Abstract:Different alkyl side -chain length and thermal annealing effects on the phase separation and structural properties of Poly(alkylthiophene): Phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (P3AT:PCBM) bulk heterojunctions were systematically explored by investigation of optical response, morphology and the size of the PCBM aggregates. The relationship between conformational change and photophysical behavior was studied by absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the P3AT:PCBM blend films. A clear red-shift in absorption spectra and narrower PL peak confirmed that molecular conformation became flatter and formed a better intermolecular order in P3HT and P3OT blend films after annealing. Morphology and surface potential measurements provide evidence that phase separation occurred in P3AT:PCBM blends after annealing. To quantitatively analyze phase separation in P3AT:PCBM, small -angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) was employed to calculate the size of the PCBM clusters. The results showed that thermal annealing had less effect on the size of resultant PCBM aggregates for polymers with longer side-chains.
