Abstract:Innovative thermochromic asphalt concrete incorporated with thermochromic materials have been designed to modulate the surface temperature of asphalt pavement (i.e., reduce pavement surface temperature during summer and increase the surface temperature during winter). Both aspects potentially improve the durability of pavement. A three-dimensional finite element model was proposed to simulate temperature characteristics of asphalt pavement using measured weather data in Cleveland, OH. The temperature simulation indicated that the surface temperature of asphalt concrete could be reduced up to 5.3 degrees C in May and increased up to 1.1 degrees C in February, respectively compared to conventional asphalt concrete. The corresponding temperature gradient across the pavement could be reduced up to 17 K/m and 14 K/m respectively. These effects concrete are beneficial to reduce high temperature related performance degradation of the pavement, to potentially enhance durability and safety of asphalt pavement, and to alleviate urban heat island effects.
