Abstract:PURPOSE To study the morbidity and mortality due to valvar surgical treatment performed concomitantly to myocardial revascularization. METHODS From 1650 patients submitted to mitral or aortic valve surgical treatment, 103 (6.24%) had it associated to myocardial revascularization. Coronary insufficiency was associated to aortic valvar lesion in 66 (64.0%) patients, group I, with mean age of 62.3 +/- 8 years; and in 37 (35.9%) patients with mitral valve lesion, group II, with mean age of 57.8 +/- 5.8 years. Diagnosis was based upon the anamnesis, physical examination and confirmed by cine-coronarographic findings. RESULTS I-Complications at the immediate postoperative; a) mortality 11 (10.6%) patients, 6 (9.09%) from group I: by low cardiac output 3, uncontrolled arrhythmia 1, mediastinitis 1; acute infarction with cardiogenic shock 1, and 5 (134.5%) of group II: uncontrolled hemorrhage 2, sudden death 1, saphenous vein graft occlusion, respiratory insufficiency and sepsis 2; b) controlled intercurrences that increased the time of hospitalization: mental disorder 5 patients; CVA 7, diabetes decompensation 2, worsening of chronic renal insufficiency 1, upper level digestive hemorrhage 1 and respiratory insufficiency 3 patients. II-late postoperative complications of 77 (83.6%) patients which could be followed up during a period of 60 months: 1) mortality: 3 (3.89%) patients; 2 due to cardiomyopathy and 1 by acute myocardial infarction; 2) late evolution-functional capacity III (NYHA) by cardiomyopathy 6; I/II 68 patients; mild angina 6 patients, 2 underwent revascularization at the end of final 36-42 months. CONCLUSION The clinical improvement and mortality indexes statistically similar to the isolate surgical acts stimulate us to keep up with such associate procedures.

Abstract:Conductors with high conductivity and stretchability are the crucial components of smart wearable electronics. However, most of the reported conductors have disadvantages of single function, high energy consumption, which seriously limit their application in wearable electronics. Here, a kind of stretchable (up to 373%), highly conductive (the same order of magnitude as commercial metal wire), and multifunctional sheath-core fibers based on liquid metal that can be continuously fabricated in large quantity through a coaxial wet-spinning process are reported. The simple preparation method of the fibers can realize continuous and mass production (1 m min–1 in the laboratory). When the fibers are used as an electric heater, the temperature can reach 58 °C at 0.6 V and the heating rate is obviously faster than the ambient temperature under infrared light. When the fibers are used as a wearable sensor, the tiny force of 0.001 cN can be detected and objects at less than 40 cm can be detected without contact. The stretchable fibers with high electric conductivity may provide strong supports for the commercialization of wearable electronics and pave the way toward full-fledged multifunctional wearable sensors.

Abstract:A hyperelastic percolative conductive composite is proposed with acetylene black (AB) as conductive filler introduced into Ecoflex (R) 00-30 elastomer matrix. The conductivity could be enhanced by several orders according to percolation theory and the Young's modulus could also be tailored by modifying AB volume ratio. The AB-Ecoflex composite exhibits electric conductivity high as 6.4 S.m(-1) and remains stable after 100 cycles at 200% strain. This composite with high conductivity, stretchability and stability shows high potential as a competitive candidate for wearable strain sensors to detect human body motions and for human-machine interface application. Full-field interferometry using infinity corrected optics

Abstract:In this paper the construction of full-field (imaging) interferometers using infinity corrected optics commonly used in microscopy is discussed, with an emphasis on self-mixing interferometry configurations where the imaged light field is mixed with itself rather than a reference wave. Such configurations are used in speckle shearing interferometry, flow visualisation and quantitative flow measurement. The critical considerations for constructing path-length imbalanced full-field interferometers for these and similar applications are discussed, expressions are derived for key calculations and interferograms from example interferometers are presented. These include the concept of balancing the infinity-spaces of the two arms via the use of a glass block to minimise the optical path difference variation across the interferogram and ensure adequate sampling of the fringes on the detector. Further, the use of tilted glass blocks in single-pass and double-pass arrangements is detailed for the generation and control of spatial carrier fringes without extensive realignment of the interferometer, and for phase shifting.
Liquid metal-integrated ultra-elastic conductive microfibers from microfluidics for wearable electronics

Abstract:Liquid metal (LM) has shown potential values in different areas. Attempts to implement LM are tending to develop new functions and make it versatile to improve its performance for practical applications. Here, we present an unprecedented LM-integrated ultra-elastic microfiber with distinctive features for wearable electronics. The microfiber with a polyurethane shell and an LM core was continuously generated by using a sequenced microfluidic spinning and injection method. Due to the precise fluid manipulation of microfluidics, the resultant microfiber could be tailored with tunable morphologies and responsive conductivities. We have demonstrated that the microfiber could act as dynamic force sensor and motion indicator when it was embedded into elastic films. In addition, the values of the LM-integrated ultra-elastic microfiber on energy conversions such as electro-magnetic or electro-thermal conversions have also been realized. These features indicate that LM-integrated microfiber will open up new frontiers in LM-integrated materials and the wearable electronics field.

Abstract:This research work investigates the fabrication of conductive hydrogel fibers. Ultrahigh conductivity, excellent mechanical properties, outstanding water stability, and fatigue resistance are achieved. The compact hierarchical structure and high crystallinity are attributed to the mechanism of the combined properties. The developed conductive hydrogel fibers show great potential in soft bioelectronics. Conductive hydrogel fibers exhibit great potential in soft robots, bioelectronics, and human–machine interfaces due to the unique combination of electrical conductivity, high water content, tissue‐like mechanical properties, and 1D structure. Despite significant advances in hydrogel technologies, the typical conductive hydrogel fibers show low conductivity ( 300%), and toughness (≈10 MJ m−2)), high water content (≈75%), outstanding water stability, and fatigue resistance properties. In addition, the processibility of conductive hydrogel yarns and fabrics are demonstrated and their potential application in bioelectronics. Overall, this work presents a preparation strategy for conductive hydrogel fibers, which will facilitate the advancement of soft electronics and may inspire structural construction in other polymers.

Abstract:Fiber-shaped electronics have attracted broad interests due to the surging demand for wearable devices in recent years. It is highly desired if we can design fiber or textile electronics that can respond to room temperature stimulus and be welded. In this work, we developed an efficient and scalable way to fabricate semiliquid metal coated conductive and weldable fibers in large quantity with various designed mechanical properties. The conductive fibers called Cu-Ga-In/fibers consist of natural and synthetic fiber cores, adhesive polymethacrylates coating and semiliquid metal (Cu-Ga-In) coating. Combining the unique mechanical properties of different fiber cores and high conductivity of Cu-Ga-In coating, conductive fibers with large tensile strength, knittability and strong stretchability are fabricated as high strength conductor, heater, and stretchable wire. Besides, Cu-Ga-In coating can realize liquid welding, response to room temperature stimulus and offer unique property of soft-stiffness switching. Finally, we demonstrated the applications of the Cu-Ga-In/fibers as 3D circuits and liquid bridges to reduce the resistance variation caused by the fiber stretching.

Abstract:Multifunctional fiber materials play a key role in the field of smart textiles. Temperature sensing and active thermal management are two important functions of smart fabrics, but few studies have combined both functions in a single fiber material. In this work, we demonstrate a temperature-sensing and in situ heating functionalized conductive polymer microfiber by exploiting its high electrical conductivity and thermoelectric properties. The conductive polymer microfibers were prepared by wet-spinning the PEDOT:PSS aqueous dispersion with ionic liquid additives, which was used to enhance the electrical and mechanical properties of the final microfibers. The thermoelectric properties of these microfibers were further studied. Due to their excellent flexibility and mechanical properties, these fibers can be easily integrated into commercial fabrics for the manufacture of smart textiles through knitting. We further demonstrated a smart glove with integrated temperature-sensing and in situ heating functions, and further explored thermoelectric fiber-based temperature-sensing array fabric. These works combine the thermoelectric properties and heating function of conductive polymer fibers, providing new insights that enable further development of high-performance, multifunctional wearable smart textiles.

Abstract:It remains a great challenge to fabricate all-polymer stretchable conductive fibers simultaneously presenting high mechanical robustness, high stretchability, and high conductivity through convenient and fast process, even though they exhibit great application potential in the intelligent wearable fields in replacement of the traditional metal wires or the liquid metal-based conductive fibers. In this paper, an all-polymeric fiber with core–shell structure is continuously produced through co-axial microfluidic spinning strategy. The composition of the fluids and the processing parameters of MST are regulated to adjust the size of the obtained PU@PEDOT:PSS fiber, and then optimizing its electric properties and the mechanical performances. The polyurethane (PU) elastic shell layer and the H 2 SO 4 -doped PEDOT:PSS conductive core provide the obtained composite fiber with a high conductivity exceeding 220 S m −1 , as well as an impressive stretchability up to above 400 % strain, thus endowing it with versatile intelligent wearable applications, including the super-sensitive strain sensor for human motions monitoring, textile-based triboelectric nanogenerator for self-powered impact sensing, and the electro-thermal conversion fabric for keep warming.

Abstract:An alternative magnetic field (AMF)-induced electrospun fibrous thermoresponsive composite actuator showing penetrable remote-control ability with fast response is shown here for the first time. The built-in heater of magnetothermal Fe3O4 nanoparticles in the actuator and the porous structure of the fibrous layer contribute to a fast actuation with a curvature of 0.4 mm−1 in 2 s. The higher loading amount of the Fe3O4 nanoparticles and higher magnetic field strength result in a faster actuation. Interestingly, the composite actuator showed a similar actuation even when it was covered by a piece of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) film, which shows a penetrable remote-control ability.

Abstract:Advances in electronic textiles (E‐textiles) for next‐generation wearable electronics have originated from making a balance between electrical and mechanical properties of stretchy conductive fibers. Despite such progress, the trade‐off issue is still a challenge when individual fibers are woven and/or stretched undesirably. Time‐consuming fiber weaving has limited practical uses in scalable E‐textiles. Here, a facile method is presented to fabricate ultra‐stretchable Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs)/polyurethane (PU) hybrid conductive fibers by modulating solvent diffusion accompanied by in situ chemical reduction and adopting a tough self‐healing polymer (T‐SHP) as an encapsulation layer. First, the controlled diffusivity determines how formation of AgNPs is spatially distributed inside the fiber. Specifically, when a solvent with large molecular weight is used, the percolated AgNP networks exhibit the highest conductivity (30 485 S cm−1) even at 300% tensile strain and durable stretching cyclic performance without severe cracks by virtue of the efficient strain energy dissipation of T‐SHP encapsulation layers. The self‐bondable properties of T‐SHP encapsulated fibers enables self‐weavable interconnects. Using the new integration, mechanical and electrical durability of the self‐bonded fiber interconnects are demonstrated while stretching biaxially. Furthermore, the self‐bonding assembly is further visualized via fabrication of a complex structured E‐textile.

Abstract:High strength and flexible electronic textiles show promise in aerospace, robotics, and extreme environment applications, while it is indispensable to develop functionally integrated fiber building blocks with durable materials performance. Here we report multifunctional sensory e-textiles driven by using copper-grafted polyaramid (Kevlar®) fiber networks for the integrated electromagnetic interference shielding, thermal and pressure sensing. The hierarchical structural design and synthesis of flexible conductive networks is accomplished via the synergistic coordination between molecular copper complex and Kevlar® fibers, which facilitate long-term cyclability, stability, and washability. Superior Joule heating capabilities with a rapid thermal response under a low driving voltage (with a heating rate of 6 oC/s and a cooling-down rate of 5.8 oC/s), together with a high level of EMI shielding (71 dB from 8 to 13 GHz), resulting from its multilayered, vertically-aligned structure with continuous percolation of conductive coating. This work presents a new and feasible grafting approach for the large-scale fabrication of multifunctional wearable e-textiles.

Abstract:Low water vapor and air permeability is a persistent challenge in wearable and on-skin electronics, as it reduces wearing comfort, and leads to skin irritation and inflammation in the long term. To tackle this issue, Zheng and coworkers designed a stretchable conductor based on an elastomeric fiber mat coated by liquid metal. After simple activation via stretching, the flexible conductor was endowed with excellent permeability, good stretchability, exceptional electrical stability, and good biocompatibility, ascribed to the mesh-like structure and the vertically buckled structure of the liquid metal. Based on the intriguing properties of the material, it was employed in a multi-functional wearable device, able to detect the heartbeat and sweat while serving as a heating device. Wet-Spinning Carbon Nanotube/Shape Memory Polymer Composite Fibers with High Actuation Stress and Predesigned Shape Change

Abstract:Actuators based on shape memory polymers and composites incorporating nanomaterial additives have been extensively studied; achieving both high output stress and precise shape change by low-cost, scalable methods is a long-term-desired yet challenging task. Here, conventional polymers (polyurea) and carbon nanotube (CNT) fillers are combined to fabricate reinforced composite fibers with exceptional actuation performance, by a wet-spinning method amenable for continuous production. It is found that a thermal-induced shrinkage step could obtain densified strong fibers, and the presence of CNTs effectively promotes the tensile orientation of polymer molecular chains, leading to much improved mechanical properties. Consequently, the CNT/ polyurea composite fibers exhibit stresses as high as 33 MPa within 0.36 s during thermal actuation, and stresses up to 22 MPa upon electrical stimulation enabled by the built-in conductive CNT networks. Utilizing the flexible thin fibers, various shape change behavior are also demonstrated including the conversion between different structures/curvatures, and recovery of predefined simple patterns. This high-performance composite fibers, capable of both thermal and electrical actuation and produced by low-cost materials and fabrication process, may find many potential applications in wearable devices, robotics, and biomedical areas.

Abstract:Using intelligent textiles for clothing represents one possibility for weavable superelastic conducting fibers that can store energy, sense body motions, and detect biochemicals. On page 4998, S. Yin, R. H. Baughman, and co-workers demonstrate that these hair-like-diameter fibers, comprising buckled carbon nanotube sheaths on a rubber core, can be used as glucose sensors, supercapacitors, ultrafast strain sensors, and electrical interconnectors. The performance of these structures is maintained also under giant strain.

Abstract:Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs), consisting of polymer networks and liquid crystal mesogens, show a reversible phase change under thermal stimuli. However, the kinetic performance is limited by the inherently low thermal conductivity of the polymers. Transforming amorphous bulk into a fiber enhances thermal conductivity through the alignment of polymer chains. Challenges are present due to their rigid networks, while cross-links are crucial for deformation. Here, we employ hydrodynamic alignment to orient the LCE domains assisted by controlled in situ cross-linking and to remarkably reduce the diameter to submicrons. We report that the intrinsic thermal conductivity of LCE fibers at room temperature reaches 1.44 ± 0.32 W/m-K with the sub-100 nm diameter close to the upper limit determined in the quasi-1D regime. Combining the outstanding thermal conductivity and thin diameters, we anticipate these fibers to exhibit a rapid response and high force output in thermomechanical systems. The fabrication method is expected to apply to other cross-linked polymers.

Abstract:High-performance and intelligent fibers are indispensable parts of wearable electronics in the future. This work mainly demonstrates the preparation of flexible intelligent liquid metal (LM) fibers with three core-sheath structures. An ultra-thin (10-50 μm), conductive, and highly flexible LM was deposited on the fiber core [carbon/polyethylene terephthalate (C/PET)--150-500 μm] along the fiber direction and then deposited on a polymer-protective layer [polyvinyl alcohol/epoxy resin (PVA/EP)--10 μm]. Four kinds of LM intelligent fibers were manufactured, including the C-LM-PVA fiber, C-LM-EP fiber, PET-LM-PVA fiber, and PET-LM-EP fiber. These LM intelligent fibers (diameter, 150-600 μm) were demonstrated with a high conductivity of 7.839 × 10 S·m. The changes in resistance in different torsion directions were measured, and these smart LM fibers could also be used as electrical heaters or thermoelectric generators, which released heat (36-36.9 °C/1-1.5 V) into the environment. Then, these multifunctional LM fibers were applied as high-performance strain sensors and bending sensors. These flexible LM conductive fibers could be successfully utilized in intelligent wearable fabrics and were expected to be widely utilized in artificial muscle and sensor fields.
