Abstract:Here, we reported for the first time a mechanistically distinctive cobalt-catalyzed Markovnikov-type sequential semihydrogenation/hydrohydrazidation of aliphatic terminal alkynes in one pot. A cobalt hydride species was employed as two roles for both a unique metal-catalyzed Markovnikov-type insertion of the aliphatic terminal alkynes and then metal-catalyzed hydrogen atom transfer of alkenes. This operationally simple protocol exhibits excellent functional group tolerance and step economy. The hydrazone products could be easily transferred to various valuable amine derivatives.

Abstract:An efficient Co-catalyzed hydro-difluoromethylthiolation/hydro-trifluoromethylthiolation reaction of unactivated alkenes was described. Both reactions were conducted at room temperature and a variety of common functional groups such as halogen, ester, aldehyde, enolizable ketone or ester, nitro or cyano group, sulfonate and carbamate were compatible with the reaction conditions. Radical cyclization and radical inhibitor experiments suggested that the reaction proceeds through a free radical process.

Abstract:Here, we reported a cobalt-hydride-catalyzed Markovnikov-type hydroallylation of terminal alkynes with allylic electrophile to access valuable and branched skipped dienes (1,4-dienes) with good regioselectivity. This operationally simple protocol exhibits excellent functional group tolerance and exceptional substrate scope. The reactions could be carried out in gram-scale with TON (turn over number) up to 1160, and the products could be easily derivatized. The preliminary mechanism of electrophilic allylation of α-selective cobalt alkenyl intermediate was proposed based on deuterium labeling experiment and kinetic studies.

Abstract:A highly regio- and enantioselective cobalt-catalyzed hydroboration/hydrogenation of internal alkynes with HBpin and a hydrogen balloon in one pot was developed. A new type of chiral imidazoline iminopyridine (IIP) ligand was introduced for the first time in this novel and efficient strategy. This protocol used relatively simple and available starting materials with good functional group tolerance to construct more valuable chiral secondary organoboronates. The primary mechanistic studies illustrated that the cobalt-catalyzed regioselective hydroboration of alkynes did initially occur followed by HBpin-promoted and cobalt-catalyzed enantioselective hydrogenation of alkenylboronates.

Abstract:The hydroalkylation reaction of olefins with alkanes is a highly desirable synthetic transformation for the construction of C(sp3)-C(sp3) bonds. However, such transformation has proven to be challenging for unactivated olefins, particularly when the substrates are lack of directing groups or acidic C(sp3)-H bonds. Herein, we address this challenge by merging NiH-catalyzed radical relay strategy with a HAT (hydrogen atom transfer) process. In this catalytic system, a nucleophilic alkyl radical is generated from a C(sp3)-H compound in the presence of a HAT promotor, which couples with an alkyl metallic intermediate generated from the olefin substrate with a NiH catalyst to form the C(sp3)-C(sp3) bond. Notably, this approach represents the first case of transition-metal hydride-catalyzed hydroalkylation of unactivated olefins by employing C(sp3)-H compounds as the alkyl sources. Starting from easily available materials, the reaction not only demonstrates wide func-tional group compatibility but also provides hydroalkylation products with regiodivergency and excellent enantioselectivity through effective catalyst control under mild conditions.

Abstract:A functional group tolerant cobalt-catalyzed method for the intermolecular hydrofunctionalization of alkenes with oxygen- and nitrogen-based nucleophiles is reported. This protocol features a strategic use of hypervalent iodine(III) reagents that enables a mechanistic shift from conventional cobalt-hydride catalysis. Key evidence was found supporting a unique bimetallic-mediated rate-limiting step involving two distinct cobalt(III) species, from which a new carbon-heteroatom bond is formed.

Abstract:An asymmetric intermolecular, three-component radical-initiated dicarbofunctionalization of 1,1-diarylalkenes with diverse carbon-centered radical precursors and electron-rich heteroaromatics by a copper(I) and chiral phosphoric acid cooperative catalysis strategy has been developed, providing straightforward access to chiral triarylmethanes bearing quaternary all-carbon stereocenters with high efficiency as well as excellent chemo- and enantioselectivity. The key to success is not only the introduction of a sterically demanding chiral phosphoric acid to favor radical difunctionalization over the otherwise remarkable side reactions but also the in situ generation of carbocation intermediates from benzylic radical to realize asymmetric induction with the aid of a removable hydroxy directing group via cooperative interactions with chiral phosphate. Density functional theory calculations elucidated the critical chiral environment created by the hydrogen-bonding and ion-pair interactions between the chiral phosphoric acid catalyst and substrates, which leads to the enantioselective C-C bond formation.

Abstract:Highly regio- and enantioselective intermolecular hydroamination of alkenes is a challenging process potentially leading to valuable chiral amines. Hydroamination of alkenes via metal-catalyzed hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) with good regioselectivity and functional group tolerance has been reported, however, high enantioselectivity has not been achieved due to the lack of suitable ligands. Here we report a ligand-promoted cobalt-catalyzed Markovnikov-type selective radical hydroamination of alkenes with diazo compounds. This operationally simple protocol uses unsymmetric NNN-tridentate (UNT) ligand, readily available alkenes and hydrosilanes to construct hydrazones with good functional group tolerance. The hydrazones can undergo nitrogen-nitrogen bond cleavage smoothly to deliver valuable amine derivatives. Additionally, asymmetric intermolecular hydroamination of unactivated aliphatic terminal alkenes using chiral N-imidazolinylphenyl 8-aminoquinoline (IPAQ) ligands has also been achieved to afford chiral amine derivatives with good enantioselectivities.
Photocatalytic Metal Hydride Hydrogen Atom Transfer Mediated Allene Functionalization by Cobalt and Titanium Dual Catalysis.

Abstract:Catalytic metal hydride hydrogen atom transfer (MHAT) reactions have proven to be a powerful method for alkene functionalization. This work reports the discovery of Co-porphines as highly efficient MHAT catalysts with a loading of only 0.01 mol % for unprecedented chemoselective allene functionalization under photoirradiation. Moreover, the newly developed bimetallic strategy by the combination of photo Co-MHAT and Ti catalysis enabled the successful carbonyl allylation with a wide range of amino, oxy, thio, aryl, and alkyl-allenes providing expedient access to valuable β-functionalized homoallylic alcohols in over 100 examples with exceptional regio- and diastereoselectivity. Mechanism studies and DFT calculations supported that selectively transferring hydrogen atoms from cobalt hydride to allenes and generating allyl radicals is the key step in the catalytic cycle.

Abstract:An intermolecular 1,2-diacylation of alkenes is disclosed via cooperative N-heterocyclic carbene and photoredox catalysis under the mediation of PPh3 and Cs2CO3. This protocol provides a practical approach for construction of 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds toward novel diketone and pharmaceutical derivatives. Furthermore, the regioselective dicarbonyl compounds can be synthesized by adding acyl azolium salt. Mechanistic investigations suggest that the process was a critical radical/radical cross coupling of ketyl radicals with benzylic C-radicals.

Abstract:The metal‐hydride hydrogen atom transfer (MHAT) method is widely recognized as a powerful technique for functionalizing alkenes. However, its application in the functionalization of industrial feedstock dienes and allenes is relatively rare due to challenges related to chemo‐selectivity. In recent studies, Co‐porphines have been identified as highly efficient catalysts under photoirradiation for MHAT, demonstrating an exceptional level of chemoselectivity for the functionalization of dienes and allenes, while disregarding other simple olefins present. This novel method enables the selective reductive coupling of pyridines with dienes and the allylation of aldehydes by the combination with Ti catalysis. Mechanistic studies and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations support the idea that the non‐reversible transfer of hydrogen atoms from cobalt hydride to dienes and allenes, leading to the generation of allyl radicals, is the key step in the catalytic cycle.

Abstract:Although strategies of olefin hydroalkylation continue to emerge rapidly, the precise control of the regio- or chemoselectivity and the expansion of the reaction range are still challenges. Herein, a straightforward route for cobalt-catalyzed anti-Markovnikov hydroalkylation of unactivated olefins with alkyl iodides has been achieved. The developed reaction is compatible with oxa-, aza-, cyclo- and a series of other functional groups as well as the frameworks of some bioactive compounds. Mechanism studies confirm that an alkyl radical is involved and cobalt-alkyl insertion followed by protonation with water are possible pathways in this reaction.

Abstract:The renaissance of catalytic hydrogen atom transfer from a metal hydride (MHAT) offers advanced tools for practicing sophisticated radical chemistry on simple olefins. While 3d transition metals like cobalt, iron, and manganese have been extensively studied in catalytic MHAT, the potential of copper remains unexplored. This is due to the polar reactivity exhibited by classical nucleophilic Cu(I) hydrides. Here we report the first examples of catalytic hydrofunctionalization reactions enabled by copper-mediated MHAT. The Cu-MHAT process produces alkyl radicals in high chemo- and regioselectivity, which are subsequently captured by Cu(II) species to undergo coupling reactions with an exceptionally broad scope of oxygen-, nitrogen-, halogen-, and carbon-based nucleophiles. The distinct reactivity and selectivity observed in Cu-MHAT system is attributed to the involvement of Cu(II)–H species, a hydrogen atom donor that possesses substantially altered charge distribution and weakened bonding in contrast to conventional Cu(I) hydrides. Preliminary results suggest potential extension to asymmetric catalysis and radical polymerization are viable. This work opens up new opportunities for MHAT chemistry by going beyond the common oxidation states.

Abstract:The direct functionalization of remote C(sp 3 )–H is valuable but challenging, and is even more difficult to achieve than the γ-C(sp 3 )–H functionalization of alcohols. Among the strategies, hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) is one of the solutions for such transformations. Herein, we designed a migration reaction involving carbon monoxide, forming an alkoxy radical by photocatalysis, and used carbon monoxide to extend the carbon chain to provide a site for the migration of heteroaryl groups, which makes 1,4-HAT more advantageous, and we relied on this strategy to successfully achieve the synthesis of 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds by γ-C(sp 3 ) functionalization of alcohols.

Abstract:Methods toward the dimerization and homocoupling of terminal alkynes have been established that employ Co complexes along with tBuOK under different atmosphere. A variety of Z-1,3-enynes were furnished with a high Z:E (up to 93:7) ratio in moderate to very good yields under inert atmosphere. Alternatively, the Glaser homocoupling reaction of terminal alkynes was also accomplished with a Co catalyst, successfully affording various 1,3-diynes in excellent yields (up to 93%) under oxygen.

Abstract:In metal hydride-catalyzed alkene hydrofunctionalization reactions via hydrogen atom transfer, simple carbonyl groups have been well-recognized as good somophiles at the carbon for C-C bond formation. Here we report an alternative pathway exploring the carbonyl as an O-nucleophile to make new C-O bonds during the CoH-catalyzed oxidative cyclization of alkenyl aldehydes. This reaction provides a rapid, mild, modular, and stereoselective (up to >20:1) entry to saturated O-heterocycles via nucleophilic trapping of an in situ-formed oxocarbenium intermediate. The key to overriding the carbonyl's innate somophilicity was found to be promoting the formation of organocobalt species and suppressing the radical exchange.

Abstract:Cyclopropene hydrofunctionalization has been a promising strategy for accessing multi-substituted cyclopropanes; however, cyclopropene hydroalkylation remains underdeveloped. Herein, we report a low-valent CoH-catalyzed facial-selective cyclopropene hydroalkylation to access multi-substituted cyclopropanes. This reaction exhibits a broad substrate scope of alkyl halides and cyclopropenes and tolerates many functional groups. Moderate-to-good facial-selectivity is obtained without any directing groups. Mechanism studies provide evidence that alkyl radicals are generated from alkyl halides and irreversible CoH insertion is responsible for the facial-selectivity. Our preliminary exploration demonstrates that asymmetric cyclopropene hydroalkylation can be realized without conspicuous auxiliary groups.
