalkylation reaction of olefins with alkanes is a highly desirable synthetic transformation for the construction of C(sp3)-C(sp3) bonds. However, such transformation has proven to be challenging for unactivated olefins, particularly when the substrates are lack of directing groups or acidic C(sp3)-H bonds. Herein, we address this challenge by merging NiH-catalyzed radical relay strategy with a HAT (hydrogen atom transfer) process. In this catalytic system, a nucleophilic alkyl radical is generated from a C(sp3)-H compound in the presence of a HAT promotor, which couples with an alkyl metallic intermediate generated from the olefin substrate with a NiH catalyst to form the C(sp3)-C(sp3) bond. Notably, this approach represents the first case of transition-metal hydride-catalyzed hydroalkylation of unactivated olefins by employing C(sp3)-H compounds as the alkyl sources. Starting from easily available materials, the reaction not only demonstrates wide func-tional group compatibility but also provides hydroalkylation products with regiodivergency and excellent enantioselectivity through effective catalyst control under mild conditions.

Abstract:In metal hydride-catalyzed alkene hydrofunctionalization reactions via hydrogen atom transfer, simple carbonyl groups have been well-recognized as good somophiles at the carbon for C-C bond formation. Here we report an alternative pathway exploring the carbonyl as an O-nucleophile to make new C-O bonds during the CoH-catalyzed oxidative cyclization of alkenyl aldehydes. This reaction provides a rapid, mild, modular, and stereoselective (up to >20:1) entry to saturated O-heterocycles via nucleophilic trapping of an in situ-formed oxocarbenium intermediate. The key to overriding the carbonyl's innate somophilicity was found to be promoting the formation of organocobalt species and suppressing the radical exchange.

Abstract:Alkene hydroalkylation enables efficient and selective formation of C(sp3)-C(sp3) bonds with unique advantages, such as exceptional chemoselectivity and remarkable tolerance of functional groups. However, eliminating the heteroatom-containing substrate-specific constraints in achieving precise enantioselectivity remains a challenge in alkene hydroalkylation reactions. Here we report the cobalt-hydride-catalysed enantioselective hydroalkylation of 1,1-disubstituted alkenes, enabling the efficient construction of chiral tertiary carbon centres at the benzyl position. The enantioselective control mode does not rely on Lewis basic or polar heteroatom functional groups; instead, an efficient stereochemical control environment is established between substrates and catalysts through weak C-Hpi interactions in the alkene hydrometalation step. This work adds a differentiated case to the Giese-type addition reaction and metal-hydride-catalysed alkene hydroalkylation precedents towards breaking substrate-specific constraints in the enantioselective control mode. Eliminating the substrate-specific constraints in alkene hydroalkylation reactions, where heteroatom-containing substrates are often required to achieve enantioselectivity, remains a challenge. Now a cobalt-hydride catalyst is shown to overcome heteroatom constraints through C-Hpi interactions between substrates and catalysts, enabling the efficient construction of chiral tertiary carbon centres at the benzyl position.

Abstract:Homogeneous catalytic hydrogenation of carbonyl groups is a synthetically useful and widely applied organic transformation. Sustainable chemistry goals require replacing conventional noble transition metal catalysts for hydrogenation by earth-abundant base metals. Herein, we report how a practical in situ catalytic system generated by easily available pincer NHC precursors, CoCl2, and a base enabled efficient and high-yielding hydrogenation of a broad range of ketones and aldehydes (over 50 examples and a maximum turnover number [TON] of 2,610). This is the first example of NHC-Co-catalyzed hydrogenation of C=O bonds using flexible pincer NHC ligands consisting of a N-H substructure. Diastereodivergent hydrogenation of substituted cyclohexanone derivatives was also realized by fine-tuning of the steric bulk of pincer NHC ligands. Additionally, a bis(NHCs)-Co complex was successfully isolated and fully characterized, and it exhibits excellent catalytic activity that equals that of the in-situ-formed catalytic system.

Abstract:Tandem hydroformylation/hydrogenation of olefins to alcohols is an appealing and challenging route that has received continuous interest. Herein, we report a bifunctional atomically dispersed Rh and Co catalyst（Rh Co/Al 2 O 3 -10） prepared by a simple ball milling method that displays superior synergistic catalytic performance（>95% olefins conversion and >80% alcohols selectivity） and broad substrate scope for tandem hydroformylation/hydrogenation reaction, outperforming Rh/Al 2 O 3 , Co/Al 2 O 3 ,and their physically mixed counterparts. In situ CO-DRIFTS, XPS, and kinetic experiments demonstrate that the electron interaction between Rh and Co atoms effectively lowers the apparent activation energy, thus promoting the tandem hydroformylation/hydrogenation reaction. This work not only presents a novel tandem hydroformylation/hydrogenation reaction system for converting olefins to alcohol but also throws light on the rational design of versatile bifunctional catalysts for ondemand synergistic catalysis.

Abstract:Snipping tool: the rhodium(I)-catalyzed extrusion of carbon monoxide from biaryl ketones and alkyl/alkenyl aryl ketones was developed to produce biaryls and alkyl/alkenyl arenes, respectively, in high yields. A wide range of functionalities are tolerated. Not only does this method provide an alternative pathway to construct useful scaffolds, but also offers a new strategy for C-C bond activation.

Abstract:Enantioselective hydroarylation of unactivated terminal akenes constitutes a prominent challenge in organic chemistry. Herein, we reported a Cp*Co(III)-catalyzed asymmetric hydroarylation of unactivated aliphatic terminal alkenes assisted by a new type of tailor-made amino acid ligands. Critical to the chiral induction was the engaging of a novel noncovalent interaction (NCI), which has seldomly been disclosed in the C-H activation area, arising from the molecular recognition among the organocobalt(III) intermediate, the coordinated alkene, and the well-designed chiral ligand. A broad range of C2-alkylated indoles were obtained in high yields and excellent enantioselectivities. DFT calculations revealed the reaction mechanism and elucidated the origins of chiral induction in the stereodetermining alkene insertion step.

Abstract:Catalyst innovation lies at the heart of transition-metal-catalyzed reaction development. In this article, we have explored the C(sp 2 )—H alkenylation activity with novel spirocyclic N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-based cyclometalated ruthenium pincer catalyst system, SNRu-X . After screening catalyst and condition, a high valent Ru(IV) dioxide (X = O 2 ) species has demonstrated superior reactivity in the catalytic alkenylation of aromatic and olefinic C-H bonds with unactivated alkenyl bromides and triflates. This reaction has achieved the easy construction of a wide range of (hetero)aromatic alkenes and dienes, in good to excellent yields with exclusive selectivity. Preliminary mechanistic studies indicate that this reaction may proceed through a single electron transfer (SET) triggered oxidative addition, by doing so, providing valuable complementary to classical alke-nylation reactions that are dependent on activated alkenyl precursors.

Abstract:Metal-hydride-catalyzed alkene hydroalkylation has been developed as an efficient method for C(sp3)-C(sp3) coupling with broad substrate availability and high functional group compatibility. However, auxiliary groups, a conjugated group or a chelation-directing group, are commonly required to attain high regio- and enantioselectivities. Herein, we reported a ligand-controlled cobalt-hydride-catalyzed regio-, enantio-, and diastereoselective oxyheterocyclic alkene hydroalkylation without chelation-directing groups. This reaction enables the hydroalkylation of conjugated and unconjugated oxyheterocyclic alkenes to deliver C2- or C3-alkylated tetrahydrofuran or tetrahydropyran in uniformly good yields and with high regio- and enantioselectivities. In addition, hydroalkylation of C2-substituted 2,5-dihydrofuran resulted in the simultaneous construction of 1,3-distereocenters, providing convenient access to polysubstituted tetrahydrofuran with multiple enantioenriched C(sp3) centers.
