Abstract:A four-channel integrated optical add/drop multiplexer is experimentally demonstrated on a silicon-on-insulator substrate. With the help of a parent-sub microring resonator structure, compact footprint, large free spectral range, and uniform channel spacing are achieved simultaneously. Through controlling the resonance matching between the parent and sub-rings through thermo-optic effect, each channel can be switched independently between the states of dropping and passing through. The thermal tuning efficiency is as high as 0.27 nm/mW. Typically, for dropping state, all four channels can be de-multiplexed to the drop ports with 2 dB drop loss, 18 dB through port extinction, and less than -20 dB channel crosstalk.

Abstract:We propose a nonreciprocal optical add-drop multiplexer with silicon waveguide, which is realized by grating assisted coupler employing magneto-optical nonceciprocal phase shift. This device can achieve different adding or dropping peak wavelengths when light is launched in the forward-directed and backward-directed propagation. The calculation results show that the shift of the different dropping peak wavelengths is up to 0.7nm. Also, we demonstrate its applications for narrowband optical isolators and circulators. This work demonstrates that on-chip nonreciprocal optical add-drop multiplexers and optical isolations can be implemented with the proposed device, which has promising applications for optical communication systems and photonic integrated devices.

Abstract:An eight-channel integrated optical add-drop multiplexer with cascaded parentsub microring resonators is experimentally demonstrated on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate. Through thermal tuning, each channel can be independently switched between the adding and dropping states. The measured thermal tuning efficiency is 0.15 nm/mW. Typically, all eight channels can be multiplexed and demultiplexed with a 2.6-dB drop loss, a 0.36-nm bandwidth (> 40 GHz), and a -20-dB channel crosstalk. Moreover, the scheme to increase the number of operating channels is also discussed.

Abstract:A compact parent-sub microring-resonator structure for highly integrated optical add-drop multiplexer (OADM) is proposed and demonstrated by numerical simulation. Due to Vernier effect, large FSR can be obtained by cascaded microrings with relatively large diameter. Furthermore, nearly uniform channel spacing is achieved due to employment of multiple resonances of the parent ring. As a representative example, a 4-channel OADM is simulated. Box-like response with flat passband is obtained by optimizing coupling coefficients. Add-drop crosstalk of −15dB, drop loss of near 0dB, and adjacent channel crosstalk of −25dB can be observed from the calculated transmission spectra. The reconfigurability, loss tolerance as well as the relation between bandwidth and crosstalk are also discussed.

Abstract:A 5 th -order coupled microring electro-optical modulator with PIN structures is proposed and experimentally demonstrated on SOI integrated photonics platform. Ultra-high dynamic extinction ratio (ER) up to 60 dB is achieved benefiting from the high-order optical band-pass filter design. The device size on chip is only 400×220 μm 2 including electrodes and the driving voltage is 2.1 V corresponding to 0.23 W power consumption. Such integrated modulators would be promising in building compact and low-power distributed optical fiber sensing systems using low-background-noise optical pulses.

Abstract:An on-chip three-mode division multiplexing circuit using a simple ADC-based TE 0 & TE 1 & TE 2 (de)multiplexer is demonstrated to improve the link capacity of on-chip optical interconnects. The proposed (de)multiplexer does not contain any tapered waveguide which is different from the previous mode (de)multiplexer based on ADCs. Here, we choose multimode waveguide width first and then confirm corresponding width of the other two waveguides. Thus the bus waveguide without any tapers can not only reduce complexity of (de)multiplexer but also reduce difficulty of the fabrication. Our simulation results show that the hybrid multiplexer has relatively low loss and low crosstalk about −40 dB, −26.99 dB and −28.72 dB for each mode around 1550 nm with a width-variation w =±25 nm. These properties make the proposed mode-(de)multiplexer suitable for application in high-capacity data transmission.

Abstract:A channel-selectable optical link based on a silicon microring resonator is proposed and demonstrated.This optical link consists of the wavelength-tunable microring modulators and the filters,defined on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform.With a p-i-n junction embedded in the microring modulator,light at the resonant wavelength of the ring resonator is modulated.The 2nd-order microring add-drop filter routes the modulated light.The channel selectivity is demonstrated by heating the microrings.With a thermal tuning efficiency of 5.9mW/nm,the filter drop port response was successfully tuned with 0.8nm channel spacing.We also show that modulation can be achieved in these channels.This device aims to offer flexibility and increase the bandwidth usage efficiency in optical interconnection.

Abstract:Reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (R-OADMs) are indispensable devices in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network systems, since they can be used for dynamically wavelength routing and for replacing any failed OADM unit. Here, we propose a photonic integrated R-OADM device based on silicon photonic crystal (PhC) slab waveguides, which is controlled through thermo-optic effect. The R-OADM device was composed of a tunable wavelength multiplexer/demultiplexer and a 2×2 optical switch, which were both formed with Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs). The device was compact with a net footprint of 500 μm × 140 μm, excluding its electrode pads. The dropping central wavelength of the R-OADM can be tuned through thermo-optic effect, and the output port of the drop signal can be selected between the THROUGH and DROP ports with the 2x2 optical switch. A maximum 10.8 nm dropping wavelength tuning was obtained with a heating power of 0.9 W. The 3-dB channel-dropping bandwidth was 5 nm and the extinction ratio at the dropping wavelength for the port THROUGH was as high as 40 dB. The tuning response speed was about 100 μsec.

Abstract:A wavelength tunable optical add-drop multiplexer based on silicon photonic wire waveguides with Bragg-grating-reflectors was demonstrated by tuning the dropping wavelength through thermooptic effect. A 6.6-nm dropping wavelength shift was obtained at a 0.82-W heating power. For the device that is presently polarization-dependent, the 3-dB channel-dropping bandwidth was 0.4 nm and the extinction ratio at the dropping wavelength for port THROUGH was better than 17 dB for assuming 1.6-nm wavelength spacing dense wavelength-division multiplexing. The average tuning speed was about 200 mu s.

Abstract:In this letter, a Mach-Zehnder-based four-port switching module was designed and fabricated by a 0.8-mu m standard commercial complementary metal-oxide semiconductor line. The module is composed of five electro-optic switching elements and can be used to realize nonblocking switching for the duplex interconnection among four ports. The switching elements are electrically driven with a nanosecond response. Full routing functionality of the four-port switching module is demonstrated with crosstalk levels lower than -11.8 dB under a common spectral bandwidth of 40 nm.

Abstract:We propose an ultra-compact novel wavelength multiplexer employing a (N + 1) × (N + 1) arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) and a polarization-combiner-rotator (PCR) on the SOI platform, to realize a multiplexing for 2N wavelengths with a spacing of Δλ. The (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG works at a bidirectional way to provide two groups of N × 1 wavelength multiplexing with each group having a channel spacing of 2×Δλ, and the central wavelengths of all input channels in one group have a wavelength shift of Δλ with respect to those in the other group. The double channel spacing results in a significant decrease on the footprint of the (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG-based multiplexer compared with a conventional 2N × 1 AWG multiplexer with the same wavelength spacing Δλ. Due to the fact that a single mode fiber is insensitive to the polarization of input light, if we consider short reach datacom applications such as 100/400 GbE, the two separate multiplexing outputs of the (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG can be combined as one output with one half wavelengths working at TE polarization and the other at TM polarization by employing a low loss and broadband PCR. In the experiment, we demonstrate a 16 × 200 GHz multiplexer based on a 9 × 9 AWG. The experimental results show that the on-chip loss of the fabricated multiplexer is 2.7 dB and the loss uniformity is 0.5 dB. The 1-dB and 3-dB bandwidths are >0.56 nm (i.e., 35% of the wavelength spacing) and >1.1 nm (i.e., 69% of the wavelength spacing), respectively. They can also be further increased by decreasing the gap between adjacent input waveguides at the interfaces of star couplers of the designed AWG without inducing an excess loss. The proposed multiplexer has great potential for application to future super large capacity (> Tb/s) data transmission systems.

Abstract:We demonstrate an integrated reconfigurable wavelength division multiplexing receiver on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. The receiver is composed of a 1 x 8 thermally tunable microring resonator filter and Ge-Si photodetectors. With low thermal tuning powers the channel allocation of the receiver can be reconfigured with high accuracy and flexibility. The thermal tuning efficiency is approximately 8 mW nm(-1). We show eight-channel configurations with channel spacing of 100 GHz and 50 GHz and a configuration in which all eight channels cover an entire free spectral range of the ring with uniform channel spacing of 1.2 nm. Each channel can receive high-quality signals with a data rate of up to 13.5 Gb s(-1); thus an aggregate data rate higher than 100 Gb s(-1) can be achieved.

Abstract:Two types of four-channel tunable optical add-drop multiplexers(OADM) are demonstrated which are based on fiber Bragg gratings(FBGs),optical circulators and switches. Both of them can dynamically select the drop channel or just bypass all WDM channels. The crosstalk from the adjacent channel is lower than -23dB and the isolation between the drop and add port is higher than 40dB.

Abstract:A high-speed photonic temporal differentiator based on cascaded SOI microring resonators is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in this study. The first-order all-optical differentiation functionality is realized through approaching the critical coupling condition of the cascaded microring resonators. A three-stage double channel side-coupled cascaded microring structure is used to provide wider bandwidth and larger notch depth in its transmission spectrum. The fabricated cascaded SOI microring device is experimentally verified by Gaussian-like pulse trains with a data rate of up to 80 Gbit s(-1). Due to the use of cascaded microring resonators, the notch depth in the transmission spectrum is increased from less than 30 dB to larger than 30 dB, thus the quality of the differentiated signal is improved.

Abstract:We present a 1×4 reconfigurable demultiplexer based on cascaded silicon microring resonators. The device is fabricated on a 0.18μm complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process. A homogeneous doped silicon slab heater is proposed and fabricated directly on the slab region of the microring resonator for thermal tuning. The flows of the heating currents in the heaters are parallel to the ring waveguide through the heavily doped slab regions located on both sides of the ring waveguide without through the waveguide core regions. The proposed doped heaters are experimentally verified with low-voltage operation and tuning efficiency of ∼77pm/mW. Without any tuning or trimming, predicted average channel spacing distribution in the whole free spectral range (FSR) is demonstrated. Full reconfigurability is also demonstrated in the demultiplexer with channel spacing of 2nm (250GHz) and 1nm (125GHz), corresponding to channel isolation of less than −21dB and −16dB, respectively. Such a low-voltage operation and reconfigurable demultiplexer is suitable for on-chip optical interconnect.

Abstract:In this paper,a 4×4 optical switch matrix based on free carrier dispersion effect is designed and fabricated on silicon-on-insulator(SOI) water by a 0.8 μm standard commercial CMOS line.It consists of four electro-optic 2×2 multimode imaging-based Mach-Zehnder interferometers.As a basic unit,the proposed switch matrix can be extended to n×n matrix switch and used in both optical space-division and optical time-division switching networks.The two paired MMIs in each Mach-Zehnder structure are used as 3 dB power splitters and combiners.Each switching element is electrically driven with an independent extermal power supply.By injecting free carriers into phase shifter with the active forward P-i-n diode,the π phase shift required for switching action is achieved.Experimental results show that the 4×4 silicon photonic switch matrix has the crosstalk level lower than-8.02 dB with a common spectral bandwidth as large as 35 nm,which is from 1 530 nm to 1 565 nm.Furthermore,when a specific square-wave signal with 10%-90% transition time of 5 ns is loaded,the switching response time is measured to be 17.4 ns for the rising edge and 21 ns for the falling edge,respectively.
