Abstract:The use of traffic signals has become the main means of controlling traffic at busy road junctions in built-up areas and for providing pedestrian crossing facilities. Significant progress has been made in recent years in improving traffic control systems using new vehicle and pedestrian detection technologies, enhanced microprocessor capabilities and new real-time control strategies. However, traffic signal control strategies are often still dominated by concepts of vehicle delay minimisation, with pedestrian facilities included where required, but rarely optimised (e.g. in terms of minimising pedestrian delay). With transport policies focusing increasingly on the need to promote walking, cycling and public transport, improved facilities for these road user groups are becoming ever more important. This paper describes a new simulation model, FLOWSIM_PX, which models signalised pedestrian crossing facilities at mid-block locations. The model can be used to compare different traffic and pedestrian control strategies. Measures of performance include pedestrian and vehicle delays and pedestrian compliance with signal aspects. Among the control strategies modelled are the Pelican and Puffin control strategies, as used in the UK.
