Abstract:In this paper, the interactional behaviors of anomalous vortex beams in highly nonlocal media are investigated. An analytical expression describing the interaction is given, and some numerical simulations are carried out to illustrate the interactional characteristics. It is found that two interactional anomalous vortex beams always attract each other, and their evolution is periodical. The influence of different relative phases between two anomalous vortex beams on their interaction is presented in details.

Abstract:The propagation properties of anomalous vortex beams in strongly nonlocal nonlinear media are investigated. Two equivalent analytical expressions for the evolution of anomalous vortex beams are obtained. It is found that the input power plays a key role in the beam evolutions. Selecting a proper input power, the beam width can be broadened or be compressed periodically, even it can keep invariant during propagation. The beam order and the topological charge mainly influence the intensity evolution and the phase evolution, respectively. The evolution period, the beam width, the phase distribution and the intensity distribution are discussed in detail. The results can also be generalized to other equivalent physical systems, such as an optical fractional Fourier transform system or a medium with a quadratic graded refractive index distribution.

Abstract:The evolution of a controllable vortex anomalous hollow beam (CVAHB) in free space is studied theoretically and numerically. Based on the Collins integral, the analytical formula of its propagation under free space paraxial approximation is derived. The corresponding beams with different parameters are simulated numerically, and the influence of each beam parameter on the beam type and intensity distribution during beam propagation is studied. Through the parameter control, the CVAHB can present a variety of intensity modes, such as hollow, three-segment, boat, etc. It is obvious that the evolution of CVAHB is different from that of the controllable anomalous hollow beam (CAHB). By changing the value of the topological charge (TC), the role of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) in the transverse distribution and propagation of light intensity is studied in detail.

Abstract:According to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and Poisson equation of thermal diffusion, we investigate the interaction of double beams in (1+2)-dimension thermal nonlocal medium, using the slip-step Fourier algorithm and multi-grid method. The results show that the two beams intertwine with each other during propagation. If the power and the tilt parameter are appropriate, the projections of the trajectories of the beams in (X, Y) plane are approximately circle, even if the incident distance between the beams is changed. Because of the strongly nonlocal property of thermal medium, the influences of boundaries and initial transverse momentum can be felt when beams are far from the boundaries; there will be an oscillatory propagation when the mass center of the input field deviates from sample center or the initial transverse momentum is unequal to zero.

Abstract:Different cosine phase factors n can make the vortex cosine-Gaussian beam(VCGB) exhibit a multi-ring structure. When the number of vortex points of the VCGB was 1, the analytical expression of the orbital angular momentum was the Dawson integral function. By the split-step Fourier method, the propagation of a VCGB in nonlocalized medium was numerically simulated. It was found that when the vortex point was asymmetric with respect to the origin, the energy flow distribution of the VCGB was asymmetric. The center of mass is move with the transmission of the beam in nonlocal medium, resulting in oblique transmission. If the sign in front of the imaginary part of the vortex point changes, the rotation direction of the soliton changes. When two VCGBs were transmitted in nonlocalized medium, they can be intertwined or transmitted in serpentine shapes. Therefore, the beam information can be encoded by changing the phase factor and the number of vortex points. The beam transmission path in the nonlocal medium can be controlled by changing the vortex position.

Abstract:Vortex beams are powerful primitives for optical operations and communications. We propose general mathematical methods to establish new vortex beams and optimize existing vortex beams. Based on these methods, two new types of vortex beams are demonstrated theoretically and experimentally. The propagation characteristics of these vortex beams can be finely controlled through specific parameters. Additionally, influences of periodic discontinuities and orbital angular momentum of two vortex beams are analyzed. The innovative concept of beam modulation and the introduction of new vortex beams in this paper indicate significant potential for applications in particle trapping, spatial communication, and quantum computation.

Abstract:In this study, the propagation characteristics of complex-valued hyperbolic-cosine-Gaussian (CVHCG) beams were studied based on the nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger equation in strongly nonlocal nonlinear media (SNNM). The CVHCG beams exhibited some unique propagation characteristics. By adjusting the complex-valued parameters, CVHCG beams can propagate with different forms in SNNM, including Gaussian-like, nearly flat-topped, multi-peak, and four-peak forms. CVHCG beams can form shape-invariant solitons and breathers under certain incident parameters. In addition, CVHCG beams can also form generalized shape-variant high-order spatial solitons and breathers. In general, the beam width and light intensity pattern of the CVHCG beams always change periodically. A complete theoretical model was constructed, and the expressions for the propagation, light intensity, and second-order moment beam width were obtained analytically. Some typical propagation characteristics were demonstrated via numerical simulations. The results of this study can be extended to investigate other complex-valued beams. (c) 2021 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:We introduce a class of spiraling anomalous vortex beam (AVB) arrays in strongly nonlocal nonlinear media. The general analytical formula for the arrays is derived, and its propagation properties are analyzed. It is shown that the spiraling AVB arrays can present three different propagation states (shrink, expansion, and the dynamical bound state) depending on the absolute value of the transverse velocity parameter (0 < vertical bar xi vertical bar < 1, vertical bar xi vertical bar > 1, and vertical bar xi vertical bar = 1). Accordingly, we propose the concept of array breathers and array solitons. The topological charge of the vortex and the number of the constituent AVB also play important roles in the evolution of the AVB arrays. It is found that the light intensity of the central region of the array's field under an in-phase incident condition is not zero during propagation if and only if the ratio between the two parameters is an integer. By using the derived analytical expression, a series of numerical examples is exhibited to graphically illustrate these typical propagation properties. In addition, we give a variety of array forms of multibeam interaction. Our results may provide insight into vortex beam arrays and may be applied in optical communication and particle control.

Abstract:Based on the unified theory of coherence-polarization, we utilize the extended Huygens-Fresnel principle to derive analytical expressions for the average intensity distribution of a radially polarized anomalous vortex beam (RPAVB) propagating through non-Kolmogorov maritime atmospheric turbulence. The hollow structure of the RPAVB can be sustained over long distances by manipulating the self-focusing point position, which depends on the initial beam parameters. This manipulation effectively mitigates the effect of maritime atmospheric turbulence. Additionally, the RPAVB undergoes a transition into a Gaussian form at significant distances, which can be intentionally slowed down by increasing the beam order, topological charge, beam width, or reducing the turbulent strength.

Abstract:The properties of fractional Fourier transform of anomalous vortex beams are studied. A new type of analytical expression of fractional Fourier transform for anomolous vortex beams is obtained. The properties of anomolous vortex beams on different fractional Fourier transform planes with different parameters are illustrated. The results show that the anomolous vortex beams always has a doughnut profile, the distribution of intensity on different fractional Fourier transform planes highly depends on the fractional order and the beam parameters, such as the beam order and the topological charge.

Abstract:The propagation dynamics of the complex variable cosine-Gaussian cross-phase (CVCGCP) array beams in strongly nonlocal nonlinear media are researched based on the nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Under the effect of cross-phase, the transverse mode of CVCGCP array beams changes periodically and rotates during propagation. Compared with higher-order temporal solitons in nonlinear optical fibers, CVCGCP array beams can be considered as a new form of higher-order spatial solitons. The expression of the optical field distribution for the propagation evolution of CVCGCP array beams is presented. According to the different parameters, three cases are studied in detail. The light intensity pattern, phase and statistical width of CVCGCP array beams are discussed and analyzed. The results show that CVCGCP array beams have rich transmission characteristics and can form a linear shape distribution, which has the practical application value. By selecting the parameters, the light intensity patterns can be repeated and controlled, so as to achieve the purpose of controlling the light intensity patterns. The results of this paper enrich the types of higher-order spatial solitons, and also provide theoretical references for beam control and information transmission, etc.

Abstract:By using the ray-tracing method based on geometric optics, we studied the propagating and focusing characteristics of vortex beams with a top-hat intensity distribution. An intuitive mathematical model is established for the propagation and focusing of vortex beams, revealing the mechanisms and physics underlying the spatial evolution, e.g., the dark spot formation in the center of a vortex beam, the relationship between the radius of the dark spot and the propagation distance, and the rotational angle varying with the propagation distance for an azimuthal asymmetric vortex beam. The experimental observations are consistent with theoretical predictions. The results and findings are helpful in intuitively understanding the propagation and evolution of specific vortex beams; therefore, they are of significance for explorations of the novel properties of twisted vortex beams and their applications.

Abstract:We investigate here a new class of optical beams: modified hollow Gaussian beams (MHGBs) in strongly nonlocal nonlinear media (SNNM). A set of analytical expressions for the propagation properties is deduced and some numerical simulations are also carried out to illustrate the propagation properties. It is found that the evolution of the MHGBs in SNNM is periodical, which is the result of the competition between nonlinearity and diffraction. The second-order moment beam width of the MHGBs can keep invariant during propagation like a soliton when the input power equals the critical power, otherwise it varies periodically like a breather. However, the patterns of transverse intensity are always changing with the propagation distance increasing, which is different from solitons or breathers. It is also found that the evolution curve of on-axis intensity may manifest itself in a concave, a platform, or a Gaussian-like shape depending on the input power.
Propagation of focused scalar and vector vortex beams in anisotropic media: A semi-analytical approach

Abstract:In the field of structured light, the study of optical vortices and their vectorial extension--vectorial vortex beams--has garnered substantial interest due to their unique phase and polarisation properties, which make them appealing for many potential applications. Combining the advantages of vortex beams and anisotropic materials, new possibilities for electromagnetic field tailoring can be achieved in nonlinear optics, quantum and topological photonics. These applications call for a comprehensive modelling framework that accounts for properties of both anisotropic materials and vector vortex beams. In this paper, we describe a semi-analytical model that extends the vectorial diffraction theory to focused vortex beams propagating through a uniaxial slab, considering the cases of scalar and vectorial vortexes in the common framework of a Laguerre-Gaussian modes. The model aims to provide a comprehensive description of the methodology, enabling the implementation of complex beams transmission through, reflection from and propagation in uniaxial anisotropic materials for specific applications. We apply the developed approach to propagation of high-order vortex beams in uniaxial materials with various dispersion characteristics> elliptic, hyperbolic and epsilon-near-zero regimes. We show how variations of the medium anisotropy modify the beam structure due to the vectorial nature of their interaction, which results from the different permittivities of the medium for transverse and longitudinal field components. The applicability of the approach can be extended to artificially structured media if they can described by effective medium parameters. The developed formalism will be useful for modelling of interaction of complex beams with uniaxial materials, allowing a common framework for a large variety of situations, which can also be extended beyond the electromagnetic waves.

Abstract:Colloidal media with well-defined optical properties have been widely used as model systems in many fundamental and applied studies of light-matter interactions in complex media. Recent progress in the field of engineered nanoscale optical materials with fundamentally new physical properties opens new opportunities for tailoring the properties of colloids. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate the evolution of the optical vortex beams of different topological charges propagating in engineered nano-colloidal suspension of negative polarizability with saturable nonlinearities. Due to the high power of the incident beam, the modulation instability leads to an exponential growth of weak perturbations and thus splits the original vortex beam into a necklace beam consisting of several bright spots. At a fixed power, the number of observed bright spots is intrinsically determined by the topological charge of the incident beam and agrees well with the predictions of our linear stability analysis and numerical simulations. Besides contributing to the fundamental science of light-matter interactions in engineered soft-matter media, this work opens new opportunities for dynamic optical manipulation and transmission of light through scattering media as well as formation of complex optical patterns and light filamentation in naturally existing colloids such as fog and clouds.

Abstract:In general, singular acoustic beams travel in a straight line and expand during propagation, which limits the scope of their applications. We present a method for generating paraxial zero-order Bessel-like acoustic beams with arbitrary trajectories in water. We then add a vortex phase to obtain a first-order Bessel-like acoustic beam. This beam exhibits a combination of features of vortex, Bessel, and Airy beams. Moreover, it maintains a dark "hole" in the center, preserving its angular momentum, and displays resistance to diffraction, self-healing, and self-bending during propagation. Furthermore, we experimentally realize the beam using a three-dimensionally printed phase mask and observe the acoustic field distribution using the Schlieren imaging method. Finally, we realize particle trapping and transport in a curved trajectory in water.
Anomalous diffusion of optical vortices in random wavefields

Abstract:We investigate the dynamic behavior of optical vortices, or phase singularities, in random wavefields and demonstrate the direct experimental observation of the anomalous diffusion of optical vortices. The observed subdiffusion of optical vortices show excellent agreement with the fractional Brownian motion, a Gaussian process. Paradoxically, the vortex displacements are observed exhibiting a non-Gaussian heavy-tailed distribution. We also tune the extent of subdiffusion and non-Gaussianity of optical vortex by varying the viscoelasticity of light scattering media. This complex motion of optical vortices is reminiscent of particles in viscoelastic environments suggesting a vortex tracking based microrheology approach. The fractional Brownian yet non-Gaussian subdiffusion of optical vortices may not only offer insights into the dynamics of phase singularities, but also contribute to the understanding certain general physics, including vortex diffusion in fluids and the decoupling between Brownian and Gaussian.

Abstract:Based on the nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation, the propagation properties of anomalous hollow beams in strongly isotropic nonlocal media are investigated. The analytical expressions of the beam propagation, the on-axis intensity and the beam width are obtained. The results show that the evolution of the beam is periodical and the input power is the most important parameter. The input power determines the variation of the period. Furthermore, it is found that there exists a critical input power in the x direction and in the y direction separately when the initial beam widths in the two transversal directions are unequal. The beam width remains invariant in the corresponding transversal direction when the input power equals the critical power in one of the transversal directions. Selecting a proper input power, the beam can be broadened or compressed in the two transversal directions at the same time. In particular, the beam can be broadened (compressed) in one transversal direction, whereas in the other transversal direction, it is compressed (broadened), i.e., the transversal reverse transformation.
