Abstract:The joint distributed fast polarization scramblers (D-FPSs) and forward error correction (FEC) is one of methods used to mitigate polarization mode dispersion (PMD). The distribution pattern of FPSs, which indicates how the FPSs are deployed along the fiber link, is a significant factor for this PMD mitigation scheme. The performance of the bit error rate (BER) for the case with or without FPSs is investigated by simulations. Five different distribution patterns of FPSs along the fiber link are designed in this paper, and the performance for each pattern is depicted by a novel representation that is known as the “Ring Chart.” The results show that the property of PMD mitigation varies with different distribution patterns of FPSs.

Abstract:In this study, we designed and fabricated a cable accommodating 4-core and 7-core multicore fibers (MCFs). Fiber characteristics including attenuation, dispersion and polarization mode dispersion (PMD) during the cabling procedure were measured and analyzed. We observed a significant degradation in PMD for MCFs, particularly for those outer cores proximate to the cladding. Thus it requires longer taps of MIMO equalizers to sufficiently equalize at the receiver for reliable communications at the subsea distance. To assess the PMD impact on outage performance with limitations of MIMO equalizers’ taps, we developed a C-band 8000-km submarine transmission model which was calibrated with measured parameters during cabling, for qualifying 4- and 7-core MCFs in practical use. Simulations performed on the calibrated model could predict the outage performance for ensuring the communication reliability. More than 2-dB SNR margin is required to prevent the PMD-induced outage with using 300-taps MIMO equalizer at the receiver. Based on these comprehensive tests and simulations, we emphasize the importance of carefully managing PMD and ensuring adequate system SNR margins during the practical cabling and deployment of optical MCFs submarine cables.

Abstract:In this work, the coding gain and transmission penalty of the standard forward error correction (FEC) are investigated in the 40 Gbit/s systems with high polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and prechirped carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (CS-RZ) format. The simulation results show that the interaction of the second-order and higher-order PMD with fiber nonlinearity induced chirp can improve the performance of FEC.

Abstract:In this paper, we numerically evaluate the performance of 10 Gbit/s systems with a novel adjustable first-order polarization mode dispersion (PMD) compensator and forward error correction (FEC). The scheme of PMD compensation employs sampled fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) written into a high-birefringence fiber using uniform phase masks. And the technique of FEC is based on the concatenated Reed–Solomon codes of RS(247,239)+RS(255,247), which is also called enhanced FEC (EFEC). The numerical simulation results show that the combined use of PMD compensation and EFEC can increase system PMD tolerance to one bit period of average PMD when keeping the sensitivity penalty (@BER=10−10) below 1 dB.

Abstract:This paper numerically compares the performance of 10-Gbit/s standard forward error correction (SFEC) and enhanced forward error correction (EFEC) in coded systems disturbed by high polarization mode dispersion (PMD). The simulation results show that EFEC, based on the concatenated Reed-Solomon codes RS(247, 239) and RS(255, 247), can increase the system PMD tolerance to 70 ps, compared with about 40 ps for SFEC, while keeping the PMD-induced power penalty (at a bit error rate of 10(-10)) below 1 dB. Abstract:The generation of different modulation formats and their polarization dispersion compensation(PMD)performance have been studied.Firstly,the eye diagrams and spectrum of different modulation formats through experiment have been obtained,and then the dynamic combination of their mitigation and compensation in PMD have been accomplished.Secondly,the PMD compensation performance with degree of bolarization(DOP)as feedback signal of the mentioned modulation formats has been studied via simulation.It shows that DOP responsibility and PMD compensation performance of differential phase-shift key(DPSK)are better than that of on-off keying(OOK).CSRZDPSK combines the carrier-suppressed characteristic of CSRZ formats and specific spectrum characteristic of DPSK formats,therefore it has the best PMD compensation performance.

Abstract:We investigate polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and polarization dependent loss (PDL) impairments in polarization division multiplexing (PDM) signals with optical polarization demultiplexing and direct detection. We find that the time alignment between the bits in the two polarizations has a significant impact on the PMD impairments, and PMD impairments also depend on the bandwidth of PDM signals, whereas PDL impairments have little dependence on the relative time alignment between the two polarizations and the signal bandwidth. We show that with a proper configuration of the polarization demultiplexing, the PDL-induced crosstalk between the two polarizations can be completely eliminated. The combined effects of PMD and PDL are also studied, and we find that, in the presence of concatenated PMD and PDL, the impairment from one effect does not enhance that from the other. Abstract:In-line synchronous modulation as a way of mitigating the signal quality degradation induced by polar ization mode dispersion(PMD)was experimentally studied using 10-Gb/s return to zero signal.Bit error rate of the degraded signal and the synchronously modulated signal under the differential group delay(DGD)values of 10,20,34,and 70 ps was measured and compared.The experimental results showed that in-line synchronous modulation is useful to mitigate the signal quality degeneration induced by PMD.1-dB power penalty reduction was obtained even when the PMD was as high as 70％ of the bit interval.The limitation of method is also discussed.

Abstract:We experimentally quantify the tolerance of the polarization misalignment induced crosstalk for OOK/OOK, OOK/DPSK, and DPSK/DPSK polarization division multiplexing schemes. The results show that the DPSK signal in OOK/DPSK PDM exhibits higher tolerance. Introduction Polarization-division multiplexing (PDM) is a bandwidthefficient technique suitable for upgrading bandwidthlimited trunk lines. One of the main obstacles impeding the practical implementation of the PDM is polarization crosstalk, which is due to the imperfect demultiplexing, e.g., the misalignment of the polarizer or polarization beam splitter (PBS) [1]. In the presence of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) [2], such polarization crosstalk will be more serious. In this paper, we experimentally compare the tolerance for PDM systems with different data modulation formats, on-off keying (OOK) or differential phase-shiftkeying (DPSK), on each multiplexed data channel. The experimental results showed that the DPSK signal in OOK/DPSK PDM exhibited higher tolerance in terms of the tolerance of polarization crosstalk, while all of them have similar performance. Abstract:We demonstrate a 10-Gb/s polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) compensation experiment by using a 4-degree of freedom compensator for both NRZ and RZ formats. The particle swarm optimization method is used as the searching algorithm and an adaptive dithering algorithm is employed in tracking process. The results show that the searching process is finished within several hundreds of milliseconds and the response time for the compensator to recover from a sudden disturbance is less than 20 ms.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate polarization demultiplexing, frequency offset and phase noise compensation using an electrically inserted pilot for 28 Gbaud PDM-QPSK. We report excellent back-to-back and transmission performances, frequency offset and phase noise tolerances.

Abstract:Compensating dynamically changing polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) is important for optical fiber transmission systems. We present simulations of a Viterbi equalization for dynamic PMD mitigation in 10-Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero differential phase-shift keying systems. Abstract:An experiment of adaptive polarization mode dispersion (PMD) compensation for 40-Gb/s return-to-zero (RZ) optical communication system is reported. In the experiment, degree of polarization (DOP) is used as feedback signal and particle swarm optimization (PSO) method is adopted as logic control algorithm. The compensation time is about 200 ms, the compensated differential group delay (DGD) is up to 30 ps, and bit error rate (BER) of 10^(-9) is reached when PMD compensation is employed.

Abstract:Forward error correction (FEC) codes are usually combined with continuous phase modulation (CPM) in order to achieve higher performance gains, which is known as serially concatenated CPM (SCCPM) schemes. In this paper, a new serially concatenated scheme of polar coded CPM is proposed to improve the reliability of wireless communications over burst-error channels. In order to resist the burst interference, an improved iterative algorithm is proposed, which consists of a BCJR algorithm for CPM demodulation and a combined successive cancellation list and belief propagation (SCL-BP) for polar decoder. Simulation results show that the block error rate (BLER) performance of the proposed scheme is significantly better than Turbo coded CPM systems.
