Abstract:Considering the kinetic and fluid dynamic processes in the gain medium, a theoretical model is established to describe the mechanism of thermal-lensing effect in an exciplex pumped Cs vapor laser. The three-dimensional distribution of temperature and index of refraction in the gain medium are depicted. The effective focal length and radius of thermal lens are predicted. Our simulation results show the thermal lens plays a non-negligible role in high-power XPCsLs and can be significantly aggravated in higher wall temperature, buffer pressure and pump intensity. The divergence of laser beam influenced by thermal lens is also made in detail. This model is helpful for in-depth understanding of the thermal-lensing effect in XPALs.

Abstract:Based on the photothermal displacement effect and the optical diffraction effect, an alternative pulsed photothermal technique has been developed. This technique overcomes some disadvantages of conventional methods and provides a sensitive, noncontact and nondestructive probe of the transient thermal and mechanical process at solid and thin him surfaces. Meanwhile, a three-dimensional theoretical model has also been presented to describe the experimental phenomena. Excellent agreement between the theory and the experiment is obtained. As an example, the technique is demonstrated by measuring the thermal diffusivity of aluminum and brass thin plates.

Abstract:A laser interferometry method of measuring the thermal lensing of end-pumped solid-state lasers is proposed. This method provides a way easy to be carried out is real-time, having no influence on laser system, with a high spatial resolution for diagnosing thermal lensing. By this method, thermal lensing of end-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser is studied in detail. And this work provide a means for studying the thermal effects of laser medium and designing lasers of this kind.

Abstract:A new three-dimensional theoretical model for the laser-induced surface thermal lens in semiconductor materials has been developed by combining Fresnel diffraction theory with several photothermal effects, that is, photo-displacement effect, air-thermal lens effect, and photoreflectance effect. A characteristic parameter that is different from conventional photothermal deformation techniques is defined to characterize the frequency response of the signals. The influences of the electronic parameters of the semiconductors on the detected signal are discussed. The model indicates that the photo-displacement effect is dominant in the detected signal and diffraction pattern, but the air-thermal lens effect at low frequencies and the photoreflectance effect at high frequencies are significant. It is also shown that the position of the sample can be optimized to achieve higher detection sensitivity and the optimized position is dependent upon the modulation frequency.

Abstract:The thermal lensing effect of solid-state lasers under the lasing condition is studied by a thermal model for designing a working cavity. We simulate variations of the stable zones for cavities with different configurations. Theoretical descriptions are verified by a Nd: YAG laser in the experiment. The control of the thermal lensing is achieved experimentally by changing the configuration of the cavity.

Abstract:In this article, an accurate Fresnel diffraction model for a pulsed laser induced thermal lens effect in mode-mismatched crossed-beam configuration is presented. The effect of a lateral offset between the two beams is included in the model. This model is used to calculate the diffraction field of the probe beam at the detection plane from the very near- to the far-field, therefore the evolution of the intensity profile of the probe beam from the near- to the far-field is clearly illustrated. Numerical calculations predict and experimental results demonstrate that the thermal lens (TL) signal maximum is obtained when the probe beam propagates about a characteristic distance away from the sample position, while the characteristic distance is determined by the radius of the excitation beam in the sample and the wavelength of the probe beam. At large size mismatch of two beams and near-field detection cases, the TL signal is approximately independent on the sample location relative to the waist of the probe beam. The theoretical and experimental results are of great importance to configuration optimization of an extremely sensitive and compact TL instrument, which is the trend in the development of analytical instruments.

Abstract:In order to understand transient thermal processes in a thin aluminum foil subjected to a short high power laser pulse, molecular dynamics simulations were performed, applying the Monte Carlo method to laser irradiation. Melting and evaporation occur within the region where the laser energy was deposited. A high temperature region generated firstly at the interface by laser irradiation propagates through the substrate under the melt depth as a shock wave. In this paper, we will clarify the mechanism from a microscopic view and discuss the effect of the shock wave in a solid. The reason why the thermal shock wave propagate within a solid without damping the velocity can be explained by the existence of compressive precursor. Finally, to reconsider the validation of laser model with energy carrier, we attempted to modify laser model and compared it with original model.

Abstract:The optical properties of metal targets subject to ultrafast laser irradiation are dynamically changing.A hybrid method coupling the two-temperature model with molecular dynamics has been used to simulate the femto-and pico-second laserinduced thermal responses of copper films considering the dynamic and constant optical properties.The constant optical properties include an equivalent average reflectivity calculated by setting equally deposited laser energy and an absorption coefficient at room temperature.The results show that the electron and lattice temperatures are little different in both femtosecond and picosecond laser cases,especially for the femtosecond laser with a pulse width far less than electron-lattice relaxation time.As the laser pulse width is comparable to or greater than the relaxation time,e.g.,the picosecond laser,the influence of the dynamic change of the optical properties on the melting and re-solidification of the material becomes more significant.

Abstract:The continuous development and application of laser technology, and the increasing energy and power of laser output have promoted the development of various types of laser optical systems. The optical components based on quartz materials are key components of high-power laser systems, and their quality directly affects the load capacity of the system. Due to the photothermal effect when the laser interacts with the quartz material and generates extremely high temperatures in a short period of time, it is impossible to experimentally solve the phenomena and physical mechanisms under extreme conditions. Therefore, it is very important to select a suitable method to investigate the thermal effect of intense laser interaction with quartz materials and explain the related physical mechanism. In this study, a three-dimensional quarter-symmetric laser heating quartz material geometry model by using nonlinear transient finite element method was established, and its transient temperature field distribution of the quartz material after being heated by a 1,064 nm continuous laser was investigated. In addition, the influence of different laser parameters (laser spot radius, heat flux and irradiation time), material parameters (material thickness, material absorption rate of laser) on the thermal effect of heating quartz material were also studied. When the laser heat flux is 20 W/cm2, the diameter of the laser spot is 10 cm, the irradiation time is 600 s and the thickness is 4 cm, the temperature after laser heating can reach 940.18°C, which is far lower than the melting point. In addition, the temperature maximum probes were set at the overall model, spot edge and rear surface respectively, and their temperature rise curves with time were obtained. It is also found that there is a significant hysteresis period for the rear surface temperature change of the quartz material compared with the overall temperature change due to heat conduction. Finally, the method proposed can also be applied to the laser heating of other non-transparent materials.

Abstract:The transient temperature and pressure field development in the excimer laser-induced vaporization of liquids in contact with a solid surface is studied. A thin silicon film, which has temperature-dependent optical properties, is embedded between an absorbing chromium film and a transparent fused quartz substrate. Static reflectivity measurement is performed to determine the thin film optical properties at elevated temperatures. The transient backward reflectance responses from the silicon layer are compared with heat transfer modeling results. The backward reflectance probe is not affected by the creation of bubbles and is successfully employed for the first time to measure non-intrusively the temperature development during the rapid vaporization process. The optical reflectance probes are applied from the front-side and back-side of the sample simultaneously to monitor the dynamic bubble nucleation behavior and transient temperature development, respectively, at various ambient pressures using a high- pressure cell. The investigation on the effect of ambient pressure on the bubble nucleation threshold combined with the surface temperature measurement determines the thermodynamic state of the superheated metastable liquid at the interface and subsequently the explosion pressure.

Abstract:Non-uniform temperature field in optical transparent glasses induced by high power Gaussian laser irradiation would introduce temperature gradient which will cause thermal lens effects inside materials. Such thermal lens influences on long pulse laser processing are usually omitted in previous studies. However, thermally-induced refractive index change in situ could have a relatively large impact on subsequent incident laser especially under the action of high power laser. In order to obtain a quantitatively transient results of thermal lens effects caused by long pulse laser, we carried out numerical simulations of temperature rise, refractive index change and their influences on light trail in K9 glass heated by a millisecond pulse laser. Different laser energy and glass thickness were applied to reveal the dependence of thermal lens and laser and glass parameters. Results show that the thermal lens effects would increase refractive index in K9 glass and reconverge subsequent laser beam consequently whose amplitude is proportional to incident laser power and glass thickness. The simulation results are compared with the previous experimental results and are consistent in magnitude of refractive index change. But there is a certain gap in refractive index field distribution in the direction of laser radius due to the neglect of influence of refractive index raise to susequent lasers in temperature simulations. This work would provide a reference in the field of millisecond pulse laser processing optical transparent materials.

Abstract:Solid-state heat-capacity laser (SSHCL) has been developed in recent years. One of the key features of this heat capacity approach is the inversion of the temperature profile through the medium as compared to conditions where the laser is actively cooled while lasing takes place. So the thermal effects in the active medium on the two conditions mentioned above must be different.In this paper, we mostly discuss the contribution of temperature gradients to the effect of the thermal lens in optically pumped cylindrical laser rods operated in heat capacity operation through classical thermal conductivity equation, end effects and birefringence of the material with stress from temperature gradients ignored. Expressions are derived for the focus length of thermal lensing in laser rods for single-shot and repetitively pulsed operations. Programming the computer, we respectively calculate the thermal induced refractive power of the laser rods in the heat capacity operation and on the cooling condition, and compare the double results.

Abstract:A non-Fourier conduction model with heat source term is presented to study the target temperature evolvement when the target is radiated by high power (the laser intensity is above 109w/cm2) and ultra short (the pulse width is less than 150ps) pulsed laser. By Laplace transform, the analytical expression of the space- and time-dependence of temperature is derived. Then as an example of aluminum target, the target temperature evolvement is simulated. Compared with the results of Fourier conduction model and non-Fourier model without heat source term, it is found that the effect of non-Fourier conduction is notable and the heat source plays an important role during non-Fourier conduction which makes surface temperature ascending quickly with time. Meanwhile, the corresponding physical mechanism is analyzed theoretically.

Abstract:Analytical models are very important to understand physical, chemical, and biological phenomena. In many cases, obtaining an analytical model is a complex, even an impossible task. In this work, an analytical model for thermal lens spectroscopy has been developed. The model considers light absorbing liquids, a laser pulsed beam as the heat source, timescale thermal regime, and small phase change produced by heating. A simplification for low-absorption samples is obtained. A complete theoretical study of their utilization is shown. Measurements of the thermal diffusivity of water-ethanol sample mixtures in the liquid phase are analyzed. These values for pure substances are in good agreement with those reported in the literature. Our methodology could be very useful in the analysis of the optical and thermal properties of liquids.

Abstract:Quantitative yet simple analytical solutions of surface temperature under pulsed laser illumination are presented for a quick estimation in optical spectroscopy studies. Dependence of steady state surface temperature as well as its temporal evolution on laser parameters, such as repetition rate and beam radius, together with medium properties is thoroughly investigated using the analytical solution, which is supported by numerical simulation. It is found that when the pulse number is larger than 100 within the heat diffusion time, the steady-state temperature rise reaches more than 85% of the temperature rise induced by CW laser heating of the same power. We provide a summary of the results to allow their use for a quick estimate of surface temperature evolution from pulse laser heating if laser parameters and medium properties are known.

Abstract:The thermodynamics of the rapid vaporization of a liquid on a solid surface heated by an excimer laser pulse is studied experimentally The transient temperature field is measured by monitoring the photothermal reflectance of an embedded thin film in nanosecond time resolution. The transient reflectivity is calibrated by considering a temperature gradient across the sample based on the static measurements of the thin film optical properties at elevated temperatures. The dynamics of bubble nucleation growth, and collapse is detected by probing the optical specular reflectance. The metastability behavior of the liquid and the criterion for the onset of liquid-vapor phase transition in nanosecond time scale are obtained quantitatively for the first time.
Thermal Effects in Laser-Induced Strong Shock-Waves

Abstract:Laser induced shock waves were orginated by surface energy absorption, the thermal effects should be examined carefully. Work reported here was endeavored to improve the present shock theory to include the external heat source. A model with a moving boundary as ablation front of laser was used to avoid the complexity of plasma. Hyperbolic heat conduction equations were adopted due to the small time and space range. The thermal terms were coupled into Gruneisen EOS through internal energy. Approximate difference analysis to aluminum shows that the laser heating was limited near the ablation surface, and the shock pulse did not show obvious change compared with conventional case because the pressure–volume relation is not sensitive to temperature. Our results also indicates that unloading melting or structural transition may take in the thermal and pressure coupling region. These might have obvious influence to the shock pulse behavior.
Experimental Study of the Thermal Lens Effect of Nd∶glass Laser in Heat Capacity Operation

Abstract:The designing construction of Nd∶glass laser cavity is double flashlamp pumped,symmetrical,close coupling and unfocused.The cooling channels of Nd∶glass rod are separated from water-cooling channels of flashlamp independently.Through 10s experiment,laser beam patterns have been measured at 10Hz repetition rate and 250μs pulse duration of two flashlamps for 900W pump power in heat capacity operation and general water-cooling operation successively.16 facular pictures have been collected from total 100 facular pictures in same interval.The contrastive facular pictures show that the thermal lens effect of heat capacity operation is negative lens effect not same as convex effect of general water-cooling operation.The obtained result is favor of the deferent characteristic of Nd∶glass laser in heat capacity operation.

Abstract:Ultrashort pulse laser heating is not only capable of resolving and observing the ultrafast interaction of energy carriers, i. e. electrons, phonons, but also widely applied to material processing, i. e., laser ablation. However, the previous theories, i. e., two-temperature model, parabolic one-step model, can be applied only to some limited segments. In this paper, according to the two-temperature model and Fourier's law, a general theoretical model is presented for the description of the entire heat relaxation process after the thin metal film deposited on the substrate has been heated by the ultrashort pulse laser. Moreover, the heat conduction process is also experimentally studied by using the rear-pump front-probe transient thermoreflectance technique on Au/glass and Au/SiC at 300 K, and the theoretical prediction accords well with the experimental result, which illustrates the validity of the present theoretical model. Based on the good agreement between theoretical predictions and experimental data, the electron-phonon coupling factor of the thin gold film and thermal boundary conductance of the Au/glass and Au/SiC interfaces are extracted and the measured results are in good agrement with the previous reported values. The electron-phonon coupling factor is close to that of the bulk material and does not exhibit size effect. The thermal boundary conductance is greater than the prediction of diffuse mismatch model, and the reasons responsible for the discrepancies are electrons participating in the interfacial heat conduction, interfacial atom diffusion and inelastic scattering. © 2011 Chinese Physical Society.
