Abstract:The rapid pace of Chinas economic and trade development has been considered as a great success since the entry of WTO in 2001. Most recently, China has succeeded in coping with the global financial crisis and achieved a rapid V-shaped recovery which rebounded to two digit growth rate and lead to strengthening its international status. Nevertheless, China has exposed many potential problems in face of the financial crisis which due to international and domestic unbalanced features of Chinas economic operation system. The pattern of China Manufacturing and World Consuming is a game with no winners, while the investment leaded economic development mode achieves high growth rate but without enriches its own residents. The current imbalanced economic development mode cannot be sustained and shall be changed in the future which is not only the consensus of economists at home and abroad, but also a striving goal for the Chinese government for its 12th Five-Year Plan. However, China will face great and formidable challenges by changing the economic development mode to achieve an equilibrium state.

Abstract:Is macroeconomic stability the Achilles heel of the Chinese economy? Recurrent bouts of inflationary disorder lead some observers to worry that the Chinese government is unable to control the economy. Macroeconomic difficulties show up in a pattern of repeated boom and bust cycles, in which each boom is accompanied by an acute inflationary phase and significant disruption. Moreover, since the reform era began, the peak annual inflation rate of each successive cycle has been higher than that of the preceding one. The most recent attempts to cool off the economy have only led to additional questions. An austerity policy was decreed at the end of June 1993, yet inflation actually accelerated in 1994, and it was not until mid-1995 that it dropped to the levels of mid-1993. The Chinese government was engaged in a quest for an economic “soft landing” for two years without a net reduction in the inflation rate!

Abstract:The present paper explores the role of China in the creation of the current global financial crisis and the impacts of the crisis on its economy. It argues against the view that the “saving glut” in China (along with other Asian emerging economies) played a significant causal role in the crisis. The global financial crisis did not engender much damage in China's financial structure, thanks to the relatively closed, bank-centered financial system. However, the impacts on the “real” side of the Chinese economy were hard felt. Growth and employment have fallen, largely due to the decline in exports and foreign direct investment. The crisis reveals the vulnerability of the export-dependent growth pattern. Policy responses of the Chinese Government, including monetary, fiscal and social policies, have helped to stem the downfall of the economy in the immediate term, but some of the policies have not addressed the structural problems of the Chinese economy and might well aggravate such problems over time. The present paper proposes a tentative reform blueprint to rebalance the economy and to sustain long-term growth.

Abstract:China’s impressive development and modernization have entered into a politically and economically sensitive phase with the mounting external containment to suppress theseemingly unstoppable momentum of its continuous rise and the internal demand for sustainable growth and qualitative upgrading of the Chinese economy. At the current moment, the US and China are tightly locked in a fierce interstate competition due to A)China’s unfulfilled aspiration to become a true global superpower with the ability to redefine and revise the existing rules of the game set by the US-led global West and B) the strategicdesperation on the part of the US to sustain and prolong the deteriorating unipolar world order and reverse its relative decline. In a general sense, I tend to believe the Chinese economy is at the crossroads of developmentand evolution at the current moment. China has been gradually losing its demographicadvantages over time to aging and lower birth rate. Increasing productivity, rising income per capita and reinforcing its competitive position in the global economic system through technological innovation and advancement seem to be a both inevitable and promising avenueto elevate the Chinese economy onto a higher level of sophistication with improvedsustainability in the long run. However, the US has resorted to the strictly enforced“technology embargo”, especially the recent “chip ban”, to decisively block, or at least, hold back China’s rapid advancement in a wide range of strategically critical industries, such as artificial intelligence (AI), hypersonic missile development, aerospace engineering, quantum computing, and smart or self-driving (electronic) car etc. Therefore, in this article, I intend tocritically discuss how and why the Chinese economy is, once again, in a major crisis since thehugely successful, comprehensive reform in the late 1970s and what could be possibly done to safeguard the Chinese economy during a highly unpredictable and remarkably turbulent time of steadily mounting internal and external challenges.Key words: the Chinese economy, technological development, Sino-US interstate competition and the “China Model”.

Abstract:The world financial turmoil brought China an unprecedented economic decline.The traditional macro-control ideas for stimulating the economy will lead to greater economic losses,and will touch on social issues.So the correct macro-control idea should be: The people's livelihood security should be put on the first place.The government should pay attention on the role of consumption because every investment must be depended on the requirement of consumption.The priority should be consumption and then construction.In the economic recession period,China need carefully use of domestic resources,carefully choose stimulating economic means,avoiding blindly consumption of national savings,and minimizing the waste of investments.Anyway,China should preserve the strength in the severe winter,spend great efforts to solve the problem of excess production capacity,minimize the gap between rich and poor,adjust of economic structure,and keeping the social development in balance.

Abstract:This introduction to a new collection of perspectives on the Chinese economy’s past, present, and future does not summarize the entries in the book. It provides the editors’ personal perspectives on the economics of China — past experience and future prospects. The reading of China’s economic development over the past thirty-five years raises two major sets of issues, one of which is inward looking, and the other of which is outward looking. While Chinese aggregate development is impressive, it has raised the question of whether the level of growth is sustainable, and has led to a set of distributional issues and well-being concerns. It is argued that these internal issues combine with those raised by China’s rapid integration and ever growing presence in the international arena to frame the challenges faced by China in the next thirty-five years, as it approaches the 100th anniversary of the People’s Republic in 2049.

Abstract:In the context of an increasingly interconnected global economy, deciphering the complex ripple effects of external financial disruptions on national economies is a task of utmost significance. This article dives deep into the intricate repercussions of such disturbances on the macroeconomic dynamics of China using the example of the potential insolvency of a Silicon Valley bank. Grounded in empirical scrutiny, we leverage data spanning from Q1 2000 to Q1 2022 and the analytical utility of the impulse response function to illuminate our findings. We find that external financial tumult triggers a global recession, adversely impacting China's export-driven economy while simultaneously unsettling aggregate output, employment levels, and wage stability. Simultaneously, these disruptions induce variability in consumption tendencies, investment trajectories, and import volumes and inject instability into interest rate paradigms. We also acknowledge the potential for currency depreciation and bank insolvency incidents to induce inflationary stresses, primarily by escalating the costs of imports. However, these inflationary tendencies may be offset by the concomitant economic slowdown and diminished demand inherent to global recessions. Importantly, the tightening of global credit conditions, coupled with existing financial ambiguities, may obstruct investment initiatives, curtail imports, and exert influence on both risk-free and lending interest rates. Our investigation also probes into the response of the Chinese government's monetary policy to these external financial shocks. Despite the vital role of monetary policy in alleviating the impacts of these shocks, the potential secondary effects on China's domestic economy warrant attention. Our study underscores the imperative of proper policy design rooted in a profound understanding of the intricate economic interdependencies for effective management and mitigation of the potentially detrimental consequences of such financial upheavals on China's macroeconomic resilience within the tapestry of a tightly knit global financial ecosystem.

Abstract:Since 2009–2010, China has developed a distinctive set of international economic policies that were by no means inevitable. These policies grew out of the unusual economic events that marked the first part of the twenty-first century—including the Global Financial Crisis (GFC)—and from the determination the Chinese leaders displayed thereafter to exert worldwide global economic influence. The broad policy orientation that grew from these forces can be best considered by examining two complex policy initiatives: renminbi internationalization and the Belt and Road Initiative. Each can be seen as a response to the surplus of domestic saving that emerged in the wake of sustained rapid economic growth, and they are to a certain extent competing strategies. The chapter also assesses China’s overall international economic position as of 2018. It concludes with some prognostications about the future of China’s position in the global economy.

Abstract:This paper provides a brief review of the increasing importance of China in the world economy and discusses the spillover effects of the global financial crisis on China's financial markets and macroeconomy. It presents and critiques alternative ways of estimating these effects. Contrary to much popular discussion, China was hit fairly hard by the global recession generated by the financial crisis. It suffered a huge drop in exports, and these effects on the economy were only partially offset by China's huge stimulus program. While growth remained well above international averages, its drop was of the same order of magnitude as for the United States. The paper closes with a brief discussion of some of the major challenges facing China to rebalance its economy in order to sustain high growth.

Abstract:World economic recession caused by the subprime mortgage crisis is still continuing. China, as an emerging market economy, has also been affected. Although its main financial sectors such as banking, securities, and insurances, have not been troubled directly, the real economy related sectors including the foreign trade production and social consumption, have been influenced severely. Since the beginning of last year, a great number of enterprises and factories have been going bankrupt or shut down, and it seems the situation is getting worse at this moment. China is the largest market in the world. The 30 years’ rapid economic development since the implementation of reform and open door policy in 1978 has made Chinese market system more perfect day by day. China has accumulated huge and abundant national asset and wealth, which is the fundamental element for China to face the challenges and overcome the influence of financial crisis and the world’s economic recession. However, the problem lies in the fact of the weak Chinese financial system itself: the financial openness is in its infancy and seriously lacking innovation. Furthermore, Chinese financial market remains relatively closed and opaque, it also fails to make full use of global resources or claim rights of asset pricing in the world market. In some sense, the conservative and less developed financial market in China has blocked the direct impacts of the world financial crisis on China’s economy.

Abstract:A noted American authority and investigator of China's economy outlines the general features of the ongoing reorientation of Chinese economic policymaking toward increased state activism, which has gained momentum in the aftermath of the global financial crisis. An initial section of the paper describes the marketization and privatization initiatives of China's late reform period to provide a baseline against which to measure the subsequent shift toward increased state intervention and guidance in the economy. The author traces the shift in three critical policy arenas (social policy, state-owned enterprises, and industrial and technology policy) and demonstrates how state involvement in each intensified during the global financial crisis. He then proceeds to explore the implications of accelerated state activism in the future, identifying potential rewards as well as large risks. Among the latter are macroeconomic imbalances, a "softening" of budget constraints, difficulties in recognizing and terminating unsuccessful economic programs, and tensions with trading partners.

Abstract:This paper assesses the sources of potential instability of China's political economy by expositing the limits of the post-Mao regime of capital accumulation in historical and comparative perspectives. It argues that the new spatial and socio-political orders under this regime, while propelling China's economic miracle, also contribute to the internalization of the global overaccumulation crisis, which has been haunting the world capitalist system since the late 1960s, into China's national economy. Whereas decentralization of regulatory authority of the state accelerates overinvestment among local economic agents, breakdown of the Maoist social compact and the subsequent class polarization foster underconsumption. The resulting structural imbalance of the economy leads to the risk of falling profit across key sectors and China's over-reliance on the export market, the expansion of which has hinged much on the debt-financed and unsustainable consumption spree in the US. A full-fledged overaccumulation crisis within China in the form of extensive bankruptcy of enterprise, surging unemployment and financial turmoil will certainly trigger extensive global repercussions, given China's weight in the global economy. This crisis, nonetheless, is not inevitable, and can plausibly be averted through a recentralization of the state's economic regulatory functions and income redistribution. No matter whether and how such a crisis unfolds, nonetheless, it is not likely to stop the shift of the center of gravity of global capitalism to Asia in the long run.

Abstract:As the three driving forces of economic growth have all fallen, the Chinese economy comes to the crossroad once again. The current predicament is, to a large extent, an end to the old model of equilibrium, namely, a growth pattern dependent on external demand and investment. A shift from the model of "globalization-growth driven by foreign demand" toward that of "urbanization-growth driven by domestic demand" has become an irreversible trend. The transition from the past "fast growth" to the current "steady growth" is actu-ally a change of equilibrium. How to seek a balance between "fast growth with low quality" and "slow growth with high quality" is a serious challenge for the Party's governance capability.
The Mechanism of Our Country Macroeconomic Shock by International Floating Capital Inflow

Abstract:An enormous amount of international floating capital has flooded the Chinese market in the recent years.There have been two stages in the development of the scale of international floating capital inflow and the characteristics of its capital investment.In the beginning,it went into those industries of rapid growth while recently it focuses on the real property industry in the Yangtze River Delta.The volume of capital in the second stage is five times larger than that in the first stage.The massive capital inflow has brought uncertain exterior impact on China's macro economy,which can be obviously seen in nominal variables and actual variables in the economy.Five nominal variables are clearly visible:(1) Because of fixed exchange system and strict exchange rate regulation,the Central Bank has to intervene with the foreign exchange market and the supply of foreign exchange.Money supply is rapidly increasing due to the influx of floating capital.(2) RMB rate has kept stable for a long time because of the government resolute attitude in recalling part of the currency issued through state debt either via open market operation at the secondary market or refinancing by the Central Bank.The existing ternary antinomy implies that the current exchange system is not in line with the demand of the economic development in the long run and a floating exchange system should be established.(3) The floating capital has both a direct and an indirect impact on price.The indirect shock is not evident via money supply,while the direct impact is particularly evident.(4) On the one hand,interest rate impact is an indirect process due to the contra of money supply by the Central Bank's policy.It is an exogenous variable.Therefore,interest rate shock is not very obvious.(5) The influx stimulates a highly speculative stock market,which might result in domestic economy contraction.There are two actual variables:(1) Huge implicit opportunity losses have taken place in recent years due to a steep rise in the exchange reserves.(2) The economic structure can be strongly affected.The most important task today is to weaken the anticipation of RMB appreciation. Government attitude to keep RMB rate stable alone does not eliminate the anticipation.The major task is to reform the system of RMB rate and adopt a floating RMB system,to reestablish the policy of exchange reserves and,finally,to take a more cautious attitude in capital inflow liberalization in a short time.

Abstract:During the first half of 2003, rapid growth in China led many to proclaim the emergence of an economic “bubble.” Extremely rapid growth of money and credit was accompanied by rapid growth in investment, especially in the housing market. Chinese policymakers have taken steps to restrain the bubble, and these measures are now having an impact. During this first phase, the emergence of the bubble and the way that it was handled seem to have strengthened the positions of both Premier Wen Jiabao and Central Bank Governor Zhou Xiaochuan. However, the rapid emergence of the bubble economy reveals some unsettling realities about the Chinese economy. Moreover, the bubble portends important shifts in the economic payoffs and challenges that lie ahead for the political leadership.

Abstract:China's economic success has bred a new complacency and resistance to change. This in turn has created a credibility crisis, as many Chinese citizens believe the opposition of vested interests makes reform impossible. However, proponents of economic reform argue that the current economic strategy is unsustainable. They point to reform backsliding, overinvestment, and financial fragility as problems that will collide with an inevitable economic slowdown caused by rapid demographic changes, and that will potentially cause economic and political crisis. Renewed economic reform is thus the only prudent and viable choice. The November 2013 Third Plenum shows that China's leaders have tentatively accepted the need for reform.

Abstract:In the lead-up to China's five-yearly National Party Congress late in 2017, attempts to resolve conflicts between short-term growth and structural reform have tended to favour immediate growth. The new model of growth requires new economy sectors to grow much more rapidly than traditional (post-1978) sectors. For a while, this was proceeding well, but in late 2016 and during 2017 there have been signs of priority for growth and therefore traditional sectors over the new economy. Favouring growth over reform introduces risk into longer-term growth prospects.
