Combining the method of constructing Green functions with operators defined piecewise, the existence result of positive solutions to a singular second order three-point boundary value problem is established. It is seen that the structure of solutions relies on the boundary values. The global branches of solutions of the boundary value problems are established. Abstract:This paper is concerned with the following semilinear elliptic equations of the formwhere ε is a small positive parameter, and where f and g denote superlinear and subcritical nonlinearity. Suppose that b(x) has at least one maximum. We prove that the system has a ground-state solution (ψε, φε) for all sufficiently small ε > 0. Moreover, we show that (ψε, φε) converges to the ground-state solution of the associated limit problem and concentrates to a maxima point of b(x) in certain sense, as ε → 0. Furthermore, we obtain sufficient conditions for nonexistence of ground-state solutions.

Abstract:In this paper we outline a general method for finding well-posed boundary value problems for linear equations of mixed elliptic and hyperbolic type, which extends previous techniques of Berezanskii, Didenko, and Friedrichs. This method is then used to study a particular class of fully nonlinear mixed type equations which arise in applications to differential geometry.

Abstract:Boundary Element Methods have become a major numerical tool in scientific and engineering problem-solving, with particular applications to numerical computations and simulations of partial differential equations in engineering. Two-point Boundary Value Problems for Wave Equations

Abstract:In this paper we introduce some new concepts for second-order hyperbolic equations: two-point boundary value problem, global exact controllability and exact controllability. For several kinds of important linear and nonlinear wave equations arising from physics and geometry, we prove the existence of smooth solutions of the two-point boundary value problems and show the global exact controllability of these wave equations. In particular, we investigate the two-point boundary value problem for one-dimensional wave equation defined on a closed curve and prove the existence of smooth solution which implies the exact controllability of this kind of wave equation. Furthermore, based on this, we study the two-point boundary value problems for the wave equation defined on a strip with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions and show that the equation still possesses the exact controllability in these cases. Finally, as an application, we introduce the hyperbolic curvature flow and obtain a result analogous to the well-known theorem of Gage and Hamilton for the curvature flow of plane curves.
Critical Points for Elliptic Equations with Prescribed Boundary Conditions

Abstract:This paper concerns the existence of critical points for solutions to second order elliptic equations of the form $\nabla\cdot \sigma(x)\nabla u=0$ posed on a bounded domain $X$ with prescribed boundary conditions. In spatial dimension $n=2$, it is known that the number of critical points (where $\nabla u=0$) is related to the number of oscillations of the boundary condition independently of the (positive) coefficient $\sigma$. We show that the situation is different in dimension $n\geq3$. More precisely, we obtain that for any fixed (Dirichlet or Neumann) boundary condition for $u$ on $\partial X$, there exists an open set of smooth coefficients $\sigma(x)$ such that $\nabla u$ vanishes at least at one point in $X$. By using estimates related to the Laplacian with mixed boundary conditions, the result is first obtained for a piecewise constant conductivity with infinite contrast, a problem of independent interest. A second step shows that the topology of the vector field $\nabla u$ on a subdomain is not modified for appropriate bounded, sufficiently high-contrast, smooth coefficients $\sigma(x)$. These results find applications in the class of hybrid inverse problems, where optimal stability estimates for parameter reconstruction are obtained in the absence of critical points. Our results show that for any (finite number of) prescribed boundary conditions, there are coefficients $\sigma(x)$ for which the stability of the reconstructions will inevitably degrade.

Abstract:We generalize the main result on existence of nonzero nonnegative solutions of systems of second order elliptic boundary value problems obtained by Lan (2011). The motivation for the generalization is to propose and study the competition models of Ricker and Beverton–Holt types governed by such systems. To the best of our knowledge, there is little study on such continuous competition models although such difference equation and first order ordinary differential equation competition models have been widely studied. Our results enrich and develop the connections among the classical fixed point index theory, systems of second order elliptic boundary value problems and population dynamics.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove a multiple critical points theorem and a nonexistence result for the eigenvalues of the p-Laplacian operator in the half space. As an application, we study the existence of positive (negative) solutions and sign-changing solutions for the boundary value problem of p-Laplacian equation in the half space, namely: {−Δpu=0in R+N|Du|p−2∂u∂n+λg(x)|u|p−2u=f(u)on ∂R+N, where 1<p<N,Δpu=div(|Du|p−2Du),λ is a positive parameter, g is a nonnegative function and f is p-superlinear at zero and asymptotically p-linear at infinity.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the mixed initial-boundary value problem for quasilinear hyperbolic systems with nonlinear boundary conditions in a half-unbounded domain {(t, x)\ t greater than or equal to 0, x greater than or equal to 0}. Under the assumption that, the positive eigenvalues are weakly linearly degenerate, we obtain the global existence and uniqueness of C-1 solution with small and decaying initial data. Some applications are given for the system of the planar motion of an elastic string.

Abstract:In the present paper, we consider the parabolic and hyperbolic inequalities with a singular potentials and with a critical nonlinearities in the annulus domain. The problems are studied with Neumann-type and Dirichlet-type boundary conditions on the boundary. Moreover, we study the systems of problems too. We have proved that the above problems are globally unsolvable in critical cases, thereby filling the gaps the recent results by Jleli and Samet in [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 514: 2 (2022)] and in [Anal. Math. Phys. 12: 90 (2022)]. Proofs are carried out using the method of test functions with logarithmic arguments, which is being developed for the first time in bounded domains.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the boundary value problem of the classical semilinear parabolic equations $$ u_t-\Delta u=|u|^{p-1}u, \ \ in \ \ \Omega\times (0,T) $$ and $u=0$ on the boundary $\partial\Omega\times [0,T)$ and $u=\phi$ at $t=0$, where $\Omega\subset R^n$ is a compact $C^1$ domain, $1<p\leq p_S$ is a fixed constant, and $\phi\in C^2_0(\Omega)$ is a given smooth function. Introducing new idea, we show that there are two sets $\tilde{W}$ and $\tilde{Z}$ such that for $\phi\in W$, there is a global positive solution $u(t)\in \tilde{W}$ with $h^1$ omega limit $\{0\}$ and for $\phi\in \tilde{Z}$, the solution blows up at finite time.

Abstract:In this article, we describe an approach for solving partial differential equations with general boundary conditions imposed on arbitrarily shaped boundaries. A continuous function, the domain parameter, is used to modify the original differential equations such that the equations are solved in the region where a domain parameter takes a specified value while boundary conditions are imposed on the region where the value of the domain parameter varies smoothly across a short distance. The mathematical derivations are straightforward and generically applicable to a wide variety of partial differential equations. To demonstrate the general applicability of the approach, we provide four examples herein: (1) the diffusion equation with both Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions; (2) the diffusion equation with both surface diffusion and reaction; (3) the mechanical equilibrium equation; and (4) the equation for phase transformation with the presence of additional boundaries. The solutions for several of these cases are validated against corresponding analytical and semi-analytical solutions. The potential of the approach is demonstrated with five applications: surface-reaction-diffusion kinetics with a complex geometry, Kirkendall-effect-induced deformation, thermal stress in a complex geometry, phase transformations affected by substrate surfaces, and a self-propelled droplet.

Abstract:We study a class of boundary value problems with $\varphi$-Laplacian (e.g., the prescribed mean curvature equation, in which $\varphi(s)=\frac{s}{\sqrt{1+s^2}}$) \begin{center} $-\left(\varphi(u')\right)'=\lambda f(u)\; \text{ on }(-L, L),\quad u(-L)=u(L)=0,$ \end{center} where $\lambda$ and $L$ are positive parameters. For convex $f$ with $f(0)=0$, we establish various results on the exact number of positive solutions as well as global bifurcation diagrams. Some new bifurcation patterns are shown. This paper is a continuation of Pan and Xing [13], where the case $f(0)>0$ has been investigated.
