Abstract:The effects of the geometry, arrangement and number of embedded rectangular barriers on the mixing performance for three types of wavy micro-channels were investigated by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. The mass transportation model based on the flow field was applied to simulate the mixing process, in terms of mixing snapshots and fluids mixing rate. The averaged fluid line stretching and Lyapunov exponent were used to characterize the chaotic behavior, which was induced by the periodic velocity field in the micro-channels, due to the V-shaped grooves and barriers. By setting the barriers slantwise or changing its geometry and number, chaos was further enhanced, reinforcing the fluids mixing more effectively. The mixing performance of each mixer by different Peclet number Pe was studied, and the dimension-one mixing length was found to grow linearly with ln Pe.

Abstract:A new helical micro-mixer was designed.In order to illuminate the mixing efficiency,the diffusion and mixing of the species in the helical micro-mixer were simulatied numerically.The results show that the mixing efficiency is much better than that of in the straight micro-channel and obviously better than that of in the serpentine microchannel because of the layered structure and more contact areas,when the Reynolds number being low.The mixing efficiency is also much better than that of in the straight channel,but no obvious difference from that of in serpentine microchannel when the Reynolds number being bigger,because the convection dominates the flow.

Abstract:For the practical applications of droplet‐based microfluidics, we have paid special attention to the complex hydrodynamics and mixing performance inside microdroplets and the profound process intensification when forcing the droplets to move in winding channels. In this work, experimental studies using micro laser induced fluorescence (μ‐LIF) technique and three‐dimensional simulation based on a multiphase, multicomponents lattice Boltzmann model approach were adopted. The simulation results clearly revealed that the mixing inside the droplet is due to the convection in symmetric vortices in the two hemispheres of the droplet and the diffusion between them. They also showed the fluids inside the droplet could be reoriented due to the winding effect. Three designs of winding channels were studied, where interesting results showed the similar effect of process intensification by breaking up the flow symmetry. The revealed flow mechanism and the mixing performance inside the droplet in droplet‐based microfluidics should be helpful for microdevice design and optimization. © 2012 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 59: 1801–1813, 2013
Numerical Simulation of the Scalar Mixing Characteristics in Three-dimensional Microchannels

Abstract:Based on the transport phenomena theory, the passive mixing of water and ethanol in different threedimensional microchannels is simulated numerically. The average variance of water volume fraction is used to index the mixing efficiency in the cases with different Reynolds number and different fabricated mixers. The results show that the efficiency of liquid mixing is progressively dependent on the convective transport as the Reynolds number increases. The efficiency of serpentine microchannel decreases with the increasing Reynolds number in the laminar regime. Altering the aspect ratio of channel inlet section has no significant effect on the mixing efficiency. Increasing the area of channel inlet section will cause the decrease of the mixing efficiency. The mixing in serpentine channels is the most efficient among three different mixers because of the existence of second flow introduced by its special structure.

Abstract:Focusing particles into a tight stream is usually a necessary step prior to counting, detecting and sorting them. Meanwhile, particle spacing control in microfluidic devices could also be applied in the field of accurate cell detection, material synthesis and chemical reaction. To achieve simultaneous particle focusing and spacing control, a novel microchannel composed by Dean and sheath flow section was proposed and fabricated according to the elaborated design principle with its manipulating performance in situ visualized. Using microspheres with a few microns as a template, the trajectory of the particles was discovered to follow lateral migration and reach certain equilibrium positions at the end of the designed Dean section. After being focused, the streamline was further concentrated and centralized with a controllable interparticle distance in sheath flow section. For sheath flow section, the angle between symmetrical tributaries and the mainstream channel and abrupt constriction/expansion structure of mainstream channel as important channel geometric features were investigated to minimize the focusing streamline width and optimize spacing control. An modified analytical model for sheath flow with different tributary angles was derived and proved to well describe the microsphere spacing control process.
Study on the mixing of fluid in curved microchannels with heterogeneous surface potentials

Abstract:In this paper the mixing of a sample in the curved microchannel with heterogeneous surface potentials is analysed numerically by using the control-volume-based finite difference method. The rigorous models for describing the wall potential and external potential are solved to get the distribution of wall potential and external potential, then momentum equation is solved to get the fully developed flow field. Finally the mass transport equation is solved to get the concentration field. The results show that the curved microchannel has an optimized capability of sample mixing and transport when the heterogeneous surface is located at the left conjunction between the curved part and straight part. The variation of heterogeneous surface potential psi(n) has more influence on the capability of sample mixing than on that of sample transport. The ratio of the curved microchannel's radius to width has a comparable effect on the capability of sample mixing and transport. The conclusions above are helpful to the optimization of the design of microfluidic devices for the improvement of the efficiency of sample mixing.

Abstract:This paper reports a microfluidic reactor for synthesizing micro- and nano-droplets using fluid shearing instability of immiscible flow in microchannels. Three factors, flow rate between the two inputs, spout geometry and surface tension are numerically studied. Based on the simulation, a device with the optimal parameters was fabricated and tested. Both computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation results and experimental results suggested that this technique is capable of conveniently controlling the droplets sizes from hundreds of micrometers down to several micrometers or even nanometers. This pilot research offers a proof-of-concept demonstration using instabilities in the microchannels to synthesize large quantity of microdroplets. Although the microdroplets in this study were formed by DI water containing Tween20 and silicon oil, the design with modification could be applied for synthesis of other types of micro- and nano-droplets.

Abstract:In the current research work, the flow behavior of a liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) process in a serpentine microchannel was analyzed. The simulation was performed using a 3D model and the results were found to be consistent with experimental data. The impact of the flow of chloroform and water on the flow model was also examined. The data indicate that once the aqua and organic phases flow rates are low and similar, a slug flow pattern is observed. However, as the overall flow rate raises, the slug flow transforms into parallel plug flow or droplet flow. An increment in the aqua flows while maintaining a constant organic phase flow rate results in a transition from slug flow to either droplet flow or plug flow. Finally, the patterns of flow rate in the serpentine micro-channel were characterized and depicted. The results of this study will provide valuable insights into the behavior of two-phase flow patterns in serpentine microfluidic devices. This information can be used to optimize the design of microfluidic devices for various applications. Furthermore, the study will demonstrate the applicability of CFD simulation in investigating the behavior of fluids in microfluidic devices, which can be a cost-effective and efficient alternative to experimental studies.

Droplet-based mixing characteristics in bumpy serpentine microchannel

Abstract:In the present study, a three-dimensional unsteady model is developed via coupling volume-of-fluid (VOF) method with component transport model to investigate the droplet-based mixing in the bumpy serpentine microchannel with different bumps structures. The hydrodynamics underlying the droplet-based mixing in bumpy serpentine microchannel is revealed and the influences of layout and number of bumps on comprehensive mixing performance inside the droplets with different size are clarified. The results indicate that, centrifugal component immersion and component entrainment by the nonuniform vortices in droplet are two main factors for promoting droplet-based mixing in serpentine microchannel. The centrifugal component immersion can be enhanced by the outside bumps of bumpy serpentine microchannel but suppressed by the inside bumps. Owing to lower viscous friction, the pressure drop in the serpentine microchannel with outside bumps is less than that with inside bumps, causing higher mixing efficiency. There is an optimal bump number for the best absolute mixing performance for a fixed flow condition in the serpentine microchannel with outside bumps, when the interval between the adjacent bumps is nearly as same as the squeezed droplet length. The absolute mixing performance of the larger droplet is smaller and less sensitive to the variation of the bump number.

Abstract:Owing to the enhancement of surface effects at the micro-scale, patterned grooves on a microchannel remain a powerful method to induce chaotic advection within a pressure driven system. Since the staggered oriented ridges static micromixers are presented, there are few results in the literature about the geometric effects of such micromixer on the fluid mixing. This paper presents simulations within the micromixer and identifies geometric factors that affect the generation of advection flow over staggered oriented ridges. By varying the inflow directions, the ridge height ratio and the ridge asymmetry index, the modes of fluid motion and the pressure drops are studied respectively. Furthermore, through a set of numerical simulations, the relation expression between a mixing index to evaluate the mixing performance and the mentioned geometric parameters is obtained and the value of this mixing index could be calculated continuously. It indicates that the mixing performance of every staggered oriented ridges static micromixer could be estimated.
Mixing efficiency and pressure drop analysis of liquid-liquid two phases flow in serpentine microchannels

Abstract:When fluids flow in microchannels, due to the relative low hydraulic diameter and low flow velocity, the flow is usually laminar flow, which hinders the effective mixing between two liquid-liquid phases. In this paper, the mixing efficiency at both droplet forming stage and droplet moving stage are investigated with the volume of fluid (VOF) method. The user defined scalar (UDS) is defined in the dispersed phase to analyze the mixing efficiency quantitatively. The droplet moves in the microchannel with the constant velocity, while serpentine microchannels are designed with different bend radius ranging. \( \overline{R} \) and εd are defined as the ratio of the bend radius to the width of the microchannel, and the ratio of the dispersed phase velocity to the droplet moving velocity, respectively. They are used for illustrating the effect of the bend radius and the dispersed phase fraction on the mixing efficiency in the droplet. Results indicate that the smaller dispersed phase fraction and smaller bend radius show the better mixing efficiency. However, the droplet production frequency changes in a parabolic trend with the variation of the dispersed phase fraction. The suitable dispersed phase fraction should be less than 0.5 in order to achieve a higher mixing efficiency and higher droplet formation frequency. In addition, the pressure drop in microchannel is increased with the decrease of the bend radius. The pressure drop observed in the micorchannel with square turn (\( \overline{R} \) = 0) and the microchannel with a bend radius of \( \overline{R} \) = 1 is nearly the same. This paper can be referred by someone dealing with the micromixer design and mass transfer in micro scale.

Abstract:A flow analysis method using Navier–Stokes equations has been applied to a parametric investigation of mixing two fluids in a three-dimensional serpentine microchannel, which has not been reported so far. The serpentine microchannel with “L-shaped” repeating units is found to be effective in mixing fluids at Reynolds numbers, 1, 10, 35 and 70. Mixing performance and pressure drop characteristics with two geometrical parameters, i.e., the ratio of channel height to channel width and the ratio of the length of a straight channel in an “L-shaped” unit to the channel width, have been analyzed at four different Reynolds numbers. A mixing index has been used to quantify and elucidate mixing behavior in the microchannel. The vortical structure of the flow in the channel is also analyzed to identify the relationship with mixing performance. The results reveal that mixing and pressure drop characteristics in a serpentine channel are very sensitive to the geometric parameters, showing different behavior at various Reynolds numbers.

Abstract:The problem of controlling the droplet motion in multiphase flows on the microscale has gained increasing attention because the droplet-based microfluidic devices provide great potentials for chemical and biological applications. It is critical to understand the relevant physics on droplet hydrodynamics and thus control the generation, motion, splitting, and coalescence of droplets in complex microfluidic networks. Numerical simulations using the volume of fluid algorithm are conducted to investigate the time-dependent dynamics of droplets in gasliquid multiphase devices. An analytical model based on the electronichydraulic analogy is developed to describe the hydrodynamic behavior of the droplets in interconnected microfluidic ladder devices. It is found that the pressure drop caused by the droplets plays a critical role in the droplet synchronization. A fitted formula for pressure drops in the presence of surfactant is achieved by using numerical simulations. Both the numerical and the theoretical results agree well with the corresponding experimental results.

Abstract:Liquid-liquid two-phase flow in microchannels has attracted much attention, due to the superiority of mass transfer enhancement. One of the biggest unresolved challenges is the low mixing efficiency at the microscale. Suitable mixing efficiency is important to promote the mass transfer of two-phase flow in microchannels. In this paper, the mixing efficiency in three junction configurations, including a cross-shaped junction, a cross-shaped T-junction, and a T-junction, is investigated by the volume of fluid (VOF) method coupled with user-defined scalar (UDS) model. All three junction configurations are designed with the same hydraulic diameter of 100 mu m. Mixing components are distributed in the front and back parts of the droplet. The mixing efficiency in the droplet forming stage and the droplet moving stage are compared quantitatively. Results show that different junction configurations create very different mixing efficiencies, and the cross-shaped T-junction performs best, with relatively lower disperse phase fractions. However, with an increase of the disperse phase fraction, the cross-shaped junction is superior.
Numerical Simulation of the Efficiency of Mixing in Heterogeneous Microchannels with Patterned Surface Potentials

Abstract:The mixing of samples in heterogeneous microchannels with a periodically stepwise surface potential was analyzed numerically using the control volume method. The equations describing the wall potential and external potential were solved first to get the distribution of wall potential and external potential, respectively, then the momentum equation was solved to get the developed flow field. Finally, the mass transport equation was solved to get the concentration field. The simulation results show that the distribution of samples at the inlet of the microchannel determines its theoretical value of concentration, therefore, the pattern of the distribution of samples at the inlet and its corresponding velocity can be changed to get the desirable concentration of solute. The heterogeneous wall potential almost has no effect on the mixing of samples in two-inlet microfluidic devices. For three-inlet microfluidic devices, the comprehensive ability of transportation and mixing has an optimization when the ratio of periodic length of wall potential to the height of the microchannel is about 4.88. The above conclusions are helpful to the optimization of the design of microfluidic devices.

Abstract:Fast liquid mixing in the flow channels at millimeter size was studied by planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) technique in experiments and the large eddy simulation (LES) as well. A simplified mixer model was applied, where two liquid streams impinge into each other in the confined channels. A dynamic kinetic energy sub-grid scale (SGS) model of LES was employed to simulate the fast liquid mixing. The results show that LES predictions with high-density meshes have good agreement with the experimental data in terms of the instantaneous and time-averaged concentration fields, and the probability density function (PDF) of concentration fluctuations. Hence, the mixing quality characterized by the intensity of segregation (IOS) and 95% mixing time can be also predicted reasonably. The LES simulations further predict the significant effect of cross-flow angle on the mixing process. The cross-flow angle of 90∘ gives the fastest mixing of two liquids in the millimeter channels at 1–2ms. The mixing layer between the two liquid streams cannot be observed under the geometry with larger cross-flow angles. This indicates different mixing mechanisms compared with the mixing of two liquids flowing in parallel. Vorticity in the turbulent mixing process is discussed for a better understanding on the physical factors controlling the mixing process.

Abstract:A numerical model is developed for three-dimensional droplet mixing in serpentine microchannels with inner-wall ridges (referred to as SMR microchannels). The underlying mechanisms of mixing in SMR microchannels are revealed, and the effects of the ridge width and ridge number on mixing inside droplets of different sizes are clarified. The results indicate that SMR microchannels are capable of enhancing the mixing efficiency by 3.6%–12.5% compared with that in smooth serpentine microchannels, particularly when the droplet length is larger than the microchannel width and the width ratio of the ridge to the microchannel is 0.25–1. The above mixing enhancement is determined by two main factors: the combined effects of the vortex pair and reverse flow, and non-horizontal vortices. Moreover, when the width ratio is 1, there is a maximum 16.0% increase in mixing efficiency for small droplets with a length equal to the microchannel width. However, for small droplets, mixing in an SMR microchannel is worse than in a smooth serpentine microchannel when the width ratio is less than 0.75. With increasing the ridge number, when the width ratio is 0.25, the mixing efficiency is reduced for small droplets but increased for larger droplets.
