Abstract:We propose a nonreciprocal optical add-drop multiplexer with silicon waveguide, which is realized by grating assisted coupler employing magneto-optical nonceciprocal phase shift. This device can achieve different adding or dropping peak wavelengths when light is launched in the forward-directed and backward-directed propagation. The calculation results show that the shift of the different dropping peak wavelengths is up to 0.7nm. Also, we demonstrate its applications for narrowband optical isolators and circulators. This work demonstrates that on-chip nonreciprocal optical add-drop multiplexers and optical isolations can be implemented with the proposed device, which has promising applications for optical communication systems and photonic integrated devices.

Abstract:Mode division multiplexing (MDM) transmission based on few-mode fibers (FMFs) appears to be an alternative solution for overcoming the capacity limit of single-mode fibers (SMFs). A FMF coupler-based mode division multiplexer/demultiplexer (MMUX/DeMMUX) is proposed and theoretically investigated after the fabricated FMF is characterized. MMUXs/DeMMUXs with a mode contrast ratio (MCR) of more than 20 dB can be obtained for two-mode multiplexing and three-mode multiplexing over a wavelength span of 60 and 10 nm, respectively. We numerically verify the proposed MMUX/DeMMUX which has the advantages of high MCR, easy fabrication and maintenance, and low wavelength dependence.

Abstract:Based on a multimode interference (MMI) coupler in slot waveguide structures, an ultracompact wavelength demultiplexer operating at 1.30 and 1.55mum wavelengths is proposed and designed by using a full-vector mapped Galerkin mode solver and a modified three-dimensional full-vector beam propagation method. The tapered waveguide structures are applied to connect the input/output channels and the MMI section for reducing excess loss. The modal characteristics of the slot waveguides are analyzed and the evolution of the injected field in whole device are demonstrated. The results show that a MMI section of 119.8mum in length, which is only 27.5% length of that of the MMI coupler by using conventional rib waveguides, is achieved with the contrasts of 26.03 and 28.14dB at wavelengths 1.30 and 1.55mum, respectively, and the insertion losses are below 0.2dB at both wavelengths.

Abstract:Flexible mode-channels (de)multiplexing is of great significance for reconfigurable mode-division-(de)multiplexing (MDM) systems. By introducing a multi-core silicon photonic bus waveguide, a supermode-division-(de)multiplexing is proposed and demonstrated in this paper. The mode field distributions of the guided-supermodes have a major peak and several minor peaks localized in different sub-cores, showing very different behaviors from that in a regular multimode bus waveguide. By manipulating the width of sub-cores, the target supermode-channel is redistributed at one side of the multi-core bus waveguide so that it can be conveniently added/dropped. Moreover, to show the flexibility of this multi-core bus waveguide, an Euler-bend array for multi-channel propagation is designed. It is shown experimentally that the fabricated supermode-channel add/drop exhibits low excess losses of <0.2 dB, <0.37 dB and <0.55 dB for the TE S0 , TE S1 and TE S2 modes in the wavelength range of 1520-1600 nm, while the inter-mode crosstalks for three-mode channels are all less than −24 dB. For the fabricated Euler-bends, the excess losses are less than 0.12 dB and the inter-mode crosstalks are less than −21 dB for the TE S0 -TE S2 modes. The proposed scheme is promising for realizing mode-selective multiplexers and has potential for the construction of reconfigurable MDM systems.

Abstract:An on-chip three-mode division multiplexing circuit using a simple ADC-based TE 0 & TE 1 & TE 2 (de)multiplexer is demonstrated to improve the link capacity of on-chip optical interconnects. The proposed (de)multiplexer does not contain any tapered waveguide which is different from the previous mode (de)multiplexer based on ADCs. Here, we choose multimode waveguide width first and then confirm corresponding width of the other two waveguides. Thus the bus waveguide without any tapers can not only reduce complexity of (de)multiplexer but also reduce difficulty of the fabrication. Our simulation results show that the hybrid multiplexer has relatively low loss and low crosstalk about −40 dB, −26.99 dB and −28.72 dB for each mode around 1550 nm with a width-variation w =±25 nm. These properties make the proposed mode-(de)multiplexer suitable for application in high-capacity data transmission.

Abstract:We present an ultra-broadband and low-modal-crosstalk mode multiplexer based on cascaded vertical directional couplers formed by adiabatic-tapered waveguides without mode conversion. The input and output ports of the mode multiplexer are designed in the same planar layer to meet the standard package requirement. We design and fabricate a three-mode mode multiplexer, which serves to spatially combine and separate the E11, E21 and E12 modes in the few-mode-core outputs without mode conversion with polymer material, where adiabatic tapers are utilized in the design of directional coupler to extend the operation wavelength and two pairs of directional couplers serve to suppress the modal crosstalks. We fabricate a typical device to demonstrate the idea. The fabricated device has a length of 29 mm, which provides coupling ratios higher than 97% and modal crosstalks lower than – 19.6 dB over the C+L band and beyond with weak polarization dependence. The proposed mode multiplexer is fiber capable and allows to connect with the few-mode fibers directly by the use of fan-in and fan-out technology. The proposed mode multiplexer is simple, scalable, and effective to extend the operation wavelength as well as suppressing the modal crosstalks, which provides a powerful device to manipulate the modes in a mode division multiplexing system and an effective method to realize an all-optical chip for simplifying the Multi-Input Multi-Output signal processing with low power consumption.

Abstract:We propose a low-crosstalk and broadband mode (de)multiplexer. It is designed by cascading mode (de)interleavers utilizing silicon waveguide asymmetric Y-junctions. Asymmetric Y-junctions of each stage are modular. For each asymmetric Y-junction, the even (odd) modes of the stem separated from the odd (even) modes evolve into the low-order modes of the wide (narrow) arm by controlling the widths of the two arms, and vice versa. A four-channel mode (de)multiplexer for TE polarization is analyzed as an example. Simulations show the four-channel mode (de)multiplexer pair has a low crosstalk (<−14.1dB) over a common spectral bandwidth of 280nm.

Abstract:Asymmetrical directional couplers aided with subwavelength sidewall corrugations are used to realize ultra-compact silicon mode (de)multiplexers at C-band. Three mode (de)multiplexers with ultra-short coupling lengths of 5.6/6.5/7.7 μm are designed to enable low-loss mode conversions between TE0 and TE1/2/3 modes. They are then cascaded to build a four-channel mode-division-multiplexing (MDM) link. The four mode channels present minimal on-chip insertion losses of 0.2/0.7/0.7/0.9 dB at their peak wavelengths. Measured cross talk levels of the four mode channels are better than -18.0/-19.1/-16.0/-18.2 dB within the wavelength range from 1530 nm to 1580 nm.

Abstract:Efficient mode-selective manipulation in multimode photonics has drawn much attention as a key technology for realizing scalable and flexible mode-division multiplexing (MDM) systems. A mode-selective manipulation scheme based on the modal-field redistribution assisted with subwavelength grating (SWG) structures is proposed and demonstrated for the first time. In particular, the proposed scheme focuses on manipulating the coupling coefficient κ as well as the ratio δ / κ for different mode channels. The SWG structures are used to engineer the refractive-index profile and redistribute the modal field distributions in the multimode bus waveguide, so that different modes are localized in different local regions. In this way, the undesired mode coupling can be suppressed significantly while the desired mode coupling can be enhanced. With such mode manipulation scheme, the fundamental and higher-order mode channels in the bus waveguide can be added/dropped independently and freely. As a proof of concept, a three-channel mode-selective add-drop coupler utilizing the proposed scheme is fabricated and demonstrated experimentally on silicon. The fabricated devices show low excess losses ranging from 0.1 to 1.9 dB over a wavelength range of 70 nm. The inter-mode crosstalks are lower than −19.4 dB in the wavelength range of 1525–1600 nm. The crosstalks for the drop and through ports (i.e., the residual power) are suppressed to be as low as −18 ∼ −30 dB in the wavelength range of ∼60 nm with the assistance of an additional coupler in cascade for performance improvement. The present concept of manipulating the evanescent coupling of the mode-channels paves the way for designing multimode silicon photonic devices with flexible mode-selective manipulation for MDM systems.

Novel Wavelength Multiplexer Using (<italic>N</italic> + 1) × (<italic>N</italic> + 1) Arrayed Waveguide Grating and Polarization-Combiner-Rotator on SOI Platform

Abstract:We propose an ultra-compact novel wavelength multiplexer employing a (N + 1) × (N + 1) arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) and a polarization-combiner-rotator (PCR) on the SOI platform, to realize a multiplexing for 2N wavelengths with a spacing of Δλ. The (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG works at a bidirectional way to provide two groups of N × 1 wavelength multiplexing with each group having a channel spacing of 2×Δλ, and the central wavelengths of all input channels in one group have a wavelength shift of Δλ with respect to those in the other group. The double channel spacing results in a significant decrease on the footprint of the (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG-based multiplexer compared with a conventional 2N × 1 AWG multiplexer with the same wavelength spacing Δλ. Due to the fact that a single mode fiber is insensitive to the polarization of input light, if we consider short reach datacom applications such as 100/400 GbE, the two separate multiplexing outputs of the (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG can be combined as one output with one half wavelengths working at TE polarization and the other at TM polarization by employing a low loss and broadband PCR. In the experiment, we demonstrate a 16 × 200 GHz multiplexer based on a 9 × 9 AWG. The experimental results show that the on-chip loss of the fabricated multiplexer is 2.7 dB and the loss uniformity is 0.5 dB. The 1-dB and 3-dB bandwidths are >0.56 nm (i.e., 35% of the wavelength spacing) and >1.1 nm (i.e., 69% of the wavelength spacing), respectively. They can also be further increased by decreasing the gap between adjacent input waveguides at the interfaces of star couplers of the designed AWG without inducing an excess loss. The proposed multiplexer has great potential for application to future super large capacity (> Tb/s) data transmission systems.

Abstract:Dealing with the increase in data workloads and network complexity requires efficient selective manipulation of any channels in hybrid mode-/wavelength-division multiplexing (MDM/WDM) systems. A reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer (ROADM) using special modal field redistribution is proposed and demonstrated to enable the selective access of any mode-/wavelength-channels. With the assistance of the subwavelength grating structures, the launched modes are redistributed to be the supermodes localized at different regions of the multimode bus waveguide. Microring resonators are placed at the corresponding side of the bus waveguide to have specific evanescent coupling of the redistributed supermodes, so that any mode-/wavelength-channel can be added/dropped by thermally tuning the resonant wavelength. As an example, a ROADM for the case with three mode-channels is designed with low excess losses of <0.6, 0.7, and 1.3 dB as well as low cross talks of < − 26.3, −28.5, and −39.3 dB for the TE0, TE1, and TE2 modes, respectively, around the central wavelength of 1550 nm. The data transmission of 30 Gbps / channel is also demonstrated successfully. The present ROADM provides a promising route for data switching/routing in hybrid MDM/WDM systems.

Abstract:A simple and low-crosstalk 1 × 4 silicon mode (de)multiplexer based on multimode grating-assisted-couplers is proposed. Mode transitions can be flexibly controlled by designing the grating period at the phase-matching condition. Due to the contra-directional coupling, precise control of the coupling strength and the coupling length are not needed in the system. Calculation results show that the insertion loss and the 3 dB bandwidths of the device are 0.2 dB and 3.7 nm, 0.34 dB and 7.6 nm, and 0.21 dB and 11.8 nm for the channels which (de)multiplex to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd modes of the bus waveguide, respectively.

Abstract:By leveraging mode-division multiplexing (MDM), capacity of on-chip photonic interconnects can be scaled up to an unprecedented level. The demand for dynamic control of mode carriers has led to the development of mode-division multiplexing switches (MDMS), yet the conventional MDMS is incapable of directly accessing an individual lower-order mode that propagates in a multi-mode bus waveguide, which hinders its scalability and flexibility. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate the first direct-access MDMS as a novel platform for scalable on-chip multi-mode networks. At first, the highly efficient mode exchangers are developed for TE0–TE2 and TE1–TE2 mode swap, which are then employed to realize the direct-access mode add-drop multiplexers with high performances. The direct-access MDMS is then achieved based on the proposed mode add-drop multiplexers, which can be used for dynamically adding and dropping any selected mode carrier in a three-channel MDM. Moreover, the novel direct-access scheme is also adopted to simultaneously harness wavelength and mode carriers, leading to a wavelength/mode-hybrid multiplexing system with an enhanced link capacity of twelve channels. To further verify the utility of the MDMS, a multi-mode hubbed-ring network is constructed, where one hub and three nodes are organized within a ring-like multi-mode bus waveguide. The reconfigurable network traffic of 6 × 10 Gbps data streams are obtained by using three eigen modes as signal carriers. The measurement results show low bit-error rates (<10−9) with low power penalties (<3.1 dB).
An Ultra-Compact Dual-Channel Multimode Wavelength Demultiplexer Based on Inverse Design

Abstract:An ultra-compact multimode wavelength demultiplexer (MWD) with a footprint of 3.6 × 2.4 μm2 was designed. Its size is approximately two orders of magnitude smaller than the size of the traditional waveguide-based device. Moreover, the designed demultiplexer is multifunctional, and can realize wavelength demultiplexing and mode conversion at the same time. This MWD splits light at the wavelengths of 1450 nm and 1550 nm and simultaneously converts the input light from the fundamental transverse electric (TE0) mode to the first-order transverse electric (TE1) mode. The direct binary search (DBS) algorithm was employed to simulate the design. The results show that the insertion loss of the demultiplexer is −1.26 dB and −0.82 dB for the upper channel (wavelength 1450 nm) and lower channel (wavelength 1550 nm), while the crosstalk values are maintained as low as −18.10 dB and −23.35 dB, respectively. Additionally, a similar structure can be expanded to several modes. Based on these advantages, this multifunctional photonics device is expected to be used extensively in advanced photonic integration circuits.
Multichannel Mode-Selective Silicon Photonic Add/drop Multiplexer with Phase Change Material

Abstract:A multichannel mode-selective silicon photonic add/drop multiplexer is proposed by introducing asymmetric directional couplers (ADCs) assisted with phase change material (PCM) strips. Each ADC consists of a multimode bus waveguide and a single-mode access waveguide with a thin PCM strip on the top. For the present mode-selective add/drop multiplexer, the PCM of G e 2 S b 2 S e 4 T e 1 (GSST) is used, and the PCM-loaded access waveguide is designed optimally by engineering the effective index and the modal field profile. When the switching state of the add/drop multiplexer is OFF with crystal GSST, all the mode channels go through with very low excess losses. Otherwise, when it is ON, by switching the GSST-PCM strip to be amorphous, the desired TE mode channel can be selectively added to or dropped from the multimode bus waveguide, while the other mode channels still stay and propagate in the multimode bus waveguide. The simulated results show that the designed mode-selective silicon photonic add/drop multiplexer utilizing a single ADC has low excess losses of < 0.5 d B and low intermodal crosstalk of < − 15 d B over the C-band for all the mode channels. Furthermore, using the design with cascaded ADCs for each mode-selective add/drop switch, the crosstalk can be suppressed to < − 20 d B , and the excess losses are less than 1 dB over an 80 nm broad wavelength band from 1505 to 1585 nm.

Abstract:A silicon mode and polarization-division multiplexing scheme based on a densely packed waveguide array structured as a bus waveguide is introduced. A short adiabatic taper is adopted for (de) multiplexing. Such a structure shows theoretical insertion losses that are <0.05 dB and crosstalk that is <- 20 dB over a wide wavelength band for all five supported modes. The structures for (de) multiplexing are fabricated and characterized experimentally. A device, which consists of a multiplexer, a 50-mu m-long straight-bus waveguide, and a demultiplexer, exhibits insertion losses that are <0.6 dB and crosstalk that is <- 15 dB over an 80 nm wavelength band. Abstract:In this paper, a segment-coupled six-mode multiplexer based on multi-core fiber (MCF) is proposed to achieve multiplexing of LP 01 , LP 11 , LP 21 , LP 02 , LP 31 and LP 12 modes according to the principle of mode coupling and phase matching. The mode multiplexer consists of a two-part fiber waveguide that supports six modes of transmission at 1.55 μm wavelength. The transmission performance is analyzed with the finite element method (FEM) and the beam propagation method (BPM). The simulation results show that the insertion loss (IL) of the mode multiplexer is less than 1 dB in the wavelength range of 1.5439–1.5558 μm, and the lowest IL is 0.1837 dB. The coupling efficiencies (CEs) of the six modes are 99.7 %, 92.0 %, 98.6 %, 98.3 %, 97.4 % and 86.6 %, respectively. The designed mode multiplexer dramatically improves fiber space utilization while achieving more higher-order mode conversion. The mode multiplexer can be applied to the mode division multiplexing (MDM) system to solve the problem of mode multiplexing and demultiplexing.
