Abstract:We demonstrate both experimentally and numerically linear symmetry-breaking diffraction and nonlinear dynamic self-trapping of an optical beam in hexagonal photonic lattices. We show that a stripe multivortex beam undergoes asymmetric linear diffraction, but evolves into a moving self-trapped beam under a self-defocusing nonlinearity. Fine features of symmetry-breaking in diffraction of elliptical multivortex beams are also observed and discussed.

Abstract:Optical vortices, which are beams with helical wavefronts and spiral phase mismatches, have garnered considerable attention in various fields. In this study, we theoretically proposed and experimentally implemented a simple method for generating first-order optical vortices. To generate first-order vortex beams using the polarization field in the momentum space of photonic crystal slabs, topological half charges are required. We propose a method to divide the polarization vortex in the momentum space by breaking symmetry, which results in Dirac points or circularly polarized points. This approach enables the transformation of topological integer charges into topological half-integer charges, thereby facilitating the generation of first-order vortex beams. This approach extends the application of bound states in continuum and topological photonics.

Abstract:Higher-band self-trapping and oscillation(rotation) of nonlinear quadruple beams in two-dimensional(2D) square photonic lattices are numerically demonstrated.Under appropriate conditions of nonlinearity,a quadruple-like beam can self-trap into localized modes that reside in the second Bragg reflection gap through single-site excitation.By changing the initial orientation of the incident quadruple beam related to the lattices,periodic oscillations of the localized quadruple mode may be obtained.The localized quadruple state becomes a rotating doubly charged optical vortex(DCV) during rotation and should undergo charge-flipping when the rotating direction is reversed.

Abstract:This study analytically and numerically investigates the evolution of an optical vortex beam carrying topological charges (TCs) in a fractional Schrodinger equation with competing nonlocal nonlinearities. Results show that the number of beads, TCs, and size of the incident beam significantly affect vortex production and evolution. Common rules formulated based on various incident beams determine the number of induced vortices and corresponding rotation direction. The beams gradually expand to induce vortices in oppositely charged pairs during propagation, thus conserving the vortex's net TC. The demonstrated optical vortex is significant for quantum information communication and optical imaging and processing applications.

Abstract:We embed a helical lattice into a portion of a bulk photorefractive medium to form a synthetic structure and numerically investigate the nonlinear transmission of a probe vortex beam in the structure. Numerical demonstrations confirm that the structure can stabilize multisoliton states in the form of nonrotating and nonexpanding necklacelike solitons. Lattice structure and the amplitude, width, and topological charge of the probe vortex beam can influence the structure of necklacelike solitons. Interestingly, an increase in beam intensity may lead to multiplication of the number of bright “spots.”

Abstract:Solitons and necklaces in the first band-gap of a two-dimensional optically induced honeycomb defocusing photonic lattice are theoretically considered. It is shown that dipoles, soliton necklaces, and vortex necklaces exist and may possess regions of stable propagation through a photorefractive crystal. Most of the configurations disappear in bifurcations close to the upper edge of the first band. Solutions associated with such bifurcations are also numerically examined, and it is found that they are often asymmetric and more exotic. The dynamics of the relevant unstable structures are also examined through direct numerical simulations revealing either breathing oscillations or, in some cases, destruction of the original waveform.

Abstract:Light beams undergoing optical Bloch oscillations (OBOs) in two-dimensional (2D) photonic lattices suffer from severe diffraction along the perpendicular direction to the oscillation plane. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate that such diffraction could be suppressed in hexagonal photonic lattices via sophisticated managements of the discrete diffraction. By positioning the Fourier spectrum of the beam to a special region in the Brillouin zone, the light driven by the OBO experiences normal and anomalous diffractions alternatively, leading to a non-diffracting propagation for a long distance. We show that non-diffracting OBOs can be implemented not only for Gaussian beam but also for other complex 2D beams including self-accelerating Airy beams and vortex beams. Our results provide novel insights into the diffraction or dispersion engineering of waves in periodic structures.

Abstract:As is well known, the vortex beams have significant potential applications in both quantum and classical communication systems. In this paper, we study the existence and robustness to propagation of families of multi-vortex waveforms, namely multi-vortex optical beams in nonlinear self-focusing cubic (Kerr) media with harmonic potential wells. The intensity patterns, phase structures, transverse energy flow, and gradient forces (upon micro-particles) of those multi-vortex beams are presented and we found that they are all different from those of the ordinary vortex beams. The evolution during propagation of the intensities and widths of the multi-vortex beams is investigated in detail. The obtained results show that the one-vortex beams have asymmetric patterns and spiral propagation trajectories, depending on the off-axis parameter of the vortices. The two-vortex beams and the higher than two-vortex waveforms have symmetric patterns, which rotate during propagation, and the rotation direction can be controlled by the sign of the topological charge.

Abstract:Based on the Fresnel diffraction theory, the intensity distribution of a vortex beam diffracted by a regular hexagonal multi-hole array is investigated and the effects of the structural parameters of this regular hexagonal multi hole array on the cellular optical field are also analyzed. The research results show that the diffracted field periodically changes with the phase structure and thus a cellular or petal shaped intensity distribution can be obtained. The radius of the circular hole has an effect on the diffracted field range and the side length of the regular hexagon has influences on the width and the separation distance of the diffraction fringes.

Abstract:We report our recent work on self-trapping of doubly-charged vortices (DCVs) in two-dimensional optically induced photonic lattices. We show that in an ideal isotropic nonlinear periodic medium self-trapping of a DCV can lead to formation of a rotating ‘quasi-vortex’ soliton with periodic charge-flipping, but the vortex breaks up into multiple singly-charged vortices in an anisotropic nonlinear medium. Such topological transformation of high-order vortices under conventional four-site excitation in a square photonic lattice has been observed in our experiment and corroborated with numerical simulations. With geometrically extended eight-site excitation, however, discrete self-trapping of a DCV into a stable high-order vortex soliton can be realized with both self-focusing and self-defocusing nonlinearities.

Abstract:The valley contrasting physics in photonic systems gives rise to many interesting phenomena such as photonic valley Hall effect and robust valley transport. However, most reported valley photonic crystals are demonstrated in the honeycomb lattice. Here, unidirectional bulk modes and robust edge modes are numerically and experimentally shown in triangular photonic crystals. By switching the phase vortex of an input chiral source, dynamic unidirectional propagation of bulk modes at different valleys is observed. Unidirectional edge modes are also demonstrated on the domain wall between two distinct triangular photonic crystals. In addition, robust edge modes around sharp corners are experimentally confirmed. This work paves the way for the realization of dynamic unidirectional photonic transport and robust valley transport in photonic crystals.

Abstract:The toolbox quantities used for manipulating the flow of light include typically amplitude, phase, and polarization. Pseudospins, such as those arising from valley degrees of freedom in photonic structures, have recently emerged as an excellent candidate for this toolbox, in parallel with rapid development of spintronics and valleytronics in condensed-matter physics. Here, by employing symmetry-broken honeycomb photonic lattices, we demonstrate valley-dependent wavepacket self-rotation manifested in spiraling intensity patterns, which occurs without any initial orbital angular momentum. Theoretically, we show that such wavepacket self-rotation is induced by the Berry phase and results in Zitterbewegung oscillations. The "center-of-mass" of the wavepacket oscillates at a gap-dependent frequency, while the helicity of self-rotation is valley-dependent, that is, correlated with the Berry curvature. Our results lead to new understanding of the venerable Zitterbewegung phenomenon from the perspective of topology and are readily applicable on other platforms such as two-dimensional Dirac materials and ultracold atoms.

Abstract:The dynamics characteristics of spiral beams composed of two coherent solitons in photovoltaic photorefractive crystal twinning with mirroring diffusion management are investigated. The numerical simulations show that the orbits of spiral beams depend on the co-effect of the diffusion and coherence effects, and that spiral beams are forcedly rotated around the propagation axis set inside the twinning plane. Moreover, when the incident position of two coherent solitons relative to the twinning plane is reversed, the rotation direction of spiral beams is reversed accordingly. Furthermore, when the initial separation between (peak intensity of) two coherent solitons is adjusted, the rotation speed of spiral beams is adjusted accordingly.

Abstract:An optical vortices beam with a helical phase term shows a new degree of freedom, namely orbital angular momentum (OAM). Here, we generate three-dimensional (3D) photonic lattices which have vortex array structures. We use the spatial light modulator (SLM) to produce two sets of non-diffracting lattice light fields and superpose the two lattice light fields together. The rotation angle and size of the two light fields are variable when we generate the superposition lattice light fields. This design to generate photonic lattice light is neoteric and easy operation. Furthermore, the new photonic lattice is not only in good periodicity but also has the vortex array structures. We have carried out numerical simulation results and experimental results on these new types of 3D lattices, and made an in-depth discussion on their optical field properties and structural characteristics.

Abstract:We demonstrate the self-trapping of single- and double-charged optical vortices in waveguide lattices induced with a self-defocusing nonlinearity. Under appropriate conditions, a donut-shaped single-charged vortex evolves into a stable discrete gap vortex soliton, but a double-charged vortex turns into a self-trapped quadrupole-like structure. Spectrum measurement and numerical analysis suggest that the gap vortex soliton does not bifurcate from the edge of the Bloch band, quite different from previously observed gap spatial solitons. Our numerical findings are in good agreement with experimental observations.

Abstract:We report the propagation dynamics of swallowtail beams (SBs) within a photorefractive crystal. In the nonlinear regime, the self-accelerating and secondary self-focusing features of the swallowtail beams are influenced, and a solitary wave is generated. The main lobe energy of the swallowtail beams is guided to a specific inclined trajectory, leading to a stable solitary wave, and we control the output position of the solitary wave by changing the launch angle. Our results are supported by the corresponding experiments. In addition, we demonstrate that a Gaussian beam can be effectively guided in swallowtail optical waveguide structures. Our research represents an interesting interaction between the swallowtail beams and nonlinear medium, which may find potential applications in photonic integrated devices and optical information transmission.

Abstract:We study coherent and incoherent interactions between discrete vortex and fundamental solitons in two-dimensional photonic lattices, presenting a new scheme for all-optical routings and topological transformations of vorticities. Due to the multi-lobe intensity and step-phase structure of the discrete vortex soliton, the coherent soliton-interactions allow both solitons to be steered into multiple different possible destination ports depending on the initial phase of the discrete fundamental soliton. We show that charge-flipping of phase singularities and orbital angular momentum transfer can occur during the coherent interactions between the two solitons. For incoherent interactions, by controlling the relative intensities of the two solitons, we reveal that soliton-steering can be realized by either attracting the discrete fundamental soliton to four ports or localizing the four-lobe discrete vortex soliton into a ring soliton.
